It would be too easy to make fun of the good Christian voters of South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District who saw fit to return their disgraced former Gov. Mark Sanford to the office he once held. I won’t do it. Well, maybe just a little. Sanford, whose political rise was fueled by his conservative principles and focus on family values, did not stay true to his wife. But in the end, the voters in South Carolina’s 1st stayed true to him.(Snip)“Obviously, there´s a vulnerability to me now that people respond to," Sanford told
Comments: It was reported after he won the primary and was then running against the Democrat that there had been at least 10 other acceptable Republican candidates. If that was true, then why this guy?

The question is also Why did the dems run a woman with an arrest behind her belt waiting for sentence or not or something. A disloyal husband who broke no law except morals is worse than an actual criminal arrest? I guess the voters thought NO.
His opponent, who virtually hid out the entire election, was correctly identified as a Pelosi surrogate and also was separately on the ticket as the candidate of what was once the Communist Party USA. Does the author think perhaps the voters have enough sense to understand the relative merits between adultery and communism?
What is more immoral, the shabby way Sanford treated his family and the voters of SC or the theft and fiscal ruin Democrats wish to force upon future generations of Americans. Sanford is a piece of garbage. Nancy Pelosi and her vermin will destroy the foundations of our great nation. I´ll take the piece of garbage.
He is and was a flawed man...and was and is better than anything the Dems could find to run against him. If the menu is limited pick a simple common dish rather than something "alien" or Exotic. Even if the fish is "not fresh Caught" it´s likely gonna be better than the vegan crablegs or tofu shrimp.
What this story really shows is how peeved the left is that family value republicans didn´t reject Sanford and are a bunch of hypocrites as a result.Find me a man who´s never been intrigued by a woman and I´ll show you a gay.
You have a dem from NY that the IRS said clearly lives beyond his income and there he still sits in the seat.Kickbacks bribes, patronage ,no show jobs are all acceptable to the left because they aren´t hypocrites for running as an honest person.
Watch see if Jesse Jackson jr.really goes to jail.
It is my understanding Stanford was asked about this issue at every campaign stop. He asked for forgiveness each time he was asked -- over and over again. Christians are called to forgive when asked. That, along with his mainly conservative voting record, got him elected. Maybe not on the specific issue of infidelity, but certainly on a host of other issues, where would any of us be if we were never forgiven our trespasses?
In Erie, Pa, a college president was forced to resign for ´probable´ pedophilia, as determined by a retired judge and retired state trooper. The man set up a jefferson society, non profit, to advance his democrat agenda. No one seems to find his conduct disgusting, except me and a few others. (he ran his college as if it were a gulag, in my opinion.) And his former college, and his hand picked successor, appointed another local college president, a monsignor, as dean. The allegations against the monsignor...? Guess. That monsignor resigned from his presidency.. And neither, as far as I know, asked for forgiveness.
Sanford may be a bad sign for the Dems. In the past, we have been quick to throw out our people over sexual infidelities, while for the Dems sexual shenanigans worked more like a Medal of Honor, giving the Dems a systemic advantage. Has South Carolina signaled that the right will no longer cede that particular advantage to the left?
Oh come come now, Robin. seriously? What´s wrong with what he did? It´s his lifestyle choice. I, for one, celebrate his courage and his sexuality. As we all should. Who are we to make moral judgments on how a man chooses to live, and who his partner is?
You do all realize we will never be able to oppose a democrat on moral grounds again. It amazes me none of you noticed how unstable Sanford is, he went AWOL while he was governor, of course some of you may find a democratic governor that went AWOL, and that will make what Sanford did ok. I hope I never see any of the above posters whining about the lack of morals in our country.
#29 gets it exactly right. We own Sanford now, and he´s not done doing wrong. As for forgiveness....
Forgiving a sinner does not obligate you to elect him to Congress. Sanford has disingenuously and deliberately played the penitence card as a campaign strategy. Apparently the first time his sons ever meet the girlfriend was at a public campaign event. Think about what it takes to do that to your kids, and then meet your new congressman.
The place to decide the morality issue is the primary. Sandford won their because of a divided field and his considerable skill at retail politics.
Those skills also caused him to prevail in the general election. Sanford was everywhere in the district and answered every question put to him. Colbert-Busch had a limited schedule of campaign appearances and tried to avoid situations in which she might get off script and let her true left wing beliefs show. The high information voters that predominate special elections saw the clear difference.
Nairobi, Kenya -- Sixty-eight dead. At least 175 injured. About 30 hostages still inside, as well as perhaps a dozen gunmen. Those are the grim numbers, more than a day after Islamist attackers stormed an upscale Nairobi mall on Saturday, spraying bullets and holding shoppers captive. The tense standoff continued into Sunday night, with sporadic gunfire heard through the day and at least one explosion. Kenya´s President Uhuru Kenyatta told reporters Sunday afternoon the Kenyan people had showed resiliency as a nation and would triumph against the attackers. The tragedy was also personal for
The suits who run the Emmys had to make a hard choice in deciding which dead actor to honor-- a TV icon who has won multiple Emmys, or a young actor with no Emmys who is now as famous for being a drug addict as a TV star. They chose door number 2. It´s interesting. We´ve spoken with several people who have won Emmys who are upset with the decision to give a special honor to Cory Monteith but not Jack Klugman, and they´re all too scared to speak out ... for fear of some sort of retaliation. Jack Klugman
NAIROBI — Kenyan troops are locked in a fierce firefight with Somali militants inside an up-market Nairobi shopping mall on Sunday, in a final push to end a siege that has left at least 50 dead and 200 wounded with an unknown number of hostages still being held. Heavy gunfire could be heard as Kenyan security officials said they were attempting to kill or capture the remaining attackers and end to the 22-hour-long bloodbath at the Westgate mall. Somalia’s al-Qaeda-inspired Shebab rebels said the carnage at the part Israeli-owned complex mall was in retaliation for Kenya’s military intervention in Somalia, where African
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Pakistan’s security forces released a top-ranking Taliban prisoner Saturday in an effort to expedite the peace process in neighboring Afghanistan. Abdul Ghani Baradar, who was arrested in 2010 during a raid by the CIA and Pakistani intelligence services, was freed shortly before noon under orders from Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. (Snip)Baradar was considered the second-ranking Taliban leader when he was captured in the secret operation, designed by U.S. officials to gather intelligence about the Taliban network. At least 30 people were reported dead and 60 wounded, including foreigners, after gunmen stormed an upscale mall in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, says the country’s Red Cross. Witnesses said the attackers ordered all Muslims to leave the premises, as only non-Muslims would be targeted. "The casualties are many, and that´s only what we have on the outside. Inside there are even more casualties and shooting is still going on," Kenya Red Cross Society Secretary General Abbas Guled said. A police officer inside the shopping center said the gunmen had barricaded themselves into the Nakumatt supermarket. "We have reports of American citizens injured
NAIROBI, Kenya — An upscale mall popular with the Kenyan elite and the foreign diplomats and businesspeople who call Nairobi home turned into a war zone on Saturday, as gunmen opened fire on shoppers in an apparent terrorist attack, killing at least 20 people and wounding dozens more. At nightfall, the mall remained sealed off to the public as police officers and soldiers searched floor by floor for the gunmen, who were still believed to be inside with hostages. Witnesses described hearing explosions and gunfire as they fled, leaving behind blood, broken glass and carnage in what was apparently one of
At least 26 people have been killed or sucumbed to injuries following the shooting at the Westgate Shopping mall in Nairobi´s Westlands area. This is according to the Kenya Red Cross service that provided emergency response services. The hospitals receiving patients are Aga Khan, MP Shah, Nairobi Hospital and the Kenyatta National Hospital. A well-organised “terror gang” is believed to be behind an armed assault on a Nairobi shopping mall, senior police sources told AFP, adding they had also detained one wounded suspect. “This cannot be a normal robbery because all the survivors are saying how the group confronted them and opened fire,” a senior police official told AFP on condition he remained anonymous. “We have reports there were up to 10 or so attackers and they appeared to be wearing a similar outfit, and others covered their faces,” another police official said. “The pattern of the attack and the way they were speaking to their
Gunmen attacked an upscale shopping mall in the Kenyan capital on Saturday, leading to a fierce gunbattle with police and leaving dozens of casualties. The Kenyan Red Cross reported 20 dead, though a government official, Joseph Ole Lenku, only confirmed 11. A security agent told CNN´s Lillian Leposo at the scene that the violence was a terrorist attack, but officials had yet to confirm that information, Leposo told CNN.
PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans´ trust and confidence in the federal government´s ability to handle international problems has reached an all-time low, with 49% saying they have a great deal or a fair amount of confidence, two percentage points below the previous low of 51% recorded in 2007.(Snip for graphic)These new data come from Gallup´s annual Governance survey, conducted Sept. 5-8, 2013, while Congress was debating the use of military force in Syria, but prior to President Barack Obama´s nationally televised address on Syria, and Russia´s proposal to avert U.S. military action. A photo of Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel signing for South Florida autograph broker Drew Tieman in early January has been obtained by ESPN. It is the first visual representation of Manziel signing for Tieman. In the photo, which two sources have confirmed as legitimate, Manziel, in a long-sleeve maroon shirt, is standing over a covered pool table signing photos of his image while Tieman oversees the process. Get ready for Chelsea Clinton Bump Watch 2014 — the only daughter of the former president and former secretary of State is declaring next year the “Year of the Baby.” In an interview for the November issue of Glamour magazine on her work with the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation, Clinton reveals that she and husband Marc Mezvinsky are planning for a bouncing addition to their household. According to the 33-year-old Oxford grad, the pair, who married in 2010, sat down together a year after tying the knot and made a list focused on their future, saying, “We want,
On Tuesday evening, left-wing Politico ran a headline story encapsulating the theme of the day: “Government closed, Obamacare falters.” That message marked a massive loss for the Obama administration, which has claimed that Obamacare’s implementation could not be delayed, and used that rationale as an excuse to reject the House’s proposal for a one-year delay in favor of a government shutdown. The narrative began to shift early in the morning on Tuesday, when the Drudge Report ran a lead piece on the Obamacare health exchanges coming up with error messages for users across the country. “OBAMACRASH,” Drudge headlined. He followed
President Obama told CNBC’s John Harwood that while he’s been president, he’s “bent over backwards to work with the Republican party.” Obama boasted: During the course of my presidency, I have bent over backwards to work with the Republican party. I think I’m pretty well known for being a calm guy. Sometimes people think I’m too calm. And am I exasperated? Absolutely, I’m exasperated. Because this is entirely unnecessary. I am exasperated with the idea that, unless I say that, ‘Twenty million people, you can’t have health insurance,’ these folks will not reopen the government. That is irresponsible. The President asserted that he’s
More than a dozen House Republicans who want to drop attempts to undermine the health-care law and reopen the government are meeting among themselves and with House Speaker John Boehner -- and he’s listening. For the past few weeks, Boehner’s hand has been guided by a group of Tea Party-aligned Republican House members who’ve urged little compromise in their three-year drive to undo the 2010 Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Now, the agitation is coming from the other side of the caucus. A bipartisan group of about 40 House lawmakers are holding private talks to find a compromise
DALLAS —In a shopping center parking lot 1,300 miles from Washington’s bureaucracy and bickering, teen mom Karina Luciano loaded a watermelon and baby formula into her car. Luciano didn’t realize the federal assistance program that just purchased the food items for her children, Aimee, 2, and Jaiden, 11 months, is now in jeopardy because of the government shutdown. “Oh my god, I think I’m going to cry,” Luciano said upon learning the news. “This is really bad.” Nearly 9 million low-income mothers and children receive benefits under the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Congress’ inability to
New York Magazine writer Jonathan Chait spent his government shutdown day mocking WWII veterans who were shut out by the National Park Service (NPS) when they came to visit the National WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. On Tuesday morning, Representative Michelle Bachman (R-MN) and several Republican members of Congress helped tear down the barricades shutting the elderly veterans out of the WWII memorial. After the barricades were removed, dozens of veterans flooded in to conduct their often emotional visits. But, thinking he was being funny, Chait took to Twitter to poke fun at the veterans, joking that the NPS should
Ted Cruz faced a barrage of hostile questions Wednesday from angry GOP senators, who lashed the Texas tea party freshman for helping prompt a government shutdown crisis without a strategy to end it. At a closed-door lunch meeting in the Senate’s Mansfield Room, Republican after Republican pressed Cruz to explain how he would propose to end the bitter budget impasse with Democrats, according to senators who attended the meeting. A defensive Cruz had no clear plan to force an end to the shutdown — or explain how he would defund Obamacare, as he has demanded all along, sources said. Things
First lady Michelle Obama tweeted on Tuesday afternoon that her Twitter account will see fewer updates due to the government shutdown. Due to Congress’s failure to pass legislation to fund the government, updates to this account will be limited. #Shutdown 12:55 PM - 1 Oct 2013. In 2009, FactCheck.org found that the first lady had a staff of 24 people. It is unclear whether any of the first lady’s staff have been furloughed as a result of the government shutdown.
The White House and the Department of the Interior rejected a request from Rep. Steven Palazzo’s office to have World War II veterans visit the World War II memorial in Washington, the Mississippi Republican told The Daily Caller Tuesday. Palazzo helped the veterans commit an act of civil disobedience against the Park Service Tuesday, when the heroes stormed through barricades around the closed memorial. The veterans were visiting the memorial as part of Honor Flight, a non-profit that provides veterans free transport to the nation’s capital to visit the memorials to the wars they fought in. “We got the heads up
Ronan Farrow’s ol’ blue eyes may say it all. Farrow, long described as the only biological child of actress Mia Farrow and New York filmmaker Woody Allen, may actually be the son of Frank Sinatra, his mom acknowledged in a bombshell report Wednesday. While Hollywood has whispered about the prospect for years, it was the first time that Mia publicly admitted the possibility. Asked point-blank by Vanity Fair about Sinatra’s possible parentage of Ronan, Mia coyly replied: “Possibly.” The “Rosemary’s Baby’’ actress was married to Ol’ Blue Eyes from 1966 to 1968 but continued to be his lover on and off afterward — including
Conservative talker Mark Levin has a stern warning for President Barack Obama and his administration: Don’t mess with the World War II veterans. Levin, author of “The Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republic,” told his audience on his Wednesday radio show should there be any action taken against those veterans for visiting the World War II Memorial on the National Mall, even with the government shutdown, he would bring 500,000 people to march on the Washington, D.C. in response. “I want to tell you folks something — I want to say this loud and clear to the people
President Barack Obama has called off his trip to Malaysia to tackle the US government shutdown, the office of Malaysia´s PM Najib Razak has said. Secretary of State John Kerry will represent him next week instead, the office said. The US government has partially shut down after the two houses of Congress failed to agree a new budget. More than 700,000 federal employees face unpaid leave, and national parks, museums and many buildings are closed. Mr Obama earlier vowed not to allow Republicans to undermine his signature healthcare legislation as a condition to restart the US government. "They demanded ransom," Mr Obama said.
