Motown no more
Orange County Register (Ca), by Mark Steyn

Original Article

By the time Detroit declared bankruptcy, Americans were so inured to the throbbing dirge of Motown´s Greatest Hits – 40 percent of its streetlamps don´t work; 210 of its 317 public parks have been permanently closed; it takes an hour for police to respond to a 911 call; only a third of its ambulances are drivable; one-third of the city has been abandoned; the local Realtor offers houses on sale for a buck and still finds no takers; etc., etc. – Americans were so inured that the formal confirmation of a great city´s downfall was greeted with little

Mark´s weekly OCR column should be a permanent MUST READ every week.

In fact, I kinda like it when Rush takes a few days off and lets his "undocumented anchorman," the "foreign exchange student" at the EIB Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies take the mic.

Maybe El Rushbo can get a gig like Johnny Carson had and take every Monday off and let Mark be the permanent guest host.

So what is the judge´s suggestion in lieu of bankruptcy ? That´s something I would like to hear. I can guess - she wants OTHERS to pay off Detroit´s debt. Lady, we do NOT want to throw our money in the toilet. and we do NOT want our money redistributed to anyone except those we want to give it to.

Humorous, but actually a warning. The same forces that dragged-down Detroit could very easily destroy the whole country within another generation.

Steyn was brilliant behind the Golden EIB Microphone today.

Brilliant and cogent and poetic without effort.

Unlike D. Miller who is brilliant, but makes up his stuff in advance. IMHO

But I bet the city employee pensions are doing ok though.

With all the horror movies that Hollywood is doing right now, maybe they could buy all the abandoned homes, buildings, etc and use them as sets. Some of the pictures I have seen have a heartbreaking creepiness about them.

Democrat mayors since 1961

Republican mayors 1933-1962 (minus a 2 yr Dem mayor). Most prosperous time for Detroit.

82% of the city is black

As of 2005, Michigan held the largest and still growing Muslim population in the United States and the second largest Arab population outside of the Middle East.

Anyone wanna connect the dots ?

If you want to see all of the dots connected get this documentary by Idaho legislator, Curtis Bowers. It´s called Agenda: Grinding America Down. (watch the youtube excerpt) I bought five to share with friends and family.

FTA: “So, late Friday, some genius jurist struck down the bankruptcy filing. Judge Rosemarie Aquilina declared Detroit´s bankruptcy ´unconstitutional´ because, according to the Detroit Free Press, ´the Michigan Constitution prohibits actions that will lessen the pension benefits of public employees´."

In a tiny bit later article, Mr. Steyn elaborated on the ‘genius jurist’ ruling:
‘The news that Judge Rosemarie Aquilina had struck down Detroit’s belated reality check as “unconstitutional” came just as I was wrapping up my weekend column, so I only caught up later with this choice morsel: “It’s cheating, sir, and it’s cheating good people who work,” the judge told assistant Attorney General Brian Devlin on Friday, adding that she will ensure that President Barack Obama gets a copy of her order. “It’s also not honoring the president, who took [Detroit’s auto companies] out of bankruptcy.” The right of the President not to be dishonored shall not be infringed.’

To say that ´progressive liberalism´ brought down Detroit is to assume that the members of the Detroit City Council have enough intelligence to pursue a political strategy of any kind. They are a group of the most astonishingly stupid people I have ever seen. And if you knew what I have seen in my lifetime that is saying something.

#19, Detroit´s citizens elected those politicians and kept them there. They put up with the crime because they were getting free stuff. They had a racial chip on their shoulders and used it for all it was worth.

Detroit can´t be saved because the rot goes way beyond the decayed buildings and abandoned neighborhoods. We left there 27 years ago and it was obvious to us then. Now it´s obvious to everybody.

What makes me even sadder is that I´m starting to think that in the long run, the rest of the country can´t be saved either.

All I can figure is they truly believe that they´d be worse off if they didn´t vote for the Ds, although I can´t imagine how much worse their lives can be at this point.

Here´s an interesting fact about Detroit´s changing demographics over time.

As the city began to decline, whites fled the city in record numbers. However, more blacks moved into the city. In other words, the total number of blacks actually increased as the city became a cesspool/toilet. Go figure.

#21, don´t feel so sad. So many of the younger generations participate in so much liberal stupidity. (See the article about North Carolina above.) They can blame another generation, but they are guilty as well.

The younger generation will only learn if the see what stupid liberal/progressive/democrat policies do.

Here is an excellent example. (Not that the average liberal is smart enough to connect those dots.)

Saying Democrats ran Detroit into the ground lets blacks off the hook. Blacks were so violent that whites fled, blacks burned buildings and trashed the rest. Blacks looted all the money. Would the same thing have happened if Detroit was 90% white Birkenstock liberals?

Would make a great disaster flick. Right up there with Sharknado. Take the most prosperous city in America and turn it into a smoldering ruin in 50 years. Blind greed led the way with usual suspects... crooked liberal politicians and unions. Everyone knew that the financial model for the auto industry was doomed yet they milked it to the bitter end. The result? White flight on a scale never before seen and a city that now resembles Dresden. At this point don´t send good money after bad. The only money we should send should be to raze the place to the ground.

I grew up in Detroit. My family left in ´63... about the time that my older sister could not get into a parochial (private) school. That was also the time when blacks were protesting racial injustice in the South by waylaying people coming to pick up their kids from after school programs. Just like Trayvon protests, doncha know. Then came forced busing to ameliorate the situation and that triggered white flight: vast numbers of the productive, employed, financially able and law abiding left for the suburbs.

It only got worse when Coleman Young, knowing that these people were NOT his constituency, bad mouthed and denigrated them and their preferences.

But, you know, I think the real damage started with telling parents that their kids belonged to the city and the parents couldn´t choose where they went to school.

Mormons don´t like to be in the political news, thinking they are part of a different kingdom (even traditional Chritians deny their claim of being Christians--so lets call them Chrisstites or restored Christianity having arisen out of America´s period of Restoration and westarding movement--in the case of the Mormons and native Americans in the south, forced movement at the point of point of Minister driven mobs (yes even in the Trail of Tears someone was leading the people on the frontier)and US Military and states militias swords and guns. Good news for them as they were out of the way as the North and south whites duked it out and came to a resolution?

Consider the societies and cultures formed by each in their apartheid conditions (though the US didn´t leave either the Mormon´s of Utah territory or the native American 5 civilized tribes of Indian territory alone for long and what drove them? Gold, but that is another story.

Look to those societies and what has been created for its subculture. Mormons were Puritan based leadership and a wave of British converts seeking to build a life after the initial Joseph Smith beginning years. Community, cooperation and throw God into the mix (or wasn´t He the originator of the mix?) and what have you? A people honed in the fire? As were our original Puritans driven for religious freedom and the Jsmestonians of the religious/Civil wars of England?

IOW there is another way for folks to elate to each other, grab the rod, put your back to the wheel and do what you can do yourselves. The world is willing and waiting to help self effort unlike opposition faced by other minorities.

Folks I hate to break it to you, but Detroit was lost 20 years ago.

I remember taking a cab from the Bonaventure Hotel to SEMA in 1986. I noticed that the cabie was a black Arab who spoke broken english.

I had asked why there was a 2 inch thick poly-acrylic shield between he and I. He stated it was bullet proof screen that the cab company had placed in all their cabs. The screen was used to help reduce a rash of cabie killings over the past few years.

I intuitively knew then that Detroit was lost

#26 ~ Soetoro is an Indonesian name ~ buried in there is a CHINESE name ~ the rest of it is more or less an overseas Hokkianese phrase.

The moslem majority exerts considerable social pressure on the Chinese to adust their names to something more traditional Malay in structure and appearance.

They have been known to do this by killing hundreds of thousands of people ~ some serious social pressure.

So, here´s my take on breaking it down: S´oii - t´oro ~ that ´oii´ right after the S´ is the most common Chinese name in SE Asia.

There are some websites that discuss transforming "oii´ to "oe"

You might have noticed it´s misspelled ~ that´s so I can get it in under the auto-edit systems in place in so terribly many websites.

There´s this other term "Chicom" you might find useful.

Socialist, Communist, etc ~ all the traditional terms are easily subsumed under the single word "totalitarianism" ~ but the practitioners gotta´ have a special term of oprobrium ~ "leftwingtard" meets that need.

One of those documents attempts to explain Hillary´s "vast right-wing conspiracy" claim in which the Clinton administration accused Republican staffers of colluding with "extremists" on the Internet to hurt the Clintons. On January 27, 1998, Hillary Clinton appeared on NBC´s Today Show. According to PolicyMic.com, Ommanney was sent to photograph American gun owners for the German magazine Stern. In so doing, he discovered "people who are often far from the stereotypical vision of the American ´gun-nut.´" He found a teenager named Elizabeth, who posed with a Walther handgun "in front of a floral wallpaper backdrop." He found entire families--mother, father, daughter, son--who posed with their firearms of choice. Ommanney also found one woman with a pump shotgun for home

As the nation awaits Hillary Clinton´s decision of whether or not she will run for president in 2016, a cache of 7,500 pages of newly released documents from Bill Clinton´s years in the White House show some familiar political themes. One revelation is that Bill Clinton worried that a massive new healthcare scheme would cause Americans to lose their insurance. In 1993, the President allowed his wife, first lady Hillary Clinton, to become the face of an Obamacare-like takeover of the nation´s healthcare system. The plan was sarcastically dubbed Hillarycare. But as these internal documents show, in what is now a

For Hillary Clinton, having her own baby grandchild to kiss on the campaign trail, could be one of the biggest boosts to her possible presidential election campaign. Although the former Secretary of State and First Lady has not said if she will run in 2016, the arrival of her first grandchild will soften her image, analysts have said. While Chelsea only revealed her pregnancy on Thursday, supporters of her mother have already started cooing over a possible baby in the White House. With the Clintons having a near-royal status in the U.S., the announcement of a new arrival due this fall has sent

WASHINGTON AND NEW YORK - In September 2001, as the U.S. reeled from the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Vladimir Putin supported Washington´s imminent invasion of Afghanistan in ways that would have been inconceivable during the Cold War. He agreed that U.S. planes carrying humanitarian aid could fly through Russian air space. He said the U.S. military could use airbases in former Soviet republics in Central Asia. And he ordered his generals to brief their U.S. counterparts on their own ill-fated 1980s occupation of Afghanistan. During Putin´s visit to President George W. Bush´s Texas ranch two

A new photo of a mysterious flying object over Kansas has been revealed. It appears to be the same aircraft as one that was snapped soaring over Texas last month. The exact identify of the aircraft remains a mystery, but rumours abound that it could be a secret jet. ´The photo is grainy because it was taken with a hand-held maxed-out 400mm telephoto lens through a cloud layer and then it was severely cropped to bring it up even close,´ says Jeff Templin, who took the photo on 16 April. ´There is no way to know the altitude and no way to judge its

Could the 2016 presidential election turn into a contest between a Bush and a Clinton? Political debate in America last week revolved around whether or not Jeb Bush, Florida´s former governor who is son or brother to two former US presidents – both named George – would jump into the 2016 battle for the Republican presidential nomination. For a nation that fought a war for independence from the hereditary power of the British Crown, in the person of another fellow named George, the concept of nominating a third Bush to run for the White House against a second Clinton (the former

"I´m over here!" shouts Kate Humble, and she of Springwatch and Lambing Live gambols towards me, closing the gate on a field of anxious goats and their Disney-cute babies. She´s carrying a bucket. "I was just about to muck out," she announces, and I´m reminded this is a working farm in the Wye Valley and in no way a TV set. The photographer has already done his work and gone. Apparently Humble had no idea he was coming. It is hard to think of another TV person on the planet for whom an impromptu photoshoot while wearing a well-loved fleece and

Alert shoppers are accustomed to watching food prices go up and down. But a string of forces—from droughts to diseases—is raising the cost of a trip to the grocery store at a rapid clip. And it looks like it will be a while before the price pressure eases. Some of that pressure is coming from California—the source of roughly half the nation´s fruits and vegetables—where a long-running drought is forcing farmers and ranchers to cut production. After the driest year on record, large sections of farmland are expected to lay fallow this year as the Golden State copes with an ongoing water

Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) on Friday called for a Senate hearing into the dispute between Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) over cattle grazing. Heller described as "patriots" the people who came armed to Bundy’s ranch after the BLM began to seize his cattle for refusing to pay grazing fees and fines that now total more than $1 million. Heller debated the ranch standoff on a Nevada television station with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who has called the armed Bundy supporters “domestic terrorists.” "What senator Reid may call domestic terrorists, I call patriots," Heller said.

If expanding the guest list to include Michelle Obama at graduation for high school students in the Kansas capital city means fewer seats for friends and family, some students and their parents would prefer the first lady not attend. A furor over what the Topeka school district considers an honor has erupted after plans were announced for Obama to address a combined graduation ceremony for five area high schools next month an 8,000-seat arena. For some, it was the prospect of a tight limit on the number of seats allotted to each graduate. For others, it was the notion that Obama´s speech,

That was quite a victory dance President Obama did Thursday while claiming Obamacare is “working” because eight million people have now supposedly signed up for the health care program. He even indulged in some less-than-subtle mockery of Republicans - and by extension the majority of Americans who have disapproved of Obamacare since before it became law. "The repeal debate is and should be over,” Obama said, taking a dig at Republicans who are “going through, you know, the stages of grief … anger and denial and all that stuff …” But a president who is viewed by most Americans as less

GREENSBORO, Ga. — Golf holes the size of pizzas. Soccer balls on the back nine. A mulligan on every hole. These are some of the measures — some would say gimmicks — that golf courses across the country have experimented with to stop people from quitting the game. Golf has always reveled in its standards and rich tradition. But increasingly a victim of its own image and hidebound ways, golf has lost five million players in the last decade, according to the National Golf Foundation, with 20 percent of the existing 25 million golfers apt to quit in the next few years. People under 35 have especially spurned the game, saying it takes too

In a speech earlier this week, Lisa O. Monaco, President Barack Obama’s assistant for homeland security and counterterrorism, insisted that American parents must be vigilant because their “confrontational” children could be on the verge of becoming terrorists. Monaco’s full, prepared text is available here. She presented the speech, entitled “Countering Violent Extremism and the Power of Community,” at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government on April 15. Monaco began her remarks by eloquently describing the lives tragically lost last year during the Boston Marathon bombings. Interestingly, the Harvard grad failed to mention the religion or the motive of brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan

Hi, everybody. For millions of Americans, this time of year holds great meaning. Earlier this week, we hosted a Passover Seder at the White House, and joined Jewish families around the world in their re-tellings of the story of the Exodus and the victory of faith over oppression. And this Sunday, Michelle, Malia, Sasha, and I will join our fellow Christians around the world in celebrating the Resurrection of Christ, the salvation he offered the world, and the hope that comes with the Easter season. These holy days have their roots in miracles that took place long ago. And yet, they still inspire us, guide us, and strengthen us today. They remind us of our

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday that a family of dissident ranchers and their supporters in his home state of Nevada are ´domestic terrorists,´ citing this week´s standoff with the federal government´s Bureau of Land Management. Cliven Bundy has refused to pay grazing fees for land where his hundreds of cattle roam every day. The land is owned by the federal government, which says he owes more than $1 million. Bundy, however, insists that since his family has been using the land since the 1870s, Uncle Sam can´t collect the grazing fees. A tense standoff developed this week after

WASHINGTON--Rushing to an afternoon vote last month, Sen. Ted Cruz hopped the underground tram to the U.S. Capitol from his office across the street. The Texan planted his black ostrich cowboy boots in the middle of the small subway car without getting so much as a nod from the other senators--Republican or Democrat--amiably chatting or huddled in their seats. Mr. Cruz finds himself standing alone a lot these days. His response to the cold shoulders: "The establishment despised Ronald Reagan" before he became president, "but the people loved him." If the Rev. John DeBonville could preach a sermon to lift the souls of churchgoers across America, his message would be simple: Stop dressing so tacky for church. DeBonville has heard about the “come as you are” approach to dressing down for Sunday service, but he says the Sabbath is getting too sloppy. When he scans the pews of churches, DeBonville sees rows of people dressed in their Sunday worst. They saunter into church in baggy shorts, flip-flop sandals, tennis shoes and grubby T-shirts. Some even slide into the pews carrying coffee in plastic foam containers as if they’re going to Starbucks. “It’s like

President Obama asserts that 8 million people have signed up for Obamacare, as though that were something to be proud of. In fact, Obamacare has always been a fiasco from a fiscal perspective–a black hole of subsidies and expanded Medicaid, with largely fictitious mechanisms in place to pay for it. As the number of subsidized participants grows, the disaster gets worse. Charles Blahous explains: Our national discussion…is missing the truly significant story here; what is unfolding before our eyes is a colossal fiscal disaster, poised to haunt legislators and taxpayers for decades to come. It is quite possible that the ACA is

“On the third day, he rose again.” That line, from the Nicene Creed, is a foundational statement of Christian belief. It declares that three days after Jesus died on the cross, he was resurrected, a glimmer of the eternal life promised to believers. It’s the heart of the Easter story in seven little words. But how that statement is interpreted is the source of some of the deepest rifts in Christianity — and a stumbling block for some Christians, and more than a few skeptics. Did Jesus literally come back from the dead in a bodily resurrection, as many traditionalist
