Trayvon Martin´s parents and brother made their first public appearances on "Today" Thursday morning, telling Matt Lauer they´d felt certain all along that George Zimmerman was going to prison -- and asserting that race fueled the tragic confrontation. "Still shocked, still in disbelief," said Martin´s father, Tracy. "We felt in our hearts that we were gonna get a conviction. We thought that the killer of our unarmed child was gonna be convicted of the crime that he committed." Lauer asked Tracy how he felt about Juror B37´s comments that racial profiling did not play a part in the case.
Comments: Headline misquotes her. She actually said: ´this wouldn´t have never happened´.
Had they been white, there would have been a good chance that that little punk would have grown up with a little respect for his elders. He wouldn´t have had to be booted from school for stealing, for fighting and using dope. (And his father would not have been in a gang)
The media parading these "parents" and the girlfriend all over the media are like the carnival barker standing outside the freak show urging people to come in. They are absolutely irresponsible and trying to stir up a race war. It is going to take people like Charles Barkley to stand up and help us get past this.
We are not a racist nation but the mainstream media is a racist group.
If Trayvon Martin were white, he wouldn´t have assumed it was appropriate for him to respond to being observed by an adult Hispanic male by punching the guy in the face and following that up with at least 40 seconds of ground and pound.
Year by year, there are far more black on white murders than white on black. They wouldn´t know that because the media puts emphasis on race when it is white on black, and hide it as much as they can when it is black on white. The media have incited anti-white hatred for as long as I remember.
When I was in college, I had long hair and a beard. Nice, salt of the earth, Baptist church 3 times a week, BSU president, respectable kid. I had been working at a brick plant (night shift) and went to wait on the girl I was dating to get off work at 100, to get a pizza. She worked at a grocery store. I got out of the car to walk around the parking lot til she got off. Next thing I know, I´m surrounded by cop cars and cops with drawn guns. The manager had been about to take the nights receipts to the night deposit and saw me in the parking lot. Thinking I was some bum or doper waiting to rob him, he called the cops. Was I profiled? Sure. Did I look suspicious? You bet. But I was smart enough to know he had a point, and was glad I knew enough to follow the cops´ orders IMMEDIATELY. Moral: if you look suspicious, act suspicious, and look like you could pose a threat, don´t be surprised if someone thinks you ARE a threat.
If Trayvon were white, he would most likely have 2 married parents, would not have been suspended from school for suspicion of robbery and would not have known a freak like Rachel J., to no name just a few of many racial differences. If George Z was black, he would still have been beaten by Trayvon, and would have most likely used his weapon.
Since Trayvon was black, his birth parents were paid $1.5 million by a frightened condo association.
She´s actually correct to s large extent, you know-- if Trayvon were a white doped-up punk who jumped on a Hispanic watch volunteer and got himself shot, pretty much everything else that followed would indeed have not happened: no race-baiting from the Reverends, no special prosecutor, no trumped-up charges, no show trial...
Could be right. He wouldn´t have been out wandering in the rain, buying a blunt and the fixings for sizzurp/lean. And if he noticed someone following him, he´d have called 911.
He wouldn´t have doubled back, said something like "what´s your problem?" and when the answer came back "I don´t have a problem", said "You have now" and slugged him, and then beaten his head against the concrete walkway.
Just not the kind of stuff the average white teenager does.
If he were white, he wouldn´t have been worried about a "creepy a__ cr___" following him. He would have been glad someone was keeping an eye on the neighborhood; might even have introduced himself or asked for a ride, since it was raining. But because he was wearing his race as a chip on his shoulder, he picked up a fight with the wrong guy.
Do the interviewers ever ask the parents why their son didn´t just go home or to his father´s girlfriend´s house or wherever he was supposedly going instead of getting into a fight? There was plenty of time to do so. I know I would if I felt I (as a black) was being targeted by ´creepy ass cracker´....I´d just go home and moan and groan about being a victim. But I´d be alive.
Isn´t it sad that a 17 year old male is considered a child BUT a 14 year old girl is a woman who can abort a child without parental knowledge. If the 14 year old woman is black we are required to pay for child destruction. Has she just become guilty of violating a black child´s civil right to life. Perhaps it only counts if the aborted child is a male. My white husband was a man at 17 earning his own food housing and clothing and mine too.
No, mommy and daddy. This never would have happened if YOU had been present and accountable for raising your son in a reasonable and responsible manner. You two bear the ultimate responsibility for the way your son saw the world.
What utter crap. If Trayvon´s parents had given him a decent upbringing, he wouldn´t have been a hoodlum at 17. He matters a lot to them now dead--a lot more than he apparently did when he was alive. Can you see what a monumental tragedy that is?
Just now I was listening on Hannity´s show to supperannuated Black Panther and Chicago Democrat congresscritter Bobby Rush, who, like other black racists and their guilty white sympathizers, keeps reciting talking points that are not in agreement with the facts. As for Rush, thaty old war horse is about ten years past due to go to the glue factory.
This afternoon the Reverend Jackson said that Florida was an apartheid state that should be boycotted. He´s no better off in the brains department than the idiot Bobby Rush. States´ stand your ground statutes are now going to be challenged, and if one happens to shoot a thug during an attack, there´ll be hell to pay. The nation spirals down down down to hell as racial relations which had improved so much until the election of Obeyme, are back to Jim Crow, only Old Jim now wears different color skin. And he wants some.
Trayvon´s parents think white people are never viewed as suspicious or targeted by police or security personnel. They are wrong. Go to the airport and watch the TSA do their job some time. Teenagers in particular are often watched and suspected of possible criminal activity. I would also be interested in their answer to this question: would a white person be safe walking in an all-black neighborhood?
If Trayvon had adoptive white parents he may never have been charged. That is a little comment about nurture and environment vs nature. Did a pregnant Mrs Martin take drugs? If s a political opponent these would be fair questions for someone who goes public.
Are the Martin´s now public figures? What kind of protection should they have that they would not allow Zimmerman?
I think they speak out of their ears or hats or whatever. Here is a real snark how much time has gone into making this a thing that divides America and gets them money and fame and some people acting as if they were credible before dropping them once usefulness is gone--that includes LSM.
This whole deal started after Martin finished talking with his friend Rachel on his cellphone and took it upon himself to confront Zimmerman with a sucker punch to the face breaking Zimmerman´s nose, rather then continuing on to the residence where it is claimed that Martin was a house guest.
Who knows what a 17 year old white boy would have done under similar circumstances. Since it was at night, raining, and if the white boy were wearing a hoodie, chances are Zimmerman would have also tried to check him out, as Zimmerman would not have known if he was black or white at first glance.
The bottom line is that both Martin and Zimmerman had a right to be on that sidewalk, obviously Martin should have continued on with his business and not perpetrated a criminal assault against Zimmerman, because of that Martin lost his life.
If I wasn´t white (and stupid) I wouldn´t have found myself between two groups of roughly 8ea of local inhabitants in Arlington VA while I took what looked like a time saving rout from the subway to my hotel doh!. Oddly enough I accepted my obvious outsider appearance and the reaction of those who saw that as their turf. Fortunately I was mistaken for a cop (had to be nobody is that stupid) and ran with it heckling the locals. Had them in stitches....the good kind and went on my way. I always felt had I accepted the role of victim I would have been accommodated. Of course I was profiled and never thought to be bent out of shape over it.
They´re right. If he was white, it wouldn´t have happened.
You know why? Because kids from the mainstream culture know that when they are ´followed´ to call the police, or run away, or look for shelter. If someone asks you, a visitor, what you are doing in their neighborhood, you explain your status and where you are staying.
You do NOT attack the individual in a fit of testosterone-fueled rage! You don´t act like a thug! If you are offended, suck it up! Maybe you´ll get out of it with a caution and a goodnight instead of a 9 mm slug between your ribs!
Gee, and just the other day people were talking about how restrained and pragmatic the Marti´s were, not becoming a part of the mindless mentality of the mobs. I guess they were just biding their time.
#7 - "If Trayvon had been a little more violent, he would have murdered Zimmerman and gotten away with it and then gone on to murder again and again until finally caught or killed.. We all owe Zimmerman a great debt."
Hmm... There are 6 or 7 "if´s" in that chain of hypotheses. If Trayvon had lived, it is also possible that a miracle might have occurred in his life. It´s also quite possible that this could embolden future hoods when they see that someone got in this much trouble for defending himself. It could actually lead to more crime and more deaths.
So no, I don´t think I owe the possibly overzealous Mr. Zimmerman anything, really. I just feel sorry for him and wish him the best. I also feel (yes feel) that it obscures the truth to engage in glorifying or demonizing either party, thereby doing a disservice to - well, to the country actually, as we seem to be in more trouble than ever and the last thing we need is polarization....
#64 - On the contrary - I think he was afraid for his life and if I were afraid for my life and had no other option, I would have shot the guy, too. I hooped and hollered when I learned the verdict.
The "overzealous" was in reference to following him and putting himself in a position to be jumped like that. If you´re going to be a hero, which I think he was, better to be a wise one. But I am as concerned about him and his family as anyone else.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The victim of a vicious knockout attack in New Jersey is speaking out for the first time. He was cold-cocked, and hit not just with a fist, but with a glove with hard plastic knuckles. Two of the four attackers are still on the run. "All of a sudden, I was trying to watch my back and these two came around front and punches my face," the victim said. The 36-year-old restaurant worker does not want his name or face on television, and who could blame him? He still has headaches from a concussion and six
Sears stock plummeted Wednesday as news came out that Edward Lampert, its stubborn billionaire chairman and CEO, had to surrender majority control of the 120-year-old big box retailer when investors in Lampert’s hedge fund pulled money out. With no end in sight for Lampert’s quixotic turnaround efforts, it’s time to question whether there’s any way to save Sears as long as he remains in charge. (Snip) Lampert began at Sears with the ill-fated $12 billion merger with Kmart in 2005. Sales have declined for 27 straight quarters and the company’s stock is down over 70% from its high in 2007.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has no system in place to prevent fraud when individuals apply for tax credits under Obamacare, according to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). The IG said in an audit released Tuesday that the IRS has no plan to manage, monitor, or mitigate fraud risk when processing premium tax credits available under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). “The ACA Program has not yet completed a fraud mitigation strategy,” the audit found. “It is important for the IRS to thoroughly consider fraud threats and risks that could impact new ACA systems.” Politico reports: The
Around 100,000 Americans successfully signed up for health insurance in November through the troubled federal online marketplace, HealthCare.gov, a person familiar with the preliminary data confirmed to ABC News. The figure reflects a surge in enrollment as software and hardware fixes to the site were made over the course of the month. In October, only 26,000 people could successfully enroll in Obamacare plans, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. "We´ve been working 24/7 to make improvements, and more consumers are successfully shopping online and enrolling in a health plan each week," Health and Human Services Secretary
NEW HAVEN >> The jail cell death last weekend of Yale University professor Samuel See, known as a brilliant writer and rising star in academia, has shaken up the tight-knit college community. Now adding to the mystery of his unexpected death are apparent connections between the online profiles of See and several escort service websites that include a cache of sexually explicit photos. At least four websites advertising male escort services included a phone number connected to See. The website Ryan Cochran Escort Services includes the same phone number listed on an order of protection filed against See in September.
For many Ann Arborites, Thanksgiving is a day devoted to giving thanks, spending time with family, eating turkey and watching the Detroit Lions. This year, retail giants want that to change. (Snip) The early openings change the game for retail giants looking to boost profits through aggressive holiday sales. It also means millions of retail employees in the U.S. are working on the holiday, and it poses the question to consumers: Is a bargain on a 70-inch television or an Apple iPad worth ditching Thanksgiving dinner? “You couldn’t pay me to stand in a line in the cold on Thanksgiving
Macy´s Inc and a slew of other U.S. retailers are opening on Thanksgiving for the first time ever in a bare-knuckled brawl for a bigger slice of overall holiday sales. But it might not be so easy to lure most Americans from their turkey and football - particularly if the weather is foul. Department store rivals Kohl´s Corp and J.C. Penney Co Inc led a string of Thanksgiving opening announcements after Macy´s said it would open its U.S. stores on the popular holiday, ending a 155-year tradition. Sales trends, survey results and an online "Save Thanksgiving" backlash suggest that shoppers
The captain of a Greenpeace ship released on bail after two months of detention in a Russian prison following an Arctic protest said he and his fellow activists remain in shock at their treatment. American Peter Willcox, who was also in charge of Greenpeace’s Rainbow Warrior when it was sunk in Auckland in 1985 by a bomb planted by the French intelligence service, said the organization again found itself in the crosshairs of a government bent on throttling the environmental group. “There is a similarity between the two cases,” with both the French and Russian governments targeting Greenpeace to prevent
DENVER - 9Wants to Know has learned federal investigators believe Colombian drug cartels have taken root within Colorado´s medical marijuana industry. On Thursday, federal agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency and Internal Revenue Service executed search warrants on several medical marijuana shops in Denver and Boulder. One of those shops is VIP Cannabis, a shop near Federal Boulevard and Alameda Avenue. Numerous calls into VIP Cannabis by 9Wants to Know have not been returned. While the warrants and other documents relating to the investigation are under court-ordered seal, sources spoke on the condition of anonymity to 9Wants to Know.
Minorities continue to offer a bulwark of support for the Affordable Care Act, according to the latest United Technologies/National Journal Congressional Connection Poll. But the deepening discrepancy between their views of Obamacare and their support for President Obama´s reelection last year shows skepticism about whether the big social-welfare program has worked touched even the White House´s most ardent supporters. A battery of questions about who benefits from the health care law, whether it should be repealed, and what´s to blame for its rocky rollout all reveal a portion of the electorate that´s far more favorable to the sweeping reform than
WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama´s signature health law has helped spur stronger economic growth by contributing to slower increases in healthcare prices and spending, the White House said on Wednesday. The White House´s assertion of the economic benefits of the law commonly called Obamacare runs counter to the views of many critics, who say it is raising insurance premiums and chilling job creation. (Snip) "The government´s non-partisan actuaries report this is the result of the terrible economy under President Obama, not his health care law," Boehner press secretary Brendan Buck said in an email.
The Obama administration has not always been great at selling its agenda, but the president´s adoption of the right-wing slur "Obamacare" as a prideful new name for the Affordable Care Act has been a notable exception. We often think the proper response to being called a dirty name is to object. That´s a good first step, but in the long term, the judo approach is constructive -- hurl the power being used against you back to your opponent. For example, in 1968 William F. Buckley could offend Gore Vidal by calling him a "queer" on television. Today, the line would
The question all week long was this: Who are you going to believe, an illegal alien or the president of the United States of America? Obviously, if it’s a president who once went by an alias, Barry Soetoro, you go with Uncle Omar, 100 percent, no questions asked. And so it was that the White House finally admitted to another, uh, misstatement — despite previous denials, Barack/Barry did sleep on his beloved Uncle Omar’s couch in Cambridge when he first moved here to attend Harvard Law School (speaking of which, we’re still waiting to see the president’s grades and his LSAT scores). But the
How do you get your arms around the catastrophe known as Obamacare? Is it even possible? At this point, I’m not sure it is. The list of individual disasters which threaten to ruin one-sixth of the U.S. economy and what has been, up until now, the best healthcare system in the world is exhaustive, and exhausting. The examples I will identify here barely scratch the surface. First but by no means foremost, we have the supposedly new and improved HealthCare.gov. Except it’s not, even the visible part. Stories still abound of people still failing to get in or to get through the enrollment
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers. Although they are statistically among the safest on the road, the number of older drivers is increasing dramatically — and with it, that group´s numbers of injuries and deaths. Since 2003, the population of older adults, defined as age 65 and older, has increased by 20% and the number of licensed older drivers increased by 21% to 35 million in 2012, according to NHTSA. Last year, NHTSA reported that 5,560 people older than 65 died and 214,000 were injured
A veteran Washington adviser who has worked for four Presidents on both sides of the political aisle said that the stunning Government Accountability Report report that found President Barack Obama has not had a one-on-one meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius since the passage of Obamacare over three years ago is an indictment of the entire White House operation and shows that the Obama administration has bordered on "malfeasance." "I have no doubt the White House is right, that Secretary Sebelius was in several group meetings with the president about health care," Gergen caveated, "but the whole
President Barack Obama’s Facebook page on Saturday posted a message honoring the dead from Pearl Harbor—accompanied by a picture of Obama descending the stairs next to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The picture barely fits the name of the Arizona Memorial so it can frame Obama in the foreground. The post´s statement reads: Today, with solemn pride and reverence, let us remember those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor, acknowledge everyone who carried their legacy forward, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideals for which they served. President Obama The Obama Administration´s current shipbuilding plan shrinks the size of
Barack Obama did not tell the whole story this autumn when he tried to make the case that Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical weapons attack near Damascus on 21 August. In some instances, he omitted important intelligence, and in others he presented assumptions as facts. Most significant, he failed to acknowledge something known to the US intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the country’s civil war with access to sarin, the nerve agent that a UN study concluded – without assessing responsibility – had been used in the rocket attack. In the months before the attack,
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the hapless, goalpost-shifting so-called "architect" of Obamacare, told Fox News´ Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that President Barack Obama´s promise "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was absolutely true--with one important caveat: if you like your doctor, "you can pay for it." Wallace grilled Dr. Emanuel, challenging his false claims that California´s enrollment was keeping pace with the percentage of the young population necessary to keep the system afloat, and pointing out that the president´s promise on doctors would collapse once people lost their insurance or their
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I
The U.S. isn´t called "America the Beautiful" for nothing. Each year, millions of tourists come from home and abroad to see the country´s majestic landscape and iconic sites, from the Grand Canyon to the Statue of Liberty. But there are also cool, quirky attractions, like Vermont´s Ben & Jerry´s Factory and Tennessee´s Graceland, the former home of Rock and Roll King Elvis Presley. From California to New York and everywhere in between, the country is chock-full of incredible attractions that keep luring in visitors. Here are the best tourist attractions in every state.
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry opened her program over the weekend with a commentary about the Affordable Care Act’s colloquial moniker: “Obamacare.” She said that the word was originally created as a “derogatory term,” designed by white men as a way to delegitimize President Barack Obama and his achievement. However, she said that the term will soon be synonymous with all of Obama’s accomplishments and she urged her audience to use the term with pride. “I want to talk today about a controversial word. It’s a word that has been with us for years, and like it or not, it’s indelibly
Call me Grinch, call me Scrooge. Call me Lord Voldemort of the Yuletide. None could be worse than sending me a holiday card with glossy photographs of your lovely, smiling family. My wife, Emily, and I place your cards like trophies on our shelves, continuing an old-school practice that began about 175 years ago as a way of maintaining relationships as families and friends moved far and wide. Today’s cards may appear more personalized — with photos of spouses, kids and pets, and distribution lists much smaller than a sprawling collection of Facebook friends. But when I flip over the photo
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a last minute decision not to participate in a memorial service for the late South African President Nelson Mandela, despite having notified the South African government that he would attend the event. The decision was made in light of the high transportation costs resulting from the short notice of the trip and the security required for the prime minister in Johannesburg. The Prime Minister’s Office found that the trip would have cost roughly 7 million shekels ($2.4 million) – 2.8 million shekels for chartering a private El Al plane and a further 3.2 million shekels for
