A United Airlines employee and his wife face grand theft and burglary, accused of stealing luggage of passengers whose flight was diverted away from San Francisco International Airport because of the Asiana Airlines crash, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. (Snip) The Chronicle says surveillance video captured United customer service representative Sean Crudup, 44, handing the bags to his wife, Raychas Thomas, 32, and another woman. The bags contained, among other things, valuable clothing that Thomas returned to a local Nordstrom store for about $5,000 Guidotti told the paper. The couple were arrested as Thomas tried to catch a flight

I recently lost over 5K of dive equipment on my carry on bag that some how made it through customs in Miami, but never made it to my final destination. Luckily I have all the receipts the airline only wanted to give me $500 for the missing bag. And yet this is a pervasive problem that the airlines and the airports refuse to take care of.

#1 after my movie camera disappeared from my carry-on I researched theft impediments for my next flight. I´m going to run a locking cable through all my valuables and a part of the carry-on and lock and tie-wrap the zippers. It will make the thief work harder to steal my stuff while I´m being poked by TSA, and at least I´ll know as soon as I see the bag.

Russia sets tough conditions

Russia set out a series of tough conditions on Sunday night for agreeing a diplomatic solution to the crisis over its annexation of Crimea, demanding that the US and its European partners accept its proposal that ethnic Russian regions of eastern and southern Ukraine be given extensive autonomous powers independent of Kiev. Emergency talks between Sergei Lavrov, Russia´s foreign minister, and John Kerry, the US secretary of state, got under way at the Russian ambassador´s residence in Paris after a day in which tensions over Ukraine deepened appreciably. Neither man made any substantive comment before the talks began. Suggesting it

The Sultan of Brunei, one of the world’s wealthiest rulers and a close ally of Britain, will this week oversee his country’s transition to a system of Islamic law with punishments that include flogging, the dismemberment of limbs and stoning to death. The 67-year-old absolute monarch declared last year that he wanted to introduce a full sharia system in his oil-rich nation and warned critics who took to social media sites to complain that they could be prosecuted using the new laws. The decision to introduce sharia and reintroduce the death penalty has been condemned by NGOs and legal rights

Kiev, Ukraine -- Both Kiev and Washington say that Russian forces are massing in large numbers near Ukraine´s eastern border -- and that they represent a threat to Ukraine and potentially to other former Soviet states. It´s hard to pin down an exact figure, amid a welter of different views, but the U.S. and Ukraine agree the number of Russian soldiers present is rising fast. (Snip) The 30,000-plus troops on the border are "significantly more" than what is needed for the "exercises" Russia says it has been conducting, and there is no sign they are making any move to return

Support for the health care reform law is at its lowest point since it was enacted four years ago, according to a new poll. The Associated Press survey found that only 26 percent of Americans support the Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama’s signature domestic achievement. Forty-three percent said they are opposed to the law. The poll was conducted online, and online polls are typically not as accurate as telephone polls. But the results nevertheless point to political peril for Democratic congressional candidates in the midterm elections, with Republicans again running against the law across the country. The results also

MOSCOW - President Vladimir Putin on Friday said Russia´s takeover of Crimea showed off its military prowess, as his defence minister reported that the Russian flag was now flying over all military sites on the Black Sea peninsula. In a Kremlin ceremony with senior security officials, Sergei Shoigu told Putin that all Ukrainian servicemen still loyal to Kiev have left the Crimea region, whose annexation by Moscow has led to the worst stand-off with the West since the Cold War. "The recent events in Crimea were a serious test," Putin was shown on state television as saying in an echoing

Washington - The United States and Europe must stand firm in rejecting Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and its annexation of Crimea not just because they challenge the principles a peaceful and prosperous Europe is built on, President Obama said Wednesday in Brussels, but also because they thwart "universal values" of freedom and self-determination that stir all humanity. The president’s speech – the format Mr. Obama has favored for delivering big messages in foreign places – came at the end of a day during which the American leader visited for the first time two pillars of trans-Atlantic relations: NATO headquarters and

BRUSSELS — President Obama said Wednesday that Europe and the United States now face “a moment of testing” that challenges their unity and the international order they have worked for generations to build. In a speech Wednesday evening at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in this Belgian capital, Obama suggested that the current standoff with Russia over its incursion into Ukraine is part of a more fundamental struggle between democratic ideals and “an older, more traditional view of power.” He warned against “complacency” in the face of what he called Russia’s violations of international law in taking over Crimea. “If we

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the sweeping acceptance of gay marriage in recent years is owed in large part to Christianity. Rejecting the rigidly hierarchical and stratified societies of the ancient world, Jesus Christ taught the equal dignity of all persons, proclaimed that the meek shall inherit the earth, and declared that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The Western world has been working out the logic of these subversive teachings ever since, with the institutional transformation of marriage being the latest, though surely not the last, example of its social, moral,

If Betsey McCaughey is correct (and I bet she is, because she has not only read the entire ObamaCare bill, she has written a book about it), Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan publicly humiliated herself during the oral arguments on the Hobby Lobby case, revealing that she either did not read the law, or failed to comprehend it if she did so. Writing in the New York Sun, McCaughey lays out what is wrong with the Justice’s declaration about Obamacare: she asserted that the statute itself mandates provision of birth control. Not one word in the Affordable Care Act guarantees health plans will cover birth control products.

They say it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can attack proteins in the body known to cause heart disease. The study found bergamot could even be as effective as statins, used to control cholesterol but which can have side effects in
