Hilarious (And Terrifying):
Drunk College Kids Know Almost
Nothing About Independence Day

How far has July 4th strayed from its original celebration of America’s independence? To find out, prank YouTube channel whatever traveled to Isla Vista, California to ask some partying college students what they know about the history of the holiday. The results were inevitably both hysterical and disturbing, recalling an even less-informed version of the Funny or Die classic “Drunk History” (now a new series on Comedy Central). These kids don’t know why we celebrate the 4th of July, who America gained independence from or what year it happened.

Yet they vote

Over the last several years, I have conducted my own unscientific poll of people standing on the other side of the gas pump. (My kids will verify that I´ll talk to anybody). Questions like "Who did we fight in WWII? Who´s the president of the United States? The Veep? the Secretary of State? Who is our US senators? It´s very distressing to find out what people don´t know.

Conduct your own poll. Start with "what do you do for a living?" People identify with their job. Then ask them the hard questions.

The past two weeks Rush Limbaugh has been discussing this. Every other holiday is called by its name - Memorial Day, Veterans Day, etc. Independence Day is commonly known as July 4 but seldom as Independence Day... a vast left wing conspiracy? Schools need to grade on citizenship, honor, valor, leadership as well as cursive and spelling. At one time they did...then government stepped in

As my wife is fond of saying re the son and heir, "he´s the one who´s picking out your nursing home." I think these kid´s parents have some really BIG problems in the years ahead. Find a good lawyer and set up an airtight trust before you wander off to your dotage.

Those UCSB children are in the top 10% of all high schoolers in California (that´s what you need to be to get in), and likely higher than that for most as it´s a very desirable university campus (right on the ocean) just north of Santa Barbara.,

Well, I can´t get the audio to come up on the video, so forgive me for posting before being able to hear it, but I think this is on topic. I was so upset watching the Macy´s Fourth of July Fireworks show on TV last night: I think there was ONE patriotic song in the whole several hour show. The rest was shake your booty rock star stuff. My 91 year old mother was looking forward to it; if she watched it, I can only imagine her dismay. For her sake, I hope she went to bed early. As I texted my brother, "Es ist vollbracht."

Local school district hired a just out of college girl with a teaching degree from "The University of Texas". I just happened to catch her in the local newspaper office. Keep in mind this girl was hired to teach American History and "Government". Started off slow asking her about her educational background and some of the community activities she participated in while at "The University". Not impressive. Asked her what she thought was the most influential branch of the federal government. Her answer? The Supreme Court because they can tell all the others what to do and they have to do it because it is the law. Wow....this is what is coming out of the teaching colleges and university´s to teach. Frightening....doesn´t even come close...... I thought...okay let´s see what she knows about American History. Asked her about WWII she said was that the one where the Chinese, no Asian people were fighting? The next thing out of her mouth was "that was before JFK?" Then she laughed and said "no wait that was the one with Germany right?". Yikes...This is what you get when you coddle them, tell them their are special (when they aren´t) and everybody gets a blue ribbon. Need to take back the education system..bring it back to local control. Get it out of the hands of the federal socialist brainwashing programs and get back to Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.

Forget voter ID cards. Let´s get them to take a 3 question test (in English) before they´re allowed to vote. If they don´t know what is celebrated on the 4th of July, the three branches of government, and the name of the supreme law of the land they should not be able to help choose governmental leadership in the United States of America.

I´m the father of two -- 29 and 25. One has a law degree from an Ivy, the other has a Master´s from a top 20 state college. Both went to one of the best high schools in Connecticut, a state with the best public schools in America. Neither were exposed to American history in high school or college; it wasn´t a requirement.. One is an expert in Russian history but American history? Nah, who needs it? The other took no history classes at all. I know the kids in the video are drunk and hamming it up for the cameras but the reality is, they´re representative of their generation. Shame on us for allowing kids to go to high school and college without studying American history.

We´re no history experts, but what we do know, we started imparting to our kids early on, because it was pretty obvious the schools wouldn´t do it.

Every Independence Day, we made a tradition of watching "1776." It´s entertainment, but there were nuggets of information, too. We moved on to books about American history, and watching television documentaries. We were talking about it recently, and even one of the kids who majored in political science had very little American History.

#9, your account is sad and terrifying. The girl didn´t even know when WWII was fought?
It´s hard for those of us who grew up surrounded by war veterans to think that kids today are this uninformed. And she´s going to teach history?!

David McCollough made some very honest and devastating comments about the dim bulbs he comes across as he visits America´s elite campuses. I watched to see if the media would pick up his criticism of American public education. He stated very emphatically that there should be no "education" major if you wish to become a teacher. The degree should represent the subject to be taught.

My veteran´s group passes out FLAG books to 6th grade students every year in my town. We talk to the kids, answer their questions and tell them a bit about veterans...they usually ask if we killed somebody...we ask them about WWI, WWII, Korea, the Desert wars and who we fought. I was amazed that few knew who we fought in WWII. When informed that it was Japan and Germany they appeared stunned because their families owned Toyota´s, had Sony TV´s, Sako watches, playstations, etc...when did they have time to fight us??? The teachers are not much sharper...Is this generation worth the blood, the sacrifice, the suffering??? Just what will they fight for?

I spent some time time in Europe recently. While in Italy spent considerable time catching up on things. Seem even though that ou try has been over run as much as Poland even they are concerned by the onslaught of new er immigrants because they refuse to mix and become part of the culture. In order to preserve their History and Western Civ they force the students to study it in schools along with Art. Where America has gone wrong is they have systematically removed these very requirements. We are doomed.

Media and particularly cable news has never been as polarized as it is today. It’s also never been tilted more towards opinion and less toward objective reporting of hard news. As a result, trust in media has fallen to an all-time low. Reporters in particular are looked upon as dishonest brokers in the business, with Gallup showing only 20 percent of those polled finding journalists honest and ethical (that’s 65 percent lower than nurses, 50 percent lower than doctors and engineers). Solid investigative reporters are simply in short supply and demand. Why? Because with opinion programming so much cheaper to produce
