In First Major Test,
Obama Overrules New Team

For President Barack Obama´s new foreign policy advisers, the first test of their willingness to undertake military action wound up being a stark lesson in the president´s ability to overrule them all. Obama´s abrupt decision to seek congressional approval before striking Syria also overshadowed what had been a surprising level of consensus among the second-term team members about how to respond to a deadly chemical weapons attack against civilians in Syria. People close to the deliberations say Secretary of State John Kerry, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, national security adviser Susan Rice and U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power largely agreed about the need to

President Gains McCain’s

WASHINGTON — The White House’s aggressive push for Congressional approval of an attack on Syria appeared to have won the tentative support of one of President Obama’s most hawkish Republican critics, Senator John McCain of Arizona, who said Monday that he supported a “limited” strike if the president did more to arm the Syrian opposition. In an hourlong meeting at the White House, Mr. McCain said Mr. Obama gave general support to doing more for the Syrian rebels, although no specifics were discussed. In the same conversation, which also included Senator Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican, officials said that

President Obama´s Syrian melodrama went from bad to worse on Saturday with his surprise decision to seek Congressional approval for what he promises will be merely a limited cruise-missile bombing. Mr. Obama will now have someone else to blame if Congress blocks his mission, but in the bargain he has put at risk his credibility and America´s standing in the world with more than 40 months left in office. This will go down as one of the stranger gambles, if not abdications, in Commander in Chief history. For days his aides had been saying the President has the Constitutional power

Saturday is one of the toughest, if not the most difficult, days on the NFL calendar – cutdown day. The Patriots have begun making their cuts in advance of Saturday’s 6 p.m. deadline to trim the roster to 53, and among the players league sources have confirmed are not making the team is quarterback Tim Tebow. (Snip) Tebow is a former first-round draft pick who has become a fascinating figure during his relatively brief time in the NFL. It is majority minority yet suburban and wealthy — the average household income is $98,000. UN Needs Time to Analyze

The United Nations needs time to examine the “entire body of evidence” on alleged use of chemical weapons by Syria, Martin Nesirky, spokesman for the secretary-general, told reporters today in New York. The result will be an “impartial, credible” report of what UN inspectors found on their visit to the site of the alleged attack outside Damascus, Nesirky said. Angela Kane, the UN’s disarmament chief, and Secretary General Ban Ki-moon are doing “whatever can be done to speed up the process,” Nesirky. The UN won’t provide a timetable for a final report, Nesirky said.

5 Ways Obama’s Unseriousness Has

Let’s count up the ways in which the Syria debate has exposed Barack Obama’s utter incompetence and lack of seriousness. 1. Failure to consult Congress. The Obama administration has built no consensus among Congress for any kind of strike. Generalissimo Pelosi wants a strike, but beyond her there is very little appetite for any U.S. action. Democrats are vocally skeptical. Republicans see a replay of Libya, just a couple of weeks before the first anniversary of the deadly attack in Benghazi. Even Dennis Kucinich is starting to make sense. There may be good reasons for striking Syria, but those reasons have

A painting depicting politicians Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev in women’s underwear was one of the items Russian authorities confiscated Monday upon raiding a newly-opened St. Petersburg art gallery that had shown solidarity with Russia’s gay-rights movement. The off-beat gallery, known as the Museum of Authority, opened on August 15 with an inaugural exhibit called “The Rulers” that featured paintings by artist Konstantin Altunin of public figures such as President Barack Obama, former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and Mr. Putin. The idea of the museum had been to put on exhibits relating to various authorities, said founder Alexander Donskoi.

Four teenage girls are facing several charges, including ethnic intimidation, after police said they brutally beat a 32-year-old white woman Sunday in Pittsburgh, Pa. According to police, the four young black girls, ages 14, 15 and 16, threw a bottle at the woman’s car while she was stopped at a stop sign and called her a racial slur, a local TV station reported. “She gets out to address it, and that’s when the girls jump her,” said Lt. Shirley Sloan, the TV station reported. Witnesses told police that the girls pulled the victim to the ground by her hair and kicked her in

US Secretary of State John Kerry is concerned about the threat posed by global warming. The Marshall Islands, at no more than three feet above sea level, are especially at risk of rising seas, one of the many effects of global warming.‘The science is clear. WASHINGTON— Members of Congress who attended a classified briefing Sunday remained highly skeptical of voting to approve a military strike on Syria, and said the administration would need to be more specific about the exact scope of the attacks in the coming days. Congress is not set to reconvene in Washington until Sept. 9th, but roughly 60-70 representatives and several senators came to D.C on Labor Day weekend to attend the briefing. The meeting came a day after President Barack Obama announced he would seek congressional authorization for the attacks. “I’m still very skeptical about the President’s proposal. It is not clear

President Obama and his top aides began a full-scale political offensive on Sunday to persuade a skeptical Congress to approve a military strike against Syria, but faced a struggle to win over lawmakers from both parties and a war-weary American public. The President made calls to members of the House of Representatives and Senate, with more scheduled for Monday, underscoring the task confronting the administration before it can go ahead with using force in response to a deadly chemical attack blamed on the Syrian government. Dozens of lawmakers, some in tennis shirts or shirtsleeves, cut short their vacations and streamed

The Sunday newspaper supplement Parade magazine has a cover story on "Putting America Back to Work," and promises as a guru "Robert Reich on the future of manufacturing jobs." Inside, Reich´s article is titled "What America Needs Now." Like a good liberal, Reich insisted "we should follow Germany´s lead." America´s high schools need a fifth year for what liberals call the working class: More than 12 million students are projected to drop out of high school over the next decade; the millions more with diplomas face bleak job prospects. Duquesne University has rescinded an invitation to Fox News journalist Geraldo Rivera to moderate an academic panel on the Kennedy assassination. The reason? Rivera recently snapped a shirtless photograph of himself and sent it to his Twitter followers — a move that violates Duquesne’s Catholic principles, according to a university spokesperson. “The administration felt that Mr. Rivera’s decision to post a nearly naked picture of himself on social media was inappropriate and inconsistent with who we are as a Catholic university and therefore asked the Wecht Institute to withdraw the invitation,” said Bridget Fare, assistant vice president of public affairs at Duquesne,

As a former fast-food worker, I can attest to the crazy hours, poor working conditions and rotten pay. I boiled chicken — and repeatedly burned my forearms — in hot pressure cookers in high school for Colonel Sanders’s KFC (now owned by YUM Brands) until I could get a higher-paying job in a department store. The unionized retail clerk’s job wasn’t glamorous, either, but it was a big step up: I sold sporting goods, rang a register (calculating change in my head) and hand-drilled bowling balls. Although the pioneering retail chain (E.J. Korvette’s) at the time was dying a slow

On Saturday on the Fox News Channel, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton harshly criticized President Barack Obama handling of the United States’ involvement in Syria, calling him the weakest president since James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln’s predecessor. “This is absolutely stunning,” Bolton said. “I’ve been trying to fill in the blank of the following sentence: ‘Barack Obama is the weakest president since…’ And I have to say, the best I can come up with is James Buchanan who watched the country dissolve into the Civil War. We’re watching the collapse of American influence in the Middle East
