Country singer Slim Whitman dies
CNN, by Staff

Slim Whitman, the high-pitched yodeling county music singer whose productive career spanned decades, died Wednesday, his son-in-law told CNN. He was 90. The singer-songwriter, born Ottis Dewey Whitman Jr., died of heart failure at Orange Park Medical Center in Florida, Roy Beagle said. Whitman gained fame in Europe as well as the United States. "Love Song of the Waterfall," which a Country Music Television biography calls his "breakthrough" hit, was released in the early ´50s. His next single "Indian Love Call" brought him stardom, according to the bio. "Whitman joined the Grand Ole Opry

Comments:
Slim Whitman´s career started on 970-WFLA radio in Tampa. In recent years Whitman might have been best known for Rush Limbaugh´s "Peace Update, " featuring Whitman´s "Una Paloma Blanca." An announcer for WFLA just misspoke and said, "Whitman sold 120 records." I think he probably released 120 albums.

Who can forget the soundtrack of the movie ´´Mars Attacks!´´, where Slim Whitman singing the song "I´m Casting My Lasso Towards The Sky" is used to destroy the Martian invaders.

Oops, gotta read those articles. ´Indian Love Song´ was the weaponized music, but ´Lasso´ was also featured in the movie.

Turner´s station used to advertise Slim´s album(s?) on late night TV bragging that, (for one week), Slim was more popular than the Beatles. (amazing, but sort of true).

Slim Whitman was considered one of the most popular singers in Britian and Europe ever. When he made a farewell tour of those countries the halls were sold out months in advance .
He had more gold records than Elvis.
His amazing life included his loyalty to the wife he married in their teens. Together they built his success as she became his manager and business partner.
Farewell to a real talent and gentleman who never strayed from the straight path.

An avalanche has left 12 dead and four missing in the worst-ever recorded disaster on Mount Everest. With peak season just days away on the deadly mountain, Sherpas and guides are busy preparing for the trek up the highest peak in the world. "The Sherpa guides were carrying up equipment and other necessities for climbers when the disaster happened," a spokesman for Nepal´s Tourism Ministry, Mohan Krishna Sapkota, told the AFP news agency. Before a climber begins the ascent, hired Sherpas set up camps at higher altitudes and fix routes and ropes on the slopes above. The Sherpa guides had

But the president’s style is to bluff his way to victory. Recently he claimed that the Obamacare debate was over even though he’s ordered the census bureau to revise its metrics so nothing can be measured. He’s even reserved the right to make changes to the program, claiming the Republicans have no right to input until they change their attitude. Too bad that doesn’t work with Putin. Judge Carlos Cortez flirted with disaster for years. Until recently, politics and good lawyers helped save him. Democratic Party power brokers knew of his abusive language, a drunken driving charge and sexual harassment rumors. Still, they helped Cortez raise $1 million in a decade — more campaign cash than any other district judge in Texas. He spent much of it, a Dallas Morning News investigation shows, on a legal fight to suppress far more damning allegations: that he used cocaine, paid for sex, choked a woman who accused him of fathering her son, and sexually assaulted a little girl.

This insider vocabulary includes terms that may seem a bit comical ("houseable," meaning the artwork fits in a normal-size living room) or contradictory (objects in a museum may be on "permanent loan," which is a loan no one has any intention of paying back, or donated as a "fractional gift," meaning the owner may keep possession of the piece while donating it in installments over time). Last week’s Supreme Court decision in McCutcheon v. Predictably, it unleashed a wrath of criticism from labor unions. But a comparison of their rhetoric to reality shows a little introspection is warranted before they call the kettle black. In the hours after McCutcheon was announced, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka stated, “The Supreme Court made one of the most undemocratic and corrosive decisions in history with the Citizen’s United (sic) ruling. President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent.
