The White House faces a tough task in convincing a majority in the House and Senate to approve authorization for a military strike against Syria. The administration is pulling out all the stops to convince Congress, but Democrats and Republicans alike are seeking more answers from the White House on the U.S. mission in Syria. Some on the right and the left have already staked out firm opposition. The White House has found two key GOP allies: Sens. John McCain (Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (S.C.). (Snip) The following is the The Hill´s whip list on Syria.
I just read that John Boenheur said he will support Obama on going to war with Syria. I think it is time to remove him as speaker. That should be the first vote, before the vote on going to into another fruitless and unnecessary conflict.
Do these people realize they are supporting the Muslim Brotherhood terrorists, people who were caught on the Turkish border with a canister of Sarin. A poll on Drudge is running 92% against striking Syria with over 500,000 votes counted. Other polls are also against getting involved there.
Eliminating Syria´s WMD´s require boots on the ground to secure them and then destroy them. You CAN NOT bomb a chemical weapons depot without releasing the chemicals into the atmosphere.
Any putative air strikes by definition weaken Assad and his ability to secure the weapons and prevent them from falling into terrorist hands.
Any military action that DOESN´T eliminate the weapons is a waste of time. And what´s to say that Assad isn´t hiding them right now? Whats to say that after the strike he wont launch them into Israel in retaliation?
Out of the 190 plus countries on earth, not only do most not care, most are not allied with the US.
There are 190+ countries on earth with a total population in excess of 6,000,000,000. We are one country with a population of 335,000,000, separated from Syria by 7,000 miles and a large ocean. Why exactly is this something that the US must take care of? Where is Europe, Asia and Africa?
This article is a bunch of b.s. It`s purpose is to set up Barack for a pat on the back an a job well done when he secures the votes for a strike. Does anyone really think the GOP are not going to give Obama everything he wants for the next 3 years? They are afraid of their own shadow and prove it every time they stick their heads out in the sunlight. What`s even more infuriating is the GOP will get n-o-t-h-i-n-g for their support. Meanwhile, we the taxpayer will get stuck for billions we don`t have while more young American soldiers will eventually die for no reason.
Obama is running from Obamacare to his zone of strength and core value: class warfare. Democrats are geniuses at playing on group identity. When I ask friends what principles lead them to vote Democrat, it is a hard question for them. After a baffled pause, I often hear this: "Republicans are the party of the rich." It is said as if that is all that needs to be said: not like me, exploiting people, bad for the country. Not my party. As the liberal Howard Dean says, many Republicans "have never made an honest living in their lives." Democrats have
Senate Republicans on Wednesday launched an around-the-clock talkathon over some of President Obama´s nominees in the wake of a new, Democratic-driven rules change last month that weakened the GOP´s ability to block nominations. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., threatened to hold the Senate in session through the night to deal with 11 nominations, most of them non-controversial. Republicans retain the power to use up all procedural time, including post-cloture debate time on nominees. If Republicans refuse to give up their allotted debate time, the Senate could be in session continuously into Saturday -- or longer. "If we have to
CHICAGO-- Chicago will soon host a sculpture that’s both inspired and angered viewers around the world, reports CBS Chicago. CBS affiliate station WBBM Newsradio’s John Cody reports “Homeless Jesus” will be installed Friday outside the Chicago offices of Catholic Charities. Canadian sculptor Tim Schmalz said Pope Francis has blessed the statue, but two cathedrals have rejected his bronze image of Jesus on a park bench. “Imagine a life-sized figure totally wrapped up in a blanket, or a sleeping bag, with the only thing visible the feet of the figure,” he said. “If you look in the feet, you actually see
Alabama kicker Cade Foster has received a lot of hate since missing three field goal attempts in his team’s stunning loss to Auburn, but he has at least one fan: former President George W. Bush. The 43rd president reportedly sent Foster a personalized letter encouraging him to press on through life’s challenges. “Dear Cade (#43), life has its setbacks. I know! However, you will be a stronger human with time. I wish you all the best. Sincerely, another 43, George Bush,” the letter reads. Foster posted a picture of the letter to his Twitter account Wednesday. Foster was inundated with
The Hollywood Reporter gathered some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry Wednesday morning at the Beverly Hills Hotel for the 22nd annual Women in Entertainment breakfast to honor the Power 100 and present Oprah Winfrey with a leadership award named for former Paramount and 20th Century Fox exec Sherry Lansing. Lansing took the stage at the packed event, sponsored by Lifetime, Gucci, Samsung Galaxy, Audi, Roberto Coin, Guggenheim, City National Bank, the Gersh Agency, Loyola Marymount University and the Entertainment Industry Foundation, to speak about Winfrey, whom she called one of her personal idols. "You conduct your life in
President Barack Obama reportedly plans to nominate Stanley Fischer to be the next vice chairman of the Federal Reserve. The former Bank of Israel Chief would take over for Janet Yellen when she leaves the post to become Fed chairwoman. Fischer, a dual-citizen of the U.S. and Israel, served as the head of Israel’s central bank for eight-years before stepping down on June 30 of this year. Later this summer, the economist sung the Fed’s praises on the Charlie Rose Show. “The United States managed — although it is hard for Americans to believe — managed the crisis better than
Walking out of a private conference room beneath the Capitol Building on Tuesday, Republican House members looked tired. Not the typical "I-had-a-bad-night’s-sleep" tired but something deeper — a look of battle exhaustion. Unlike past meetings in the same place during periods of fever-pitched warfare with Democrats, it appeared — for the first time in a long time — the fire in their bellies that drove them to shut down the government and risk federal default, was, for now, no longer evident. These Republicans had just been briefed on a new, bipartisan budget blueprint that would establish long-term federal government spending
MIAMI- George Zimmerman will not face domestic violence charges because his girlfriend did not wish to pursue the case and there was scant evidence of a crime, a state prosecutor said Wednesday. Samantha Scheibe´s decision not to cooperate and the lack of other corroborating evidence would have made the case difficult to prove, State Attorney Phil Archer in Seminole County said in a statement. "There is no reasonable likelihood of a successful prosecution," Archer said. Zimmerman, 30, had faced charges of aggravated assault, battery and criminal mischief following a Nov. 18 confrontation at the central Florida house he shared with
In a contentious exchange with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius over her repeated claims that mandated health services do not raise costs for consumers in the form of higher insurance premiums, Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.) waved his hand in apparent surrender and said to her, “It’s like talking to the Republic of Korea or something.” Shimkus apparently was referring to North Korea, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, where the Communist rulers there spout pro-government propaganda that is then glowingly reported by state-run media.(Video)
"The journalistic bond between The Post and MSNBC just grew a bit stronger, as the paper’s opinion section announced that MSNBC host Rachel Maddow will be writing a monthly column." So began Washington Post media critic Erik Wemple´s announcement Wednesday concerning the addition of the perilously liberal Maddow to the Post opinion page.Honestly, if you were the Post, would you want your relationship with the so-called "news network" considered by most to be the biggest farce in journalism to grow stronger? After the high profile dismissal of Alec Baldwin and Martin Bashir, is this really the time to be adding
Christmas miracle or sickly sweet PR stunt? Either way, it´s unlikely these WestJet passengers care after they had their wildest holiday wishes granted during a flight across Canada. Travelers pitching up at Toronto Pearson and John C. Munro Hamilton International Airports for flights to Calgary were surprised when a virtual Santa Claus asked what they wanted for Christmas. A promo video sees a variety of passengers telling Father Christmas their dream gift. With their wishes made, the footage shows them merrily taking their place on the aircrafts.
Sen. Lamar Alexander’s chief of staff, Ryan Loskarn, is under investigation for child pornography. The Republican Senator from Tennessee revealed Wednesday that law enforcement officers are searching Loskarn´s private residence. “I am stunned, surprised and disappointed by what I have learned,” the Senator said. Alexander, 73, made the announcement on Wednesday, indicating he "was just informed by the United States Senate legal counsel’s office" of the search. The staffer has been placed on administrative leave without pay.
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
A black fashion student says he was brutally attacked by a gang of Hasidic men who shouted anti-gay slurs at him while he was walking through Williamsburg after a night of partying, the Daily News has learned. Taj Patterson, 22, was headed home to Fort Greene around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he says more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jewish men began assaulting him on Flushing Ave. and yelling, “Stay down, f----t!”
A “presidential selfie” featuring President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service began making the rounds this morning, but it’s the person not included in the frame who caught everyone’s attention: As anyone with two eyes and a Twitter account has noticed, Michelle Obama does not appear amused. Of course, though a picture says a thousand words, not all of those words are necessarily true. FLOTUS might not have even known the photo was taking place. Or she could disapprove of funeral selfies. Either way.
President Obama’s job approval among American voters has dropped to negative territory with just 38 percent voicing their approval versus the 58 who says they disapprove, according to a national poll released Tuesday by the independent Quinnipiac University. That is one percent less than the 39% who said they approved of him in last month’s poll. The majority of the 2,692 registered voters the University in early December said that the president is not honest and trustworthy. When asked, “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as President?,” respondents gave Obama lackluster ratings
Looks like this president can’t get away with flirting in front of his wife… It appears that first lady Michelle Obama was none too pleased with the way that President Barack Obama was acting toward Denmark Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt during a ceremony honoring Nelson Mandela, and before too long, they switched seats. This lmao! Michelle Obama vs Prime Minister of Denmark at Mandela´s ceremony. pic.twitter.com/Rq4uF9fTaZ — Stun (@TheBlogPirate) December 10, 2013
New York — The anchor who might beat Bill O’Reilly gets her eyelash extensions applied one at a time, with tweezers and dabs of glue, about 90 minutes before showtime, right after a motorized gun sprays foundation over her face, neck, shoulders, collarbone and sternum, wiping out a galaxy of light freckles that spreads across her — Let me stop you right there. Photos of the day Uruguay legalizes marijuana, Kiev police pull back from protesters, aging U.S. prison population and more. Tuesday´s Photos of the day Would you write this way about a man? About O’Reilly himself? At least that’s what Megyn Kelly might ask at
The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela´s memorial yesterday "made up his own signs," according to South Africa´s deaf federation. "He´s a complete fraud," Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town, said according to ITV News. "He wasn´t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter at DeafSA, told Reuters:
SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -Officials at Shaw Air Force Base are trying to determine what to do about a holiday display after a Nativity scene was taken down last week. Air Force spokeswoman Lt. Keavy Rake said Tuesday a Nativity display was set up Friday by a group of volunteers from the base chapel at a small lake on the installation. The site was near where a tree lighting ceremony was scheduled Friday evening. Rake says the Military Religious Freedom Foundation lodged a complaint about the display through the Air Force in Washington. Paul Loebe, spokesman for the foundation, said
