Big cuts due for federal food aid
Philadelphia Inquirer [PA], by Alfred Lubrano

Life may get harsher and hungrier for nearly three million people in Pennsylvania and New Jersey on Nov. 1, when food-stamp benefits will be cut overnight for the first time in U.S. history. It will mean 21 lost meals per month for a family of four - devastating arithmetic for families already living either on the edge or within the abyss of poverty, according to experts on food stamps, now called SNAP for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Why now? The federal stimulus of 2009 had temporarily boosted SNAP benefits to combat the recession. But the increase ends on Halloween,

I have no sympathy for them. We need to cut food stamp aid for millions of people across the US.

Entitlement programs - the opiate of the masses.
Hunger can be a great motivator to change one´s life.
So stop stealing from your fellow Americans and start working for a living.

Or is that beneath your dignity?

Looks like those facing cuts will be forced to go to local free food banks then. Bummer having to walk there, take a bus, ride a bike or get a ride form a friend. Of course as a last resort they could get a job at McDonalds, Taco Bell, Burger King, or Pizza Hut.

The liberal Inquirer must have spent months finding a few people who genuinely need food stamps to buy actual food. Fraud in the welfare programs is so rampant that the truly needy are at the mercy of the thieves, the outright lazy and especially the gamblers.

There´s plenty of money in this fund, even after cuts if Americans only qualified for them.Unemployment has had something to do with the spike but it´s illegals who are really depleting the system.

This is just another issue for Obama to corner republicans on and he will.

There´s so much money in the system, these people can afford to ship food overseas in profit making care packages.US Aid is supposed to help starving people overseas but most of that money winds up in bureaucrat and crooks pockets.

I guess I´m confused. If they have children in the public school system, aren´t they already fed a couple of meals a day? Don´t a lot of school districts send backpacks full of food home on the weekends as well? In the summer, they run free breakfast and lunch for children too. What am I missing?

Don´t believe it. It´s a head feint. Even if some welfare benefits archived in certain places you can be certain new ones will spring up in other places, Probably for some imaginary underprivileged group such as one-eyed gay Druids or something. These programs are never cut.

Let´s just say for the sake of argument that some welfare is cut. You can be sure Democrats will blame it on those heartless Republicans.

I´m not buying that these cuts will ever happen.

I followed a woman in the grocery store just yesterday using a government issued Link Card. She didn´t know one word of English, she didn´t know the numbers of her password, but, she did have the best cuts of meats and the high end can goods and sweets.

I thought that to become a citizen one was required to learn some English. If she wasn´t a citizen, why are we giving her piles of free food???

Even if their food budget is cut, a lot of these folks do no shop wisely. There isn´t a lot of real food in their shopping cart. I see bags of chips, premade sausage biscuits, individual jello packs etc. if they bought the less expensive items, like bags of rice and beans, chicken for soup etc, their food dollar would go farther.

Business have been cutting jobs for several years now, businesses are now dropping to below 50 employees or cutting to below 30 hours because of Obamacare. When Obamacare kicks in in 2014 more jobs will be lost.

So will you self important geniuses explain where are the jobs for these people to get?

Before you tell people to get a job, why not start a business and hire a few of them?

We still have record unemployment and will face even more of it for an indefinite period when the Democrats push through their Amnesty Plan ~

One of the reasons to stop Amnesty is to help the poor gain employment ~ you gotta´ give up your hispanic lawn boys and maids BTW. Tell them to go home.

At the same time we just went through one of our worst droughts that drove up the price of food all over the world ~ this year the drought is over except in the West, and food prices are down. No reason food stamp costs can´t be cut this year.

You might have missed it but Obama and his crowd are not screaming mad over the division of the agricultural bill into a price supports bill and a food stamp bill. They know the pressure to increase coverage levels is way down so there´s not much political gain in kvetching about it.

"on the edge or within the abyss of poverty"

poverty isn´t what it use to be!

means reported gross income (assuming no fraud) of up to $36,876 for a "family of four"

lets see what other benefits this "family of four" would enjoy...

earned income tax credit: "$5,372 with two qualifying children"

Obamaphone (if you qualify for SNAP, your good!)

The National School Lunch Program: reduced cost or free school lunches.

Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (your eligible if your on SNAP!) - reduced energy cost

Federal Public Housing Assistance (subsidized rent.)

and mush more.

so your family of four will have a base income of up to $42,000 plus free cell phone, free or reduced cost shelter, food, health care, energy, and more.

this may explain why I saw a patron at WalMart trying to buy beer with their oregon trail card (food assistance). She was middle aged, smartly dressed, makeup, and a "designer" handbag. Slightly obese. She didn´t look like someone "on the edge or within the abyss of poverty"

For those that don´t actually need food assistance in the first place, it won´t matter, but for the elderly and unemployed, it will hurt. It will get worse as more become not even part time, but temporary employees. Many of whom don´t have a spouse to pick up the slack.
