A $147 Million Signal of
Faith in Atlanta’s Public Schools

New York Times, by Kim Severson

ATLANTA — The most expensive public high school ever built in Georgia opens Wednesday in an old I.B.M. office building. With 11 stories, a 900-car parking deck and views fit for a corporate executive, the school, North Atlanta High, looks very much like the fancy office buildings and glittery shopping strips that populate its Buckhead community. The school cost about $147 million. That is small change compared with the Robert F. Kennedy high school complex in Los Angeles, built in 2010 for $578 million — a figure critics liked to point out was more expensive than

I´d like to see some proof that a better building leads to a better education.Just like busing never worked, neither will a new building. There´s countless millions of kids around the world that really do have shabby buildings and worn out text books but still learn because it´s part of the culture to get educated any way you can. Some of these schools don´t even have heat, let alone air conditioning.
They close schools here if the A/C goes out.

Thirteen-year-old Ethan Chaplin, who attends school in Vernon, New Jersey, was suspended for two days and will undergo a psychological evaluation after another student complained that he was "twirling a pencil" like a gun. According to News 12 New Jersey, Chaplin said he was "just twisting around a pencil with a pen cap on it when a student behind him yelled, ´He´s making gun motions, send him to juvie.´" Chaplin told officials he had repeatedly been bullied by the student who complained and that the complaint about the pencil was just an extension of that. But the school suspended him

IRS agents’ testimony: NO progressive

IRS agents testified before Congress that the agency’s political targeting did not apply to progressive groups as Democrats and the media have claimed, according to a bombshell new staff report prepared by the House Oversight Committee chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa. IRS agents testified before Oversight that ACORN groups were scrutinized because the agency thought they were old organizations applying as new ones. Emerge America was scrutinized for potential “improper private benefit.” No evidence exists that the IRS requested additional information from any Occupy Wall Street group. “Only seven applications in the IRS backlog contained the word ‘progressive,’ all of which

Just about everyone thinking about running for president is kicking it into gear now, slowpokes included. For months, many prospective 2016 presidential candidates have been rubbing shoulders with donors, networking with party leaders, getting on TV and otherwise auditioning for the contest ahead, especially on the Republican side. Their pace is picking up. A few are even admitting now what has been obvious for eons: They´re interested in the presidency, even if they aren´t ready to commit. Others have avoided the usual pathways, for reasons that make sense to them even if their inscrutability exasperates others. "This is the time

Michelle Obama’s campaign against obesity, and for healthy eating is a noble one. However, America’s public school students would beg to differ. In March of this year, the General Accounting Office (GAO) reported that 1.6 million students across America have dropped out school lunch programs since the Michelle Obama-approved Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act required schools to dramatically change what they can eat at lunch. Now, students are posting images of the “healthy, hunger-free” lunches on Twitter and Instagram. Let’s assume they passed on carrot sticks, salad and steamed vegetables as they made their choices. Here’s an image and message from

@JoeBiden is back. The vice president revived his political Twitter account Monday with an upbeat message about this year´s midterm election cycle, marking the first tweet from the account in 437 days. "Dusting off the Twitter handle for a big midterm election year. Let´s get to it, folks!" Biden tweeted. Biden has maintained a robust presence on the social media site through his vice presidential account, @VP, but his return to his non-government Twitter handle signals a strategy by Biden and the Democratic National Committee to increase his political profile during the next few months. “@JoeBiden will be another way for the

America’s biggest state is now getting its own Breitbart page. Or is it its second, counting Big Hollywood? Or its third, given Big Government’s content? If California is to make its way back to more liberty and less government--and America needs her to find her way back--then a Breitbart site dedicated to this proposition is a requisite. As part of this inaugural effort, I was asked to pen a California refugee’s perspective. Our family moved to Texas in December 2011. Moving 1,300 miles wasn’t a lightly-taken decision. A major new Gallup survey suggests the ObamaCare sign-up numbers are not as soaring as the White House claims. The massive survey, released on Monday, shows the number of uninsured has indeed fallen to its lowest level in years, likely thanks to the Affordable Care Act. The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index measured the share of adults without health insurance. That shrank from 17.1 percent at the end of last year to 15.6 percent for the first three months of 2014. The decline of 1.5 percentage points would translate roughly to more than 3.5 million people gaining coverage. But the numbers, released a

Last week´s encounter between former acting CIA Director Michael Morell and the House Permanent Subcommittee on Intelligence may have brought us a bit closer to the truth of how four Americans came to be killed at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012, and how their countrymen came to be lied to about it. But the progress toward truth was probably not made in a way that Mr. Morell intended. The encounter on Capitol Hill also made clear that the forum that will take us all the way to the truth must be something other than a

Putin is estimated to have amassed a fortune worth at least an estimated $28 billion through kickbacks from projects like construction at the Sochi Winter Olympic games, holdings in Russian real estate and energy conglomerates, and kickbacks from deals with associates going back to the late 1990s. Corruption by Putin and his inner circle is said to be pervasive and a normal part of business under his

That headline, with the power to inflame the Republican base against the House GOP, prompted Boehner to reach out and correct the record. He said that he and his colleagues did not expand the law, but actually repealed a portion of it. Boehner said that he and his colleagues fulfilled a promise this weekend to ‘chip away another piece” of the ACA. An aide for Boehner said that this latest move is just “one part

There is a pastime among liberal pundits — the latest is Nicholas Kristof — to quote a new center left global ranking (with unbiased titles such as “The Social Progress Imperative”) and then to decry that the United States is behind its major industrial competitors in things like “Internet Access” and “Ecosystem sustainability.” The subtext of these rants is that an illiberal, reactionary U.S. does not spend enough on government entitlements to promote parity, equality and social justice among its citizenry. These pessimistic rankings increase the angst about the American condition when viewed from scowling perches in Washington or New

Kathryn Riffenburg decided on a closed casket for her baby´s funeral. She didn´t want her family to see what whooping cough, her son´s first illness, had done to 9-week-old Brady Alcaide. The nearly forgotten disease, which has in recent years afflicted thousands of Americans, left Brady´s tiny body swollen and unrecognizable. So his mother dressed him in a white baptismal suit and hat and tucked him into a tiny white casket. In Dearborn, Mich., home to over 40,000 Americans of Arab descent, some Muslim parents have complained about flyers handed out at public schools advertising an Easter egg hunt at a local Presbyterian church. The Muslim parents assert that the flyers – emblazoned with the word “Eggstravaganza!” – violate the separation of church and state widely ascribed to the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause, reports the Detroit Free Press. Students at three Dearborn elementary schools received the flyers. A large number of Muslim students attend the schools. The “Eggstravaganza!” is scheduled to take place on April 12 event at Cherry Hill Presbyterian Church

Democrats are facing a senior problem that could get even worse this year. The party has traditionally had trouble with older voters, losing the group aged 65 and over by 21 points in 2010 — when Republicans picked up 63 seats — and by 12 points in the 2012 presidential race. Seniors are the GOP’s most reliable voting bloc in midterm years, turning out in higher numbers than Democratic base voters. A recent Gallup poll showed seniors have become even more Republican over the last two decades; in 2013, 48 percent considered themselves Republican. That spells trouble for Democrats, who are already facing

Big challenges are lurking for the next enrollment season, which starts Nov. 15. Chief among them are keeping premiums and other consumer costs in check, and overhauling an enrollment process that was advertised as customer-friendly but turned out to be an ordeal. The president gave two speeches this week, one in the Rose Garden to talk about Obamacare and one in Ann Arbor, Mich., to push minimum wage increases. What did we learn? We learned that President Obama is most comfortable in campaign mode, and his campaigning has gotten downright ugly. His Rose Garden speech was a typical self-congratulatory moment for supposedly hitting 7.1 million Obamacare sign-ups — although we know that once again, the White House is ignoring some inconvenient truths. We also learned that the president was vain enough to asked the networks to cover his speech in prime time, but
