Sequester hits cancer patients
— doctors, lawmakers seek fix

Yahoo! News, by Rachel Rose Hartman

You may have heard that White House tours were cut due to across-the-board federal spending cuts known as the sequester. Or that Congress made sure to minimize disruptions to air travel. Or perhaps you know someone being furloughed as a result of the cuts. But did you know a major fight is being waged over sequester cuts to some cancer drugs? After Congress failed to pass a budget this spring, a 2 percent cut to Medicare chemotherapy drug reimbursements went into effect April 1 as part of the across-the-board federal spending cuts designed to save $85.4 billion this year.

Where is the outrage ? I guess it´s not important unless you or someone you care about is a cancer patient.

As early as 2012 some oncologist stopped paying for cancer drugs and waiting for reimbursement, sending patients to find another sources like hospitals. They also sent patients to clinics with druggies for their pain meds.

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho - The City of Idaho Falls told an auto sales company to take down its flags honoring the military. "We´re just here supporting the troops," said Autos 4 Less owner Jonathon Long. "We´re even doing a Christmas donation box for veterans." Long was told to take these flags down after the city apparently received complaints. "With that notice, I pulled the flags down, and after thinking about it overnight, I became more and more upset and decided to do something about it," Long said Wednesday. Long contacted the code enforcement officer and was told the flags are considered portable signs and do

A $110,000-a-year Illinois prison official with a lengthy criminal history returned to the state payroll despite “writing and responding to hundreds of lewd and inappropriate emails” on the taxpayers’ dime and “falsifying” his application for a previous state job, records show. Xadrian R. McCraven’s “state email account revealed hundreds of non-work-related emails that included highly sexualized content; were demeaning towards women; were related to a personal romance or relationship; or were regarding miscellaneous personal business,” state inspectors wrote in explaining McCraven’s firing last year from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

Last summer Ellen Holzman and Meredith Vezina, a married gay couple in San Diego County, got kicked off their long-term Kaiser health plan, for which they´d been paying more than $1,300 a month. The cause wasn´t the Affordable Care Act, as far as they knew. They´d been living outside Kaiser´s service area, and the health plan had decided to tighten its rules. That´s when they discovered the chilly hazards of dependence on the individual health insurance market. When they applied for a replacement policy with Anthem Blue Cross of California, Ellen, 59, disclosed that she might have carpal tunnel syndrome. She

While some analysts believe that the move comes as Wal-Mart is attempting to deal with the negative view many Americans have of its worker benefits program, a closer look reveals the real reason for the shift—

It’s no longer a surprise to hear about double-dippers — public servants who’ve managed to carve out two government paychecks or pensions for themselves. But state Rep. Robert Rita (D-Blue Island) and his brother John Rita Jr. could one-up that, each one day receiving three separate taxpayer-funded pensions, a total of six between them. “Yes, it’s unusual,” Robert Rita says. “But it’s not like we’re doing this because of the pensions. A&E has already suspended Robertson, but Reverend Jackson, his Rainbow PUSH Coalition and GLAAD are demanding to meet with network execs, along with Cracker Barrel´s CEO, to discuss the future of all "Duck Dynasty" memorabilia or content.

At the heart of the Duck Dynasty controversy is a modern paradox: those who most loudly celebrate the gay lifestyle seem to go into a Victorian swoon whenever anyone even obliquely mentions actual gay sex practices such as anal sex. As we watch the corporate clusterduck swirl around the alleged wrongs of reality TV star Phil Robertson concerning homosexuality, it may be instructive to take a step back. Image control has been crucial to gay activists. In 1980 Hollywood produced, Cruising, a big budget film that showed the seamier side of gay life. It got pretty good reviews because it

What a depressing presidency Barack Obama has wrought. Waltzing into office five years ago with the media’s shameless aid on a high-school-style campaign pledge of “Hope and Change,” the former community organizer from Chicago spent his last press conference of the year apologizing for everything he’s done wrong — then announcing he’s “eager to skip town” to Hawaii for “a couple days of sleep and sun.” Well, 17, but who’s counting. One truly has to wonder how the vaunted White House staff of advisers and sycophants came up with the battle plan for Friday’s presser, the last of a terrible year:

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) wants to look tough on budget issues. In an editorial published in USA Today explaining his decision to lead the passage of a budget that reduced vested veteran pensions by an average of $84,000 to $120,000, Mr. Ryan founded his message on the urgent need to “do the right thing.” In doing so, he created a painful irony; Ryan’s budget seeks to save $6B over the next 10 years – equivalent to less than six-tenths of one percent of projected federal spending over that period — by extracting it from compensation already guaranteed to people who earned it risking their lives and defending their country. In other words, despite

Duck Dynasty gave me an unexpected wonderful gift for Christmas: a renewed hope in America. Polling on various social issues confirm that liberals have made significant inroads towards secularizing America into a culture in which anything goes. The norm on TV is disrespectful kids scolding their parents, cussing, youths sleeping around, the promotion of homosexuality, and poking fun at Christians. Traditional principles and values are on the chopping block. Several months ago, I heard about this cable show, Duck Dynasty, that was kicking American Idol´s butt in the ratings on Wednesday nights. It´s easy to forget that the tea party movement is still less than 5 years old. Its successes include the 2010 midterm elections, when it helped the GOP win back the U.S. House. It was once again a noisy and resurgent player in American politics in 2013. But that doesn´t mean it was a year of victories: The movement´s campaign to repeal Obamacare failed, and public approval hit near-record lows after the tea party forced a partial government shutdown. Even tea party events aren´t as large as they once were. Even so, the movement had a great influence on both the debate and on the direction of the Republican Party this year.

Turns out Sarah Palin, who has been one of Duck Dynasty’s biggest defenders, hasn’t actually read the GQ interview that includes cast member Phil Robertson’s controversial comments on homosexuality and other subjects. When pressed by Fox News host Greta Van Susteren whether the language Robertson used when talking about his opposition to homosexuality was graphic and offensive, Palin admitted she didn’t know what Robertson had said. “I haven’t read the article. I don’t know exactly how he said it,” Palin said Monday on Fox News’s “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.”

They try to bolster this point by showing that "an Army private with fewer than two years of service and no dependents earns on average about $40,000 annually." President Obama’s health reform law limps past its biggest milestone in critical condition. Monday was supposed to be the deadline to sign up for Obamacare insurance that would start on Jan. 1. Obama then granted a signup extension to midnight Tuesday — the latest in a series of desperate, short-term fixes. And with enrollment way short of projections, the President’s promise of near-universal coverage recedes into a doubtful future. According to the White House’s no-doubt optimistic count, the first half of December saw an enrollment surge of 1 million, on top of the 1.2 million in October and November.

Sorry, San Francisco. No chestnuts on an open fire this Christmas Eve. Bay Area officials have banned residents from burning wood, indoors and outdoors, on Tuesday -- and might extend the ban into Christmas Day -- as part of an air quality initiative. The order came from a governmental body called the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. It issued a "Winter Spare the Air Alert," which prohibits people from burning wood, manufactured logs or "any other solid fuels" in fireplaces and outdoor fire pits. According to KTVU, air quality officials said pollution was expected to hit unhealthy levels amid a high-pressure system.

A lucky little girl´s initial Christmas present this year was truly a first gift. But it didn´t come wrapped with a bow, it came signed with a pen. Kyrstin Lavelle, 10, was at a Marine Corps gym near Honolulu Christmas Eve Day with her uncle and brother when she spotted President Obama, who is vacationing in Hawaii with his family, working out. (Snip)To return the favor, Lavelle said she gave the President a flower. Obama reportedly said he would give it to first lady Michelle Obama.
