Obama’s Syria move could set up
epic confrontation with Congress

Washington Examiner, by Byron York

Barack Obama’s presidency has not been about restraining the powers of the presidency. On major issues both domestic and international — immigration, environmental regulation, the war in Libya, and more — Obama has shown no hesitation to act unilaterally in areas that properly lie within the purview of Congress. But now, the president says that even though he has decided the U.S. should attack the Syrian regime over its use of chemical weapons, he will ask Congress to give him permission to do so. It’s not entirely clear why Obama has decided to exercise restraint now when he has not done

Should COngress vote against attacking Syria, and Obama goes ahead and does it anyway...Congress will do nothing. The house can vote against Obama every day of the week and it means nothing. Reid controls what does and does not come up in the Senate and there will always be 34 democrats that will back the One no matter what.

Frankly, I see Congress authorizing action. Too many Republicans will back military action no matter what. McCain hasn´t seen a foreign policy issue that he doesn´t think cant be resolved with cruise missiles.

FTA: “...It’s not entirely clear why Obama has decided to exercise restraint now when he has not done so in the past….”

I’m wondering if he received some info about some world-shaking event planned for 9/11 which will justify and legalize his acting without Congressional approval…or will guarantee Congressional approval. Something that will “change his calculus."

Obama wants to punish Assad. It has not been shown or proven that Assad authorized the use of the Chemical Weapon.

BHO thinks his attack on Syria can be totally sterile and that no innocent civilians will be harmed. WRONG THINKING!

There is world precedent to ARREST Assad or declare him a violator of international pacts and laws when the hard evidence is found that he ordered the use of Chemical Weapons.

Then an international tribunal can bring him to justice.

The Nuremburg Tribunal established that.

BHO does not have to unilaterally attack Syria as a whole because its leader committed an international crime.

The USA has not been attacked by Syria.

There is no reason or for the USA to attack Syria.

I have called my states Senators and House Reps. TELLING THEM NOT TO APPROVE.

IF Congress says NO and he orders the strike anyway...Impeachment Proceedings should start immediately .

It has been our policy since our founding to only wage war when the USA or one of its Entities has been attacked by a foreign nation.

Obama does not have "permission" from the UN, NATO nor any of our "former" allies either.

Most of the citizens of the USA are telling him NO.

Again. Obama you are pushing on a rope.

Obama, show some reason and sense. This will not be like a school yard to-do. The whole world will turn against the USA.

I pray this will not happen. Amen.

Au Contraire, it´s entirely clear. He know that he painted himself into that famous corner and looks like an idiot in front of the entire planet. Now he´s looking for a way out and someone else that he can blame for his own stupidity and arrogance.

Obama wants somebody to blame if things don´t turn out well for America - when it´s all over. What a feckless, but arrogant, coward.

And the photo this morning on Drudge of Obama squatting over his desk with his shoe on the edge of it.....Is Obama trying to send a message to the American people with all this shoe business? Maybe the disrespect he has for the Oval Office and beyond, or maybe an attitude of "It´s my house and my furniture and I can do to it what I want." God only knows what other reasons he may have.

Ok, so we can expect hours of endless political prattle with folks having really big egos belly-bumping each other next month. For me, I just want one question answered...in public, which is where did these chemical weapons come from? If from Iraq, and I believe this is the case, then W has every right to stand up and tell the left, "my progressive little people and the msm whores, I told you so."

What I think happened is Boehner laid down the law in no uncertain terms that if Obama unilaterally attacked Syria that the House would immediately start impeachment proceedings against him. Obama´s foreign policy is nothing but dysfunctional. The whole idea of informing the Syrians that he might launch a "pinprick" attack against certain targets is idiotic. It reminds me of when Bill Klintoon sent missiles against an aspirin factory in Iraq. Nothing but a waste of time and taxpayers money. This is what we get when we elect an inexperienced punk for a pResident. Even our staunch ally the Brits don´t trust him. They know he is a liar.

I think folks can see through that and have a good laugh.

Right #2, Obama wants some more "pilots" to join him in the cockpit he wants to slam shut and lock in our faces. Hey McCain and Graham will probably raise their hand, being the good guys they are, lol. He´ll probably attack anyway without Congress approval.

With the slow screw Obama inflicts on the nation, attacking Syria will speed things up quite a bit: from the charges rung up to more attacks on our embassies overseas and worse. All for the wishes of Saudi Arabia and Sunni domination the in Middle East.

Obama must be having a good laugh acting like he can´t decide, as Egypt news fades into oblivion-just the way he wanted it.

He evidently was not going to go down alone on this and decide to pull in Congress. He knows darn well they will say no and it will be spun into "those bad Republicans."

The big delay in the confrontation will bring public fatigue via the media and give him time to obfuscate it all by creating diversion here in our contry.

In the meantime Juan Williams can cover for him.

This goes beyond political positioning. Do conservatives want their hands on possibly triggering a regional conflict, or even WWIII? How many more Americans and others will die as a result? Especially when there is no strategic or diplomatic benefit to the USA? Are we now officially the world´s policeman? Where are the other nations in this? Those in Congress who would call themselves conservative must make a stand, as they did against Obamacare.

This is a time for a stand on principle, not political calculus. It´s about the lives of our sons and daughters, not the Emperor´s behind.

Usual Dem maneuver: drop a silent, smelly one and quickly leave the room. Blame the Republicans.

Many are sneering at BO´s naive gutlessness, but he is keeping his larger goal, humiliating America, clearly in mind. Whether he can pull off blaming the Republicans for this mess or not, our credibility has been diminished in the despot community. And that alone is a major gain for him.

Please. That conjures up images of two Titans in a stare down on Mount Olympus. Obama is no Titan, he’s more of a Tiny Tim. And Boehner’s mouthful of marbles act doesn’t exactly make him Titan material either.

Obama voted present, nothing more. And Congress remains a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury signifying nothing (h/t to the Bard).

I know how con-men work and think. Øbama got his fingers burned on this scam- con-men hate that. They will not try again. They flee from such encounters. They only go for the easy marks, the "rubes". When they get caught with their hand in another guy´s pants, they leave town, quickly. Notice how, immediately after his Rose Garden moment, he and Biden left to go golfing! Put it behind him- quickly. Forget it. Move on! Congress can do as it pleases. I doubt seriously Øbama will even lobby for the attack. It was all posturing! Nothing else- and he lost. Now, to find another distraction, that´s the goal. Congress can take the matter up or just let it die a quiet death. Øbama does not want to go there again. On to Russia- and that´s a place he would really rather not go, also. Putin will be gloating. Serious people scare the bee-Jesus out of con-men. I would not be surprised to see Biden get the job after some sort of feigned Presidential "illness".

BO has realized that when you act unilaterally, as he was planning to do, there is no one else to blame. How do you fix that? Invite someone else to the party. It doesn´t matter what the outcome is, he can now point the finger at Congress and say "It´s their fault!" as he has done so many times in the past. The media will cover for him and he can then walk away from the mess he created.

Yes, foreign leaders will see it for what it is, stupidity and weakness, but BO doesn´t really care about them. It may even give him fodder for the upcoming budget fights and the 2014 elections if the GOP does something stupid.

BO plays small ball, it´s about him and his ideological agenda. It would be nice to win the world but corrupting the US is his first priority.

No, the chemical weapons came from Libya through Benghazi. This is what America was supplying the Rebels with. And, I am not kidding. Obama, got caught and he covered it up. Now he wants to blame Assad to drag America into a war. And oh yes, Kerry is so sure so quick that Syria did the gassing, but a year after Benghazi this incompetent bunch still has no answers for dead Americans.

Only congress has the power to declare war, tho we´ve heard " I " and " Mine " when he said he thot he had the power to use yet another executive order. THIS is likely why he backed off. All of the uncertainty Obozo has created in the Middle East in the past 5yrs. just enforces the Islam belief of the US just being a paper tiger. And it emboldens their urge to attack Americans anywhere and anyway they can. After all, we are the "great satan" that must be destroyed. And Obozo is giving them the ammunition to stir up more and more Muslims. And launching a few missiles into Syria will just ignite more of the same.

The Repubs should vote to authorize the prez to use whatever judgment he sees fit on this matter. That leaves them out of any demonization in the future if things go sour.
Just as with the Democratic view of abortion, the Republicans should state their position as they don´t believe in attacking Syria but the President has a right to do so.

Apologies for a second post, but I must respond to #24´s GOP-think.

If the House votes "no", then #24´s scenario is possible. However, if the House votes "yes", then the scenario I posted in #19 is possible.

Worse yet, Assad (or the rebels - we still don´t know who launched the chemicals) could absorb the strike and launch another attack anyway. Putin would have Assad´s "back". Then, since as detailed in http://www.lucianne.com/thread/?artnum=750306: "the president is authorized to use the Armed Forces of the United States as he determines to be necessary and appropriate", Obama would be in a box. Raise the ante, or fold. The situation and the threat of escalation could be even worse.

Damned if you do, damned if you don´t.
Blamed if you do, blamed if you don´t.

The Pubs might as well do the right thing for the USA and vote to stay out. Then put the onus on Putin to settle this. (We don´t care who wins in Syria, right?) Let Mr. Putin be the "hero" and keep his naval base, and just stop the bloodshed. Don´t compound the original "red line" mistake.

If it´s Iran you´re really worried about, then deal directly with Iran. Military action there would be justified.

First came the “polar vortex” — now it’s the “pollen vortex.”Forced to lie dormant by the long, brutal winter, trees are now set to start reproducing like crazy — and create a massive amount of pollen that could wallop your sinuses this weekend. Pollen count in the Northeast will soar to “high levels” Saturday and Sunday, when warm temperatures will prompt plants to create the sniffle-inducing substance, reports Pollen.com, which offers allergy “forecasts.” In New York City, where the temps could hit 70 degrees Saturday, allergy symptoms will “become more severe,” the site says. April is generally the worst month of allergy season,

President Obama stood Friday with the Rev. Al Sharpton and accused Republicans of trying to keep millions of Americans from voting, in a fiery speech days after new revelations about Sharpton’s past as an FBI informant. “The right to vote is threatened today in a way that it has not been since the Voting Rights Act became law nearly five decades ago,” Obama told the annual convention of Sharpton’s National Action Network in Manhattan. Obama’s appearance represented a presidential seal of approval of Sharpton’s role as a civil rights activist, amid the new revelations about how Sharpton used a wire to record

Two years before the Boston Marathon bombing, the Russian government concealed key information on one of the killers that might have thwarted the attack, a new report charges.Kremlin officials intercepted a phone conversation in which Tamerlan Tsarnaev discussed Islamic jihad with his mother, but they withheld the information from the FBI, according to the U.S. inspector general report that comes as the one-year anniversary of the bombing approaches. Had the FBI been privy to the red-flag phone call, it would have prompted the bureau to take an extensive look at Tsarnaev, according to The New York Times. “Had they known what the

President Barack Obama is planning to sign two new executive actions aimed at narrowing the wage gap between men and women Tuesday, even as the Obama White House pays its female staffers less than men.The first executive action will be an order banning federal contractors from retaliation against employees who disclose or ask about their wages, according to reports. His other executive action will require federal contractors to submit data to the government about their employees compensation by sex and race. On Tuesday — the day advocates have labelled “Equal Pay Day” to symbolize the amount of time women have to

Dark markets may be more harmful

Fears that high-speed traders have been rigging the U.S. stock market went mainstream last week thanks to allegations in a book by financial author Michael Lewis, but there may be a more serious threat to investors: the increasing amount of trading that happens outside of exchanges. Some former regulators and academics say so much trading is now happening away from exchanges that publicly quoted prices for stocks on exchanges may no longer properly reflect where the market is. And this problem could cost investors far more money than any shenanigans related to high frequency trading. When the average investor, or even

The Obama administration is poised to entertain a flood of new clemency applications from thousands of federal prisoners who were given harsh sentences under mandatory-minimum laws following drug convictions, Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday. Holder said in a short videotaped statement that he wants to shrink the federal prison population by a modest amount while ensuring ´that those who have paid their debts have a chance to become productive citizens.´ At the center of the move is a set of old sentencing rules that punished crack-cocaine offenders with more time behind bars than users or traffickers of powder cocaine.

Former Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) said a number of junior GOP senators considering a presidential run in 2016 do not yet have the experience — specifically naming Rand Paul (Ky.), Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ted Cruz (Texas). The former 1996 GOP presidential candidate sounded particularly skeptical of Cruz in an interview this week with The Wichita Eagle. "A number of the younger members, first-termers like Rand Paul, Rubio and that extreme-right-wing guy, Ted Cruz — all running for president now. I don´t think they´ve got enough experience yet," Dole said. The 90-year-old former senator said, however, his main concern about 2016 is living

The Citizens Commission on Benghazi, a self-selected group of former top military officers, CIA insiders and think-tankers, declared Tuesday in Washington that a seven-month review of the deadly 2012 terrorist attack has determined that it could have been prevented – if the U.S. hadn´t been helping to arm al-Qaeda militias throughout Libya a year earlier. ´The United States switched sides in the war on terror with what we did in Libya, knowingly facilitating the provision of weapons to known al-Qaeda militias and figures,´ Clare Lopez, a member of the commission and a former CIA officer, told MailOnline. She blamed the Obama administration

If Jeb reaches for the nomination, there will be a titanic battle between the party establishment and the Tea Party. Steve Schmidt, McCain’s strategist in 2008, insists that in the end Republicans usually settle on the most electable candidate. To get by, this Bush may be forced to trim his positions, although the cautionary tale of Romney suggests that he would have to tack artfully and carefully for the sake of the general election. Certainly he will have the resources to outlast, discredit, and disqualify his rivals.

Washington - Michelle Obama said "splurging is the key to life" if you regularly eat right and stay active. Her biggest guilty pleasure: French fries. "How would you appreciate vegetables if you never had chocolate?" she asked. "You couldn´t live without a little chocolate, a little French fries." The first lady took questions from children reporters Monday after appearing at the White House Easter Egg Roll. She told the children that if they eat right the majority of the time, then a splurge or snack is not going to hurt them. "I still splurge when I can, but that's why I try to exercise almost every day," she said.

There’s a pattern of falsifying statistics throughout the entire Census Bureau. And anyone who attempts to blow the whistle on the fraud is either retaliated against or ignored, according to two new sources who have experienced the process firsthand. As I’ve been writing for more than six months, the Census Bureau office in Philadelphia uncovered a case of fraud in 2010, did nothing about it and allowed the practice to continue. In that instance, a data collector named Julius Buckmon was faking reports that went into the nation’s all-important jobless tally and consumer-inflation survey. Because the Census Bureau’s surveys are scientific — meaning

Public Trust: Sixty-one percent polled say President Obama lies "some of the time" or "most of the time" on matters of national importance. Americans have to ask: Why do we let him get away with it? It´s no surprise that a Fox News poll of 1,012 registered voters last week found immense distrust of a president whose main domestic initiative was based on a lie. The shock is that the same poll found his disapproval level down to its lowest since last fall. Asked, "How often do you think Barack Obama lies to the country on important matters?" 37% replied "most of

New audio reveals an Eastern Connecticut State University professor warning that Republicans will “want things to go back — not to to 1955, but to 1855? if they win control of Congress in November. Republican victories could also put him out of a job, he cautioned. “We will live in a very, very, very different kind of country if that happens,” Professor Brent Terry told students in his Introduction to Creative Writing course, according to audio obtained by Campus Reform. “I mean, colleges will start closing up if these people have their way.” Over the course of his rant, Terry characterized conservatives

Global sea levels have risen by 8 inches (20cm) since 1880 and scientists predict they could rise up to 3ft (98cm) by 2100. But despite the UN’s recent threats of war, famine and extreme weather, such a dramatically different world caused by sea level rise can be hard to imagine. To help picture the future, Martin Vargic, an amateur graphic designer from Slovakia, has created a map depicting the planet with sea levels around 260ft (79m) higher than they are today. He imagines what Earth would look like if the ice sheets surrounding the North and South poles melted, releasing

It may not be tomorrow, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) says "something will happen" to force a Nevada rancher to obey a court order to stop grazing his cattle on federal land and pay his grazing fees. "It´s obvious that you can´t just walk away from this," Reid said in an April 18 interview with a Nevada´s KSNV-TV News 3 program “What’s Your Point?” "You can´t have a law that is -- we´re a nation of laws, not of men and women," he said. Thirty-eight Republican lawmakers, including such unlikely bedfellows as John McCain of Arizona and Ted Cruz of Texas, have joined to support a lawsuit challenging the legality of the Affordable Care Act and accusing the president of repeatedly ignoring the law he signed for political reasons. The lawmakers have signed onto a legal brief in support of a lawsuit filed by Sen. Ron Johnson, the Wisconsin Republican who is asking a federal court to overturn Obamacare’s special treatment for members of Congress and their staffs. “The unlawful executive action at issue in this case is not an isolated incident,” the brief

At a petite 5’3’’, Sage Santangelo may not look like a combat fighter at first glance. But the female second lieutenant has never let that hold her back from pursuing her dream of becoming an infantry officer in the Marine Corps. Growing up, Santangelo found she was always able to keep up with the guys and enjoyed playing hockey on all boys’ teams. But when she joined the Marines, Santangelo found the playing field changed; she was segregated into female-only training units and as a woman, was relegated to less strenuous physical training than her male counterparts. And that’s why,
