John Adams and his son, John Quincy, were the second and sixth presidents. George H.W. Bush and sonGeorge W. were 41 and 43. Joe Kennedy dreamed of sending three or four sons to the White House and might have succeeded with two or three, but tragedy intervened. Throw in a few Cuomos, Daleys, Rockefellers and Tafts, and for a republic founded on aversion to kings and royal rogues, political dynasties have prospered here. Family ties can make politics profitable in the entertainment culture, where celebrity trumps all. President Obama last month nominated Caroline Kennedy to be the U.S. ambassador to Japan,
From the time-delay lock on Leonid Brezhnev’s cigarette box, to Nixon’s private strategy briefing with China’s new US ambassador to China after his landmark meeting with Chairman Mao in 1972, the tapes chronicle Nixon in the months before his presidency was finally engulfed by the Watergate scandal. The 94 tapes cover conversations from April 9 to July 12, 1973 when the secret White House taping system that would lead to his downfall, was dismantled following its disclosure to Congress. As the Watergate scandal closes in on Nixon, forcing the resignation of many of his top officials, the tapes show him
LANCASTER, Calif.— C. Gordon Fullerton, a former astronaut who flew on two space shuttle missions and had an extensive career as a research and test pilot for NASA and the Air Force, died Wednesday, the space agency said. He was 76. Fullerton suffered a severe stroke in 2009 and had been confined to a long-term care facility in Lancaster for most of the past 3 ½ years, NASA said in a statement. An astronaut from 1969 to 1986, Fullerton spent 382 hours in space on his shuttle missions and flew more than 135 different types of aircraft as a test
With names like Pineapple Grenade, Even Keel, Night Vision and New Recruit, two Iraq war veterans are hoping to tap into the popularity of craft beers by opening a brewery that sells brews named in military lingo. Thomas Wilder and Neil McCanon, best friends since junior high, were both deployed to Iraq during the war, Wilder as a combat engineer equipment operator and McCanon as an armored crewman. When Wilder, who has always enjoyed brewing beer, returned from Iraq in 2005, he had trouble finding work.
Even the mayor says his taxes are too high. Egg Harbor Township Mayor James "Sonny" McCullough is selling his waterfront home because he says he can´t afford the property taxes, according to a report by the Press of Atlantic City. McCullough, 71, said he has been priced out of the home by local rates and by a township-wide revaluation last year, the report said. "It´s more than what I can afford," the mayor told the newspaper. "It´s kind of disappointing. I thought I would be able to live and die in my home, but it´s gotten to the point where
Facing an active campaign by grass-roots activists to defeat him in next year´s primary, Sen. Lamar Alexander penned a letter to the state´s largest newspaper defending his pragmatic, "problem solving" approach to governing. The letter in The Tennessean defends his record as a conservative who knows how to "get results." "Well, I learned to count in Maryville City Schools," Alexander writes. "So I know that if you only have 45 votes and you need 60 senators to get something important done like balancing the budget and fixing the debt, then you have to work with other people — that is,
I have to tell you something. It is not often that I, El Rushbo, get surprised. Yesterday I ended up surprised. One of my closest friends, Roger Ailes -- you know, I met Roger Ailes in 1989 or ´90 in New York, a couple of years after I had moved there, and he ended up being the executive producer of my TV show. He used to have these absolutely fabulous Saturday afternoon summertime water volleyball games with all the crowd at his house. At the time he lived at Croton-on-Hudson. And I´ve maintained a close relationship with him. Yesterday this
In a discussion about President Barack Obama’s forthcoming push for reforms to college tuition costs, The Washington Post’s The Fix blogger and reporter Chris Cillizza was asked how the president can keep on message given the “gnats of August” regularly redirecting his attention. Cillizza pardoned Obama for his inability to be the master of his own destiny, saying that he is the first president in history to have to contend with the fleeting passions that regularly overtake internet forums like Twitter. MSNBC host Chris Matthews’ wife, Kathleen Matthews, asked Cillizza how Obama is navigating the “gnats of August” which are
Outside of the federal government´s Bureau of Labor statistics, the Gallup polling organization also tracks the nation´s unemployment rate. While the BLS and Gallup findings might not always perfectly align, the trends almost always do and the small statistical differences just haven´t been worthy of note. But now Gallup is showing a sizable 30 day jump in the unemployment rate, from 7.7% on July 21 to 8.9% today. This is an 18-month high. At the end of July, the BLS showed a 7.4% unemployment rate, compared to Gallup´s 7.8%. Again, a difference not worthy of note. But Gallup´s upward trend to
CHICAGO — Working on a tight timeframe, Illinois is building an 800-person army of temporary workers to help people sign up for health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act. The “in-person counselor” jobs, located in every corner of the state, range from a $9-an-hour part-time evening job in Clinton County to a $45,000-a-year project coordinator position in Chicago for someone with experience in community organizing and public speaking. The workers will help consumers apply for coverage, and will answer questions and explain differences between the insurance policies offered on the new online marketplace. They will help consumers figure out
WASHINGTON- The National Security Agency declassified three secret U.S. court opinions Wednesday showing how it scooped up as many as 56,000 emails and other communications by Americans with no connection to terrorism annually over three years, how it revealed the error to the court and changed how it gathered Internet communications. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper authorized the release Wednesday. The opinions show that when the NSA reported that to the court in 2011, the court ordered the NSA to find ways to limit what it collects and how long it keeps it. The NSA reported the problems it
The parents of the slain Australian baseball player are not the only ones hurting today as the relatives of the accused teen shooters have also spoken out about their sons, clinging onto the belief that they are not murderers. As 15-year-old James Edwards and 16-year-old Chancey Luna are held in Duncan, Oklahoma after being charged with the first degree murder of 22-year-old Chris Lane, new revelations about their personal histories give a glimpse into their troubled family lives. With one of the boy’s mothers in jail and the other´s stepfather having died last year, many are connecting their online behavior-
The soldier on trial for the deadly 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood refused to put up a fight on Wednesday, resting his case without calling a single witness or testifying in his own defense. Major Nidal Hasan could face the death penalty if convicted for the attack that killed 13 people and wounded more than 30 others at the Texas military base. But when given the chance to rebut prosecutors´ lengthy case - which included nearly 90 witnesses - the Army psychiatrist declined. About five minutes after court began Wednesday, a day after prosecutors rested their case, the judge
Trenton — In case anyone had any doubts on where Gov. Chris Christie stands on climate change, he made his position crystal clear this afternoon: It´s real and it´s a problem. In vetoing a bill (S2946) that would have required New Jersey to stay in a regional program intended to curb greenhouse gases — a program Christie plans to leave by the end of the year — the governor said "climate change is real." He added that "human activity plays a role in these changes" and that climate change is "impacting our state." Christie´s words are his strongest to date in regards to
It’s hard to fathom how or why our administration ever thought the Muslim Brotherhood saw democracy as other than a means to an end — and a particularly repellent one at that — in the first place. It’s not as if the MB is subtle. They have proclaimed who they are since their founding by Hasan al Banna in 1928 and have not wavered in any significant way since in their global jihadist goals. They have also been unstinting in their massive misogyny, homophobia and rigid support of Shariah law über alles (quite literally über alles, since the Brotherhood were —
The images of three youths police say murdered Melbourne baseballer Christopher Lane have emerged. The Oklahoma teens, who face first-degree murder charges, have been named as Chancey Luna, James Edwards and Michael Jones, News.com.au has reported. But their parents yesterday protested their innocence. Jennifer Luna, whose son is suspected of firing the fatal shot, claimed her son was at home saying: "My son is not that way. My son is a good kid." Earlier today, former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer has urged Australian tourists to boycott the US in the wake of the shooting murder of the Melbourne baseball star.
Former President Bill Clinton´s foundations spent a total of $50million on travel over the past decade, $12.1million of which was spent in just one year. An internal investigation into spending at the various charities that the former President runs found that the funds used for travel costs have gone up in recent years. The audit comes as new reports have revealed that the Clinton Foundation has been ´in the red´ for years even though the charity has raised hundreds of millions of dollars each year, showing the high cost of running the worldwide charity.
CAIRO — The world’s most influential Islamist movement is in danger of collapse in the land of its birth — its leaders imprisoned, its supporters slain and its activists branded as terrorists in what many are describing as the worst crisis to confront Egypt’s 85-year-old Muslim Brotherhood. In the week since Egypt’s new military-backed rulers ordered a brutal crackdown on camps filled with protesters calling for the reinstatement of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, the group that used its organizational muscle to win the country’s first democratic elections, held in late 2011 and early 2012, has been cast into disarray. Analysts
Waiting to Exhale author Terry McMillan alternately uses Twitter to bash the GOP and share warm and fuzzy life tips with her followers. Today´s social media message falls squarely in the former camp. McMillan, an Obama apologist of the highest order, lashed out at former Gov. Sarah Palin, promising violence should the two women ever end up in the same place at the same time.McMillan previously compared the GOP to Hitler and called Mitt Romney a sociopath.
OKLAHOMA CITY -- An Australian man attending an Oklahoma college on a baseball scholarship was shot and killed in what police described Monday as a random act of violence by three "bored" teenagers who decided to kill someone for the fun of it. Three boys, ages 15, 16, and 17, are in custody and face a court appearance Tuesday afternoon.Duncan Police Chief Danny Ford said Monday a woman called 911 after she saw Lane stagger across the road
When Craig Mazin first met his freshman roommate, Rafael Edward Cruz, he knew the 17-year-old Texan was not like other students at Princeton, or probably anywhere else for that matter. (Snip) By Mazin’s account and those of multiple members of Princeton’s class of 1992, the Ted Cruz who arrived as a college freshman in 1988 was nearly identical to the man who arrived in Washington as a freshman Republican senator in 2013: intelligent, confident, fixated on conservative political theory, and deeply polarizing.
Chris Lane is the Australian college student and baseball player who was murdered while jogging along a street in Duncan, Oklahoma. The perpetrators were three teenagers who were bored and decided to murder someone just for fun. They saw Lane running by, got in a car, drove behind him and shot him in the back. Two of the bored teenagers, Chancey Luna and James Edwards, have been charged with first degree murder:(Snip for photos)Their confederate Michael Jones is charged with being an accessory after the fact. Apparently Jones was driving the car, while Luna pulled the trigger on a .22
MSNBC host Chris Matthews went off on Tuesday about what he characterized as a variety of efforts by Republicans and conservatives to “delegitimize” President Barack Obama. Among the efforts he cited to prove this case are Republicans calling Obama “a liberal leader,” or simply “Obama,” instead of “The President of the United States.” Addressing Bush’s Brain author Wayne Slater, Matthews tore into what he saw as GOP efforts to ensure that the president’s legacy is a mixed one. “It seems there’s a very interesting compelling continuing effort to delegitimize this president,” Matthews insisted. “People on the right say he’s a disaster, which
Emboldened by an outpouring of support on social media, low-wage fast-food and retail workers from eight cities who have staged walkouts this year are calling for a national day of strikes Aug. 29. The workers — who are backed by local community groups and national unions and have held one-day walkouts in cities such as New York, St. Louis and Detroit — say they have received pledges of support from workers in dozens of cities across the country. The workers are calling for a wage of $15 an hour and the right to form a union. Organizers of the walkout say
Prosecutors on Tuesday charged two teenagers accused of gunning down an Australian student in Oklahoma for the “fun of it” with first-degree murder, and a third teen with being an accessory. Officials say 22-year-old Christopher Lane, who was visiting the U.S. on a baseball scholarship at East Central University, was jogging along a road in Duncan, Okla., after visiting his girlfriend on Friday when he was shot in the back, allegedly by the teens.
