Why Syria Isn’t the Big Story This Week
The American Interest, by Walter Russell Mead

Original Article

The world’s eyes are riveted on Syria this week, as the United States, France and perhaps a few others organize plans to punish a bloodstained government for its use of chemical weapons against its own people. [snip] But another story that is getting less attention is much more important for the future of the world: the economic crisis in India represents a much more fateful moment in world politics than anything happening in Syria.

Comments:
Yes, I suppose what happens in one of the 2 countries (the other being Japan) absolutely essential in containing China, is of some significance...

Not to laugh too much but that 80% rule tells us that somebody´s been digging too deeply into American Homeowner´s Association law for comfort!

Otherwise, India is in danger of losing the rest of its onion crop. No big thing in much of the world, onions are a STAPLE CROP in India, as they are in Korea. People plan their lives around the onion crop because that means they´ll have a life.

There´s other economic problems there ~ and some analysts have suggested that the status of the moonsoon cycle may be in doubt as Earth ceases to warm and turns toward a cooler cycle for an unknown period.

That´s a killer ~ not just there but for much of SE Asia as well. Keep your eye on the monsoons and the price controls on onions.

Fur Shur, in India, with or without an owner, all the land gets used for something.

"We will keep this promise to the American people: If you like your doctor you will be able to keep your doctor. Period. If you like your healthcare plan, you will be able to keep your healthcare plan. Period." (Barack Obama, June 15, 2009, with variants repeated many times since). Today, any American who isn´t willfully blind knows this "promise" is a very big lie. A lie which was deliberately told by fundamentally-dishonest pushers of Obamacare, because if the truth were widely known at that time the Affordable Care Act would never have become law. It´s a lie that is so egregious,

Yesterday was a momentous day in New York City politics: Chiara de Blasio wore a festive hat, Miranda from Sex and the City made an appearance, and much cheering and merriment was had. Although some of it was reserved for Bill de Blasio´s inauguration and his ambitious plan to reduce the income gap, a lot of the joy was focused on Hillary Clinton´s new bangs. While some news outlets, like Vanity Fair, reported that they were "bangs," the Cut can confirm it: Those side-swept, layered, pieces of fluffy heaven resting ever so gently on our potential first lady president´s forehead

Eleven GOP attorneys general say the Obama administration is breaking the law by repeatedly making changes to ObamaCare without going through Congress. The attorneys general specifically criticize President Obama´s executive action that allowed insurance companies to keep offering health plans that had been canceled for not meeting ObamaCare´s more rigorous standards. “We support allowing citizens to keep their health insurance coverage, but the only way to fix this problem-ridden law is to enact changes lawfully: through Congressional action,” the attorneys general wrote in a letter to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. “The illegal actions by this administration

According to a detailed report, Kim Jong Un fed his Uncle Jang Song Thaek to a pack of hungry dogs, a deviation from the traditional method of execution by firing squad. "Jang was stripped naked and thrown into a cage, along with his five closest aides. Then 120 hounds, starved for three days, were allowed to prey on them until they were completely eaten up. This is called "quan jue", or execution by dogs." The report, appearing in a Chinese controlled newspaper, stated that the "execution" lasted for one hour and was supervised by Kim Jong Un and "300 senior officials."

O.J. Simpson is receiving tests for brain cancer and is begging President Barack Obama for a pardon so he can die in peace at home, according to a new report. The jailed former football legend, who is serving out a kidnapping, assault and robbery sentence in a Nevada prison, is undergoing secret medical exams for a cancerous tumor in his brain and is convinced he hasn´t got long to live, The National Enquirer reports. The publication reported just months ago that the 66-year-old had such an extreme case of diabetes that his life was at risk and brain cancer would certainly add

Bitter cold. Below-zero. Blizzard conditions. Sorry, Northeast. But those are phrases you´ll be using a lot Friday amid a monster storm. And not just the Northeast, forecasters said. About one-third of the nation -- approximately 100 million people in 22 states -- is in the path this storm. But the Northeast will be hardest-hit, the National Weather Service said. "Heaviest snow will fall from central New York to the Massachusetts coast. Blizzard conditions are possible for eastern Long Island and the Massachusetts coast. Bitter cold will move into the Midwest and East following the storm," the Weather Service said. The

A perfect storm of slow news and cultural provocation elevated Melissa Harris-Perry‘s New Year’s weekend segment, which used Kieran Romney‘s appearance in a Romney family photo as a setup for jokes about diversity, into a full-blown media conflagration. That firestorm has now roiled into a second weekend. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) is expected to address the controversy tomorrow on Fox News Sunday, and Melissa Harris Perry addressed it on air for the first time on the Saturday morning edition of the Melissa Harris Perry show. North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un sentenced his uncle to be eaten alive by a pack of 120 wild dogs in a savage punishment for treachery, it has been claimed. Jang Song-Thaek, 67, along with five close aides, was stripped naked and thrown into a cage of hounds which had been starved for three days, according to new details emerging from China. The pack of animals spent more than an hour mauling the group in a punishment called ´quan jue´, or execution by dogs, a report in Chinese newspaper Wen Wei Po said. MSNBC´s Chris Hayes is tired of conservatives snarking about global warming every time it gets cold. During his show Thursday evening, Hayes complained of the "strange bizarre underworld of climate trolls" that came to life when Matt Drudge ironically linked an article on the Drudge Report about cold weather. "Of course, no one ever said that climate change meant it wouldn´t ever be cold," Hayes said defensively, calling the annual tradition "willful stupidity" of conservatives "who delight being on the wrong side of history." Hayes admitted, however, that Drudge had been successful in creating a culture of global warming skepticism. "I mean, Drudge has

As the planet marked its fourth hottest year on record, a study published in the journal Nature found increasing levels of carbon dioxide will lead to thinner ocean clouds and reduce their cooling impact, causing temperature rises of at least 5.6F (3C) over the course of the century. The team of scientists said the findings show some climate models have been too “optimistic” and previous estimates of a minimum temperature rise of only 2.7F (1.5C) could now be discounted. The optimistic models did not properly assess the impact of water evaporation, which sometimes rises only a short distance into the atmosphere

Hospital staff in Northern Virginia are turning away sick people on a frigid Thursday morning because they can´t determine whether their Obamacare insurance plans are in effect. Patients in a close-in DC suburb who think they´ve signed up for new insurance plans are struggling to show their December enrollments are in force, and health care administrators aren´t taking their word for it. In place of quick service and painless billing, these Virginians are now facing the threat of sticker-shock that comes with bills they can´t afford. ´They had no idea if my insurance was active or not!´ a coughing Maria Galvez told MailOnline

As various lawmakers push to repeal cuts to military pensions, Representative Paul Ryan (D-WI) continues to defend. the cuts. House leadership indicates no plans to take up any repeal. On December 27, Breitbart News reported that lawmakers from both parties had introduced legislation repealing Ryan´s military pension cuts in part or in whole. But according to The Hill, there has been little progress toward reversing the cuts once Congress reconvenes in January. If the majority of leadership shares Ryan´s position, the push to reverse is moot because Ryan has made clear he sees "no choice between responsible reforms of military compensation" versus
