Trooper in trouble over photo

Boston Herald, by Joe Dwinell

A dramatic new photo has been released of the April 19 arrest of accused marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev ... on the same week his floppy-haired Russian Facebook profile image was splashed on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine to the disgust of many. The above photo was taken by Sgt. Sean Murphy, a Massachusetts State Police officer who submitted the photos to Boston Magazine. (Click on the photo to enlarge.) But ... the images have landed the sergeant in hot water. State police spokesman David Procopio released the following statement tonight: "The Massachusetts State Police will conduct

Rolling Stone no doubt thought they were being edgy and very ´hip´ by putting that picture on the cover. They miscalculated.

A writer or editor thought he was physically attractive and would sell magazines. "So the ethics be d*mned. Go with it. The backlash will make us millions."

The media has proven time and again to our country, they only care about the buck.

What I don´t understand is why people keep buying this trash. If we boycott it, it will go out of business and cease being a nuisance.

I´m confused: Why is the trooper being investigated? Because he took the picture? Because law enforcement officers had guns aimed at the terrorist (which is SOP, right?)? What´s the problem here?

This picture also shows that this "kid" wasn´t as wounded as they first reported. They made it sound like he had to be carried off that boat due to all of his injuries, yet this pictures shows he´s bloody, but clearly walking on his own and he doesn´t look like he´s about to collapse.

It is my understanding that if a suicide bomber may be carrying a bomb you don´t allow him to detonate that bomb by only wounding in the leg, arm, etc.
You completely incapacitate him to save nearby lives. That usually means a shot to the head.

I understand the impulse of the officer who leaked the photos, but indulging the impulse was ill-considered...
(a) the swat team photos won´t turn off any dumb Dzhokar groupies, and
(b) the officer´s effort will be in vain and will hurt his career.

How to dispel the delusions of leftist/idiot groupies? A daunting project and maybe not possible. Even if Dzhokar´s victims decided to release photos showing the aftermath of their injuries, I´m not sure any of the slugs´ minds would be changed. Witness their continuing infatuation with the torturer/murderer Che Guevara.

The photo on the cover of Rolling Stone was not a shot that was taken by a Rolling Stone photographer. It was a photo of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev taken about a year ago by a friend or family member, and which many media organizations had already used in their coverage of the bombing. There´s a lot of hypocrisy in the mainstream media - one could even say that there´s confected outrage over the cover of the magazine.

The trooper´s photos released yesterday give a graphic insight into what happened when Tsarnaev was apprehended. I don´t see anything wrong with them. I don´t see why we should be afraid of photos like this. If we´re going to get sensitive over photos like this, we may as well not read anything at all.

I think the problem is that photographs taken by police are part of the evidence presented at trial and this picture is prejudicial in terms of it being released before the jury can see it.

In other words, now that it has been released to the public, there are doubts a judge will let it be entered as evidence during a trial.

The officer didn´t own the rights to the photos if he were documenting in the line of duty AS a police officer and taking photographs for the investigation. They are property of the department and he had no legal ownership to release them in the first place.

Following the massacre of grammar-school children in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, high-powered weapons have been used to kill innocent victims in more senseless public incidents. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators. Nearly a year into the IRS scandal, we still don´t know exactly what happened—though we are finally getting an inkling.
