A transgender woman attacked last weekend in Harlem has died in a case the police said they were now investigating as a hate crime after learning that the man accused of hitting her may have used antigay epithets. (Snip) At the time of the arrest, police officers did not realize that the confrontation might have involved bias. At some point later, prosecutors said, a witness went into the Area 6 station house and told the police that homophobic language had been used. The Police Department’s hate crimes task force is now investigating the case. Prosecutors also said that more, and graver, charges could be

Comments:
Now THIS, under 0bama, is what a true "hate crime" is. And, the double whammy, Islan Nettles was black and a transgender. Expect 0bama to shed a tear on national television over this.

New York - Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday night that excessive partisanship flowing through the nation´s political system is causing the U.S. to march "backwards instead of forward" and pointed to fall elections as a sign of how the country might tackle problems. A new U.S. Army regulation that bans an array of natural hairstyles has sparked some backlash, with African American women arguing that the rule has a racial and cultural component. Released on Monday, Army Regulation 670-1, includes multiple rules that specifically address hairstyles such as cornrows, twists and braids that are popular with African American women. Among the unauthorized styles are dreadlocks and twists, which have been banned since 2005, (Snip) The move has prompted a White House petition that has gathered over 10,000 signatures and asks that the Army reconsider the ban.

Washington - If George W. Bush, budding artist, has learned one lesson about his newfound passion, it is this: “Don’t paint your wife.” The former president will be releasing more than two dozen paintings in his first-ever art exhibit, a gallery of world leaders whom he has pictured on canvas. But if it is diplomatically delicate to capture the likeness of, say, Tony Blair or Vladimir V. Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) was prepped for an appropriations hearing on the defense budget when he took his turn Wednesday afternoon, flipping papers on his lap, reading from them and commending the witness for his department’s prompt response to a letter Coats had sent about a military accounting office in his home state. It was all fairly innocuous except for one problem: Coats was in the completely wrong hearing complimenting the wrong witness. After he’d finished a lengthy opening to his question, a staffer slipped Coats a piece of paper. Coats read it to himself, looked up, and said, “I just got a note saying I’m at the wrong hearing.”

While the Federal Communications Commission requires phone companies to retain for 18 months records on "toll" or long-distance calls, the rule´s application is vague for subscribers of unlimited phone plans because they do not get billed for individual calls.

Though the rules still must be approved by the Council of the European Union, if passed this would be the first Europe-wide law combating what lawmakers call “the detriment of the availability or quality of internet access services” by Internet access providers.
