Detaining my partner:
a failed attempt at intimidation

Guardian (U.K.), by Glenn Greenwald

Original Article

Posted By:drive, 8/18/2013 6:56:53 PM

At 6:30 am this morning my time - 5:30 am on the East Coast of the US - I received a telephone call from someone who identified himself as a "security official at Heathrow airport." He told me that my partner, David Miranda, had been "detained" at the London airport "under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act of 2000." David had spent the last week in Berlin, where he stayed with Laura Poitras, the US filmmaker who has worked with me extensively on the NSA stories. A Brazilian citizen, he was returning to our home in Rio de Janeiro this morning

A bit of irony that someone named "Miranda" was held for 9 hours and questioned in a legal vacuum.

Ha - good one, ZM.

As for defining "partner", if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, etc. - and this one is quacking its head off. These days, if "partner" is not qualified - say by "business" - you may be assured it means that partner B is partner A´s main squeeze.

#5 - In another article on this, it did say the two men lived together.

In normal circumstances, that is if you or I were the ones doing the writing - partner, unspecified, could have another meaning. But I disagree that these days it would have any other meaning except in some sort of exceptional context.

they weren´t traveling together, Greenwald was at home in Brasil.

This wasn´t a really brilliant idea by the UK authorities. If they felt they would/could intimidate Greenwald, Miranda or Poitras I think they´ve rather done the opposite...

Here is the true irony of the story. Who is it that has protected and smooched up to the most evil President this nation has ever elected? The MEDIA! Right now they soft ball Øbama and his cronies and they dispariage the people who have tried to sound the alram of the abuse of power going on by Øbama and his Democrats who empower him. They refuse to report, refuse to investigate. They are the watchdogs of freedom! And now, they are under attack themselves and they don´t like it. Well, they had better start doing their jobs before it is too late- if it is not already too late.

#2 and other commenters who are only interested in the relationship of these two men, who cares? After reading the story, that is all you can think about? If it was a man writing about his wife being detained, you would be outraged and applauding their values and spirit. I would like people like the author and his partner to be welcomed by fellow conservatives.

The inference that we have a Tab A/Slot B situation casts much of what has passed before in a different light.

So, Mattingly has to play a part in this ~ not just with Assange!

This is quite a remarable dramaturge they´ve worked up that has, in the end, the glorification of patriotic gay blades ~ or rather the casting of gay blades in a patriotic light as the ONLY POSSIBLE PATRIOTS who also know the secret of the universe.

Bet Putin thought he had another one on his hands.....

#10, we all get sidetracked from time to time, though judging from some of the other threads on this topic, not everyone thinks it´s a side issue (though I tend to agree that it is). If everyone got scolded though, as you have scolded us, for every time that what someone perceives as a minor issue was addressed, it would be a pretty unpleasant forum. Sorry to have hit a nerve. That´s what I get for possibly giving the impression that I meant something snarky about gays, because I didn´t. I meant something snarky about the state of the language.

Sad to see so many on this forum fixated on the word "partner" in the article. It does not take much of a leap to imagine some of them being right at home in the crowds of Germans that cheered on the Brown Shirts and Nazis that beat and pummeled the Jews and others on the streets, believing they were safe and immune while at the same time missing and/or denying the evil standing in front of them.

The issue of being homosexual is relevant only peripherally. The author and his partner are yet another group of Obama groupies who are dismayed to have found they don´t necessarily share all of O´s philosophies. If you elect a fool on the basis of a single issue you deserve what you get otherwise.

Just like the word "gay" (it used to mean happily excited) was corrupted as part of the effort to sanitize homosexuality, the word "partner" (it used to mean an associate) has similarly been corrupted in an attempt to normalize the perverted practice of homosexuality.

This is perhaps the most distressing thread I have ever encountered on Lucianne.com.

The fascist UK authorities detained a citizen of a foreign country, without reason or legal representation, for an extended period, then stripped him of his belongings and summarily released him. I agree with the author, the incident seems to be a ham-handed and despicable attempt to intimidate the media.

I suppose some of you folks are accepting of the persecution and murder of Coptic Christians in Egypt because somewhere a Priest abused a boy.

DO NOT rejoice in injustice perpetrated on a fellow human because there is something about them you don´t like! Evildoers depend on this to succeed.

Be involved in mankind.

But you´re right - this is a very disturbing situation - a seemingly unreasonable searching (of the man´s brain) and seizure (of his time and possessions), and worthy of the KGB.

#23 that has happened to me. Our local whiny drama queen beat on my front door and yelled my house was on fire. I opened the front door, so he could see though my house and out my back door, where my smoker was fired up as I cooked some beef, just like I do almost every weekend...

In this thread, we are making fun of Greenwood and his whiny, drama queen self.

But why? Why "make fun of" Greenwood over this story? Not one person here has shrugged and said, "Huh. That happens to me every time I fly - grow up!" If Greenwood really were a drama queen, where are all the level-headed debunkers pointing out that what happened to his friend was no big deal, and he´s just throwing a fit over nothing?

Nobody has disputed his claim that what happened was out of the ordinary and sinister. Instead, they´ve opted to side with the sinister government heavies on the premise that it doesn´t matter what they do to certain classes of people. I guess I don´t need to tell you where that line of thinking can end up taking you.

LONDON - Peaches Geldof, the wild-child second daughter of concert organizer Bob Geldof who worked as a model, a television presenter and a fashion writer and filled the pages of British tabloids with her late-night antics, has died at age 25. There was no immediate word on the cause of her death at her home in Wrotham, Kent, southeast England. Her father said in a statement Monday: "Peaches has died. We are beyond pain." "She was the wildest, funniest, cleverest, wittiest and the most bonkers of all of us," he said. "Writing 'was' destroys me afresh. What a beautiful child. How is this possible that we will not see her again? How is that bearable? We loved her and will cherish her forever."

Wellington -He may be only eight months old. But Prince George made an assured appearance on his debut royal tour this morning. Arriving in New Zealand on the first day of a three-week trip Down Under, the third in line to the throne took the windswept welcome in his stride, although he looked a little chilly in a cream jumper and shorts. Scroll down for video -With a lifetime of royal engagements ahead of him, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are understandably protective of their young son. Democrats are facing a senior problem that could get even worse this year. The party has traditionally had trouble with older voters, losing the group aged 65 and over by 21 points in 2010 — when Republicans picked up 63 seats — and by 12 points in the 2012 presidential race. Seniors are the GOP’s most reliable voting bloc in midterm years, turning out in higher numbers than Democratic base voters. A recent Gallup poll showed seniors have become even more Republican over the last two decades; in 2013, 48 percent considered themselves Republican. That spells trouble for Democrats, who are already facing

The Democratic National Committee is furious by a conservative website’s ad campaign that depicts Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi clad in a bikini in a provocative pose with her tongue sticking out. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, called on Republicans to press Breitbart News to remove the artwork — one of several suggestive images on the website promoting the new California site. The image of Pelosi, beneath one of California Gov. Jerry Brown’s face photo-shopped onto a flexing body builder, includes the sub-head: “Because you can’t make this s— up.” “To say the least,

Add Bryan Cranston, the star of TV´s recent hit "Breaking Bad" and a new Broadway play about former President Lyndon B. Johnson, to Team Obamacare. In an interview with Yahoo News “global anchor” Katie Couric, the actor called Obamacare the highlight of President Obama´s legacy. “Now’s the time to stake a claim to leave your legacy,” he encouraged Obama. “I personally believe that his health care program is fantastic. Yes, there are problems. Anything worth while is going to go through a growing pains period. But this is his legacy and I think it’s a great one because I don’t

American public school students sick of the smaller portions and healthier offerings they get at lunch thanks to Michelle Obama´s anti-obesity initiatives are sounding off on social media. Just a month after school lunch participation saw the steepest drop on record following the implementation of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, students tired of going home hungry are making sure the first lady knows why. ´I´ll never forgive Michelle Obama for this school lunch,´ tweeted one angry student. [Snip] The extremely negative reviews have over a million kids refusing to eat the offerings, an ironic result for legislation meant to combat
