The Obama administration has no business rummaging through journalists’ phone records, perusing their e-mails and tracking their movements in an attempt to keep them from gathering news. This heavy-handed business isn’t chilling, it’s just plain cold. It also may well be unconstitutional. In my reading, the First Amendment prohibition against “abridging the freedom .?.?. of the press” should rule out secretly obtaining two months’ worth of the personal and professional phone records of Associated Press reporters and editors, including calls to and from the main AP phone number at the House press gallery in the Capitol
They are now speaking up because they wonder if they have been being watched. Right now all differences should be put aside politically and everyone band together to stop this assault on freedom, that guy is still in jail after being blamed for a video he made that Obama decided to blame for Benghazi and we know Obama was the one at fault.
Notice how Eugene endorses the Limbaugh theorem by saying the administration not Obama himself mistook journalism for espionage. Obama because he is half black will not be held responsible for any of these scandals. Only far leftists like Eugene and the lo-fo voters believe Obama is not involved in any of them. Good grief how can so many people be so stupid?
there is NO mistake...please, people...remember history...we are now Germany in the 1930´s. Read history, for G+d´sake. and, once again I remind you that Hitler learned his propaganda techniques from Woodrow Wilson.
I am pretty sure Barack Obama has not lost Eugene Robinson, skin color being high on the chart of importance these days. I do however remember many of the times Robinson has attacked, in print and on Television, those who dared disagree with his hero Obama, including specifically and by name Fox News. Words do harm and have consequences. It is my opinion that Robinson (and others) “gave Obama clearance” to go after the journalists at Fox.
Democrats do not recognize the concept of "loyal opposition". To them, opposition is crimethink and therefore it is not only warranted but justified in having everything they do fall into the category of treason.
Liberalism´s prime directive is to destroy the enemy (anyone who doesn´t obey) in the guise of protecting national security.
This is the most criminal Administration in my long life. If they are not stopped by the very press who kissed their butts and by Congress when they get the goods on the crimes we don´t yet even know about, we´re doomed as a free nation. Hell, we´re not even free now any more.
Obama with his two degrees from Ivy League schools, so well spoken, etc. and doesn´t have an idea of what is going on around him and inside his Administration. Amazing what a little bit of pigment will do for you.
To reply 4: I heard Rush explain this yesterday and even tho it made me sick, it made sense.
Because Obama doesn´t do anything, doesn´t know anything, but is always ´working to fix it´, he is never held accountable for anything. Well, except being a great guy trying to fix things that he had nothing to do with.
The only thing that will rock this administration is for some of the enablers to realize that he cares NOTHING for us or for them, and if they had been in Benghazi, they would be just as dead as Ambassador Stevens, and Obama would have gone on to his fund raiser in Vegas.
I mention that little fact to trolls sometimes, and occasionally they have no response.
Rubio is "concerned." McConnell sees a "culture of intimidation." Brit Hume calls it "chilling." "It may well be unconstitutional" is Eugene Robinson´s assessment. So you can assume that the only way to stop the coup is when the country gets permission from the black liberals. We know that the administration is supposedly hiding something worse than the IRS scandal, aka "shoe #4." Perhaps Robinson et.al. will move from noticing wreckage, chaos and a likely string of unconstitutional acts, to actually calling for accountability and removal.
So Eugene "Pulitzer Prize Winning" Robinson finds that Obama is coming after his peeps and he is outraged. Extraordinary. Maybe one day he´ll learn that dictators use the press as tools. If the press step out of line they are attacked and eventually destroyed.
#8 - bless you. For nearly 50+ years my reading passion has been WWII, German theater. I have had the good fortune to teach that era at various times, both as a full-time history/English teacher and now as a substitute teacher.
It is amazing to watch the faces of the students when I teach about Hitler´s rise to power in Germany. They look at the movies I show and the pictures which depict people very much like themselves. Yes, the clothes look a little different, but the people don´t look much different from Americans. They see the modern-looking buildings of the German cities which look very much like busy American cities.
Then they always ask me: "How on earth could these people who look very much like us fall for such a funny-looking guy with the mustache who held his arm out saluting the air all the time?"
Until Obama, I felt safe in telling the students that Germans didn´t have a U.S. Constitution that forbade the kinds of usurpation of power that Hitler took.
Unfortunately, I´m now not the teacher in charge, and I have to choose my words carefully in answering the question. But I always can say that when the U.S. Constitution is trampled on and disregarded, a Hitler-type of government will likely be the result.
The Soviet Union used to spy on communism´s most ardent supporters just as closely as it watched critics. A few sycophants were always hauled off along with anyone who wavered in belief, just to make it look ´fair´. Perhaps that is what has finally dawned on Eugene.
It wouldn´t seem so hippo critical if he reported some of obama´s other abuses of his office. Only now because it´s the media he is concerned. In a week´s time he will be back to worshiping obama again. I have never been able to understand why the media is so into communist type politicians since they are usually the first ones to go when they take control.
It was proven during the Kerry campaign by the North Vietnamese officers from that time that Cronkite totally lied about how we were losing in Vietnam. If it weren´t for Cronkite´s lies, the North says they were within about 6 months of surrendering. He would never have gotten away with that because of the internet today.
#17, one thing that Rush said early on about Obama still stands: That Obama is COLD. He can do anything to further his goals of "fundamentally transforming" the USA because of that trait, among others. It requires a truly cold and bloodless attitude to stand by and watch Americans be slaughtered, and do nothing to help, then callously lie about the whole situation later.
#8 and #21 - Bless you both. "In the Garden of Beasts" struck me as so much like what we´ve been living through already, though I know the worst is yet to come. I listened to the audiobook about a year ago. Germany in the 30s was upsidedown just like now. It is like the same demons are possessing different bodies 80 years later.
#8, #21 - And people think that the Nazis never adapted or changed their story to give people what they wanted to hear. I recently read "In the Garden of Beasts", about America´s ambassador to Berlin from 1933-1938. OFTEN when the Americans complained about American citizens being roughed up by Nazi goons, they´d get fulsome apologies and professions of innocence from those in charge. Just like today - it was just some low-level incompetents being stupid, of course the German government would NEVER condone brutality against Americans, or Jews for that matter. Until there were multiple witnesses who couldn´t be dismissed, and then they´d turn nasty.
I don´t think ol´ Gene´s wandered off the reservstion just yet; he just had to get up and adjust his kneepads.
FTA: "That’s where journalists come in. Our job, simply, is to find out what the government doesn’t want you to know." Too bad you have been loathe to DO your job these last four years. Makes one wonder if you were hanging out with "Bathhouse Barry" back in the day with Larry Sinclair and Rahm and the boys, Gene old Buddy.
SECAUCUS, N.J. -- Forget about setting up those kegs or buffet tables in the parking lot before this season´s Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium. There will be no tailgating, according to the game´s committee CEO, Al Kelly. "You will be allowed to have food in your car and have drink in your car," Kelly said. "And provided you´re in the boundaries of a single parking space, you´ll be able to eat or drink right next to your car. However, you´re not going to be able to take out a lounge chair, you´re not going to be able to take out
One of Congress‘ staunchest critics of Obamacare released a report Monday that cheers on legal challenges to the overhaul and says the White House overstepped its authority by delaying aspects of the law. Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican who helped engineer a lengthy government funding stalemate earlier this year in a bid to block money for the new health care law, said many aspects of the Affordable Care Act are “constitutionally or statutorily suspect” and that the entire law should be repealed. While a repeal is unlikely so long as Democrats control the Senate and White House, Mr. Cruz said
The nation’s new health-care law says insurers can’t turn anyone away, even people who are sick. But some companies, patient advocates say, have found a way to discourage the chronically ill from enrolling in their plans: offer drug coverage too skimpy for those with expensive conditions. Some plans sold on the online insurance exchanges, for instance, don’t cover key medications for HIV, or they require patients to pay as much as 50 percent of the cost per prescription in co-insurance — sometimes more than $1,000 a month. “The fear is that they are putting discriminatory plan designs into place to
There’s nothing like a communal flight with the current president of the United States and his predecessor to make the press miss the days of a communicative commander in chief. George W. and Laura Bush joined the Obamas on Air Force One en route to Johannesburg, South Africa, for a Nelson Mandela memorial service. Hillary Clinton was also on board, with Bill and Chelsea coming to the service from a Clinton Global Initiative event in Rio. The Obamas have stayed in their cabin for the flight, according to the White House pool report from the refueling stop in Senegal, while
The raft of stories over the last week, the latest being today’s piece in Business Insider, about Democratic Party infighting has nicely illustrated something conservatives have known for a while. Complaints over the last few years about the GOP being pulled to the right by conservatives were not about liberals’ desire to meet in the middle and compromise, no matter how much they might decry the supposed extremist drift of the right. What they wanted was their very own Tea Party. It was the same with Occupy Wall Street: the pseudoanarchist gatherings were far more violent than Tea Party protests
The federal government announced today that it has sold the last of its General Motors stock, about 31.1 million shares or 2 percent of the company, ultimately losing about $10.5 billion on the original investment. The government once owned 912 million shares, or 60.8 percent of GM, which it received in return for the $49.5 billion bailout given to the auto manufacturer during the financial crisis of 2008–09. GM’s stock rose about 1.8 percent, or 73 cents, on the news today. GM’s North American president, Mark Reuss, said that he expects GM sales, especially of pickup trucks, to rise once
House and Senate negotiators were putting the finishing touches Sunday on what would be the first successful budget accord since 2011, when the battle over a soaring national debt first paralyzed Washington. The deal expected to be sealed this week on Capitol Hill would not significantly reduce the debt, now $17.3 trillion and rising. It would not close corporate tax loopholes or reform expensive health-care and retirement programs. It would not even fully replace sharp spending cuts known as the sequester, the negotiators’ primary target. After more than two years of constant crisis, the emerging agreement amounts to little more
The sequester, no matter how imperfect a policy, is arguably the only victory for fiscal conservatives in a very long time. Their victory is also president Obama’s biggest defeat (outside of the self-inflicted disastrous Obamacare rollout). It is also another opportunity to remind the American people that the alarmist predictions that we were all subjected to about the devastating impact sequestration would have on our economy didn’t materialize. Yet, in a new move, Republicans are once again considering caving to Democrats and getting rid of the spending cuts. This morning’s Wall Street Journal has the following. Still, officials close to
President Obama’s repeated use of presidential powers is causing a tough problem — his own supporters now expect him to use it to achieve everything they want. From immigration to the minimum wage, congressional Democrats and liberal activists this week urged Mr. Obama to declare an end run around Capitol Hill, assert executive authority and make as much progress as he can on the expansive agenda he laid out for his second term. A day after Mr. Obama denounced income inequality, progressive lawmakers said he should take the lead by issuing an executive order requiring all federal contractors to pay
Three crises, one president, many bewildered friends. The first crisis, barely noticed here, is Ukraine’s sudden turn away from Europe and back to the Russian embrace. After years of negotiations for a major trading agreement with the European Union, Ukraine succumbed to characteristically blunt and brutal economic threats from Russia and abruptly walked away. Ukraine is instead considering joining the Moscow-centered Customs Union with Russia’s fellow dictatorships Belarus and Kazakhstan. This is no trivial matter. Ukraine is not just the largest European country, it’s the linchpin for Vladimir Putin’s dream of a renewed imperial Russia, hegemonic in its neighborhood and
Entering his sophomore year at Occidental College, Barack Obama sought a political movement to match his personal awakening, which he signaled to friends and family at the time by reclaiming his African first name. Barry became Barack that year. He had read Du Bois, Fanon, Malcolm X — an array of authors writing about the black struggle for liberation in his country and in others shaking off the legacy of colonial rule around the world. That is where he looked for — and found — a figure and a cause to channel his rising political enthusiasm: Nelson Mandela, then imprisoned
I´m generally for more disclosure in campaign finance, but the best argument against requiring full disclosure by groups engaged in political speech is that politicians sometimes retaliate against their critics. Sen. Elizabeth Warren inadvertently made that very argument this week. As told by Ben White at Politico, a group called "Third Way" criticized Warren. Warren apparently suspected that Third Way´s criticism of her was funded by banks. So she wrote a letter to bank CEOs demanding they disclose which political groups they´re funding. Warren sits on the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. She´s basically telling the entities
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers. Although they are statistically among the safest on the road, the number of older drivers is increasing dramatically — and with it, that group´s numbers of injuries and deaths. Since 2003, the population of older adults, defined as age 65 and older, has increased by 20% and the number of licensed older drivers increased by 21% to 35 million in 2012, according to NHTSA. Last year, NHTSA reported that 5,560 people older than 65 died and 214,000 were injured
A veteran Washington adviser who has worked for four Presidents on both sides of the political aisle said that the stunning Government Accountability Report report that found President Barack Obama has not had a one-on-one meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius since the passage of Obamacare over three years ago is an indictment of the entire White House operation and shows that the Obama administration has bordered on "malfeasance." "I have no doubt the White House is right, that Secretary Sebelius was in several group meetings with the president about health care," Gergen caveated, "but the whole
President Barack Obama’s Facebook page on Saturday posted a message honoring the dead from Pearl Harbor—accompanied by a picture of Obama descending the stairs next to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The picture barely fits the name of the Arizona Memorial so it can frame Obama in the foreground. The post´s statement reads: Today, with solemn pride and reverence, let us remember those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor, acknowledge everyone who carried their legacy forward, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideals for which they served. President Obama The Obama Administration´s current shipbuilding plan shrinks the size of
Barack Obama did not tell the whole story this autumn when he tried to make the case that Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical weapons attack near Damascus on 21 August. In some instances, he omitted important intelligence, and in others he presented assumptions as facts. Most significant, he failed to acknowledge something known to the US intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the country’s civil war with access to sarin, the nerve agent that a UN study concluded – without assessing responsibility – had been used in the rocket attack. In the months before the attack,
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the hapless, goalpost-shifting so-called "architect" of Obamacare, told Fox News´ Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that President Barack Obama´s promise "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was absolutely true--with one important caveat: if you like your doctor, "you can pay for it." Wallace grilled Dr. Emanuel, challenging his false claims that California´s enrollment was keeping pace with the percentage of the young population necessary to keep the system afloat, and pointing out that the president´s promise on doctors would collapse once people lost their insurance or their
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I
The U.S. isn´t called "America the Beautiful" for nothing. Each year, millions of tourists come from home and abroad to see the country´s majestic landscape and iconic sites, from the Grand Canyon to the Statue of Liberty. But there are also cool, quirky attractions, like Vermont´s Ben & Jerry´s Factory and Tennessee´s Graceland, the former home of Rock and Roll King Elvis Presley. From California to New York and everywhere in between, the country is chock-full of incredible attractions that keep luring in visitors. Here are the best tourist attractions in every state.
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry opened her program over the weekend with a commentary about the Affordable Care Act’s colloquial moniker: “Obamacare.” She said that the word was originally created as a “derogatory term,” designed by white men as a way to delegitimize President Barack Obama and his achievement. However, she said that the term will soon be synonymous with all of Obama’s accomplishments and she urged her audience to use the term with pride. “I want to talk today about a controversial word. It’s a word that has been with us for years, and like it or not, it’s indelibly
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a last minute decision not to participate in a memorial service for the late South African President Nelson Mandela, despite having notified the South African government that he would attend the event. The decision was made in light of the high transportation costs resulting from the short notice of the trip and the security required for the prime minister in Johannesburg. The Prime Minister’s Office found that the trip would have cost roughly 7 million shekels ($2.4 million) – 2.8 million shekels for chartering a private El Al plane and a further 3.2 million shekels for
President Obama, former president George W. Bush and their wives departed Washington Monday morning on Air Force One on their way to a memorial service in South Africa for Nelson Mandela. The president and first lady Michelle Obama are being accompanied by Mr. Bush, former first lady Laura Bush and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on the flight to Johannesburg. A four-hour memorial service will be held on Tuesday for South Africa’s first black president. Mr. Mandela, the anti-apartheid revolutionary, died on Thursday at age 95. Former President Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea are traveling separately to South Africa. Former President
President Obama will make remarks on Nelson Mandela´s legacy during a memorial service Tuesday for the late South African freedom fighter, officials said Monday. "We do expect President Obama to speak as part of the program," said Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser for strategic communications. The president and first lady Michelle Obama departed Monday for Johannesburg, where a Mandela memorial service will be held in a soccer stadium. Obama, who will also spend time with the Mandela family, is not scheduled to hold any bilateral meetings with foreign leaders while in South Africa, Rhodes said. Rhodes also said the
All three networks on Monday morning highlighted the appearance of the Obamas at the Kennedy Center Honors, but only ABC fawned over "fashion win" of First Lady. Lara Spencer enthused that " one of the stars of the show was Michelle Obama." An excited Spencer explained that Mrs. Obama looked "absolutely ravishing in a flowing teal gown as she accompanied President Obama." The co-host declared, "Another big fashion win for the First Lady. CBS This Morning offered a full report on the various performers who were honored, but co-anchor Charlie Rose avoided ABC´s superlatives.
