Danger Ahead for Democrats:
The Passion Gap

National Journal, by Ronald Brownstein

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 7/13/2013 4:54:00 AM

LOUISVILLE, Colo.—William Kinne likes Colorado’s new gun-control law that includes universal background checks and limits on ammunition sales, and he is also glad the state approved legislation this spring establishing civil unions for gay couples. His wife, Rachel, isn’t enthusiastic about either idea. William, a graduate student at the nearby University of Colorado (Boulder), finds the gun-control law common sense. “There needs to be at least as much regulation and training as there is to operate a motor vehicle,” he says. Responds Rachel: “If people want guns, they are going to find them.”

What poor reasoning - trying to compare cars to guns. We aren´t playing "bumper cars". If a riot was like the NFL draft, this fellow would likely be gone in the first round.

WASHINGTON — Lots of conservative lawmakers hate Obamacare. Rep. Louie Gohmert is putting his money where his mouth is. The Tyler Republican gave up his health insurance for 2014, asserting that the president’s signature health care law, the Affordable Care Act, has made coverage too expensive. “Other people are going to see what I did when I looked into health insurance for my wife and me: that the deductible rate, it doubled, about $3,000 to $6,000, and our policy was going to go from about $300 to about $1,500 a month,” he said during a recent radio interview with Trey Graham, a

The Obama administration has offered to send an envoy to North Korea to secure the release of American missionary Kenneth Bae after he appeared in front of reporters urging action from Washington, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday. "We hope this decision by DPRK authorities to allow Kenneth Bae to meet with reporters signals their willingness to release him," an administration official told the newspaper. Robert King, the U.S. special envoy for North Korea, had planned to visit North Korea in late August to discuss Bae´s release, but Pyongyang withdrew its invitation at the last minute, accusing the United States of hostility.

Congress is more unpopular than ever, but some Members are better than its reputation. One of them is Tom Coburn, the Oklahoma Republican who announced on Friday that he´ll leave the Senate at the end of this year. (Snip) Mr. Coburn´s tenure on Capitol Hill has been notable for his convictions on behalf of limited government combined with a determination to do more than grandstand. He and his staff ground out reports that exposed the titanic amount of misspent government money, most recently on fraud in the Social Security disability program. HOUSTON — The Mostyn Law Firm and its attorneys are spending a small fortune to ensure Texas Sen. Wendy Davis´ political ambitions come to fruition. The most recent contribution came on Dec. 31, with the Mostyn Law Firm ringing in the New Year by donating $1 million to the Texas Victory Committee -- a joint project of Wendy R. Davis for Governor and Battleground Texas, according to the Texas Ethics Commission. Democrats Still Paying the

The 2010 midterm elections could not have gone much worse for Democrats. Not only did the party lose control of the House of Representatives and six seats in the Senate, the GOP picked up just shy of 700 state legislative seats, controlling 56 of the 99 chambers throughout the country. Adding to their gains in the states, Republicans also picked up six governorships in 2010, cementing their advantage. But it wasn´t just the breadth of Democratic losses that made them so damaging for the party; it was the timing. Following the 2010 census, the nation´s congressional districts were reapportioned, and so

New York governor Andrew Cuomo, whose desire to be the Democratic nominee for president of these United States is embarrassingly palpable, has decided that those who do not share his views on abortion (Hooray!), scary-looking firearms (Horrors!), and the various political demands attached to organized homosexuality (Hand on heart!) are untouchables — “They have no place in the state of New York,” he says, “because that’s not who New Yorkers are.” The governor needs to meet some New Yorkers. Before moving on to the moral and political probity of the governor’s statement, first consider his facts and logic: It must

Iran can now use the money to build the bomb the mullahs intend to use to intimidate and control the Middle East. “The iceberg of sanctions against Iran is melting,” the director of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization announced on Tehran television. Has there ever been a more meteoric rise to national political prominence than that of Wendy Davis? A year ago Davis was so obscure a Democratic Texas state senator that even savvy liberal Beltway pundits couldn’t have picked out of a police lineup. But her June 25 filibuster of a bill limiting late-term abortions and imposing more rigorous safety standards on clinics catapulted her to superstardom in the national liberal media. The legislation she managed to stop that day eventually passed (and has, despite the expectations of many liberals, largely survived judicial scrutiny) but Davis’s stand had already made her

The movie “Lone Survivor” didn’t get any Oscar nominations, but perhaps it should’ve been nominated for Most Unlikely Politically Incorrect Picture of the Year. It’s based on the true story of a mission in Afghanistan that goes disastrously wrong. A four-man team of Navy SEALs hunting down a Taliban commander is stumbled upon by a couple of goatherds in the mountains of Kunar province. Deciding to let them go, even though it will compromise them, the SEALs are subsequently outnumbered in a fierce firefight. Three are killed, and a Chinook helicopter attempting to relieve them is downed, killing another 16 Americans.

The world’s richest 85 people control the same amount of wealth as the total held by half the world’s population, according to a report issued today by the British-based anti-poverty charity Oxfam. The means the world’s poorest 3,550,000,000 (3.55 billion) people must live on what the richest 85 possess. Another way to look at it: Each of the wealthiest 85 Earthlings has access to the resources available to about 42 million of the world’s poor, a population equal to the total number of people living in Canada, with those all those from Kentucky and Kansas tossed in.
