A Russian and a United Arab Emirates defense contractor are planning to jointly build an unmanned combat helicopter drone as global military’s become more sci-fi, RIA Novosti newswire reported on Monday. Russia’s Berkut Aero will reportedly team up with the UAE’s Adcom Systems to take Russia’s Berkut VL helicopter as a model for Russia’s first-ever combat helicopter drone. The aircraft would be stationed on a Russian aircraft carrier and fly to remote areas, Berkut Aero development director Dmitry Rumyantsev told the wire.

Hillary Clinton largely absent

A new Senate intelligence committee report is out, detailing the attacks that killed four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012, and the actions before and after the attack. Below, we focus on four key points that will be important to the political debate about Benghazi going forward. 1. Hillary Clinton´s name comes up only once The lone mention comes in the section where the Republicans on the committee weigh in. They say Clinton ultimately bears responsibility for the failures and that her failure to act "clearly made a difference" in the lives of the four Americans killed. "Ultimately, however, the final

U.S. Rep. James P. Moran announced Wednesday that he will retire at the end of the year. Moran (D), who has represented Northern Virginia for 23 years, said he will not seek reelection because “it’s time to close this chapter of my life and move on to the next challenge.” The congressman did not explain his decision in great detail, but given the overwhelmingly Democratic nature of his district, his reasoning is unlikely to match that of other Democrats who are choosing to step down this year, such as worrisome reelection prospects or concerns about their vote for the Affordable

Nearly six months ago, President Obama sought to temper outrage over the nation´s mushrooming surveillance programs by pledging new steps to balance privacy and safety. "It´s not enough for me, as president, to have confidence in these programs," he said. "The American people need to have confidence in them as well." In other words, no government, not even one led by a liberal constitutional lawyer, can shield bad policies with empty promises. It´s not enough to say, "Trust us," while curbing sacred liberties -- and yet that still appears to be Obama´s position. Previews of the president´s address on counterterrorism Friday suggest

Senate report: Attack on U.S. compound

A long-delayed Senate intelligence committee report released on Wednesday spreads blame among the State Department and intelligence agencies for not preventing an attack at an outpost in Libya that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens. The bipartisan report lays out more than a dozen findings regarding the Sept. 11, 2012 assault on the diplomatic compound in the Libyan city of Benghazi. It says the State Department failed to increase security at the compound despite warnings, and faults intelligence agencies for not sharing information about the existence of a secret CIA outpost at the site.

In the fall of last year, I noticed a lump in my left neck which felt to me like a run-of-the-mill swollen lymph node. When it didn´t go away I sought the advice of a doctor. Several months and countless medical tests later, the official diagnosis is stage IV non-Hodgkin´s lymphoma.(snip)In separate columns, both published in the past week, husband and wife Emma and Bill Keller argue in no uncertain terms that they take offense to what I´m doing. Washington — Edward J. The announcement by the group, the Freedom of the Press Foundation, is the latest contribution to a public relations tug of war between Mr. Snowden’s critics, who portray him as a criminal and a traitor, and his supporters, who say he is a whistle-blower and source for the news media in

As recently as 1998, New York State’s Republican party controlled the governorship, a United States Senate seat, and the mayor’s office in Manhattan. Today, it is greatly diminished, with its sole beachhead of influence in the state senate, where it shares a majority with four independent Democrats. In contrast, the Working Families party (WFP), a 15-year-old left-wing, union-fueled group with just 20,000 members, now holds the whip hand over much of the dominant Democratic party in New York — and is already spreading its wings to other states. The WFP not only was a major force behind Bill de Blasio’s victory

Los Angeles County sheriff´s deputies are serving a felony search warrant at the Calabasas residence of singer Justin Bieber in connection to an investigation into an egging incident at his neighbor´s home. Sheriff´s spokesman Steve Whitmore said eight people are being detained inside Bieber´s home, including the singer. "They are being cooperative," Whitmore said. HBO has finally announced it will cancel Newsroom, the smarmy TV series dedicated to satisfying the ache of l’esprit d’escalier for MSNBC liberals (“That’s what we should have said about the tea parties!”) and pandering to the sensibilities of those who think Bill Maher is funny. Though I’d quickly figured out how to avoid one of the biggest must-miss TV shows of recent years, it’s good news to be sure. The bad news is there will be a whole third season before it finally goes away. But maybe there’s an opportunity here. I always liked crossover episodes. You know like when

New details have surfaced which further put the lie to the idea that the Obama administration’s knowledge of the Benghazi attacks was “developing” at the time, and that the administration could reasonably have believed that the terrorist attacks perpetrated on September 11, 2012 had anything to do with the anti-Islam video “Innocence of Muslims.” Previously, before her famous Congressional outburst asking “What difference at this point does it make?” then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asked “Was information developing, was the situation fluid?” as an excuse for blaming the video. No, information was not “developing,” as recent news reporting shows. In fact,

Months and months ago, when Barack Obama could be bothered to say anything at all about the attacks in Ben-ghazi, Libya, on September 11, 2012, the president promised to bring the perpetrators to justice. That was before White House spokesman Jay Carney dismissed the attacks as something that “happened a long time ago.” It’s been 16 months. Shocking images depicting U.S. soldiers burning the bodies of what appear to be Iraqi insurgents, have emerged today. The explosive photographs, reportedly taken in Fallujah in 2004, have already sparked a Marine Corps investigation, but many of the 41 gag-inducing shots are just too grisly to publish. Two pictures show a Marine pouring what looks like gasoline on the remains of enemy soldiers and another two images appear to show the remains go up in flames. Two more capture the horrifically charred bodies. The sick snaps were exclusively obtained by TMZ, who turned them over to the Pentagon last week, triggering the

T ea Party activists and the conservative groups that have enforced their agenda are vehemently opposed to the $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill that will fund the government through September. On Wednesday evening, the House passed the bill anyway, 359 to 67, with plenty of votes to spare. Sixty-four of those no votes were from conservative Republicans. But it seems pretty clear from the vote tally that Tea Party–style "ideological purity has lost its power," says Jonathan Weisman in The New York Times. A multi-billion-dollar high-speed train network linking America with Mexico moved a step closer as officials from both sides of the border thrashed out details. The proposed 300 mile route would link San Antonio, Texas, to Monterrey, Mexico - slashing the current journey time from five hours by car to under two hours. Advocates say the project, which would be the first high-speed train line in North America and is set to be completed by 2018, will provide huge economic boost to regions in both nations. Washington´s political reporters, in lightning knee-jerk speed, have embraced President Obama´s Robin Hood war on “income inequality,” the latest example of the president´s success in using the bully pulpit to steer attention to his new populist campaign. The issue took center stage Wednesday during a briefing from the nonpartisan Business Roundtable meant to focus on the group´s agenda to push economic growth from 2 percent to 4 percent, but instead saw several reporters pestering the group´s president and chairman about the minimum wage and income distribution. Have you ever lied about reading a book? Maybe you didn’t want to seem stupid in front of someone you respected. Maybe you rationalized it by reasoning that you had a familiarity with the book, or knew who the author was, or what the story was about, or had glanced at its Wikipedia page. Or maybe you had tried to read the book, even bought it and set it by your bed for months unopened, hoping that it would impart what was in it merely via proximity (if that worked, please email me).
