Think you know your cat? Think
again: New video demystifies
feline body language - and
reveals they probably DON´T
want their tummy stroked

Daily Mail [UK], by Sarah Griffiths

Original Article

Every cat owner likes to think they share a special bond with their feline friend, but experts believe that many people might be missing the chance to communicate effectively. Britain´s leading cat charity has produced a video guide to cat behaviour after a study found many owners struggle to understand their pet. The Cats Protection video dispels popular myths such as cats licking their lips when they are hungry or wanting their tummies scratched when they roll over. Animal lovers are often at a loss to explain why their cat extends its tail upwards or rubs against them.

Comments:
Stray or feral cats often do not show the friendly part of their body language, and there´s a good reason for that: survival. One of our formerly feral cats is now 18 and it´s taken over 10 years to persuade her to show her tummy to us or allow us to pick her up. (There´s a reason she was called Rambo and is now Bambi.) Nowadays she doesn´t mind having her tummy stroked (just a little) but you can see she´s gritting her teeth to cut off her natural instinct to bite.

Maybe the Daily Mail has been watching Jackson Galaxy´s "My Cat from Hell", a surprisingly insightful education in cat behavior.

Our latest buddy must, repeat must, start his day by rubbing against my hair for several minutes. A great way to start a day.

And maybe cats don´t show the advanced facial expressions of dogs but cats´ eyes tell a million stories.

The article is right on about my cat. She doesn´t care for hugs or being picked up but she´ll stand there all day as long as you scratch her head, ears and under her chin. She even likes a neck massage. She´ll sit there with eyes closed and purr as long as I keep going.

Yes, when I come home she´s standing at the door as I come in so I speak to her as I bend down and scratch her head a little then she goes back to her bed.

Only message I haven´t figured out yet is the stare as if I did something wrong. She´ll sit right beside me and just stare wide eyed at me. I have no clue what it means.

Being married for 44 years and having dogs as pets for most of them, 5 years with two cats has me convinced that dogs are men´s pets--cats are women´s. From there it is fun to speculate as to why, other than to blame senility.

Observation: A cat showing it´s belly (sometimes rolling), is a gesture used when it wants to show friendly intentions. It can be used when the cat does Not want physical contact. I have had cats use it in lieu of contact.

Slow blinking can be initiated by people, even with feral cats. It´s more of a truce, than trust.

We have a cat that will stare for hours at a place on the wall. Next day a different place. Sometimes the corner of a framed picture. I believe she is working out a theory about shadows. She has already used her body language to indicate she discounts wave particle duality.

as far as dogs being men´s pets, and cats being women´s - for one thing, dogs will take a dump or pee whenever and wherever they feel like it. Cats are amazingly private and clean about the whole affair.

I have had cats since I was a teen, and the behavior that just weirds me out is when they will stare into an empty room or down the hall like they are hearing something. Especially after watching a late night movie with most of the lights in the house off.

My favorite morning behavior is what I call ´running with the wildebeasts´. There is no set time, they just start running from one end of the house to the other. This lasts for a good 10 minutes or so, every morning.

Hmmm, #8, I dunno about that. I bought a cute little book for my sister titled I Could Pee on This - and other poems by cats by Francesco Marciuliano, for very good reason.

This from the cover flap: All cats are artists, as demonstrated by their abstract hairballs, expertly stripped curtains, and the precise way they arrange themselves on top of your pile of freshly cleaned clothes.

The title poem:

I Could Pee On This

Her new sweater doesn´t smell of me
I could pee on that
She´s gone out for the day and
left her laptop on the counter
I could pee on that
Her new boyfriend just pushed
my head away
I could pee on him
She´s ignoring me ignoring her
I could pee everywhere
She´s making up for it
by putting me on her lap
I could pee on this
I could pee on this

I´m not convinced cats are clean animals just because they groom themselves. But, I like them as long as they belong to someone else.

Mr Lavrov told Russia Today it was "quite telling" that Kiev had re-launched its anti-terror operation against pro-Russian gunmen during a visit by US Vice-President Joe Biden. Kiev and the West say Moscow commands the gunmen - claims denied by Russia. In the past month, pro-Russian militants have overrun several cities in the eastern Donetsk region. They have occupied public buildings and installed their own officials, in similar tactics to those used to take over the Ukrainian region of Crimea earlier in the year. The US had earlier demanded that Moscow must publicly call for pro-Russian gunmen to lay down their weapons and

While America’s wealthiest citizens continue to outpace their global peers, the country’s middle class has lost its long held distinction of being the most affluent in the world according to new research. Although economic growth in the United States continues to be as strong as in many other countries--or stronger--only a small percentage of American households are fully benefiting from it, according to the LIS analysis. Based on surveys conducted over the past 35 years, income across the lower--and middle-income tiers of American society has plateaued over that time, while citizens in other advanced countries have received considerably larger rises.

At least 1,000 hospital patients are dying needlessly each month from dehydration and poor care by doctors and nurses, according to an NHS study. The deaths from acute kidney injury could be prevented by simple steps such as nurses ensuring patients have enough to drink and doctors reviewing their medication, the researchers say. Between 15,000 and 40,000 patients die annually because hospital staff fail to diagnose the treatable kidney problem, a figure that dwarfs the death toll from superbugs like MRSA.
