5,000 guns from buyback events
melted into rebar, officials say

Los Angeles Times, by Kate Mather

Original Article

Posted By:JoniTx, 7/30/2013 4:44:42 PM

More than 5,000 weapons collected in various buyback programs were melted down into steel rebar Tuesday morning, authorities said. Officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff´s Department and the Santa Monica, Inglewood and Culver City police departments oversaw the 20th annual "gun melt" at Gerdau Steel Mill in Rancho Cucamonga, the sheriff´s department announced. The mill annually donates its furnace and workers for the event, the department said. The sheriff´s department´s buyback program -- which offers grocery store gift cards in exchange for weapons -- began in Compton in 2005. Now several municipalities offer such events throughout the year.

Anyone who does not understand that this is a colossal waste of taxpayer money for no discernible improvement is an idiot, which most modern Democrats seem to be. But you can believe they are all out there congratulating themselves that perhaps a life might have been saved, even though that premise is unprovable.

Like everything else Obama touches, an item that might sell for $500 to $1,500 each is bought by the taxpayer for $100 each and then reduced to something that sells for $5.00 each in equivalent pounds of steel.

Lives lost by misguided people giving up their means of self-defense? We´ll never know.

The politics of Obamacare delays

By now, the pattern is pretty clear: Obamacare deadlines don’t stick. And they probably never will. The unanswered question is, does the extra time create more hassles than benefits for those affected - and is the goalpost-moving worth the political headaches it creates for the Obama administration? Because undeniably, every time the Obama administration bends a deadline for the Affordable Care Act — delaying the employer mandate for the second time, putting off parts of the enrollment launch, or giving customers just a little more time to sign up — it fuels the perception that the administration is just winging it,

WASHINGTON – The White House is defending its decision to bar reporters and photojournalists from a meeting between President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama. White House spokesman Jay Carney says he acknowledges the news media´s legitimate interest in covering the encounter. But he says the decision was consistent with past meetings Obama has held with the Buddhist monk. Obama´s meeting with the Dalai Lama drew harsh criticism from China even before it took place. The White House appeared to be trying to keep it low-key to avoid further aggravating Beijing.

For the last several days, I have been accumulating information about the extraordinary plan, launched by the Democratic majority of the Federal Communications Commission, apparently without input or even knowledge on the part of the Commission’s Republicans, to survey radio and television stations, as well as newspapers (over which the FCC has no jurisdiction) with respect to their editorial news judgments. Many observers saw the FCC’s project as the prelude to an effort to push news reporting even farther to the left. See Mark Steyn, Byron York and Tammy Bruce, for a few among many such examples. But whether it be a single unpitted olive, lobster tail and steak or two pints of mint and chocolate chip ice cream, their choice of last meal could also be said to offer a glimpse into each of these prisoners´ personalities. Utah and Colorado lawmakers both voted favorably on proposals Thursday to treat tobacco like alcohol and take it away from 18- to 20-year-olds, a move inspired by new research on how many smokers start the habit as teenagers. FRESNO, Calif.- Federal officials say many farmers caught in California´s drought will receive no irrigation water this year from a vast system of rivers, canals and reservoirs interlacing the state. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation announced Friday it will continue to monitor rain and snowfall, but at this point there´s not enough water in the Central Valley Project to give water to farmers. Last year, Central Valley farmers received 20 percent of their normal allowance, and that figure is now set at zero percent. This marks the third dry year for the state, and Gov. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, may be the brightest light to adorn the Republican Party in many years. He knows how to make the case for conservative ideas, pointing, for example, to the contrasting fates of Detroit and Houston to illustrate the superiority of conservative policies. So it´s particularly galling to see that rather than train his fire at President Barack Obama and the liberal machine that cocoons him, Cruz has become a one-man wrecking ball against Republicans. His most recent foray into sabotaging his colleagues concerned the debt limit increase. Because Speaker John Boehner sent over a "clean" debt limit bill,
