The Press and Dr. Faustus
National Review Online, by Victor Davis Hanson

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 7/4/2013 5:19:42 AM

In the old Dr. Faustus story, a young scholar bargains away his soul to the devil for promises of obtaining almost anything he wants. The American media has done much the same thing with the Obama administration. In return for empowering a fellow liberal, the press gave up its traditional adversarial relationship with the president. But after five years of basking in a shared progressive agenda, the tab for such ecstasy has come due, and now the media is lamenting that it has lost its soul. At first, the loss of independence seemed like a minor sacrifice.

Got "The Center Holds" out of our library, took one look and returned it-------the thesis is that Obama is STILL a success! Do NOT count on the Dems giving up (and stop making excuses) for this guy.......watched, for the H--- of it, Brian Williams interview the two First Ladies together on the job of being lst Lady---Laura bush got MAYBE two sentences and the rest was the glorious Michelle, fortunately NOT wearing the $1,245 dress she departed Air Force 1 from in Senegal.

The MSM is now just another tabloid singing the praises of celebrities; the only difference between their coverage of the Obama´s and the Kardashians is they created the Obama´s and reality TV created the Kardashian´s. I have never watched the latter and hit the remote everytime Obama gets up to read his teleprompter. He is a weak President and their slobbering coverage of him and his wife is disgusting and shows a weakness in them.

VDH of course is spot on and the Faust analogy is perfect, but the fact remains that the MSM is so heavily invested in Obama that they will never turn on him no matter what. Too much white guilt to ever tell the truth about a black president.

VDH did a particularly good job of reminding readers of the serial sins of this Administration and its leader.

Our poor media did not even get five years of adulation before Obama called in their souls.

Good line, but it still baffles me that the entire left wing MSM didn´t spot what a pathological liar he is when the rest of us saw it so clearly.

How he treated the people who trusted him and how they forgave him time after time reminds me of two things: Wives who won´t press charges against their battering husbands, and victims of the Stockholm Syndrome.

Still, it´s good to know that Faustus and the Press are on their way to at least a temporary, if not permanent separation. A divorce may be unrealistic at this point, but maybe when the Press can no longer lives with their tattered consciences, they will file.

The media have not changed under Obama. They just quit caring about being exposed. They have shown their open hostility toward conservatives and especially the Tea Party, who committed the mortal sin of rising up against Obama, Big Government, and ultimately the media themselves. They have ABCCBSNBCCNNMSNBC. We have FOX, Breitbart, Drudge, Lucianne and Ted Cruz. We can make our voices heard.

“Hello, he lied.” is the old joke that could’ve been inspired by first mulatto president Barack Hussein Obama. Concealing his past from Day One five years ago was all the evidence needed to demonstrate just how little he respects the word “truth,” much less the concept of it.

Each of BHO’s unbelievable (i.e. not to be believed) apologists and sycophants should’ve been hard-wired to their own polygraph (i.e. lie detector) machines throughout the extent of his administration. In so doing, something even vaguely resembling the truth might eventually have risen to the surface.

I honestly believe that the MSM no longer cares about being credible as long as the machinations to maintain a liberal agenda are kept in place. The analogy of Faust can only be applicable if the media do indeed pay a heavy price for their prostituting for the democrat party. Despite VDH´s assertion I am not convinced that the "debt" will ever be payed.

The brilliant VDH does it again! Fabulous column and a perfect comparison of what the press has done. Of course, they can never admit it, because if they do admit that they ignore the scandals of the people they like, we all know where that goes.

Back to another president they covered for, too. Questions like: “Why does Al Queda member and terrorist Jose Padilla look just like John Doe #2? Was Timothy McVeigh really working alone?” “What really happened at Waco?” “What about that guy Vince Foster?” “Was Bill Clinton really a rapist? Did other women accuse him of rape?” (The answer to that is ‘Yes,’ by the way.) “What was the deal with that Whitewater?” “What about….” Pick your scandals and you know what that means. It goes to their next choice to coronate for President and if they are stopped (as they must be) what will happen to Hillary?

If there’s no one to protect her from the real questions, she goes down….

They, not she, must be stopped. If they are stopped, this country can be saved. If not, I don’t hold out much hope. The press will destroy us all…along with themselves.

Face it. Conservatives are up against a hostile media and that won´t change anytime soon. They are bullies who never lose the appetite to try and take our lunch money. Until you step up and confront them, they will never change. They are products of the indoctrination divas in our high schools, colleges and universities. They openly harrass a student who espouses conservative ideas. The job as they see it is to rewrite history and make sure each of their students are well versed in the hate America, everything bad is our fault mentality. Until these folks are exposed and fired, young people will graduate these institutions ignorant of our history and hostile to the founders. Best thing a conservative can do for their children is send them to a school that teaches history and does not rewrite it with a progressive slant. Don´t put your money where their mouth is. What is the point in sending your children to an Ivy League school or even your alma mater when they come home believing the hyper progressive ideology they were spoon fed. Our kids are being indoctrinated from cradle to the grave through education, media, and entertainment. This has to stop.

The bulk of the media has been taken over, infiltrated, by liberals/progressives for the sole purpose of advancing their agenda. They are no longer a voice exposing tyranny in government that the Founders envisioned. They are the voice of propaganda for the power-hungry tyrants. Unfortunately our education system suffers from the same infiltration and, like the "green energy" industry, has become a place where huge amounts of taxpayer money goes to those who work to promote progressivism. We have lost this once-great nation, just as all of the great civilizations throughout history fell due to their own corruption and decadence.

At one time it was hoped that the youth of the country would demand a life of freedom and liberty, but no more. If Leftism/Liberalism continues to dominate the culture, the youth of America will grow up as serfs. Pathetic that they have no clue what is in store for them.

Nice article. But what do you expect from people who are writing the gardening news one day and politics the next? Journalists have no substantive knowledge unless they develop it independently or are trained by pol sci depts (e.g. George Will) rather than J-schools. J-schools acculturate them to be liberals and they go off on their merry little way. Hint: the vast majority have never heard of Dr. Faustus, Christopher Marlowe, Goethe, or Thomas Mann.

Communist goals via the 1958 Naked Communist:

15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.
17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers´ associations. Put the party line in textbooks.
20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policymaking positions.
21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.
25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

That´s good enough but there´s much more.

The current media went whole hog for Obozo for two primary reasons. One, he is just as liberal (read communist) at they are and 2. he is black. That makes, it their eyes, a perfect match. And even though they have had a small burp at what has happened to AP, they are never going to go full force against Obozo like they did to Busch. They´ve made their bed and are determined to lie in it.

Obama is the first almost-black president and a far, far left liberal. He CAN NOT be allowed to fail no matter how incompetent he is. The press will carry his water and attempt to hide his many blunders until they all collapse, and collapse they will. These "news" organizations were in financial trouble before obama was elected. Their only hope in the world is some sort of stimulus bailout from the obama administration because they will never sell enough of their garbage to the general public again to be able to stay afloat.

JournoList must be overwhelmed in trying to intercept attack-obama articles these days because the attacks are coming nonstop from all directions. The MSM will die embarrassed and broke.

Unfortunately, repubics watched this and didn´t fight back.

Double Bravo #27 Chicoden, and #35 Lencu !!!
We are all on the same anti Communist page.
And it IS all about Communism. First, go to Mark Skousen´s THE NAKED COMMUNIST, and look at his list of 50 signs of Communism,
several recited above, thank you. It´s on Wikipedia, easy to find, print and send out. The ultimate rule of Communist infiltration, is Stealth. The Rule of Silence is what we suffer. A few months ago, Allen West announced there were sometning like 80 Communists in Congress.
The MSM TV commies ignored it. No news. But here is the big one, Hollywood, communist filled Hollywood is the easiest one to bust.
In over sixty years, Hollywood´s controllers
have not allowed ONE single film to be made on the ruthless rule of Stalinist Soviet prison slavery. Not one single film, while at the same time, making HUNDREDS of Nazi German films, hundreds of anti Hitler films. What´s worse, nothing about Hitler being a damned socialist first! All that filmogoers are permitted to learn about is that Nazi Germans were brutal anti semitic kilers. Nothing about Germany´s dictatorial socialist structure that mirrored Stalin and his socialist USSR communist structure.
It´s wake up time. Now we have to recognize
the political Islamist killers, too, also being sliently protected by Nobama and his
collectivist mistress, Diane Sawyers.

Our media is owned by 70+ rich New York families who supported Bolshevism for the last one hundred years. Like Faust they have sold their souls to the devil. They hate America.
in 1917, they send Leon Trotsky (Lev Davidovich Bronstein) to Russia in a boat from New York with millions in gold bars to fan the Bolshevik Revolution. They are still fighting the Imperial Russian Czars and they hate Richard Nixon for exposing Alger Hiss as a GRU spy.
They have said that Barry "is the one we have been waiting" to impose a Leninist Social Justice system.

The Socialist/Marxist Internationale seeks to eliminate private property (now through the redistribution of wealth to the non-working classes), destroy the family ( now through the promotion of homosexuality), and religion. The most efficient way to achieve this is through the mass media, and Commies have known it for 100 years. Baracka Hussein Obama is a dream come true for them. A president of the USA that was raised a Muslim and a Communist and will have no qualms in sowing our destruction.

WASHINGTON - Election-year memo to Democratic candidates: Don´t talk about the economic recovery. It´s a political loser. So say Democratic strategists in a blunt declaration that such talk skips over "how much trouble people are in, and doesn´t convince them that policymakers really understand or are even focusing on the problems they continue to face." In addition, Stan Greenberg, James Carville and others wrote that in head-to-head polling tests the mere mention of the word "recovery" is trumped by a Republican assertion that the Obama administration has had six years to get the economy moving and its policies haven´t worked. Bearing a small American flag on its tail, the aircraft was parked in a highly visible section of Mehrabad Airport in Tehran. Saying they can no longer ignore the rising prices of health care, some of the most influential medical groups in the nation are recommending that doctors weigh the costs, not just the effectiveness of treatments, as they make decisions about patient care. The shift, little noticed outside the medical establishment but already controversial inside it, suggests that doctors are starting to redefine their roles, from being concerned exclusively about individual patients to exerting influence on how health care dollars are spent. “We understand that we doctors should be and are stewards of the larger society as well as of the patient in

The captain of a ferry that sank off the coast of South Korea Wednesday, leaving nearly 300 people missing, is under investigation as a possible criminal and was one of the first people to escape the doomed vessel, Coast Guard officials said. Lee Joon-seok, 69, left the ferry on a lifeboat 32 minutes after reporting an accident, officials said. The captain appeared on Korean television today, his face covered by a gray hoodie. “I am really sorry and deeply ashamed,” he said, as he was being questioned at the Mokpo Coast Guard Office. It´s unclear which of his actions could be considered criminal.

Soon after the tea party era began in Congress in 2011, President Obama and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan each released their budgets, proposing how much the government should tax and spend over the rest of the decade. Three years into that budget showdown, Mr. Ryan and his Republican colleagues are winning. Government spending has slowed, and Mr. Obama’s plans for higher taxes and higher spending have fallen by the wayside. “The discretionary spending has in fact been driven by Republicans post-2010 clamping down,” said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former director of the Congressional Budget Office who is now president of the

Remember when Lois Lerner, in answering a planted question at an American Bar Association conference, admitted the IRS had targeted conservative groups but tried to pass it off as the work of rogue agents — “our line people in Cincinnati”? Today we know there were indeed federal agents involved. But they weren’t rogue, and they weren’t confined to IRS workers in Cincinnati. Thanks to a Freedom of Information request by Judicial Watch, we now have an e-mail Lerner sent to colleagues noting the Department of Justice was looking into criminal prosecutions of these tax-exempt groups. We know something else, too. These investigations

The first step is admitting… It was a simple question to someone accustomed to much tougher ones: What was her proudest achievement as secretary of state? But for a moment, Hillary Rodham Clinton, appearing recently before a friendly audience at a women’s forum in Manhattan, seemed flustered.(Snip)So…no definitive successes and some clear-cut failures. And that’s the generous New York Times assessment. The Democrat fantasy story about Mrs. Clinton paints her as strong and accomplished on her own. In reality, this is a woman who is professionally defined almost entirely by two men in her life, both of whom happen to have

For Obamacare, What Counts As Success?

Ezra Klein, in his new capacity as one of the impresarios behind Vox, has written a pair of attention-grabbing posts — here, and then here — defending the proposition that Obamacare has, in some sense, “won,” and that conservatives who can’t come to terms with that victory can’t come to terms with reality itself. Reading them, it struck me that this argument would benefit from laying down some specific markers for the near future, because Klein seems to move back and forth between two definitions of success. At times, as when he writes that Obamacare “has won its survival” and

What would a Mitch

It’s no secret that Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) don’t like one another. They battle regularly over legislation and their Senate floor fights over arcane-but-important rules have become must-see entertainment for senatorial insiders. According to aides in both parties, the two leaders have not had a one-on-one sitdown to discuss legislation (or anything else) since late last year. Nowadays, all business is conducted on the phone or in brief discussions on the Senate floor. Part of that feud is political – Democrats targeted McConnell in 2008, Republicans targeted Reid in 2010, Democrats

Jews have reportedly been told to ´register´ with pro-Russian forces in the east Ukrainian city of Donetsk. They were also told they would need to provide a list of property they own as well as being ordered to pay a fee or face the threat of deportation. U.S. officials in Washington say leaflets bearing the chilling order have recently appeared in the city amid pro and anti-Russian protests as tensions rise in the area. It comes after Jews leaving a synagogue in the city of Donetsk were reportedly told they had to ´register´ with Ukranians trying to make the city part of Russia.United

Like him or hate him, there is no disputing that Rush Limbaugh’s very special brand of mixing right-wing politics with his flare for entertainment has produced one of the most successful radio programs in the medium’s long history. Whatever the burning political question of the day, millions of Americans have relished the opportunity to tune into Rush’s program, knowing that he would quickly take that hot potato, throw a few gallons of verbal kerosene into the mix and elevate the matter into a five alarm fire with a just a few well-chosen words spoken in the style only Rush Limbaugh could

After presenting at the Academy Awards this year, Kim Novak didn’t want to leave her house. The Hitchcock screen siren, 81, was too humiliated to venture from her home near the Rogue River in Oregon. She read the cruel posts and Internet snark about her appearance, and it was just too much. “It got to me like it gets kids and teenagers,” she told the Associated Press. The “Vertigo” actress, considered one of the great beauties in her day, posted a note on her Facebook wall Thursday, acknowledging that she’d gotten fat injections in her face and addressing her halted

When it comes to tracking the cost of Obama family vacations, there are two primary challenges. First, the Obamas are prolific jet-setters, so there are many details to track. Second, the Obama administration, clearly embarrassed by these lavish and frequent family vacations, stonewalls the release of records at every turn. But we have been relentless in pursuit of this information. Our attorneys file the lawsuits and make our case, and our investigators pour through pages of records and crunch the numbers. And the information we’ve uncovered – information that would otherwise remain under lock and key – shows that the

I live in Las Vegas. I live and breath Nevada politics. Something is very wrong. Something smells rotten in the Nevada desert. And Senator Harry Reid’s fingerprints are all over it. I am of course referring to the Bundy Ranch siege. This was a dispute between a Nevada ranching family with rights to the land in question for 140 years and the BLM (Bureayu of Land Management). The government claims they haven’t paid grazing fees for 20 years. The result was a government assault on the ranch- including snipers with assault rifles, SUV’s, helicopters, airplanes and over 200 heavily armed troops. No

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

It’s the stuff of Westerns: a showdown on the desert plains, the big bad government against an underdog farmer. Though the story has only grabbed national headlines in the past several days, rancher Cliven Bundy has illegally grazed cattle on the Nevada land surrounding his farm for over 20 years. He hasn’t paid grazing fees since 1993, and refuses to renew the necessary grazing permit.(Snip)Rather than using the avenues and pathways presented to him, Bundy has staunchly declared his own law and allegiances. In an open letter to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, Carter and the nine other Nobel Peace Prize winners bluntly warned the leaders: “Your decision on the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline will define your climate legacy.” The missive, published as an advertisement in Politico, represents the first time Carter has taken a position on the $5.4 billion project and makes him the first former president to come

With Easter soon approaching, the Rev. Al Sharpton on Wednesday drew parallels between the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of President Obama’s political career. Joining the “Tom Joyner Morning Show,” Mr. Sharpton said that his message for this Easter is that “no matter what the world may do to you unfairly, no matter how you’re crucified — nailed to the cross at home, or in your personal relationships, or on the job — that you can rise if you don’t lose yourself during the hard times and the challenges.” The reverend went on to say that Christ endured so much humiliation and unearned suffering leading up to his death,

A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The
