Flashback: Bryant Gumbel Insists
MLK´s Adultery Should Be Censored:
´Print the Legend´

Newsbusters, by Tim Graham

Original Article

Posted By:toledo, 8/25/2013 9:22:37 PM

This weekend´s promotion of the legend of Rev. Martin Luther King offers a reminder that the liberal media can blatantly state that it is their job to "print the legend," and not report on a historic figure´s flaws. In the fall of 1989, King´s longtime lieutenant Ralph Abernathy wrote a book titled "And the Walls Came Tumbling Down." Abernathy told the tale that Rev. King committed adultery with two women on the night before he was murdered. Bryant Gumbel, then a co-host of NBC´s Today, lectured: "When the truth collides with a legend, print the legend." Frankly, I am so tired of the "King Legend" and how he is somehow this third rail.

Reagan did more for this world by ending the Cold War and defusing a potential nuclear conflict, and the media could not wait to try to paint him as suffering from dementia and trying to dig skeletons up out of his closet.

King stood for some good things, but he was a serial adulterer.

Live with it, "black community".

Yes, it was common knowledge. FBI had it in their files and it was released through FOIA.

"Content of character, not color of skin" is a good and decent [if incomplete] standard.

Adultery is contemptible. Serial, multiple adultery is even worse.

One should be aware of both, and measure each as each of us chooses. We are free to reject the first under color of the second. To me, that´s not a thoughtful act. Like very many principles of life, the first was certainly expressed by many people along the way. That an adulterer also suggested it is not a positive. Too bad the choice of leaders wasn´t more discerning.

Oh. It occurs to me that the selectors of "civil rights leaders" still can´t detect rot in the fish. Too bad. Too, too bad.

We can guess what was in the FBI files that were sealed up for decades because if the truth were known the King holiday would not have been approved. The FOIA should produce those files.

MLK´s doctoral thesis was largely plagerized. That means he stole another man´s ideas and claimed them as his own. This made him a thief and a liar.

Fame and fortune brings willing and eager women out of the woodwork. Power is an aphrodisiac making for temptation but that a given it still is part of history--his history and his legend.

Doesn´t need to be in some stories where it isn´t part of the story but does in the stories of "the legend" and his whole life story.

But most of all, Gumbel and his ilk might try applying the same standards to all politicians, reverends, changers and patriots (such as the Tea Party and Sarah Palin, the demonized for dem power promotion. Like that will ever happen on a field that must be tilted to help some while hurting others for whatever reason--have we lost sight of the reason?

These censoring habits die hard. We have now endured a year and a half of it, courtesy of Benjamin Crump and Traydmom through the wretched MSM, on behalf of Saint Skittles.

Yep, print the legend, no sense letting facts or content of character have any relevance if they don´t fit the narrative, either then or now. While we´re at it, can we go ahead and censor all the adultery and criminal activity from the clan at Hyannis Port, and just print the Camelot tripe?

i´ve read a couple of biographies of mlk. they pretty much chronicled his life - the good and the bad. the emphasis was on how he peacefully and productively put forward the idea that blacks are equal to whites. in that regard he really was a hero in my opinion. good men often do bad things. i am reminded of david, who did some terrible things (adultery, murder) yet was still loved (and rewarded) by god.

How ´bout this: We´ll (whoever "we" is) censor MLK´s adulterous affairs and Ph.D. plagiarism if and when liberals censor Thomas Jefferson´s dalliance with Sally Hemmings and Dwight Eisenhower´s with his secretary. Better yet, why don´t we just report the historical reality and let the chips fall where they may. Bryant Gumbel´s meanderings means about as much to me as fish offal.

Time to publicly release the "raw" files on MLK Jr. made by the Hoover FBI. Yes, the ones that prove his shameless adultery and plotting with Soviet Communists. It´s so typical of leftists to whitewash their "spiritual" heroes, while at the same time dragging out every spec of dirt they can on Republicans.

"When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."

That´s from "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," the best western ever made. In it, one character (playe by Jimmy Stewart) takes credit for killing a local thug, who was actually killed by the John Wayne character. To have told the truth could have resulted in a murder charge for the actual killer, so it was not cowardice for the person who reluctantly took the credit and wanted to set the record straight when the actual killer died.

We have known forever that MLK was a "minister" who stepped out his wife. How is it printing the legend to ignore it? It is not like this is some new information, except maybe for the detail that MLK was fornicating right before his death.

It seems like any person who dies is somehow shielded from scrutiny, as if being killed while you are fighting for a cause is some cure for your moral failings. I will confess to thinking it is a scandal that MLK has his own holiday while Washington and Lincoln now have to share their day with the likes of Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

King was a brave man who did much to change attitudes and to change laws regarding black people in America. He used his position as a Christian minister to appeal to white Americans and see that God´s universal love for all peoples could not justify separatism. Christians reflected on this and supported changes in civil rights. King did not do alone, but he was the front man and a charismatic leader and deserves our respect. I do not refer to him as "Doctor" King, however. He plagiarized his dissertation. As for his marital infidelity, I wonder if that should have any bearing on our referring to him as "Reverend."

I have been watching documentaries on Washington, Jefferson, Columbus, etc. recently, and the standard of "Print the Legend" never came into play.

Must the opposite, in fact. Every real or imagined character flaw was trotted out in order to supposedly give a clearer picture of the person.

So why is MLK different? I think you know the answer. If not. look to how JJ and Al Sharpton are currently treated.

The Senate Intelligence Committee voted Thursday to make public a long-awaited report that concludes that the CIA’s use of brutal interrogation measures did not produce valuable intelligence and that the agency repeatedly misled government officials about the severity and success of the program. The decision, opposed by three Republicans on the panel, means that the findings will be sent to the White House and the CIA, putting the agency in the awkward position of having to declassify a document that delivers a scathing verdict on one of the most controversial periods in its history.

Japan recently turned over to the United States enough weapons-grade nuclear material to make dozens of nuclear bombs. This was one of President Barack Obama’s few foreign policy “successes,” as part of his nuclear-disarmament initiative. But his foreign-policy successes may be more dangerous than his “failures.” Back in 2005, Senator Barack Obama urged the Ukrainians to drastically reduce their conventional weapons, including anti-aircraft missiles and tons of ammunition. Ukraine had already rid itself of nuclear missiles, left over from the days when it had been part of the Soviet Union. Would Vladimir Putin have sent Russian troops so boldly into Ukraine
