Two Virginians dead after
Dayton air show tragedy

Loudoun Times, by Trevor Baratko

Original Article

Posted By:ScarletPimpernel, 6/23/2013 10:13:26 AM

An airplane wingwalker and her pilot, both from Northern Virginia, were the two people killed Saturday in what´s been described as a horrific and fiery scene during the Vectren Dayton Air Show in Ohio. Jane Law Wicker, the 46-year-old wingwalker, and Charlie Schwenker, 64, died around 12:45 p.m. in the annual event´s second fatal plane crash in seven years. Wicker, the chief operator of Jane Wicker Airshows of Front Royal, had performed in past years at the air show in Leesburg.

Comments:
Local story. Wicker died doing something she loved. Some people may see this as foolish, but wing walking goes back many years, and we Americans are allowed to pursue our dreams. Wing walking represents one of the many manifestations of the adventurous American spirit. RIP Jane and Charlie. My prayers for for their families and friends.

I watched the crash on tv. It was spectacular. And quick. The two dead were doing something they loved to do. No lingering demise tubed up in some hospital bed. No pain because no time. Not the worst way in the world to die.

Too close to the ground to correct for much of anything, including a sneeze by the pilot.
In addition, her position out at the end of the wings changed weight distribution pretty dramatically.
Finally, there can be turbulence coming from other aircraft flying above them, even if those other aircraft had landed. Wingtip vortex is a problem, especially when flying a light aircraft. (I once landed at Dubois Airport in Pennsylvania after an Air National Guard C 130 finished a series of touch and go landings. The C 130 was producing that wingtip vortex stuff, which settles down below the big aircraft, and created some interesting turbulence for the Cessna 150 I was piloting. Fortunately, my flight instructor was with me.)

A friend of mine was there filming and it happened right before her eyes.

This was a terrible tragedy for everyone, friends, family and those who were there and had to watch with no way to help.

Perhaps 64 year-olds shouldn´t be doing airshows. By the way, I´m 60+ and a former pilot.

It almost looked like the pilot got confused and turned the wrong way and then tried to overcorrect. I appreciate what dare devils do for their audiences, but this was just too dangerous to be reasonable. Its pretty amazing how many people are killed doing stunts at air shows.

There´s not much lift on the tail of a bi-plane. The pilot messed up by trying to rotate out of the inversion too close to the ground. You can see by the video it dropped like a rock. Same thing happens at altitude, but you have distance to cover the maneuver.

First, they were too low to the ground to recover from any mishap.

Second, I can´t help thinking of the manual burn in the movie, "Apollo 13". When you are upside down all controls are opposite. What used to be up is down and what used to be down is up.

Third, That being said RIP brave wing walkers. Now all future air shows in Dayton, Ohio have to do without brave wing walkers and Jets.

Though we all face known and unknown risks ahead when we get up every morning, some of which can´t be avoided, being a wing walker probably is not the best of choices of occupation or hobby when one is the parent of 2 young children. Prayers for these boys.

It´ll be a bit easier for Speaker John Boehner to get that famous tan now that he has a place in Florida. The Ohio Republican just bought a condo in tony Marco Island, FL, known for its tropical climate and white sand beaches. "This area of Florida has been the Boehners´ family vacation spot for many years, and rather than continue to put money into vacation rentals year after year, they decided to buy a condo. Their home is in West Chester, Ohio, and will continue to be,” Michael Steel, Boehner´s spokesman said.

The Seattle Seahawks have revealed that a good part of their defensive strategy at the Super Bowl came from the fact that they were able to decode Peyton Manning´s hand signals on the field. Controversial corner back Richard Sherman said that he and his fellow defenders cracked the code that the Denver Broncos quarterback was using, meaning that they knew exactly what to expect for each play. ´We knew what route concepts they liked on different downs, so we jumped all the routes.

Upon migrating to the United States many years ago, I embraced my new home and left the past behind. Never could I imagine that, at some point, that past would become relevant. But now, I am compelled to talk about it again. In the USSR, we had state-controlled media which shaped the narrative entirely. Our founder, Vladimir Lenin, was portrayed as a noble, charismatic, and smart man -- the champion of the underdog (the working class), the seeker of equality, defeater of the rich.

It has been my contention that President Obama’s deal with Iran on nuclear weapons had little to do with stopping Iran from obtaining them, and much to do with his desire to achieve detente with the mullah-run Islamist regime. As I put it here: Obama isn’t motivated, as Israel and Saudi Arabia are, by a strong desire to keep Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. That’s not the purpose of this deal. If it were, Obama would have held out for far more than what the mullahs gave him.

Gonorrhea and syphilis are on the rise in the U.S., mostly in men who have sex with men, a trend the government said is linked to inadequate testing among people stymied by homophobia and limited access to health care. The rate of new gonorrhea cases rose 4 percent in 2012 from the year before, while syphilis jumped 11 percent, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said today in a report. Rates for chlamydia, the most common of the bacterial sexually transmitted diseases, gained less than 1 percent.

According to statistics compiled by SimpliSafe Home Security Systems, Virginia homeowners are 46 percent less likely to be burgled than the national average. The study compares the legislative codes of all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia, and contrasts maximum and minimum burglary sentences, as well as maximum fines, as well as other factors. According to the study, Virginia has both the highest maximum fine for burglary--$100,000--as well as the toughest maximum prison sentence--life in prison.

ObamaCare and Dentistry

ObamaCare will change the American healthcare marketplace in unintended ways. It will have notable impact on the dental field, through mandated pedodontic coverage. Few people enjoy visiting the dentist; however, dental care may become more problematic. Within a few years, private dental care with a trusted and known practitioner may be limited. In the practice of medicine, a notable trend has been the movement of doctors toward employee status rather than owner/partner business practices. This relationship lessens the working hours that burden younger practitioner´s families and provides economic stability at a lower salary.
