Editorial: CPS test scores
plunge as reality intrudes

Chicago Tribune, by Staff

Chicago Public Schools officials revealed Tuesday that only 52.5 percent of the district´s elementary students met or exceeded state academic standards in the last school year. That´s a nearly 22-percentage-point plunge from a year earlier. Students didn´t suddenly get less intelligent. They were not doing as well in the past as everyone was led to believe. The state had dumbed down the tests and lowered cut scores to avoid sanctions from the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Educators fed parents an illusion that the vast majority of Illinois elementary students

They were at the bottom when Arne Duncan was the Superintendent of the schools. Guess that is why Obama put him in charge of the Dept. of Education so he could bring all the schools down to their level.

only 52.5 percent of the district´s elementary students met or exceeded state academic standards (snip) Students didn´t suddenly get less intelligent (snip) The current results show the achievement gap between minority and white students remains wide, and in some cases even wider than in past years.

How come 47.5% are succeeding? Figure that out and then apply it to the rest.

#3, not really Rahm´s fault. He is actually trying to save money, close failing schools, etc.

#2, Arne was an accomplished basketball player (compared to the average person) and Obama needed someone else to play hoops with.

What happened to the100million Annenberg Grant for the Chicago schools run by Obama and Education Ptofessor aka Domestic Terrorist Bill Ayres?
What better way to destroy a society from within than destroy the public education system and create generations of illiterates that can be easily manipulated?
The destruction of the public education system and destruction of black family are the direct result of the domestic terrorist Ayers and his group to further polarize and create a war within.
Elite private school AA Obama is their standard bearer - The Divider in Chief whose first act was to try to withdraw vouchers from poor DC children that enabled them to go to Sidwell Frends with HIS children and not DC schools.
Black politicians and union teachers send their children to private schools - and inflict the public schools on the Trayvons.

One of the main things that causes students to fall behind is the curriculum. The time spent on things other than the basics at the lower grade levels affects the children´s ability to retain the important information. When you jump from basic arithmetic and reading to spend time talking about Rachel´s two mommies and practice putting condoms on cucumbers kids get off track.

I´d love to see all schools spend first thru third grade on the basics. Make sure the kids can read, write, and do arithmetic. Then when they´re in 4th grade add science and history. That´s how my generation was taught and by the end of third grade every child could read.

The schools need to get out of the social engineering business and back to the business of teaching children. Too much time is wasted on indoctrination.

while perusing the Annenberg Foundation articles on "social engineering" projects they funded in the chicago public schools...i found a great one from 2012 which discusses how a policy of eliminating remedial 9th math classes and mandating a "algebra for all" policy resulted in lower test scores for everyone, including the academically gifted...my guess is the classes needed to be dumbed down to allow the most kids to make it through, resulting in the brightest kids NOT getting a rigorously educated in algebra.

this is a mini-example of what is happening with the "everyone needs to go to college".
college will/is being dumbed down.

The 20-page ordinance, expected to be introduced at a City Council meeting, would license ride-sharing companies as “transportation network providers” and require them to pay an annual, $25,000 fee, plus $25 per driver. UberX, Lyft, SideCar and other ride-sharing companies that allow drivers to offer rides in their personal vehicles to passengers who order them on their smartphones also would be required to pay the city’s $3.50 a day per vehicle ground transportation

Illinois rolled out its new, information-chocked school report card recently and provided an easy-to-understand figure of how many Illinois high school graduates are ready to go to college. Brace yourself: It´s only 46 percent. That, the state says, pegs how students have a reasonable chance at college success, based on their ACT scores. You don´t need to have nailed a perfect 36 on the ACT to know that means a little more than half of high school grads aren´t ready to do college-level work.
