Glorious photographs capture RAF Battle

The six Spitfires, two Hurricanes, a Lancaster, a Dakota and two Chipmunks delight thousands of spectators each year at flying displays across Britain. And now a glorious set of previously-unseen photographs documenting the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight over the years has been released. The first memorial flight was flown in September 1945 over The Mall in central London, and the event soon became an annual commemoration. The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight team was formed just over a decade later in 1957 by Wing Commander Peter Thompson. It serves as a permanent reminder of the 544 RAF

They spoiled the beautiful ellipse of the wing of the one Spit! That wing was unique and a way to immediately identify the Spitfire. I suppose chopping the wings improved aerobatic handling.

I saw the same thing. The ellipse IS the beauty and grace of the Spit.

A cup of Earl Grey ´as good as statins´

Drinking Earl Grey tea could help guard against heart disease, it has emerged, after a study found that bergamot extract--a key ingredient in the hot drink--is just as effective as statins at controlling cholesterol. Scientists believe bergamot, a fragrant Mediterranean citrus fruit which gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavour, can significantly lower cholesterol. They say it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can attack proteins in the body known to cause heart disease. The study found bergamot could even be as effective as statins, used to control cholesterol but which can have side effects in

Fights started outside French town halls tonight as they came under the control of the far-right National Front for the first time following dramatic gains in local elections. Exit polls suggested that the anti-immigration and anti-Europe party had roundly beaten the governing Socialists in a number of key constituencies. [Snip] Riot police were also out in force in other parts of the country as anti-fascist demonstrators threatened FN candidates with violence. It meant further humiliation for Mr Hollande, whose disastrous tax and spend policies have led to economic stagnation, so opening the electoral door to the FN, which is regularly

Environmentalism has become a "religion"--and "religions don´t worry too much about facts" says scientist James Lovelock, father of the modern green movement. On Saturday I wrote a Comment piece for the Telegraph arguing that one of the consequences of the trendy, progressive approach to education favoured by the Left-wing "experts" who still control Britain´s public education system is that children from low income families leave school unable to compete with their more affluent peers. I argued that the only way to level the playing field is to return to a more traditional approach--one of the reasons the poorest 10 percent of teenagers in Shanghai perform at the same level in international maths tests as the richest 20 percent in Britain. British troops will take part in wargames in the Baltics in order to reassure Ukraine in the face of a potential Russian invasion, the Defence Secretary said today. Philip Hammond said Britain would stand by its Nato allies as he warned Russia may attempt to seize more territory. He said claims from senior generals that defence cuts had left the Armed Forces “hollowed out” are “nonsense”, and insisted withdrawing armoured regiments from Germany to bases in Britain would make them more effective. Lord Dannatt, the former head of the Armed Forces, last week suggested 3,000 troops should remain in Germany

If all the recent scare stories about sugar in food drove you to drink, it turns out that it wasn’t necessarily the best place to go. Research conducted for The Sunday Telegraph reveals that a single pint of cider contains as much sugar as the World Health Organisation recommends should be an individual’s daily limit. Scrumpy, it seems, is best avoided if you are on a diet. Worryingly high quantities of the sweet stuff were also found in Baileys Irish Cream and sherry, although, admittedly, those are drinks that tend to be limited to a single glass: rarely does anyone

Former U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey thinks President Barack Obama, a fellow Democrat, was re-elected in 2012 because he ´sucked less´ than former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. The Nebraskan straight-talker told MailOnline in an exclusive interview that Obama isn´t up to the job of bringing liberals and conservatives to the table to rescue America´s slowly choking entitlement programs. And Obama, he said Wednesday in his Manhattan office, knew full well he was lying when he promised that the Affordable Care Act would allow Americans to keep insurance plans they liked. ´He had to know he was misleading the audience,´ Kerrey said

Vladimir Putin’s threat to cut off natural gas supplies which supply 30 percent of the EU’s needs means the EU may be forced to become energy self sufficient. Wind farms do not have the capacity of keeping the central heating thermostat at a sensible level, leaving Putin’s new Cold War seeming literal as well as metaphorical. A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck near Los Angeles late on Friday, rattling a wide swath of Southern California, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of injury from the quake, centered outside suburban La Habra, about 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles, however, families at Disneyland were left stuck on rides as hundreds of stores and homes were ruined by damage. The area was initially hit by a 3.6 earthquake earlier in the evening before the larger blast was felt. The surrounding area was then hit by at least 40 aftershocks following the powerful quake that hit shortly after 9pm.

NHS hospitals have been "fiddling" their death rate figures by falsely claiming that patients were terminally ill, according to new research. The new figures, which show that the number of "terminal" illnesses have risen five times since 2006, have caused concerns that hospitals could be covering up for poor care. Every hospital on the NHS has to collect data on how its death rates compare to what would be expected, but if a case is described as "palliative"--i.e. the patient had a terminal illness and was expected to die anyway--it doesn’t normally count towards death rate. The past couple of weeks have marked a turning point in American ugliness as the mob has turned its full fury on first lady Michelle Obama. From criticism of her trip to China to a recent “tell-all” by former White House assistant press secretary Reid Cherlin in the New Republic about Obama’s allegedly tyrannical behavior, the gloves have been removed. As described, she was a perfectionist — super-attentive to detail and laser-focused on advance planning. And this is bad because? Worse, according to a former (anonymous) staffer, there was no barometer for meeting Obama’s high standards. “The first lady having

A "vast majority" of Mitt Romney donors, establishment pooh-bahs, and an anti-conservative consultant who is the epitome of permanent political class want former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to run for president in 2016. If Betsey McCaughey is correct (and I bet she is, because she has not only read the entire ObamaCare bill, she has written a book about it), Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan publicly humiliated herself during the oral arguments on the Hobby Lobby case, revealing that she either did not read the law, or failed to comprehend it if she did so. Writing in the New York Sun, McCaughey lays out what is wrong with the Justice’s declaration about Obamacare: she asserted that the statute itself mandates provision of birth control. Not one word in the Affordable Care Act guarantees health plans will cover birth control products.

President Bill Clinton´s guilty conscience over his affair with Monica Lewinsky – and a desire to repair his shattered reputation by using the State of the Union address – set his speechwriters an unenviable task, newly released archive papers reveal. The former president appeared to be trying to butter up his wife, Hillary Clinton, out of guilt – or perhaps to fool her – before the scandal broke. And he was determined to try to convince the American public afterwards that he was still of a high moral character. The latest batch of documents from the Clinton Library covering his presidency in the

YOKOHAMA, Japan — Climate change is already having sweeping effects on every continent and throughout the world’s oceans, scientists reported Monday, and they warned that the problem is likely to grow substantially worse unless greenhouse emissions are brought under control. The report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations group that periodically summarizes climate science, concluded that ice caps are melting, sea ice in the Arctic is collapsing, water supplies are coming under stress, heat waves and heavy rains are intensifying, coral reefs are dying, and fish and many other creatures are migrating toward the poles or

The March 26 decision by the NLRB´s Chicago regional director, Peter Sung Ohr, held that scholarship football players are "employees" for purposes of federal labor law. Ohr rejected the longstanding view of Northwestern and the National Collegiate Athletic Association that players are "student-athletes" rather than employees.
