Bureaucracy in Venezuela
has failed to empower workers

El Universal [Caracas, Venezuela], by Yaneth Fernández

The idea of a ‘workerist government´ has been peddled in Venezuela for some years now. The late Hugo Chávez did it, and President Nicolás Maduro is persistent about it. But what do they mean by this notion? One would take that to mean that all conflicts related to labor liabilities have been settled, or that the minimum wage keeps up with inflation, or that the social security system works. Unfortunately, reality gets in the way. The government keeps huge debts with public sector workers as reported by workers themselves. Strikes, labor disputes,

Thanks to Chávez and Maduro getting into bed with the Castro brothers. You would think that just by looking at the mess Cuba has been in since the 60´s that they would have been smarter than they are. God help the people of Venezuela.

anyway check out a book in English translation called the Guide to the Perfect Latin American Idiot (the authors are from Colombia, Cuba, and Peru) and you can understand the cretins who are currently running Venezuela. And the book was written in the early 90s in Spanish when Chavez was just an obscure military officer preparing his version of the Beer Hall Putsch. It was his greatest military accomplishment (except, perhaps, for graduating from jump school).

The NYC Dunkin´ Donuts location at 37th Street and 8th Avenue has some explaining to do after a video surfaced earlier this week showing a rat just doing rat things on top of some pastries. The donut-fed monster was not alone, according to the man who filmed the video. "My phone ran out of power, or I would´ve filmed the outright nine deep rat assault which followed the action above," wrote Pjayone. "The items in the video that are being besieged upon by the rats were to be sold for that mornings breakfast rush. The events you see in videos happened at

Is British TV chef Nigella Lawson’s archenemy ex-husband Charles Saatchi behind the move to deny her entry to the US? The powerful businessman has a family connection to the Obama campaign and the current US Ambassador in London, Matthew Barzun. Barzun was appointed as US Ambassador by President Obama last year. The former CNET exec is a longtime activist in the Democratic party, and was a prominent fund-raiser for the 2008 Obama campaign, organizing mass events. Saatchi’s nephew, Edward Saatchi, also worked on the 2008 Obama campaign as a manager and founded NationalField, a social network to allow campaign staff to share information.

This time, the person who met him was upset that he had carry-on luggage and then abandoned him before they arrived at customs.

SANTIAGO, Chile — A powerful magnitude-8.2 earthquake struck off northern Chile on Tuesday night, setting off a small tsunami that forced evacuations along the country’s entire Pacific coast. Officials reported two deaths and several serious injuries, but the area apparently escaped major damage as landslides blocked roads, power failed for thousands, an airport was damaged and several businesses caught fire. Iquique Gov. Gonzalo Prieto told Radio Cooperativa that two people were known to have died after the quake hit at 8:46 p.m. and several others had serious injuries. The mayor of Tarapaca attributed the deaths to heart attacks. The U.S. Geological Survey

And it stinks, literally, with toilet paper, diapers, soap and deodorant joining drugs on the list. That shutoff from global standards is what prevents willing buyers from acquiring goods from abroad, the source of 80% of Venezuela´s consumer staples. No foreign currency, no purchases. Further down the line, price controls have driven more shortages as costs to produce in an economy with a 56% inflation rate have made it impossible to turn a profit.

Conclusions of a 19th century contemporary of Alexis de Tocqueville suggest the latter. ANN ARBOR, Mich. – President Obama compared the Republican budget plan to a "stinkburger" or "meanwich" during a speech here Wednesday, using a series of zingers in an attempt to strike a contrast with the GOP on economic issues in an election year. Obama, who visited the local Zingerman´s deli before the speech, said that Republican proposals to cut taxes for wealthier Americans and

A proposal is in the works that would change the state tax system to charge drivers by the mile, instead of at the gas pump. The proposal would be to charge a half cent per mile for cars, which would generate almost $500 million in annual state revenue. A driver who travelled 15,000 miles in a year would pay about $75. "Basically you pay per the mile. Do you think members of Congress are overpaid or underpaid? Most likely you’d go with the former, but Democratic congressman Jim Moran argues it’s actually the latter. In an interview with CQ Roll Call, Moran says, “I think the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid.” The House recently took up a bill to freeze members’ paychecks, placing another halt on the annual cost-of-living pay increases they would normally get and keeping annual salary at $174,000. Moran believes that this is the wrong way to go, not necessarily talking about himself in particular, but saying there

With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.

The human kindling that makes up the flammable Republican base may soon burst into flames, again. Portions of that excitable cohort are looking — some with fawn-like eyes filled with hurt, others with sparks shooting from eyes narrowed like gun slits — askance at other Republicans urging Jeb Bush to seek the 2016 presidential nomination. A candidacy by Florida’s former governor would be desirable. But if Republicans want to avoid intra-party carnage, they should be very careful about doing what The Post recently reported: “Many of the Republican Party’s most powerful insiders and financiers have begun a behind-the-scenes campaign to draft
