A Truly Great Phony
Creators Syndicate, by Thomas Sowell

Many years ago, I was a member of a committee that was recommending to whom grant money should be awarded. Since I knew one of the applicants, I asked if this meant that I should recuse myself from voting on his application. "No," the chairman said. "I know him too -- and he is one of the truly great phonies of our time." The man was indeed a very talented phony. He could convince almost anybody of almost anything -- provided that they were not already knowledgeable about the subject. He had once spoken to me very authoritatively about Marxian economics,

It is no surprise who the truly great phony of the title is.

Yes, he is laughing all the way to the bank. He really doesn´t care what happens to America. His followers will find out for sure once he has left office. He will leave a mess.

Truly a product of "everybody gets trophy" mentality. He will be revered because "he tried so hard" and "it wasn´t his fault".

The facts are he only tries hard at golf and most things (Syria, Egypt, healt care, economy, race relations...etc.) are his fault.

Dr. Sowell is right on!! The sad part of the Obama experiment (black....well half black....man becoming President) is that there were so many others who were truly qualified. All of Obama´s life and Michelle´s is a made-up series of life events that have now revealed in prime time just how phony they both are. They are both an "inch deep and a mile wide" on most any topic except vacations and fleecing the American public. On these, they are experts.

Wouldn´t you love to see a debate on far ranging topics between Obama and Dr. Sowell. Perhaps we could even pry Candy Crowley away from the All You Can Eat buffet to moderate and tilt the scales towards Obama ´cause he´ll need it.

Same as the 57 states with 2 to go. Our president masks incredible ignorance with stylistic oratory and over half of our country falls for it.

Obama should be a great embarrassment to Occidental College, Columbia University, and Harvard University. While I highly doubt that he is, they surely must wince when he speaks and makes such huge gaffs. Unfortunately for today´s college students, Obama is someone to aspire to be like - they don´t really have to know anything to become President as long as they can speak "cool".

From where I stand, it looks like Obama is just the front-man for a group of radicals who stay behind the scenes. He doesn´t know much but it doesn´t matter because he gives a veneer to their machinations that makes it all palatable enough for the public to allow Valerie Jarrett, et al to continue their promised destruction.

Obama is of low IQ but he loves the drone of his own whistling voice. The guy is a horrible speaker and the gaffs add to his ignorant rhetoric.
Obama is no better than Trayvon Martin´s girl friend he can just read and write cursive but the IQ is about the same. His hat size.
Dr. Sowell nails the phony on this one.

Obama showed his complete ignorance of U.S. history (even the history of Hawail where he misspent a few years of his youth) when he said that Japan had dropped "uh bomb" (singular) on Pearl Harbor. Obviously he had no real concept of what had happened on 7 December 1941 and had not even read a book or watched a movie concernig what had happened in his home town. (I heard...and saw...this gaffe, but it was not noted by Obama´s media pals.)

Phonies only exist because they are not challenged and their ignorance is not exposed. I believe that most members of the liberal media know that Obama is a phony, but they put up with him because they believe in a "greater good." Moreover the liberal media believes that if they can get a non-phony liberal in power it redeem them. Only problem is that the liberal media thinks that whats-her-name is the key to their redemption. :-)

It doesn´t matter what his IQ is, it is all about his race. There will be no questioning the black man even though he is less black than white. Anyone with a whit of self-respect would be offended to be seen as someone who is incapable of defending himself intellectually. I agree with #9, Obama is the face of the operation but definitely not the brains behind it.

It´s one thing to screw up your nation´s economy. It´s quite another to screw up the world, as in the Middle East meltdown.

Our leadership failures in Libya, Egypt,Syria and an emerging nuclear Iran (add your own here if you like) are causing rapidly escalating Middle East instability that may become uncontrollable diplomatically or militarily.

All thanks to our incompetent, indecisive, and feckless president who is in way over his head.

Although he is glib and has a ringing, important sounding timbre, Obama is a stupefyingly ignorant person whose habitual cranial flatulence--hundreds of instances, and counting--is aroma therapy to the Mainstream Media, fellow Democrats, and the tens of millions of Lofos. It makes perfect sense that a society as dumbed down as ours would call a public figure with such a middling, pedestrian intellect "brilliant." If Bush 43 had emitted one-tenth of the howlers that issue regularly from Obama´s piehole, late night comedians would still to this day be devoting entire monologues to them.

Although he retired ftrom radio on July 27, 2012--and I miss hearing his voice--G. Gordon Liddy used to call Thomas Sowell "the smartest man in America," and would talk to him regularly on air. When Walter E. Williams guest hosts for Rush, he always has a visit with Tom Sowell. Anything Sowell writes or says is worth taking in. To my knowledge he´s never been wrong before.

As usual, this is a truly insightful piece from Dr. Sowell. I worked in education admin for 35 years. I saw more than a few people who were more interested in being called "principal" than in actually being the school principal. Without exception, they were poor administrators who couldn´t be counted on in a crisis. Now we have a president who just wants to have the title and the perquisites, but doesn´t want to be bothered with the actual responsibilities.

My own father was a professional con artist. He would blow into a town and in two days would clean them to the bone and leave. He was so good, most of his victims would be thanking him and wishing him "God Speed!" He ruined a great many people and several once-rich wives. He died penniless, friendless and without a mind. I guess that is why I saw so quickly right through Øbama. I tried to warn my friends and co-workers about him. They had no time for my warnings.

I know what these people do and how dangerous they are to their unsuspecting victims. They are heartless. The blacks here in America are deeply in love with this empty man. He does not care a whit for them. He uses them for his own advantage and then easily tosses them aside. We have example after example of how he does this. Oprah was devastated when Michelle made her wait an hour in the WH residence hallway and then served her some cheap cookies and weak tea before glibly dismissing her. The Øbamas must have laughed for hours over that. Oprah donated millions in support for Øbama- and all she got for it was some cheap cookies. That´s how Øbama´s work with everyone they use. And just think how many American lives he now holds in his cold hands.

The presidential gaffe that struck me when I heard it was Barack Obama´s reference to a military corps as a military ´´corpse.´´ .... His mispronunciation of a common military term was especially revealing to someone who was once in the Marine Corps, not Marine ´´corpse.´´

Yes, certainly, Dr. Sowell.... IF it had been mere mispronunciation. As someone who came of age during the Viet Nam war, and who was influenced (to her own detriment) by the anti-war crowd of those years, trust me when I say his pronunciation was intentional. I recall late 60´s hippies and anti-war activists calling our Marines exactly that, ´´The Marine Corpse.´´ It was their oh-so-clever way of saying ´´baby killers´´, that the Corps was a killing machine.

However, as a former construction industry professional, I also know that when he said ´´shovel-ready´´ the first time, and often thereafter, that he definitely knew nothing about that business, nor, apparently, did anyone - ANYONE - in his inner, or outer, circle. NO ONE who could rewrite that phrase.

But then, a lot of us have known Obama was a phony in many ways since long before he was ever elected the first time around - to our eternal regret that we couldn´t convince others of that.

Obama is a lawyer. The very first thing you learn in law school, and if not in law school, by your mananging partner, is that you MUST assume (and it is VERY easy) that your client knows nothing. Then ANYTHING you say is billable. Once that knowledge is imparted, internalized, you yhink you are a Master of the Universe, and a good percentage of the LoFo´s will succumb to your "Great Intellect".

#22, you have described a "narcissist". Narcissists do not have empathy, this because they are so totally self-absorbed.

This is also why BO can tell lies with such ease and alacrity. Of course the stupid media (and i do mean stupid) let him get away with his lies, his deceitfulness and, yes, his phoniness (i suppose because they are phonies, too).

One useful aspect of being phony is, however, the obfuscation of the real intentions, the truth, how he really feels about the American people.

So many great comments, as usual!

And another brilliant and pithy essay by the great Dr. Sowell.

The war on standards

Paul has been writing about the war on standards in various aspects of our society, generally as a means of advancing the interests of minorities (or purporting to advance them, anyway). Now it appears that the decline of standards–indeed, the abolition of any standards at all–has come to the world of college debate. The Atlantic reports: These days, an increasingly diverse group of participants has transformed debate competitions, mounting challenges to traditional form and content by incorporating personal experience, performance, and radical politics. These “alternative-style” debaters have achieved success, too, taking top honors at national

(You always hear and read of a “fiasco,” a “defeat” a “disaster” at the Bay of Pigs, 53 years ago this week. But you rarely hear about the cause. Here it is.) "They fought like tigers," writes the CIA officer who helped train the Cubans who splashed ashore at the Bay of Pigs 53 years ago this week. "But their fight was doomed before the first man hit the beach." That CIA man, Grayston Lynch, knew something about fighting – and about long odds. The government has no business owning (or administering) all of this land. I am willing to concede federal courthouses and even the national parks to the feds, (even though some of the parks were created as a result of brutal land grabs. Shenandoah National Park which I look out at as I write this is an example.) but why is practically all of the far West run by the Federal Government? Here’s another thing I’ll concede. The feds get a few hundred God forsaken square miles in the northern Nevada desert to do nuclear testing and to dump nuclear fuel. Beyond that? People should own this land.

The debate over campaign contributions is never-ending for a simple reason: Both sides of the argument have merit. On the one hand, of course money is speech. For most citizens, contributing to politicians or causes is the most effective way to augment and amplify speech with which they agree. The most disdainful dismissers of this argument are editorialists and incumbent politicians who — surprise! — already enjoy access to vast audiences and don’t particularly like their monopoly being invaded by the unwashed masses or the self-made plutocrat. On the other hand, of course money is corrupting.

Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

The White House is going to war with another fox — and this time, it’s personal. The Wall Street Journal reports that a red fox has been causing chaos around the White House, tripping security alarms, digging up Michelle’s garden and distracting the president from his duties. The Secret Service won’t give any details about how often the fox trips the White House’s obviously sophisticated security alarms, but rest assured, officials say, they’re watching. President Obama was apparently “stunned” to see the fox roaming freely down the oft-photographed White House colonnade, home to the world’s shortest, but most dramatic, outdoor strolls. The bushy-tailed visitor

To "honor the dignity and work of immigrants," Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi helps Bishop Marc Andrus wash the feet of two children Thursday at Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Pelosi also used the occasion to talk about passing HR15 - bipartisan immigration legislation that her office says would "reduce the deficit by nearly $1 trillion, secure our borders, unite our families, protect our workers and provide an earned pathway to citizenship." The Democratic leader´s ceremony coincides with Pope Francis´ similar ceremony in Rome to mark Holy Week.

I began reading the entirety of the first section of the New York Times at nine years old, and continued that practice, more or less, for decades.(snip) ...the power of reverence, intrinsic to what I call the “cascade” of The Times: the near avalanche-like flow and distribution of information through electronic and print networks: through like-minded network newscasts, magazines, local newspaper s, blogs, daytime talk TV, late-night entertainment, statements at media award ceremonies, the celebrity Twitterverse, etc. The cascade rolls through Saturday Night Live, Jon Stewart, The New Yorker, the mouths of third-grade teachers, Elmo, Madonna and Susan Sarandon …through

GREENSBORO, Ga. — Golf holes the size of pizzas. Soccer balls on the back nine. A mulligan on every hole. These are some of the measures — some would say gimmicks — that golf courses across the country have experimented with to stop people from quitting the game. Golf has always reveled in its standards and rich tradition. But increasingly a victim of its own image and hidebound ways, golf has lost five million players in the last decade, according to the National Golf Foundation, with 20 percent of the existing 25 million golfers apt to quit in the next few years. People under 35 have especially spurned the game, saying it takes too

Imagine a vendor on the National Mall, selling burgers and dogs, who hasn’t paid his rent in 20 years. He refuses to recognize his landlord, the National Park Service, as a legitimate authority. Every court has ruled against him, and fines have piled up. What’s more, the effluents from his food cart are having a detrimental effect on the spring grass in the capital. Would an armed posse come to his defense, aiming their guns at the park police? Would the lawbreaker get prime airtime on Fox News, breathless updates in the Drudge Report, a sympathetic ear from Tea Party Republicans?

First, the good news: We are close enough to the end of the Obama presidency for his crowd to talk about a presidential library. Now, the bad news: Obama´s retirement is still 1,008 days distant. Plenty of time though to round up the dough to build it somewhere. Figure they need Solyndra-style money, at least $500 million. The last two presidents – Bill Clinton and George W. Bush -- built their legacy edifices totally with private money. [Snip] However, Obama supporters have a different take. They think taxpayers should put up $100 million in public money for Obama´s library.

Less than 16 hours after Chelsea Clinton announced she was pregnant, a lot of major news outlets started staring into the crystal ball of Chelsea’s womb, wondering what this currently floating zygotic multicellular being meant for the prospects of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, which is also a floating, zygotic, multicellular being. Their answer: The immaculately conceived Clinton child could mean everything. And no, it’s not just the fact that having a grandchild could be personally fulfilling to Hillary and Bill (mazel tov, by the way), or that a cute baby would be a sweet cherry on top of Hillary’s already

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Friday stood by his statement regarding embattled Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, saying on KSNV’s What’s Your Point?, “If anyone thinks by any figment of their imagination that what happened up there last week was just people rallying to somebody that was oppressed, 600 people came in armed. They had practiced. They had maneuvered.” Reid continued, “They knew what they were doing. They set up snipers in strategic locations with sniper rifles. They had assault weapons. They had automatic weapons. And they boasted about the fact that they put women and children, in fact one
