Journalists, First Amendment watchdogs and government transparency advocates reacted with outrage Monday to the revelation that the Justice Department had investigated the newsgathering activities of a Fox News reporter as a potential crime in a probe of classified leaks. Critics said the government’s suggestion that James Rosen, Fox News’s chief Washington correspondent, was a “co-conspirator” for soliciting classified information threatened to criminalize press freedoms protected by the First Amendment. Others also suggested that the Justice Department’s claim in pursuing an alleged leak
"The focus should be on those people who break their oath and put the American people at risk, not the reporters who gather the information." -Eric Holder, under oath in front of the House Judiciary Committee
And he (allegedly) said this with a straight face.
Is anybody really surprised that it has come to this? Obama and Holder long ago declared war on Fox and have been looking for any angle possible to trump up a criminal investigation against them. When criminals run the government, honest citizens are the enemy.
I find it interesting that old media is supporting FOX on this. Maybe they hope FOX will look to them favorably toward employment when the old media finally reaches a level of debt it can no longer sustain and they are let go.
He [Carney] said that the president “believes very strongly in the need for reporters to be able to pursue investigative journalism” but that he “also has to be mindful of the need to protect classified information because of our national security interests.” [emphases mine]
How was POTUS "protecting classified information" on national security grounds when the burned out Benghazi compound was left unattended for HOURS after the attack. During those hours, what "classified information" was stolen by the attackers and how was our "national security" enhanced or protected in any way whatsoever?
The faux outrage expressed by Obama, Holder et al about protetcing national security and Americans seems not to have mattered when discussing details of the death of Bin Laden, the stuxnet virus, etc. Selected (faux) outrage is worse than no outrage at all.
The Chicago mob is at it again. This isn´t anything new....
I remember when the Chicago mob went after obama´s opponent in the Senate race. They dug into the divorce records of his rival and got a judge to open "sealed" papers. The poor young boy whose records they unsealed will never be the same. The fact that the young boy was damaged -- well......
It didn´t matter. The "won" -- won and that´s all that counts in Chicago..
Enough of this pussyfooting around. It´s no longer business as usual. Our Constitution is under attack and all the Senate can think to do is to grant amnesty to 20 million illegals and 40 million extended family members? Congress needs to stop whatever they´re doing and end this tyranny. Either they´re with us or they are against us. Sic semper evello mortem Tyrannis.
This admenstruation is so absurd in their defence of themselves I now laugh out loud at what they(Holder) say. So Holder has the audacity to say alll they want to do is protect the American people and enforce national security. ha ha ha ha. We have the epic fails of Benghazi and Boston as one aspect and the intentional administration leaks about Seal Team Six and the Pakistani Doctor as another aspect, which somehow all seemed to slip through their little alleged dragnet. How did those failures serve national security? Hmmm? Holder´s mealy-mouthed, Charlie Brown, emotionless voice is more than annoying. He might be dressed as a corporate DC type but he might as well be dressed up in the black Stargate outfit, as he is still just an old black-panther criminal, a valid candidate to be displayed swinging down at the town square.
How do we know Obama and Holder aren`t the one`s releasing classified information? After all, they did set up Fast & Furious in an attempt to harm the 2nd Amendment. This could be the same scenario to harm the 1st Amendment.
I see Axelrods plan #2 is in place: They are shipping our boy and his bride off to Africa for a visit- give him a little international patina and get him away from the fray. Not gonna do him any good Axie.
My guess is this is just the beginning..I have a feeling James & the AP are the tip of the iceberg....hmmm the WP leaked about Rosen to pacify AP & it backfired?????????? Do you really think this will wake the press???
When Obama and Holder say they want to protect national security, they are saying they want to protect the Collective, the collective they are creating to support their lavish lifestyles and help destroy those who understand and appreciate PERSONAL INDIVIDUAL freedom. This is all about them gaining power and anyone not on board is the enemy. If the old media had ANY sense whatsoever, they would know that this will lead to their destruction... yet they keep supporting this garbage... at least up to now. These old media narcissistic fools are shooting themselves in the foot but have convinced themselves it feels good since they believe they are still in charge. Little do they know...
Yes #11 - I´m from Chicago and I remember that well. Obama had his opponent personally destroyed in order to win. In fact, up until the Presidency, Obama never had to worry about an election, as he was either unopposed or he had them "taken out", like Ryan was with his divorce records. Scum.
Any supposed indignation, disappointment or "shock" coming from the loathsome MSM about B. Hussein´s latest attack on journalistic integrity is not to be believed. On the contrary, these 200% dishonest co-conspirators have been eager participants in each Obama lie and cover-up. It is they, the loathsome MSM, who have, with the utmost malicious intention, crushed journalistic integrity dead and replaced it with the mindless hymns to Dear Leader they have the gall to call "news". The MSM indignant? You´d be a fool to believe it.
Roger Ailes is a very serious man. He will marshall all the forces of Fox and other colleagues to set the stage for the total destruction of the Obama regime. This will not pass quietly. Make book on it.
We believe we know there is goodness at the bottom of the MSM well. There is not. We believe justice will prevail in the end. It will not when those dispensing Justice are the criminals who will suffer if it is dispensed fairly. Only one thing can make this come out right; the voice of the people dmeanindg fair and honset reporting and with a sense of outrage. There is now no united voice and there is no longer any outrage in the public areana- only whimpers and voices alone whispering for justice. Ergo, nothing will change. No one in this corrupt and vile government need fear anything. And, once they see there is nothing to shrink back from, they will come back on this people like lions on a tiny flock of frightened sheep.
This leak is insignificant information. The Yemin leak that was the excuse for the AP phone records was insignificant. Neither one makes since that they rise to anything worth even investigating let alone criminal prosecution. There is something else going on that we don´t see yet. Or else the Obama administration is just plain stark raving mad.
This is as close as America has been to find the socialist/communist news actors to actually all confess to their life of lying. So much money and the threat of death allow this not to happen. Diane, Tom, Geraldo, all these propagandists will not break, and lose the big bucks, limos, VIP penthouses, cheap loans like Stephanopoulis, the endless list of goodies, BUT maybe, one or two of the younger so called reporters will make the break to truth risking their whistleblow lives to help save America from totalitarian rule. As media/press control all lies, so can media/press end all the lies and expose all of Washington´s crimes. okay, it´s rant.
It may not fully make up for President Obama’s gutting of America’s manned spaceflight program, but for now it will have to do. Star Trek’s Galileo, the fiberglass shuttlecraft featured on the “The Galileo Seven” episode of the classic ’60s sci-fi series, was officially unveiled Wednesday at Space Center Houston, the official museum/visitor center of NASA´s Johnson Space Center, where it will remain on permanent display. If nothing else, the Galileo development program proved far less costly than NASA’s $9 billion next-generation space program, Constellation, which fell victim to Mr. Obama’s budget ax in 2010.
President Obama, who extolled the value of middle-class construction jobs during nearly five years of recession and recovery, has changed his tune to borderline contempt for the blue-collar jobs needed to build the Keystone oil pipeline. In a speech in Chattanooga, Tenn., Mr. Obama actually chuckled derisively Tuesday when he mentioned that Republican lawmakers are promoting the pipeline project for the thousands of jobs it would create over two years. “They keep on talking about this — an oil pipeline coming down from Canada that’s estimated to create about 50 permanent jobs,”
Two New York Times reporters recently posited for President Obama this grim scenario: Low growth, high unemployment, and growing income inequality become "the new normal" in the nation he leads. "Do you worry," the journalists asked him, "that that could end up being your legacy simply because of the obstruction ... and the gridlock that doesn´t seem to end?" Obama´s reply was telling. "I think if I´m arguing for entirely different policies and Congress ends up pursuing policies that I think don´t make sense and we get a bad result," he said, "it´s hard to argue that´d be my legacy.
A military court Tuesday convicted Army Pfc. Bradley Manning of violating the Espionage Act for leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks, a verdict that legal analysts say likely will have a chilling effect on others considering revealing government secrets. While Manning, 25, was acquitted of the most serious charge — aiding the enemy, which carried a penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole — he still faces up to 136 years in prison when he is sentenced at Fort George G. Meade, Md. The sentencing hearing, which starts Wednesday
A Saudi Arabian activist said his government provided Egypt´s military with $1 billion to stage a coup against former president Mohammed Morsi and install interim leadership. Political activist Mujtahid bin Hareth bin Hammaam, who operates an active Twitter campaign aimed at exposing corruption in the Saudi government, said Gen. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi received the money on July 3, United Press International reported. The reason for the payoff, he alleged, was so Egypt’s transfer of power would flow smoothly. But now the Saudi government isn’t sure it spent its money wisely, he said.
Republican lawmakers blasted a proposal by President Obama on Tuesday to cut corporate taxes in exchange for more spending on job-training programs, calling it a revival of a failed plan that would raise taxes initially. “It’s just a further-left version of a widely panned plan he already proposed two years ago — this time, with extra goodies for tax-and-spend liberals,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican. “The tax hike it includes is going to dampen any boost businesses might otherwise get to help our economy.” Mr. Obama visited an Amazon.com distribution center in Chattanooga, Tenn.,
Writing at RealClearPolitics, Heather Wilhelm says that she’s moving from Chicago to Austin, Texas soon. Howdy and welcome! Her move has generated the usual liberal reaction — “Oh, good, because Austin is TOTALLY DIFFERENT from the rest of Texas.” Implying, or often outright stating, that the rest of Texas is a relic of the Neanderthal era with a strong dose of that old time religion that liberals fear and loathe so much. The reaction amuses her, as it should. This deep-seated fear of the ills of religion is intriguing, given that in both books, said ills
The consensus response to President Obama’s Knox College speech on the economy is that the administration has been reduced to pushing a menu of stale and timid policies that, in any case, won’t be enacted. But what if the administration isn’t actually out of ideas? What if Obama’s boldest policy initiative is merely something he’d rather not discuss? And what if that initiative is being enacted right now? A year ago, I published Spreading the Wealth: How Obama Is Robbing the Suburbs to Pay for the Cities. There I described the president’s second-term plan to press a transformative
Hollywood’s James Woods took to Twitter to condemn a recent Rolling Stone magazine edition that seemed to glorify terrorism by splashing a rock-star-type photograph of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on its cover. His weekend tweet included a mock-up of a Rolling Stone cover with the head shot of the 8-year-old boy, Martin Richard, who was killed in the April 15 blast. Mr. Woods‘ accompanying Twitter text: “Rolling Stone cover we will never see.” On Monday, the tweet was still making social media waves, with nearly 700 retweets and more than 260 ‘favorites’ clicks.
The FBI has told Congress it does not need to get a warrant to conduct surveillance with drones, in a letter laying out some of the top federal law enforcement agency’s policies for how it uses unmanned aerial vehicles. In a July 19 letter to Sen. Rand Paul, Stephen D. Kelly, assistant director for the FBI’s congressional liaison office, said the agency has used drones in 10 instances, including twice for “national security” cases and eight times for criminal cases. The FBI authorized the use of drones in three other criminal cases but didn’t deploy them.
Via Hot Air and Byron York, Barack Obama has crossed the constitutional Rubicon. The die is cast. He realizes as much, and is daring Congress to stop him in the pixels of the New York Times. NYT: People questioned your legal and constitutional authority to do that unilaterally — to delay the employer mandate. Did you consult with your lawyer? MR. OBAMA: Jackie, if you heard me on stage today, what I said was that I will seize any opportunity I can find to work with Congress to strengthen the middle class, improve their prospects, improve their security
Conservative bloggers went wild Monday when they got wind of the Congressional Black Caucus’ suggestion that President Obama pick Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Houston for the post of Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Rich Cooper, avid blogger for Security Debrief, responded to the news of the Jackson Lee recommendation in a post by saying, “Apparently, it is not a joke. For reasons that baffle any sense of reality, it is a serious gesture on the part of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) to encourage President Obama to nominate Rep. Jackson Lee
There have been days since her son Ezekiel was born 11 months ago that Los Angeles mom Beth Capper has gone without food to keep up her supply. One friend was arrested for stealing some. It´s not drugs or alcohol or even baby formula that has put her in such a bind. It´s diapers. "There´s no way around buying them," said Capper, a 41-year-old single mother who doesn´t work because of a disability. Across the country, mothers like Capper are facing the same predicament. According to a report published Monday in the
America is in great shape energy-wise. We have more gas and oil reserves than ever before. Indeed, the United States could shortly become the world’s largest exporter of coal. Our cheaper power rates may bring energy-intensive industry back from Europe and Asia. If America’s small colleges are nearly broke and our public schools failing, nonetheless our blue-chip universities’ math, science, and engineering departments, and professional schools, remain the best in the world. It is a small Alaskan village whose inhabitants have relied on the sea for countless generations. But within a decade, it is expected that the ocean which the village of Kivalina has so relied on will completely destroy it--creating America´s first climate change refugees. Temperatures in the Arctic region of Alaska are warming twice as fast as the rest of the U.S, causing ice to retreat, sea levels to rise and coastal erosion to increase. It is a small Alaskan village whose inhabitants have relied on the sea for countless generations. The 400 indigenous Inuit inhabitants of Kivalina, who live
President Obama has been rolling up his sleeves campaigning across the country delivering a surreal stump speech message supposedly aimed at the middle class: big government works, Obamacare is manna from heaven, the wave of recent scandals are “phony” figments of the imagination, and all economic problems are the fault of the Republicans. Conveniently, he leaves out the bankruptcy of Detroit, a city run by his own party for more than half a century. His message is so stale and unconvincing, that even The New York Times and Washington Post have noticed. Both papers, usually loyal to Obama, remarked that
Arizona Sen. John McCain was the Republican Party´s 2008 presidential nominee and he still wants the keys to the Oval Office. But he is beginning to sound more like a fan of likely 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. "She´s a rock star," he said in a newly released interview. "She has, maybe not glamour, but certainly the aura of someone widely regarded throughout the world," he added in a reference to her work as secretary of State. McCain, reportedly trying to win back his reputation as a GOP maverick, was asked by the New Republic
Gotta figure her lead would be even bigger without Joe Miller in the field here. Her nomination for the taking? Alaska should be a top tier pick up opportunity for Senate Republicans next year…but their top choice of a candidate is Sarah Palin. 36% of GOP primary voters in the state say they’d like Palin to be their standard bearer against Mark Begich to 26% for Mead Treadwell, 15% for Dan Sullivan, and 12% for Joe Miller.
FORNEY, Texas - George Zimmerman, the former Florida neighborhood watch leader cleared of all charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, was pulled over for speeding in North Texas on Sunday, CBS DFW reports. According to the station, Zimmerman was armed when officers pulled him over on Highway 80 in Forney, east of Dallas. (Snip) The officer reportedly did not recognize Zimmerman, who was driving a Honda pickup. Zimmerman told the officer he was armed and was then told to put the weapon in his glove compartment, according to the station.
Embattled Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner and an attorney in the Federal Election Commission’s general counsel’s office appear to have twice colluded to influence the record before the FEC’s vote in the case of a conservative non-profit organization, according to e-mails unearthed by the House Ways and Means Committee and obtained exclusively by National Review Online. The correspondence suggests the discrimination of conservative groups extended beyond the IRS and into the FEC, where an attorney from the agency’s enforcement division in at least one case sought and received tax information about the status of a conservative group,
Sen. John McCain — a Democrat? There was confusion Wednesday after the Arizona Republican mistakenly strolled into President Obama’s meeting with Senate Democrats at the Capitol. The room full of Democrats — who happened to be meeting in the same room where the Senate GOP usually holds their weekly policy luncheons — erupted in applause and laughter as the former Republican presidential candidate made his entrance. As McCain, 76, walked out of the Dem-filled space, reporters pressed him as to why he stepped foot in the room.
In an interview on National Public Radio (NPR), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said her new agenda for women will give mothers access to day care so they can “earn without carrying the burden of child care.” During the interview, aired on Weekend Edition Sunday, Pelosi spoke about her newly announced agenda, which is on her website, and is titled, “When Women Succeed, America Succeeds: An Economic Agenda for Women and Families,” a plan that includes universal pre-school and access to day care for working women, and an increase in the minimum wage.
Karl Rove and more than one hundred Republican donors sent a letter to Republican members of Congress on Tuesday, urging them to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill that would include, among other provisions, granting "legal status" to illegal aliens who meet certain criteria. Anticipating that lawmakers will face resistance to the bill when they go home for the August recess, the letter marks the escalation of a campaign in which Republican leaders and donors are pressuring House Republicans to act on an immigration reform bill.
I never thought the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case deserved nearly the attention it got. But reasonable people can disagree about that. What strikes me as unconscionable, however, is the way the supposedly objective media have not only sensationalized a tragedy but at times appear to deliberately bend the facts to fit a desired story line. Maybe it started with the use of pictures of a younger Martin or with the sudden embrace of the term "white Hispanic" to describe Zimmerman in order to more easily paint him as a racist. NBC News was the most egregious offender
