There was no conciliatory phone call, no heart-to-heart talk to soothe the tensions. No one knows exactly when President Barack Obama and Republican Sen. John McCain went from bitter rivals in the 2008 presidential campaign and foes over health care and national security to bipartisan partners.Yet in recent months, an alignment on high-profile domestic issues — not to mention an eye on their respective legacies — has transformed Obama and McCain into Washington´s most unexpected odd couple. The Arizona senator is a regular visitor to the West Wing and in near-daily contact with senior White House officials.
Comments: McCain, crossing the aisle....to play nicey nice with a Marxist, as he does everything he can to destroy conservatives. Our 2008 nominee.
I used to think a lot of McCain, but since his pretty pathetic run for the Presidency and, particularly, since then, his statements, actions, and positions have convinced me that he is not really a Republican or a Conservative at all.
john mccain was not OUR nominee! He was selected by the media and crossover voters in the early primaries that allow that. He is an example of the reason our selection process must change. Heavy red states should hold the early CLOSED primaries.
I´ll agree they are, indeed, an odd couple, but not new one´s. By design, McCain handed Obama the 2008 election: No. I don´t know why.
I predict Sarah Palin will be the catalyst for a third party before the end of this year; and, why not. Conservatives have nothing to lost by starting one.
I also believe there are many, democrats whom are tired of the liberal fantasies, which will flock to a third party. One´s that would never switch over to become republicans . . . Why should they? there´s not enough difference between the D´s & R,s to motivate them to become republicans.
The only question left is what was McCain paid or promised? You don´t give up a life of principled military service and work and suddenly lick the hand of the enemy like a whipped dog. McCain didn´t really want to be president or he would have run a much better campaign and beaten the muslim/kenyan. What´s in it for him now?
He was far from my nominee (I touted Rudy here, under the moniker "Bliss"). But the social conservatives made short business of that. At least I voted though, and no one can tell me that the picture would not have been very different.
Bitter rivals my foot. McCrazy is the guy who told us not to worry if Obama won. Everything would be just fine. While he was running against him! It sure would be interesting to know exactly what went on back then.
The real problem is republicans aretoo civilized, while the left takes no prisoners, using every dirty tactic in the book to win.
Just another examplelast week was banning college republicans from Obama´s speech. A blatent act of discrimination, solely based on a political belief system. Obama,as a president of the whole country, has absolutely no business discriminating against people over the false fear they could be a security risk.
In McCain´s case they just love to use him as a stooge to make the republicans look more open minded, when he hardly represents the party´s belief system as a whole.
Then you have his sidekick,Miss Lindsey who threw in the towel on opposing Sotomayor on the first day of hearings. How many times have we seen the left go to the mat stopping conservative SC judges. But no,we have to play nice and give Obama the benefit of the doubt.
#14 has forgotten that Guiliani skipped all the primaries to "make his stand in Florida...that was brilliant strategy. Then there were the campaign speeches with phone calls from his creepy wife...just too much for most of us.
I wouldn´t trust McCain as far as I could throw an elephant. Remember how he trashed Bush for eight years. I think the won is going to appoint Mc to a cabinet position. ...they are such a lovely couple.
Commentaries by two of China´s most influential news outlets suggesting that the country´s air pollution crisis was not without a silver lining drew a withering reaction on Tuesday from internet users and other media. In online commentaries on Monday, state broadcaster CCTV and the widely read tabloid the Global Times, published by the Communist Party´s official People´s Daily, both tried to put a positive spin on China´s smog problem. The Global Times said smog could be useful in military situations, as it could hinder the use of guided missiles, while CCTV listed five "unforeseen rewards" for smog, including helping Chinese people´s sense

Raising concerns about consumer privacy, California´s health exchange has given insurance agents the names and contact information for tens of thousands of people who went online to check out coverage but didn´t ask to be contacted. The Covered California exchange said it started handing out this consumer information this week as part of a pilot program to help people enroll ahead of a Dec. 23 deadline to have health insurance in place by Jan. 1.State officials said they are only trying to help potential customers find insurance and sign up in time. But some insurance brokers and consumers who were
ST. PAUL, Minn. Jeff Ansorge once commanded a staff of 17 and made around $80,000 a year as executive chef at a posh downtown Minneapolis restaurant where a 24-ounce dry aged Porterhouse steak goes for $48. But he gave it all up to become the head cook of a Salvation Army soup kitchen, where the meals are free. Now he brings his culinary skills to bear making salmon, ribs and stews for the poor and homeless who come to The Salvation Army Eastside Corps Community Center in St. Paul. For the Thanksgiving meal that’s being served Wednesday, Ansorge planned a traditional
The National Park Service is not interested in coming up with plans to let states pay to keep parks open should another government shutdown occur, a service official testified late last week to a House subcommittee.Park Service Comptroller Bruce Sheaffer said a bill to require such planning for all 401 national parks could take too much time and money — a position that was blasted as “atrocious” by the subcommittee chairman. The Provide Access and Retain Continuity Act was one of two bills in response to the October shutdown of the federal government, when the closure of parks like the
They work until 11 at night, lug 40-pound garment bags throughout the city and get scolded for not adhering tape to mood boards correctly. And yet being a Condé Nast intern remains one of the most coveted, sought-after unpaid jobs in town.To an aspiring media-ite, a Condé internship is a stiletto stacked in prestige wrapped in promises of opportunity. It is a fancy incubator for future media power players: Fashion designer Whitney Port, author Lauren Conrad and beauty blogger Emily Weiss all got their start interning at the media mammoth. So you can imagine the surprise when, last month, Condé
The Obama administration plans to delay by a full month the open enrollment period for Obamacare´s second year, in a move that a Republican campaign strategist called ´nakedly political.´ According to Healthcare.gov, the Department of Health and Human Service´s official online portal for the Affordable Care Act, enrollment for 2015 is scheduled to begin on October 15, 2014 and end on December 7. But an HHS official said Thursday that the schedule has been bumped back, beginning on November 15, 2014 and ending on January 15, 2015. That timetable will ensure that the midterm elections come and go before the new
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina said Tuesday that it will raise rates as much as 24 percent on 2013 individual health insurance plans that are being extended next year. The increase is double the price inflation for the same health plans just a year ago, but many Blue Cross customers who have grumbled about rising costs in past years are cheering the news this time. The health plans in question were slated for elimination under the Affordable Care Act, the nation’s health care law, but Blue Cross said last week it would offer the plans next year. President
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) says everyone should stop talking so much about the 2016 presidential race, because doing so hurts President Obama, who´s only a year into his second term. "In this sense, I feel badly for President Obama. He just won a year ago, and everybody´s like, ´So, who´s next?´" Christie said Monday night at the Wall Street Journal CEO Council. "There is work to be done in this country. And as we shove him out the door, we minimize his ability to be an effective executive. And we shouldn´t do that." Even as he urged people to focus
I recently wrote on an unreported situation involving Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh (“The unreported scandal,” Nov. 3 and TribLIVE.com). But it has been misinterpreted on two scores, which I´d like to clarify. But first, a summary of what I said.Dan Rooney has been a big advocate of Barack Obama since 2008. Rooney recently hosted a promotional event for ObamaCare at Heinz Field. He did so with Kathleen Sebelius, architect of Obama´s Health and Human Services mandate requiring all religious institutions to fund abortion drugs — no conscientious objection permitted. It´s so egregious that
HILLSBORO, Ore. – Nine parents pulled their seventh- and eighth-graders out of math class and started teaching them at home, because they are upset with the new Common Core curriculum that public schools in Oregon are starting this year.Seventh-grader Amy Craig has always been an "A" student in math until this year. She came home with a "D." (Snip)A KATU News reporter tried to ask Petrick whether the Common Core standards were the best thing if nine families had pulled their kids out of class because their kids were so stressed and distraught, but the Hillsboro School District spokeswoman cut
The fight over how to define the new health law’s success is coming down to one question: Who counts as an Obamacare enrollee? Health insurance plans only count subscribers as enrolled in a health plan once they’ve submited a payment. That is when the carrier sends out a member card and begins paying doctor bills. When the Obama administration releases health law enrollment figures later this week, though, it will use a more expansive definition. It will count people who have purchased a plan as well as those who have a plan sitting in their online shopping cart but have not yet
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
On his way to the podium at the memorial ceremony for former South African president Nelson Mandela, President Obama walked down the line of dignitaries, greeting other leaders there to pay their respects. Among the hands shaken: that of Cuban leader Raul Castro. Obama neither made a special effort to shake Castro’s hand nor to avoid him. A snub might have been awkward: In his speech, Obama praised Mandela’s “greatest gift” as “his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
The Obama State Department has finally released a second round of photos revealing the harrowing devastation wrought by a terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. The new photographs depict rampant damage to the consulate. They show charred walls, smoldering fires, Arabic graffiti defacing exterior walls, and scattered debris throughout. The extent of the damage would lead any reasonably serious person to conclude that this was a cold, calculated attack, carefully coordinated to mark the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Unfortunately for the American people, the Obama-Clinton-Rice cabal that led to the Benghazi cover-up was
A black fashion student says he was brutally attacked by a gang of Hasidic men who shouted anti-gay slurs at him while he was walking through Williamsburg after a night of partying, the Daily News has learned. Taj Patterson, 22, was headed home to Fort Greene around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he says more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jewish men began assaulting him on Flushing Ave. and yelling, “Stay down, f----t!”
A “presidential selfie” featuring President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service began making the rounds this morning, but it’s the person not included in the frame who caught everyone’s attention: As anyone with two eyes and a Twitter account has noticed, Michelle Obama does not appear amused. Of course, though a picture says a thousand words, not all of those words are necessarily true. FLOTUS might not have even known the photo was taking place. Or she could disapprove of funeral selfies. Either way.
President Obama’s job approval among American voters has dropped to negative territory with just 38 percent voicing their approval versus the 58 who says they disapprove, according to a national poll released Tuesday by the independent Quinnipiac University. That is one percent less than the 39% who said they approved of him in last month’s poll. The majority of the 2,692 registered voters the University in early December said that the president is not honest and trustworthy. When asked, “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as President?,” respondents gave Obama lackluster ratings
Looks like this president can’t get away with flirting in front of his wife… It appears that first lady Michelle Obama was none too pleased with the way that President Barack Obama was acting toward Denmark Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt during a ceremony honoring Nelson Mandela, and before too long, they switched seats. The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela´s memorial yesterday "made up his own signs," according to South Africa´s deaf federation. "He´s a complete fraud," Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town, said according to ITV News. "He wasn´t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter at DeafSA, told Reuters:
