U.S. Outlines N.S.A.’s Culling of
Data for All Domestic Calls

New York Times, by Charlie Savage

Original Article

Posted By:Emerson, 7/31/2013 12:03:04 PM

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Wednesday released formerly classified documents outlining a once-secret program of the National Security Agency that is collecting records of all domestic phone calls in the United States, as top officials testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee. As the hearing began, The Guardian newspaper published another document from the archives of Top Secret surveillance matters leaked to it by the former N.S.A. contractor Edward J. Snowden. It was a 32-page presentation describing the N.S.A.´s XKeyscore program, by which N.S.A. analysts can mine vast databases of phone and Internet information the agency has vacuumed up.

Detailed articles like this one and the Guardian (Glenn Greenwald latest) article linked are best read now. They will be referred to in print and on TV. Easier to get up to speed now than to have to go and find them later - or remain in the dark about the extent to which O&Co are going to invade our privacy.

It said the government may access the logs only when an executive branch official determines that there are “facts giving rise to a reasonable, articulable suspicion” that the number searched is associated with terrorism.

Going to a FISA Court is so much trouble.
An Exec Branch Official is good enough.

#3 ~ the fact that the communications common carriers CREATE the meta data is being ignored in this debate.

They really don´t need to do it but State governments and the FEC require them to do that. I think the FTC also gets in on the act.

NO ONE can possibly believe the Chicoms, Russians, Germans, French, Brits, Japanese ~ etc are NOT also interested in that meta data or that they haven´t bothered to develop the technology and ´connectivity´ to obtain it.

I am very leery of the real identity of those who want to cut NSA out of the loop, but who seem to be otherwise totally disinterested in the others (Chicoms, etc.)

As everyone recalls, just before Snowden started his gran trek the Chicoms were supposed to meet with Obamugabe and his evil minions regarding inappropriate hacking (that would include trying to acquire phone company meta data)........ so Snowden shows up and almost like they´d been choreographed the Snowden supporters ALSO showed up.

There was no more discussion of Chicom hacking of our communication systems.

I don´t believe the NSA critics come to the table with clean hands.

A few days ago, a pop-up apparently from microsoft appeared on my computer. It contained a screenshot of paragraphs that I believe I posted on this site. microsoft requested that I submit the paragraphs as part of their effort to improve the editing function in ms word. I did not.

Has anyone received a similar message from microsoft?

U.S. childhood obesity rates have increased over the past 14 years, according to a study published on Monday, casting doubt on a recent analysis by government health researchers that found a sharp drop in preschool obesity rates over the past decade. The good news, announced in February by researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), received widespread media coverage and prompted first lady Michelle Obama to say she was "thrilled at the progress we´ve made over the last few years in obesity rates among our youngest Americans. Most religious movies feel as if they’re made by a church committee, but every now and then a wild-eyed prophet wanders in and rattles the theater with brimstone. Regardless of your feelings about either movie, Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” qualifies and so does Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Temptation of Christ.” Now director Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan,” “The Wrestler”) has ascended to the mountaintop and returned with the strangest, most visionary cinematic parable yet. “Noah” is equal parts ridiculous and magnificent, a showman’s folly and a madman’s epic. It elaborates on the Book of Genesis’s slender story of Noah

Mexico City — Just before 7 a.m. on Saturday, dozens of soldiers and police officers descended on a condominium tower in Mazatlán, Mexico, a beach resort known as much as a hangout for drug traffickers as for its seafood and surf. The forces were following yet another tip about the whereabouts of one of the world’s most wanted drug kingpins, Joaquín Guzmán Loera — known as El Chapo, which means “Shorty” — who had eluded such raids for 13 years since escaping from prison, by many accounts in a laundry cart. Much of Sochi is a work in progress, and parts of it look at least a dozen all-nighters away from completion. There are unfinished hotels, half-finished stores and a mall where the only shop that is open and thriving is a Cinnabon. Wander the premises over the course of a day

The notorious party palace also contained four or five empty codeine bottles along with empty Fanta bottles, TMZ said. The Fanta bottles appeared to be discolored by the codeine, a sign they were used to mix the narcotic drink Sizzurp, also called “lean.” Luckily for the Biebs, the deputies were raiding the house for surveillance

Following the massacre of grammar-school children in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, high-powered weapons have been used to kill innocent victims in more senseless public incidents. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators. Because you can find anything on the Web, you can easily search and pull up a running clock that tells you just how long, to the second, Barack Obama has been president. It moves in real time. It only feels like it´s speeding up. Constrained by crises over which he has little power to impact events, hemmed in by a divided Congress more interested in scoring points with voters than in legislating, and watching as his potential successor assumes more and more of the political spotlight, Obama may be receding into history more quickly than either he or his aides ever anticipated.
