Appearing on This Week With George Stephanopoulos, Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert battled not only the Democratic panelists but also conservative pundit George Will over the wisdom of shutting down the government to prevent Obamacare funding. Gohmert strongly condemned President Barack Obama’s argument at Friday’s news conference that the GOP’s “holy grail” was enying millions of people health insurance. “That’s a false narrative,” Gohmert said. “He says we’re trying to keep people from having health care. That’s just not true. That is an absolute, blatant lie. We’re not trying to keep anybody from getting health care.
Sorry, George Will is correct. Gohmert´s approach will be a disaster at the voting booth, no matter how the Republicans try to spin it. Yes, people don´t like Obamacare...so, Congress, fix it! Make it better! Don´t shut down the whole government over it.
And yes, the Dems will be saying that the Republicans want to deny people healthcare. Reality is that some people in this country do not have jobs which cover their health insurance, and they cannot purchase it for any amount they can afford through individual policies if they have per-existing conditions. When your health insurance quote is more than you earn in a month...and that happens for some folks...then they can´t purchase health insurance. It may not be common, but it happens. And you can bet the Dems will have such people on commercials to show what the "mean old Republicans" did. Don´t go there; roll your sleeves up and fix the bill.
I assume your advice to the Egyptians under Morsi would have been similar to McCain and Graham´s counsel? Better tread lightly about forcing the masses against their will - you are inviting a repeat of history.
I don´t think the bill can be fixed and we can never beat the Democrat lies and spin if we don´t fight. Will is comfy as a crochety outsider, yet still a DC insider. He doesn´t relate to outside the Beltway life. I admire Rep Gohmert´s courage and leadership. We may lose if we fight, we damn sure will lose if we don´t. We can´t keep letting the democrats slide. FIGHT.
Why don´t Republicans start saying: Democrats want to cause healthcare to cost everyone half their salary. Say it enough over and over..let them say it is not true but repeat it over and over. I actually think Dems do not care if half our salaries go to pay for Obamacare so why not accuse them of this. Republicans need to be proactive and aggressive rather than meek and defensive. Let us all just start accusing Dems of whatever we believe. I personally think Dems are trying to destroy the family unit. So why don´t I just start saying and writing this everywhere and deny it is false. We can all pay this game and get the Dems on the defensive. Oh..and why must Republicans always attack other Repubs? Oh unless they are moderates or liberals. The stupid party sure lives up to its name.
George Will was being absurd and ridiculous. The House has control of the US purse. They should use that control to defund the horrible democratic obamacare law.
Free clue, Will... The republicans will not shut down government. They can pass a fully funded budget that excludes all things referring to obamacare spending and let the democrats not pass a budget bill. If the Senate democrats do not pass the budget bill, the non-essential part of our federal government cannot operate. Tell me how that would be a bad thing.
I just punished myself for no reason at all by reading the comments after this Media-ite article. At a time when our Congress needs a whopping great kick in the pants for going along with so much damaging legislation, we don´t need the likes of old boy´ club George Will kicking some of our brightest and best in the teeth for daring to speak out for what they know is right. Our government and media stink to high heaven.
I sometimes like Louie Gohmert a lot and sometimes I wish he´d stop enjoying the spotlight quite so much with his controversial statements. We do not want to shut down the government. Nobody is advocating that. We cannot defund Obamacare all at once. We can, however, delay this, delay that, defund this, improve this, eliminate that until the whole thing collapses. The White House is terrified that not enough young, healthy people are going to volunteer to pay for expensive health insurance they don´t want or need. The WH is quite right to be anxious. It´s not going to happen. The exchanges, in October, won´t be sufficient, won´t be ready and won´t work. It´s too late to stop Obamacare in its entirety, but we can tinker and fix and throw out until we end up with something that won´t destroy the country.
Why do republican conservatives waste their time appearing on these leftist communist propaganda shows and who gives a damn what George Will has to say? Will is part of the ruling beltway elite class. Shut up George.
There´s been this debate going on regarding the relative place of the legislative authority and the executive authority since Oliver Cromwell and his Roundheads defeated King Charles and the Cavaliers.
Some continue to be upset about that outcome ~ George Will is such a person ~ A ROYALIST ~ a RIGHT WINGER.
Louie Gohmert, not exactly my favorite member of Congress, is actually on the side of God, Jesus, Mary, the Holy Ghost and the Prophets themselves in this regard ~ he ain´t no right winger Fur Shur.
The legislative authority should always hold the authority to severely counsel the executive, even if they have to drag him out of the palace and dispose of him.
BTW, that discovery was made earlier in Vehice. One Doge exceeded his authority. The Senate disposed of him in the prescribed manner. No subsequent Doge got out of line.
We are modern people though so it´s OK to cut off funds to stay the executive´s hand and prevent him from wasting the nation´s patrimony on tom foolery.
Here is my problem. I try my best to consider the opinion of moderate republicans. However, anytime an issue comes up, they consistently take some tapioca strategy. We have followed them until we elected Obama (twice!) and now they want to advise us on how to handle Obamacare? Tell me moderates, what has your team done to deserve any credibility against the onslaught of liberalism? Give me a radical lover of liberty rather than a gentlemanly loser.
If you want to charge ahead to slaughter join Louie. The Dems are licking their chops.
Shut the government down. When social security checks don´t go out, when the military doesn´t get paid, Obama goes on TV and announces that due to extraordinary circumstances he must raise the debt ceiling unilaterally. Republicans insist on hurting our seniors and our brave men and women in the military. I refuse to allow them to get away with it. This measure will fund the government for 30 days. In that time I hope Republicans will think of their fellow Americans first and not their own selfish interests.
A better strategy would be to put every thing into winning the Senate and forcing a showdown in 2015 when we have a stronger hand.
The GOP IS the stupid party. The first words out of any member of the party when discussing the defunding of Obamacare should be, "We are only defunding 1 small part of the government, Obamacare. If Obama and the Democrats choose to ignore or veto our continuing resolution and shut down the government, let it be on their heads, not ours."
Standing tall along side Rep Louie. George, shut your mouth until you know something about the subject. Shut down the government. Especially the checks to the Kommie Klown Klan member. He has access to too much of our money anyway. Destroy the obombacare bill and have an alternative...one WTP would want to see. Not the crap sandwich the kommie klan forced down our throats. That is something which will long be remembered. Just as amnesty will whould you pubbies to it do us again.
Maybe I´m wrong, but I don´t see Gohmert as someone particularly affected by the limelight.
I do think, however, that he has no business standing up there and taking this politically dangerous position without presenting at least a clue as to what HE would propose to address healthcare, and healthcare for everyone.
Thank you #16. Ever notice the short-sightedness of RINOs 1) We need a survival strategy and they only thoughts are always a political strategy 2) What country has ever rid itself of nationalized healthcare? Anyone? Bueller, Bueller? 3) Obama has martialed the forces of the IRS, NSA, EPA, FBI et al., against us and RINOs think we can somehow win another election? 4) What would it take for RINOs to decide it was time to lay down the gauntlet?
If the goal here was to provide every American with "affordable" medical insurance (no one ever defines what affordable means), then, given the cost of the program that´s been put into law, wouldn´t it have been orders of magnitude less expensive for the government simply to buy a medical insurance plan for every citizen or, perhaps, for those who could not afford one?
That no one ever goes back to review what was the intellectual underpinning of this adventure in public financing, perhaps the ultimate goal of the Affordable Care Act is not to provide medical insurance to those who can not afford it or prefer not to purchase it.
#16 I agree with you completely. They can have my VA benefits too. I just don´t see how we win this fight this year. Obama´s delayed a number of provisions. Others will fall away. 2015 isn´t too late. The GOP can use 2014 as a referendum on a free market alternative to Obamacare. Just my opinion but I think we´d be in a much stronger position to fight.
Yes, the PR battle of the party must be won. That is far more important than the future of the country. /s
As far as I´m concerned, if Obamacare is not defunded (delaying it only plays into the dems hands) then this country is down the tubes anyway. I would rather go down fighting, wouldn´t you? Well, no, obviously RINOs wouldn´t, because they care about the party first and foremost, just like most dems care more for their party than the country. Louie speaks for me. He speaks for his constituents, of which I am one, and he speaks for the good of the country. He´s hitting a little too close to the truth for dems and RINOs, so he must be ridiculed and destroyed. It´s what they (and I do include the appeasers on this site) do. I DO NOT CARE about the good of nor the future of the Republican party if they do not fight this fight. Delaying it will do more harm than good, and shutting down the government is all we have. So do it. Shut the sucker down and leave it down until Nov. 14, 2014, for all I care.
Perhaps I am wrong, but even shutting down the gov´t does NOT interfere with paying out soc. sec., military retirement, etc. Essential services continue. 2014 is too late to kill Obamacare. It will be too deeply entrenched. Fund all services but exclude funds to implement Obamacare. Do what´s right and ignore what democrats say. Quit playing politics with our healthcare.
I like Louis, I stand with Louis. He at least attempts to represent the people who elected them. At least two on the panel are Demonrat "talking points" only individuals, no brain power was used in their arguments.
George Will has lived and cocktailed in the Boomtown Beltway for years and sounds like a Demonrat much of the time, when he is not sounding like a scared Republican.
Steffy is just a snarky Leftist/Liberal/Progressive who does not care that his party leader is destroying the country. He is just so thrilled that a Demonrat is in power, that´s all that matters to him.
Sorry for second post. Stop calling Obamacare insurance. Obamacare actually makes insurance illegal. An insurance policy with a high deductible which covers Big things and lets you pay for little things is not allowed. Imagine what car insurance would cost if it covered oil changes and inspections. It wouldn´t be insurance, it would be Pooled Cost Sharing.
You´re so FOS #1. I work for a Furtune 500 company, and I pay more than $500 per month for health insurance. It is not covered. The supposed "less fortunate" get it for free. Obamacare is and will be a total disaster, and it needs to be stopped, even if it means massive cuts to the non-essential government programs.
FTA: “Even though we’re one-half of the legislating body from which no spending occurs unless we agree, that is a position that allows us to force others to adhere to the Constitution,” Gohmert replied. “We don’t have to wait for the Supreme Court. We can force that. And we can say, ‘You’re going to abide by the Constitution whether the Supreme Court gets it wrong or right.’ We have the ability to force respect for the law. And some of us think that we ought to force them to do that.”
#15 gives about the most untruthful description of "shutting down the government" one can imagine. So untruthful, in fact, I wonder if it´s coming from a democrat. If you can recall the last time the government was shut down, it involved no loss ot essential services such as military pay or social security checks and the like. It only involved non-essential services.
Pick and choose what to NOT fund If the government shuts down. 1. all congress critters --administration and executive branches NO PAY 2. No foreign aide dispensed 3. No payola to the UN That should keep the country running very well. Too bad so many posters prefer to fight RINOs than liberals.
George Will lost my respect in January 2009, when he hosted a dinner party for Obama and so-called conservative columnists just before the Inauguration. I can´t remember any Democrat columnist ever hosting a dinner for a Republican president-elect. What is the purpose? George Will, Peggy Noonan, and Colin Powell might as well have sold their souls to Satan, because they certainly are traitors and should be made to wear a scarlet "T" whenever they appear as panelists on any talk show.
Anybody who thinks we can collaborate with these Marxists and "win" later is crazy. Shut it down. Now. Their whole strategy is moving it along one stage at a time until it starts, no matter how bad it is at first. They know it can´t be stopped, ever, once it gets going. Stop it at all cost!
Sorry #38 you are incorrect. Social Security payments are mandatory, Social Security staffing is appropriated. There is a difference. It did have an effect in 95 and 96 and with Obama it will have more. It doesn´t matter what issue Obama chooses, he´ll raise the debt ceiling on his own.
George Will is willfully ignorant and a tool of the left.
Defund Obamacare...we stand with Louie...
If the government shuts down..it´s Obama´s choice and his fault...The people want Obamacare Gone...Obama cannot pick and choose who has to follow the law...making Obamacare UNCONSTITUTIONAL ...a senior lecturer at U of Chicago should know that..perhaps if Obama had become a Law Professor..he would know that.
Does anyone here actually know how many House GOPers are willing to vote to "shut down" the government over ObamaCare? Without a realistic idea of how many soldiers you´ve got, all this talk about shut downs and defunding is a tempest in a teapot.
In a legislative body where 40 to 50 Republicans may be ready to cave on immigration "reform", is it realistic to expect a united front on defunding ObamaCare?
The hard fact is that elections really do have consequences. American voters chose to empower the Democrats in 3 of the last 4 election cycles. Whether or not they knew what they were doing, to some extent they are going to reap what they´ve sown.
MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry evidently exists to say ridiculous things. The same radical who declared that all children belong to the state said Sunday that “Obamacare” is the new “n-word.” (Video) “Good morning, I’m Melissa Harris-Perry. I want to talk today about a controversial word,” the Tulane professor began Sunday’s show. “It’s a word that has been with us for years. And like it or not, it’s indelibly printed in the pages of American history. A word that was originally intended as a derogatory term, meant to shame, and divide, and demean. The word was conceived of by a group of
The world´s leading technology companies have united to demand sweeping changes to US surveillance laws, urging an international ban on bulk collection of data to help preserve the public´s “trust in the internet”. In their most concerted response yet to disclosures by the National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Yahoo, LinkedIn, Twitter and AOL have published an open letter to Barack Obama and Congress on Monday, throwing their weight behind radical reforms already proposed by Washington politicians. “The balance in many countries has tipped too far in favour of the state and away from the rights of
Rep. Steve Stockman, a conservative firebrand who has been dogged by ethical questions and campaign debt, withdrew as a candidate for re-election Monday and instead filed as a Republican challenger to U.S. Sen. John Cornyn. The filing gives Cornyn the Tea Party challenge in the Texas Republican primary that he long sought to avoid in a state where the GOP electorate has moved increasingly to the right. Stockman has prided himself on being one of the most conservative members of Congress. Soon after arriving, he refused to suport Rep. John Boehner for Speaker of the House, voting only “present.” He
Power Abuse: Emboldened by its shakedown of mortgage lenders, the administration is now accusing car lenders of racism. On what grounds? It refuses to say, raising suspicion of another witch hunt. Some of the nation´s largest auto lenders, including Ally Bank, are now under federal investigation for allegedly discriminating against black and Latino borrowers — a deplorable crime, if true. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is heading the new crusade with help from the Justice Department. It claims it has "statistical evidence" showing car lenders and dealers marking up loan prices for minorities vs. whites.
DETROIT- The U.S. government ended up losing $10.5 billion on the General Motors bailout, but it says the alternative would have been far worse. The Treasury Department sold its final shares of the Detroit auto giant on Monday, recovering $39 billion of the $49.5 billion it spent to save the dying automaker at the height of the financial crisis five years ago. Without the bailout, the country would have lost more than a million jobs, and the economy could have slipped from recession into a depression, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said on a conference call with reporters. Now, the American
LOS ANGELES— Eleanor Parker, who was nominated for Academy Awards three times for her portrayals of strong-willed women and played a scheming baroness in "The Sound of Music," has died at 91. Family friend Richard Gale said Parker died Monday morning due to complications from pneumonia. "She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children at a medical facility near her home in Palm Springs," Gale added. Parker was nominated for Oscars in 1950, 1951 and 1955, but then saw her career begin to wane in the early 1960s. Her last memorable role came in 1965´s "The Sound of Music," in which
“I think I just became the first president to ever publicly mention Area 51,” President Barack Obama joked at Sunday night’s Kennedy Center Honors event at The White House. The line got a big laugh from the audience in attendance, but he may have been telling the truth. This year’s honorees included Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock, and Billy Joel. But it was during his remarks about actress Shirley MacLaine, who wrote about her own UFO sightings in her memoir Sage-ing While Age-ing that the president brought up the top secret military base in southern Nevada. “Now, when you first become
WASHINGTON- For months, the talk was all about computer code. About response times. About glitches and bugs. People who didn´t know a URL from an http were blithely expounding on software snags and web design, thanks to the clunky launch of healthcare.gov, the insurance marketplace for the government´s big health care overhaul. With the website improving and tech chatter settling down, the conversation about the Affordable Care Act, or "Obamacare," is turning in other directions. (Snip) Or an agenda? The debate over President Barack Obama´s health care law has gradually morphed into a broader discussion about
George Zimmerman´s girlfriend is asking a Seminole County court to lift a no-contact provision against Zimmerman so the couple can "talk and be together," according to a court document obtained by CNN on Monday. Zimmerman was arrested on November 18 at his girlfriend Samantha Scheibe´s Apopka, Florida, home after the two had a heated fight. According to a police report about the incident, Scheibe said that after an argument, Zimmerman broke a table with a shotgun and then pointed it at her "for a minute." Zimmerman is charged with aggravated assault and misdemeanor counts of domestic violence
She wakes to the sound of breathing. The smaller children lie tangled beside her, their chests rising and falling under winter coats and wool blankets. A few feet away, their mother and father sleep near the mop bucket they use as a toilet. Two other children share a mattress by the rotting wall where the mice live, opposite the baby, whose crib is warmed by a hair dryer perched on a milk crate. Slipping out from her covers, the oldest girl sits at the window. On mornings like this, she can see all the way across Brooklyn to the Empire
On Sunday´s NBC Meet the Press, host David Gregory used the death of former South African President Nelson Mandela to lecture American politicians: "Mandela refused to be consumed by hatred and insisted on working toward a common purpose with his political foes. That, seems to me, is what is missing from this era of argument in Washington." [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump] However, Gregory portrayed President Obama as the victim of such polarization, rather than one of its instigators: "The election of our 44th president was similarly an example of how countries can overcome
All three networks on Monday morning highlighted the appearance of the Obamas at the Kennedy Center Honors, but only ABC fawned over "fashion win" of First Lady. Lara Spencer enthused that " one of the stars of the show was Michelle Obama." An excited Spencer explained that Mrs. Obama looked "absolutely ravishing in a flowing teal gown as she accompanied President Obama." The co-host declared, "Another big fashion win for the First Lady. CBS This Morning offered a full report on the various performers who were honored, but co-anchor Charlie Rose avoided ABC´s superlatives.
The question all week long was this: Who are you going to believe, an illegal alien or the president of the United States of America? Obviously, if it’s a president who once went by an alias, Barry Soetoro, you go with Uncle Omar, 100 percent, no questions asked. And so it was that the White House finally admitted to another, uh, misstatement — despite previous denials, Barack/Barry did sleep on his beloved Uncle Omar’s couch in Cambridge when he first moved here to attend Harvard Law School (speaking of which, we’re still waiting to see the president’s grades and his LSAT scores). But the
How do you get your arms around the catastrophe known as Obamacare? Is it even possible? At this point, I’m not sure it is. The list of individual disasters which threaten to ruin one-sixth of the U.S. economy and what has been, up until now, the best healthcare system in the world is exhaustive, and exhausting. The examples I will identify here barely scratch the surface. First but by no means foremost, we have the supposedly new and improved HealthCare.gov. Except it’s not, even the visible part. Stories still abound of people still failing to get in or to get through the enrollment
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers. Although they are statistically among the safest on the road, the number of older drivers is increasing dramatically — and with it, that group´s numbers of injuries and deaths. Since 2003, the population of older adults, defined as age 65 and older, has increased by 20% and the number of licensed older drivers increased by 21% to 35 million in 2012, according to NHTSA. Last year, NHTSA reported that 5,560 people older than 65 died and 214,000 were injured
A veteran Washington adviser who has worked for four Presidents on both sides of the political aisle said that the stunning Government Accountability Report report that found President Barack Obama has not had a one-on-one meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius since the passage of Obamacare over three years ago is an indictment of the entire White House operation and shows that the Obama administration has bordered on "malfeasance." "I have no doubt the White House is right, that Secretary Sebelius was in several group meetings with the president about health care," Gergen caveated, "but the whole
President Barack Obama’s Facebook page on Saturday posted a message honoring the dead from Pearl Harbor—accompanied by a picture of Obama descending the stairs next to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The picture barely fits the name of the Arizona Memorial so it can frame Obama in the foreground. The post´s statement reads: Today, with solemn pride and reverence, let us remember those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor, acknowledge everyone who carried their legacy forward, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideals for which they served. President Obama The Obama Administration´s current shipbuilding plan shrinks the size of
Barack Obama did not tell the whole story this autumn when he tried to make the case that Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical weapons attack near Damascus on 21 August. In some instances, he omitted important intelligence, and in others he presented assumptions as facts. Most significant, he failed to acknowledge something known to the US intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the country’s civil war with access to sarin, the nerve agent that a UN study concluded – without assessing responsibility – had been used in the rocket attack. In the months before the attack,
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the hapless, goalpost-shifting so-called "architect" of Obamacare, told Fox News´ Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that President Barack Obama´s promise "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was absolutely true--with one important caveat: if you like your doctor, "you can pay for it." Wallace grilled Dr. Emanuel, challenging his false claims that California´s enrollment was keeping pace with the percentage of the young population necessary to keep the system afloat, and pointing out that the president´s promise on doctors would collapse once people lost their insurance or their
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I
The U.S. isn´t called "America the Beautiful" for nothing. Each year, millions of tourists come from home and abroad to see the country´s majestic landscape and iconic sites, from the Grand Canyon to the Statue of Liberty. But there are also cool, quirky attractions, like Vermont´s Ben & Jerry´s Factory and Tennessee´s Graceland, the former home of Rock and Roll King Elvis Presley. From California to New York and everywhere in between, the country is chock-full of incredible attractions that keep luring in visitors. Here are the best tourist attractions in every state.
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry opened her program over the weekend with a commentary about the Affordable Care Act’s colloquial moniker: “Obamacare.” She said that the word was originally created as a “derogatory term,” designed by white men as a way to delegitimize President Barack Obama and his achievement. However, she said that the term will soon be synonymous with all of Obama’s accomplishments and she urged her audience to use the term with pride. “I want to talk today about a controversial word. It’s a word that has been with us for years, and like it or not, it’s indelibly
Call me Grinch, call me Scrooge. Call me Lord Voldemort of the Yuletide. None could be worse than sending me a holiday card with glossy photographs of your lovely, smiling family. My wife, Emily, and I place your cards like trophies on our shelves, continuing an old-school practice that began about 175 years ago as a way of maintaining relationships as families and friends moved far and wide. Today’s cards may appear more personalized — with photos of spouses, kids and pets, and distribution lists much smaller than a sprawling collection of Facebook friends. But when I flip over the photo
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a last minute decision not to participate in a memorial service for the late South African President Nelson Mandela, despite having notified the South African government that he would attend the event. The decision was made in light of the high transportation costs resulting from the short notice of the trip and the security required for the prime minister in Johannesburg. The Prime Minister’s Office found that the trip would have cost roughly 7 million shekels ($2.4 million) – 2.8 million shekels for chartering a private El Al plane and a further 3.2 million shekels for
