The ObamaCare Prisoner´s Dilemma
Wall Street Journal, by James Taranto

Original Article

With Barack Obama safely re-elected and ObamaCare´s main provisions coming into effect, some supporters are striking a triumphal note. Former Enron adviser Paul Krugman, for instance, is assuring his readers that Americans will greet ObamaCare with flowers: Moreover, all the early indications are that the law will, in fact, give millions of Americans who currently lack access to health insurance the coverage they need, while giving millions more a big break in their health care costs. And because so many people will see clear benefits, health reform will prove irreversible. This achievement will represent a huge defeat for the conservative agenda of

While reading that (it went way over my head - not a clue with what he was trying to say) ... something occurred to me about "prisoner."

Since there will be rationing, does that mean someone serving a life sentence or on death row will no longer receive anything than ordinary care? No long term cancer treatment, no transplants, No AIDS drugs? Their contribution to society is nil. Why treat them? Just provide hospice care until the end?

No, that means the rest of us will get rationed care and pay "through the nose" to cover cost of illegals and the so-called "disadvantaged."

So, to me, "Americans who currently lack access to health insurance " does not mean they do not have access to health care. Heck, with health insurance it is hard to get some health care done as you fight with the insurance company.

... and "prisoner´s dilemma" refers to the game-theory scenario centering around cooperation and betrayal, illustrating how people in a pinch may not work together even though doing so would be to their advantage.

The Wikipedia article (yes, I know...) is actually not bad.

Obama: Putin will lose — eventually

BRUSSELS — President Barack Obama said Wednesday that Vladimir Putin is just the latest in a series of history’s losers, comparing the Russian leader to those who came up short in World War I, World War II, the Cold War, the U.S. civil rights movement, apartheid and other major 20th-century struggles. Time’s on his side, Obama argued. People always struggle to be free and eventually succeed — and they will in Russia too, even if, for now, it’s ruled by a flouter of international law and obstinate believer in “that recycled maxim that might, somehow, makes right.” Putin — who waited six

ROME — President Barack Obama was once the biggest superstar on the international stage. On Thursday, he heads to the Vatican to benefit from the popularity of his replacement: Pope Francis. The visit is a rare chance for Obama to associate himself with a world leader whose cool factor far outweighs his own, and it comes at a critical time in his presidency. The White House is still recovering from what aides call a “lost year,” and the president’s job approval ratings at home are dipping to new lows. Obama will use the closely watched meeting to show how aligned he is

Sailors leaving Navy over stress on

A Navy F-18 fighter pilot and former Top Gun instructor is publicly warning admirals that retention is beginning to suffer from the military’s relentless social conditioning programs. Cmdr. Guy Snodgrass, until recently a Pentagon speech writer for the chief of naval operations, Adm. Jonathan Greenert, said sailors are becoming fed-up with the constant emphasis on social issues — an apparent reference to gays in the military, women in combat and ending sexual harassment. “Sailors continue to cite the over-focus on social issues by senior leadership, above and beyond discussions on war fighting — a fact that demoralizes junior and mid-grade officers alike,”

One by one, the myths of the Affordable Care Act have been revealed. When the curtain on open enrollment falls on March 31, the last remaining big myth of ObamaCare will be fully exposed: The individual mandate has failed. After a last-ditch effort with President Obama himself encouraging "young invincibles" to sign up before the deadline, the administration is scrambling to boost enrollment. On Tuesday, the White House announced that people who applied for coverage on the federal health-insurance exchange will have until mid-April to finish the paperwork. The mandate was supposed to be the administration´s magical elixir for the assorted shortcomings

But there´s a key function on the federal exchange that remains inactive: "The mechanism to reconcile payments between the government and insurance companies. Meanwhile, the world watches, stupefied, as Russian ships move to our doorstep. Trash-talking a nation that just swallowed up a chunk of its neighbor and upended the global order doesn´t seem like a very thoughtful strategy, given the weakness of U.S. sanctions following Russia´s annexation of Ukraine´s Crimea. But that was what President Obama seemed to be doing Tuesday in claiming Russia was nothing but small fry in world affairs. ObamaCare is a fiasco. Why don´t the media acknowledge that? And it´s fair to ask: Why don´t they ridicule it? After all, in the Bush years the press re-ran President George W. Bush in front of the "Mission Accomplished" banner time and again, did they not? Perhaps Joe Biden at the signing ceremony saying into an open microphone that this was a "big (blanking) deal" would suffice. How do we know ObamaCare is failing? Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has said that ´a trained ape´ could do a better job managing American interests in Afghanistan than President Obama. The retired Republican made the insult while doing a phone-in interview for Greta Van Susteren´s Fox News show on Tuesday. He argued that the President made a serious error by failing to negotiate a status forces agreement with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Gawker points out that such an agreement would effectively commit the United States to having a certain number of troops in the country for a number of years beyond the already-agreed-upon plan which

A pair of potentially catastrophic cases will be argued before the Supreme Court on Tuesday. These cases are brought by privately held, for-profit corporations that are arguing their religious convictions should preclude them from offering employees the health insurance required by law. Specifically, these private employers don’t want to allow their employees’ insurance to cover some forms of birth control because, contrary to medicaland scientific evidence, they believe some birth control causes abortions. Corporations are not people. Corporations cannot have religious views. If religious rights are extended to corporations, it puts us on a slippery slope where any private company

At the end of a joint news conference with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in the Netherlands on Tuesday, the applause for Barack Obama came from a grand total of one guy. One. After thanking the crowd twice for suffering through his boring, standard worn-out spiel, Obama looked around the room, expecting the usual fanfare and applause he receives from his loyal followers back home. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) said the fault of struggling to sign up on the Obamacare exchanges didn’t lie with the faulty website, but with the people who weren’t “educated on how to use the Internet.” Explaining the reasoning behind the latest Obamacare delay, Reid said too many people just didn’t know to use their computer properly and needed more time. Apparently, it had nothing to do with the well-documented failings of the website that have embarrassed the White House for months. “We have hundreds of thousands of people who tried to sign up who didn’t get through,” he said.

The Obama administration is prepared to give prospective Obamacare enrollees another half-month to signup for insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act website, healthcare.gov, treating the law´s March 31 regulatory deadline as a formality for Americans who claim they tried in earnest to sign up in time. As the U.S. Supreme Court weighed the constitutionality of a contraception coverage mandate Tuesday morning, a federal appeals court heard a separate legal challenge that could have much more sweeping implications for the future of President Obama´s health care law. And if the oral arguments before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. On Tuesday night two things happened. 1. A trio of Secret Service agents were sent home from Amsterdam after one was found passed out drunk in a hotel hallway. 2. The Obama Administration announced (another) extension of the enrollment deadline for Obamacare signups. At first glance, these two events have little in common with one another. But, modern politics is all about narratives and storylines. And, both of these events confirm a growing concern from the public about President Obama: That he´s just not up to governing his administration and, by extension, the country, effectively.
