CINCINNATI - Frank Sinatra once crooned, “luck be a lady tonight.” At the Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Saturday evening though, luck could be found in a name. Before cameras and a crowd of expectant guests, an announcer boomed: “Our next millionaire, our next millionaire is Kevin Lewis!” Cheers went up as Kevin L. Lewis, a 52-year-old Cincinnati native, was named as the second of three winners of a $1 million promotional give-away by Horseshoe this summer. He hugged his fiancée to celebrate his instant wealth. The winner told the casino his fiancée kept saying he was going to win

Seoul, South Korea -- Kenneth Bae, the American citizen sentenced to 15 years in a North Korean labor camp, has been moved to a hospital after a serious deterioration in his health, his sister said. Detained in North Korea in November and sentenced in April for "hostile acts to bring down its government," Bae is now suffering from severe back and leg pain and has lost more than 50 pounds, his sister Terri Chung told CNN late Sunday. Chung said she received the information from the U.S. State Department, which told her the Swedish ambassador

Once behind bars for a crime he did not commit, Atlanta Falcons´ Brian Banks is thankful to be back in the game. The rookie linebacker, 28, picked up two tackles in his first NFL pre-season game against the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday, which he called "one of the best moments of my life." A rising high school football star from southern California who had been granted a full scholarship to play in the renowned Division 1 program at University of Southern California, Banks´ career was brought to a sudden standstill by a wrongful kidnap-rape conviction in 2002 that put the then-17-year-old

WASHINGTON -- With the U.S. facing massive overcrowding in its prisons, Attorney General Eric Holder is calling for major changes to the nation´s criminal justice system that would scale back the use of harsh sentences for certain drug-related crimes. In remarks prepared for delivery to the American Bar Association in San Francisco, Holder also favors diverting people convicted of low-level offenses to drug treatment and community service programs and expanding a prison program to allow for release of some elderly, non-violent offenders. "We need to ensure that incarceration is used to punish, deter and rehabilitate -

So the paranoid hippie pot dealer you knew in college was right all along: The feds really were after him. In the latest post-Snowden bombshell about the extent and consequences of government spying, we learned from Reuters reporters this week that a secret branch of the DEA called the Special Operations Division – so secret that nearly everything about it is classified, including the size of its budget and the location of its office — has been using the immense pools of data collected by the NSA, CIA, FBI and other intelligence agencies

On their current trip to Cairo, Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), two of President Barack Obama’s most persistent critics on everything in foreign policy from Syria to Benghazi, have found common cause with him at last. All three fear that the anti-American (and generally anti-human) Muslim Brotherhood (MB), whom they mistakenly see as “moderate,” will disappear from the halls of power in Egypt, our most important Arab ally. They also evidently worry that the MB’s leading figures, such as now-deposed (and arrested) President Mohamed Morsi—who had awarded himself powers greater than any previous ruler

China´s latest plan to link the mainland to Taiwan, either by bridge or via a tunnel that would be triple the size of the one under the English Channel, is sure to heighten long-simmering tensions between the two countries. China, which has always claimed dominion over Taiwan, recently approved a State Council plan for a highway that would connect Beijing to Taipei, which would stretch 1,200 miles, including a 111-mile span over or under the straits that separate the nations. Such a project has been discussed for at least a decade, but was recently approved

New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez may be the most hated figure in sports, but he is a man for our time. He is a master at the insincere mea culpa, at self-involvement, at pretense and greed. Not just greed for money, but for fame and glory. If he had only disgraced himself playing for the Texas Rangers, that would be one thing, but he has done it playing for the most storied franchise in sports, whose legends are synonymous with baseball greatness. So let’s consider the tale of two prodigiously talented Yankee corner infielders, separated by about 80 years

For a glimpse at the secret, special-favors factory that Washington has become under President Obama, check out this week´s big news out of the Environmental Protection Agency. Or rather, look beyond the headlines to the corporate handout hidden within. The big news was that the EPA issued—finally—its infamous annual quota for renewable fuels. That mandate tells the nation´s refineries how much renewable fuel (ethanol) must be blended annually into gasoline, a quota that is becoming a pernicious driver of gas prices. The EPA was supposed to release the 2013 quota last November but decided to leave the industry

As we advance toward the much anticipated rollout of Obamacare on October 1, the true horror of what Congress and the president have wrought is beginning to sink in. There is a growing nervousness that the state insurance exchanges not only won’t be ready, but may harbor a dangerous vulnerability that would allow hackers access to the personal information of consumers who sign up for insurance via the sites. There is also a growing number of Democrats who are advocating a repeal of one of Obamacare’s major pieces: the Independent Payment Advisory Board, which will arbitrarily rule

Another one rejoiced: “The mobilization and security precautions are costing them billions of dollars. We hope to hear more of such psychological warfare, even if there are no actual jihadi operations on the ground.” The jihadists are not the only ones

Appearing on This Week With George Stephanopoulos, Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert battled not only the Democratic panelists but also conservative pundit George Will over the wisdom of shutting down the government to prevent Obamacare funding. Gohmert strongly condemned President Barack Obama’s argument at Friday’s news conference that the GOP’s “holy grail” was enying millions of people health insurance. “That’s a false narrative,” Gohmert said. “He says we’re trying to keep people from having health care. That’s just not true. That is an absolute, blatant lie. We’re not trying to keep anybody from getting health care.

During his Wednesday appearance on Jay Leno´s "Tonight Show,´ President Obama made three factual gaffes; one of them involved the claim that cities not found along the Gulf of Mexico are. Were Obama a Republican, these gaffes would have led news coverage for the next forty-eight hours. Not only did most of the media ignore or downplay these gaffes; the Associated Press went so far as to cover one of them up. In its coverage Thursday, rather than point out the president´s geographical error, the wire service made it look as though no error was made.

The taxpayer-supported Missouri State Fair is getting a lot of negative publicity in social media Sunday following a report of a shameful stunt that occurred Saturday night in Sedalia. (Snip) Basically, a clown wearing a mask of Obama came out during the bull riding event. The crowd was asked if it wanted to see Obama “run down by a bull. Things got worse from there." Things got worse from there, which doesn’t surprise me, given the anti-Obama feeling among many fairgoers from rural Missouri, where Obama lost to Mitt Romney (at least 60-40 percent in much of outlying parts of state)

President Obama took his case for ending the sequester to hundreds of disabled veterans Saturday, saying he protected their benefits from the “reckless” cuts to the federal budget but suggesting next year might be different. “It’s hurting our military. I made it clear that your veteran’s benefits are exempt from this year’s sequester,” the president said to the applause of hundreds at the Disabled American Veterans´ convention in Orlando, Fla. “But I want to tell you going forward the best way to protect the VA care you have earned is to get rid of this sequester altogether.”

Potential 2016 presidential contender Donald Trump spoke to ABC’s Jonathan Karl Sunday morning and reignited the birther issue that he helped spark back in 2011, questioning the legitimacy of Barack Obama’s birth certificate and wondering whether Ted Cruz, who was born in Canada, was eligible to president. “Was there a birth certificate?” Trump asked. “You tell me. Some people say that was not his birth certificate. I’m saying I don’t know. Nobody knows. And you don’t know, either, Jonathan. You’re a smart guy, you don’t know, either.” “I’m pretty convinced he was born in the United States,” Karl said.
