Al Jazeera America promises no-frills news
as it looks for a U.S. foothold with CNN

When Al Jazeera America hits TV on Tuesday, viewers will see familiar faces — and a new approach. CNN vets Joie Chen and Soledad O’Brien are lending their big names to the in-depth documentary show “America Tonight,” and former NBC journalist John Seigenthaler will anchor prime-time’s “Nightly News.” But beyond the plucked-from-elsewhere star power, Al Jazeera America won’t resemble anything else in cable news. “I really saw it as a completely different kind of opportunity,” says Chen, who signed up as anchor for what has been billed as the station’s flagship program after network brass pitched her a show in

After remarks he made at the National Action Network conference this week and various actions on voting rights and equality he’s taken over the past several months, MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry is starting to wonder if Attorney General Eric Holder is “the Obama we had been hoping for.” Even though she admitted it’s not entirely fair to “separate” Holder from President Barack Obama, that’s the question the host posed to her panel Saturday morning. “I think he may be the greatest addition to the entire Obama Administration,” Fordham University’s Christina Greer told Harris-Perry, saying the “foundational work”

KIEV/MOSCOW - Armed separatists took virtual control of a city in eastern Ukraine on Saturday and Kiev prepared troops to deal with what it called an "act of aggression by Russia". Pro-Russian activists carrying automatic weapons seized government buildings in Slaviansk and set up barricades on the outskirts of the city. Official buildings in several neighboring towns were also attacked. The developments have increased concerns of a possible "gas war" that could disrupt energy supplies across the continent. The hope is that such a system will allow Vermont to get costs down closer to Canada’s, as well as improve health by coordinating care and ensuring universal coverage. Following the massacre of grammar-school children in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, high-powered weapons have been used to kill innocent victims in more senseless public incidents. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators.
