Such a tragedy. Storms pop up quickly here in the summer. The heat and a little moisture are all it takes. Natives know never to listen to the forecasters.

Perhaps lightening does strike twice. Ba and Ma going on vaca again soon? Oh right, headed to the vineyards. The Canyon would be a nice alternative.

The Wake County Public School System has removed an assignment from its middle-school history curriculum after a Knightdale mother complained that it was racially insensitive. Amaya Melvin´s eighth-grade class at East Wake Middle School is studying the Civil War, and the students were given an essay assignment entitled "I am a slave." "For her to have to put herself in the shoes of a slave, for her to complete the assignment, she had to be a slave at the moment. I didn´t think that was appropriate," said Amaya´s mother, Ariel Melvin-Hall, who is black. "It´s harsh. It cuts deep."

Some Arizonans who secured health coverage through the federal marketplace are now finding that their new plans drastically limit the providers they can use. Metro Phoenix and Tucson residents who signed up for plans with so-called narrow networks have discovered fewer options for primary-care doctors, specialists, hospitals, pharmacies, labs and clinics. And some rural Arizonans purchasing the least-expensive plan in their communities have discovered that the nearest participating doctor is 200 miles away. Insurers and brokers acknowledge that some consumers are confused by the narrow networks, a strategy health insurers embrace to lower costs.

Nearly two years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court smacked down the Environmental Protection Agency in a landmark property rights case. The court ruled that the EPA was overstepping its bounds in going after the Sackett family of Idaho. In 2007 the Sacketts wanted to build their dream home on their own land, but the EPA swept in and tried to stop them, arguing that their land was a “wetland.” It wasn’t a wetland, the Sacketts tried to go to court to win their property rights back, but the EPA ruled that they had no right even to defend themselves in court.

Mitt Romney is going the full Bob Dole. You never go the full Bob Dole.Back in 1996, the media fed a portrayal of GOP presidential hopeful Dole as a dour, humorless opponent to President Bill Clinton. Dole lost. Then, months later, we saw a new Dole in the press. He was funny, self-deprecating and smart, the kind of guy you could grab a beer with and trust. He got a friendly reception at liberal outposts like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. It was too late then, but Dole probably enjoyed the second media life. Now, Romney is threatening to go down

Some of defendants’ statements, however, contain what could reasonably be understood as assertions of fact. Accusing a scientist of conducting his research fraudulently, manipulating his data

James Dobson’s Focus on the Family asked Christians to pray for rain to fall on Barack Obama in 2008 when he accepted the presidential nomination. Various religious conservatives have said that hurricanes, earthquakes and other meteorological phenomena were divine punishment of wayward humans. So what are we to make of Wednesday’s March for Life on the Mall in Washington? The temperature was 12 degrees at the start of the annual antiabortion event, the wind chill below zero, and participants were trudging about in snow and ice from the previous day’s storm.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated on Tuesday that the Affordable Care Act will reduce the number of full-time workers by 2.5 million over the next decade. That is mostly a good thing, a liberating result of the law. Of course, Republicans immediately tried to brand the findings as “devastating” and stark evidence of President Obama’s health care reform as a failure and a job killer. It is no such thing. (SNIP) The new law will free people, young and old, to pursue careers or retirement without having to worry about health coverage.

The Affordable Care Act, aka ObamaCare, became law almost four years ago. It became operational last Oct. 1. Yesterday, Feb. 4, 2014, the ACA may well have been dealt its death blow. The Congressional Budget Office released a major study of the government’s budget and its effect on the overall economy over the next 10 years. In dull bureaucratic language, it delivers a devastating analysis of the inefficiencies, ineffectualities and problematic social costs of ObamaCare. The one-two punch: Virtually as many Americans will lack health coverage in 10 years as before the law was passed — but 2 million fewer

President Obama, outlining his push Tuesday to bring high-speed Internet access to more U.S. schools, said Americans should demand the same level of technology in learning facilities as they do in coffee shops. “In a country where we expect free Wi-Fi with our coffee, we should definitely demand it in our schools,” Obama said in Adelphi, Md., highlighting $750 million in new commitments from private companies to put digital learning labs in schools. Under his plan, the Federal Communications Commission will also spend $2 billion to connect 20 million students to wireless technologies.

The day produced more evidence blowing apart President Obama´s claims that there was "not even a smidgen of corruption" or political motivation in the IRS handling of groups applying for tax-exempt status. Mr. Obama wants Americans to believe that the targeting resulted from the confusing tax law governing nonprofits, which he says was "difficult" to interpret and resulted in mere "bureaucratic" mistakes.
