Journal Star [Lincoln, NE], by Dave Dreeszen

Sioux Falls, S.D. - In a victory for the embattled Beef Products Inc., a federal judge Tuesday has returned its $1.2 billion defamation lawsuit against ABC News to South Dakota state court. (Snip) In September, BPI sued ABC, its owner, and six people including World News anchor Diane Sawyer and correspondents Jim Avila and David Kerley, saying network broadcasts and online stories in March 2012 caused consumers to believe the company´s Lean Finely Textured Beef product was unsafe and unhealthy. Attorneys for ABC and other defendants moved in October to transfer the civil suit

Comments:
Diane Sawyer, even this late in her career, may learn that with "Freedom of Speech" comes that pesky "Tell the Truth."

I so hope that ABC gets crushed by this suit. If they´d stick to covering real news (Benhazi, anyone?) such predicaments would be avoided.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was killed earlier this month by a deadly mixture of heroin, cocaine, and several other drugs -- this according to the NYC medical examiner. The medical examiner just released the official cause of death -- listing "acute mixed drug intoxication" as the reason PSH passed away suddenly on February 2nd. According to the medical examiner, the drugs in the actor´s system at the time of his death were heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines (anti-anxiety) and amphetamines (uppers like Adderall). Mixing heroin and cocaine is often termed "speedballing." It´s the same mixture that killed Chris Farley, River Phoenix,

Four of the five authors responsible for drafting an invasive Federal Communications Commissions media study seemingly designed to regulate news coverage donated to Barack Obama’s campaigns for president. Professors Carola Weil and Ernest J. The Clinton Presidential Library released a batch of roughly 4,000 pages of previously-secret White House documents Friday, fueling questions about how history could affect the presidential ambitions of former first lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Several topics covered in Friday’s release relate to Mrs. Clinton, including records from the Health Care Task Force she headed and from her press office in the White House. The papers include internal musings by White House aides, including a warning that there was “great disquiet” on Capitol Hill about whether the Clintons understood the legislative process needed to enact the health

Tokyo - Mt. Gox, the troubled exchange for the virtual currency Bitcoin, filed for bankruptcy protection on Friday and said that it might have lost 750,000 of its customers’ coins, essentially all of them, in a hacking attack. The Tokyo-based exchange, which warned this month of a software flaw that may have allowed hackers to defraud it of Bitcoins, had halted all trading this week. Mark Karpeles, the company’s chief executive, wearing a suit instead of his usual T-shirt, bowed in contrition and apologized in Japanese at a press conference in Tokyo. “There were weaknesses in the system,” he said.

Washington - The National Archives made public on Friday afternoon a trove of secret documents detailing the inner workings of Bill Clinton’s White House, a disclosure of acute interest not just to the history of one presidency but to the prospects of another. Thirteen years after Mr. Clinton left office, the release of 3,000 to 4,000 pages of internal memos and other papers may shed light on decisions he made during a tumultuous time and, just as significantly if not more so, possibly the role his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, may have played in shaping them. The documents are the first batch of a larger set of papers withheld until now under

Which reminded me of a crazy conspiratorial theory I had about Marco Rubio and immigration “reform:” Let’s assume – because it’s true — that the “key funders” of the GOP all favor some form of legalization or amnesty for the undocumented (plus an increase in the number of legal immigrants). Indeed, they’re the main force pushing it on the Republican side. Nevertheless, Rubio badly damaged himself with actual GOP voters by

As John noted below, President Obama spent an hour and a half on the telephone with Vladimir Putin discussing the Russian invasion of Ukraine. What was the conversation like? We can probably get a good sense of it by considering the account of President Bush’s conversations with Putin set forth by Peter Baker in his excellent book about the Bush presidency, Days of Fire. It’s well known that Bush and Putin got on well at first. But when the relationship soured, Bush became exasperated by his talks with the Russian bully. Putin seemed to delight in debating Bush. President Barack Obama is warning Russia "there will be costs" for any military maneuvers it launches in Ukraine, a move U.S. and Ukrainian officials say they believe to be already underway. Officials say Obama may retaliate by canceling a trip to Russia this summer for an international summit and could also cut off trade discussions with Moscow. But it´s unclear whether those moves will have any impact on Russia´s calculus in Ukraine, which is at the center of what many see as a tug of war between East and West. "Any violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing," Obama declared Friday

President Barack Obama fired a few verbs across the front armor of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s tanks, in a rushed statement just after 5 p.m. on Friday. The statement was made as Russian forces — including attack helicopters — appeared in peripheral parts of the Ukraine that are largely populated by ethnic Russians. There’s no evidence that Obama wants to get involved in what may become a war between the Ukraine and Russia. He did not threaten any significant retaliation if Russian force attack nor did he offer military aid to the Ukraine. He announced that Vice President Joe Biden — but not

President Obama´s proclaimed strategy to "bypass Congress" — most conspicuously his broad rewriting of the Affordable Care Act — has given unusual prominence to a fairly arcane legal doctrine: standing. Standing is what is preventing a potential blizzard of litigation against the president´s unilateral decrees, and ironically, it´s a doctrine liberal jurists have long decried. To challenge the government in federal court, it isn´t enough to simply believe that the government´s conduct is illegal or even unconstitutional. Federal courts can hear only specific disputes about the law as applied to particular people. To be heard in court, a person must have

President Obama spoke for 90 minutes with Russian President Vladimir Putin as the United States, its top European partners and the U.N. Security Council spent the day trying to fashion a response to the rapid escalation of the Ukraine crisis after Russian troops took up positions throughout the autonomous republic of Crimea. Obama expressed “deep concern,” the White House said, and called on Russia to withdraw its forces back to its bases in Crimea and “to refrain from any interference elsewhere in Ukraine.” Putin appeared to have given little ground, according to a readout of the conversation from his office.
