Faith Lights Life
National Review, by George Weigel

Original Article

Posted By:mitzi, 7/12/2013 11:29:12 AM

By happy coincidence, Pope Francis’s first encyclical, Lumen Fidei (The Light of Faith), appeared at the same time as the July issue of the monthly prayer book Magnificat, which offers as a meditation this bracing interview with the inimitable Walker Percy, the Pelican State’s analogue to G. K. Chesterton: Q. What kind of Catholic are you — a dogmatic Catholic or an open-minded Catholic? A. I don’t know what that means. Do you mean do I believe the dogma that the Catholic Church proposes for belief?

Comments:
It´s a long article. It prints out to 9 pages. Lumen Fidei is available as a free download at various places, one is vatican dot va. It´s well worth taking the time to download and read.

Its stunning!
´´Thus when faith dies — when the light of faith flickers — “all other lights begin to dim.” Autonomous reason turns out to be self-cannibalizing. Athens without Jerusalem decays into Berkeley (or, if you like, the New York Times editorial board); reason, no longer confident of its capacity to grasp and discern truths in reality, loses its tether to Things As They Are.´´

Catholics and non Catholics seldom grasp how insightful an encyclical can be for all.

Great stuff. Great post.

The New York Police Department´s Sergeants Benevolent Association (SBA) will join Minnesota police unions´ lawsuit against NFL gun ban. Mullins added: "The NFL is telling us that highly trained law enforcement officers shouldn´t be allowed to enter stadiums with their guns." ABC News´s Jonathan Karl mocked Sen. Ted Cruz´s (R-TX) belief that Obamacare could be repealed while President Barack Obama is in office if the law and the president should get even more unpopular. Cruz, who tried to defund the Obamacare law even before the disastrous rollout and the multiple waivers that have since been granted, said he believed "every single word" of the law could be repealed in an interview that aired on ABC´s This Week on Sunday. When Karl said that it was safe to assume that the law cannot be repealed while Obama was in office, Cruz did

Hey, why am I reading in the New York Post about a group called American Atheists? I mean, I was born in 1947 and was an atheist by the time I was seven. I was a long-term predecessor to these ingrates. The difference between me and the clowns at American Atheists is that I have always had respect for the religious. I feel they are more a part of the fabric of this country than I am, and that I have no right to belittle their beliefs. In fact I wish I could share in their faith.

And I understand why the good people of Georgia, Estonia and other Democracy-minded countries take exception to this sort of Iron Curtain saber-rattling. But I just cannot understand why it is that President Barack Obama is so upset about it. After all, Putin understandably believes in Russian exceptionalism. The Center for Arizona Policy (CAP) is Arizona´s leading pro-life, pro-family organization. As the Huffington Post pointed out, the day after Brewer vetoed Arizona’s Religious Freedom Law (SB 1062), the state House passed the Women’s Health Protection Act (HB

The Kentucky senator received 31 percent, far ahead of second place Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who received 11 percent. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson finished third with 9 percent, ahead of New Jersey Gov. One of the most seismic changes in American politics over the last decade has been the emergence of a sharp generational split among the electorate. The Democratic Party owes its success in the last two presidential elections almost entirely to overwhelming support among the very young, which has overcome continued conservatism among older voters. The Pew Research Institute has dominated the field of exploring the ideological cleavages among different generations. And its latest survey shows again how the liberalism of the youngest voting cohort, millennials, remains firm, and likely to continue to recast the electorate. A few charts from the survey

Barack Obama´s parents were "married in name only," according to David Maraniss´s 2012 Barack Obama: The Story. But since definitions of an "in name only" marriage vary, such as "a marriage of convenience" or "a sexless marriage," and Maraniss failed to explain his claim, it is unclear what he was implying. Therefore, Obama´s oft-told nativity story must be searched for the full implications of Obama´s parents´ "in name only" marriage. The most dangerous parts of a flight are takeoff and landing. Rarely do incidents happen when a plane is cruising seven miles above the earth. So the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jet well into its flight Saturday morning over the South China Sea has led aviation experts to assume that whatever happened was quick and left the pilots no time to place a distress call. Hi, everybody. This week, I traveled to New England, where I was joined by four governors who are working to raise the minimum wage in each of their states. And they’ve also joined me in calling on Congress to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour. Because it would give nearly 800,000 Americans in their states a raise — and lift wages for about 28 million across the country. So these governors aren’t waiting for Congress to make up its mind. And in my State of the Union Address, I asked America’s business leaders to go ahead and do what they could to raise their employees’ wages, too.
