In a May 30, 2013, letter to CIA officers on the ground last fall in Benghazi, Libya, CIA director John Brennan notifies survivors of those attacks that congressional oversight committees remain interested in hearing from them. HPSCI (House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence) and SSCI (Senate Select Committee on Intelligence), Brennan wrote, “have asked that CIA leadership reach out to officers who were in Benghazi during the attacks to let them know of the committees’ interest in hearing first-hand account. While the committees have asked that we make those in Benghazi during the attacks aware of their interest in

It´s very simple.

In this case, the congressional committees, not CIA management, are the "proper channels" provided by the Constitution. It´s called oversight by a co-equal branch. Remember your oath?

Few presidents understand the power of speech better than Barack Obama, and even fewer the power of denying it to others. That´s the context for understanding the White House´s unprecedented co-option of the Internal Revenue Service to implement a political campaign to shut up its critics and its opponents. Perhaps the biggest fiction of this past year was that the IRS´s targeting of conservative groups has been confronted, addressed and fixed. The opposite is true. The White House has used the scandal as an excuse to expand and formalize the abuse. About a month after the IRS inspector general released his bombshell

Fiscal Policy: President Obama is putting all his political chips on raising the minimum wage to 10.10 an hour, but so far that issue isn´t gaining much political traction. The 500,000 job losses confirmed last week by the Congressional Budget Office certainly were a mortal wound to the legislative push — as well they should be when we have nearly 20 million Americans already unemployed or underemployed. But most Americans have a much bigger concern than raising the minimum wage. Only about 5% of workers make that little (the average is well above $20 an hour), and most receiving the minimum stay

Russia: America´s old Cold War adversary is acting more and more like it used to, exerting power from Crimea to Havana to Singapore. Think it might be related to the shrinking of our conventional forces? It might sound crazy today, but historians (writing in Russian or Mandarin, of course) could look back one day at the killing of Osama bin Laden and see it as the beginning of the demise of America as a superpower. As Center for Political-Military Analysis director and Hudson Institute senior fellow Richard Weitz noted some months after the bin Laden operation, rather than "overwhelming force missions, the

Hillary Clinton has praised the governor of Arizona after she vetoed a bill that would have let businesses refuse to serve gays and lesbians on grounds of religion. This week, Russia has begun urgent military exercises and the Crimean parliament building, in eastern Ukraine, has been seized by pro-Russian demonstrators. Yet Russia may be extremely wary of direct intervention in Ukraine — just a few years ago, it did not hesitate to aid the separation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia from Georgia, but the risk of intervention in Ukraine is immeasurably greater. How? It could destabilize the situation in Russia itself. Although some observers draw a distinction between Vladimir Putin and Victor Yanukovych, the two men are actually quite similar: Both have used the resources of the state to

As was expected, Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona last night vetoed SB 1062, which would have clarified guarantees of religious-freedom rights for citizens. Contrary to its detractors’ disinformation campaign, the bill was quite simple and limited in scope. (It was only two pages; Congress would do well to emulate its brevity if nothing else.) What SB 1062 did was to amend Arizona’s Religious Freedom and Restoration Act (RFRA), a law that has been on the books in Arizona for 15 years and was modeled after the federal law of the same name signed by Bill Clinton in 1993. SB 1062 simply extended
