The State Department on Monday defended its decision not to have lower-level employees testify before Congress about last year´s attack in Benghazi, Libya. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is pushing ahead with his investigation of the terrorist assault, and has asked for legal protections for lower-level employees who might be called to testify. The State Department pushed back on Monday and said the independent probe into the attack "should be enough" for lawmakers. “We think that we´ve done an independent investigation, that it´s been transparent, thorough, credible, and detailed, and that we´ve shared those
What probe? There really wasn´t one. And Congress is one thing, but what about the public at large? Don´t we have a right to know every detail about how our government failed in its duty to protect State department personnel overseas?
The administration and State Department are intellectually inadequate. The American People see how stupid the State department is and they want the truth. An explanation as to why the maker of that Utube video is still in jail is in order also. A probation violation?? Sorry but we are not that stupid. Let the man out and allow him to speak.
Nice try, but you have given us no reason to trust you.
Obama lied, four died! I can only imagine how difficult it was for those Seals who dedicated their lives to our country when they realized their country abandoned them. I hope they knew it wasn´t their country but this Administration. The rest of us adore them!
Judging from all the non-support, lies, threats, and cover-ups that the State Dept. and the Thug regime in the White House has done, foriegn service personell must feel pretty expendable by this time. If any are killed and it´s politically inconvenient to acknowledge how and why, I assume they´ll just need to chalk it up to bad luck. The low life media might not even report it if it is inconvenient for their idol Obama. After all, the legend in his own mind has obviously put an end to world wide Islamic terrorism. Yeah right!
Our leaders with the hands on the switches of power decided to let 30 some odd Americans die. Instead, they prevailed on the battle field and only 4 died. The survivors have been hidden and threatened that they can not reveal secret information such as what they were doing at the annex or what orders they received.
This aught to give ANY member of the press pause. If any of them were to get caught in a situation like Benghazi, or even something more "minor", don´t think for a minute that they are not expendable for the purposes of this administration.
Just as the Supreme Court does not seem to be aware of the term "conflict of interest", as in legally forbidden in most US courts, neither does the State Dept. No credibility-you can´t investigate yourself.
FTA: "“The bottom line is that congressional testimony is at the deputy assistant secretary level and above. And just as you wouldn´t have necessarily a soldier or troops called as witnesses, you have their superior officers. That´s the same practice for the State Department.”
Is this just another rule they´ve made up on their own? Since when is Congress not allowed, unable to speak to anyone they choose to? Let them pick who speaks, we aren´t going to be limited to "superior officers"/coached liars.
If you thought this was beginning to get ugly, you haven´t seen anything yet. The progressives will do anything to protect their agenda. If this administration will abandon Americans to die at the hands of our enemy for political purposes, they are capable of anything. Pray for the men who are willing to tell the truth because they will need all the protection they can get. More importantly, pray that the Republicans do not cave under the political pressure the Obama administration will bring to bear on them. Plus, the vilification by the media for daring to hold the administration accountable will be fierce.
Victoria Toesung, who is representing a Benghazi witness has been told by John Kerry (served in Vietnam) that she (and other lawyers for the cause) will NOT receive government clearance (a normal procedure) in order to speak to her client.
Independent self-examinations by government officials are never anything more than an exercise in CYA. That´s why the Founders gave Congress oversight over the Executive Branch and the press watch dog duties over all of the government. Unfortunately, half of Congress is nothing but a bunch of corrupt partisans, most of the other half are spineless weenies, and the supposed watch dog has turned into advocates for one party. Thankfully there is the New Media and a handful of Republicans with the spine to attempt to get to the truth.
Note to the pit of vipers known as the State Dept. : I suggest that you be concerned that your lies "are NOT enough" for the American People. State and the Dept. of Justice need to be swept clean..they are dirty.
Swear them in, warn them about the penalty fo perjury. Then, your first question: "Have you participated in the attempted overthrow your country?" Don´t praise these people while you interrogate them, and don´t let them define theoir terms. BTW, lawyers know the answers to their questions before they ask them. Have a hat with a rabbit.
I don´t understand why Issa just doesn´t issue subpoenas to whomever they want to question. And when push come to shove, fight it out with those who try to stop them. Get the courts involved and try to clear up just what powers the legislative and executive branches actually have. It would make for good watching, IF we just have enough pubbies with the gonads to do it.
The last time I checked the USA STILL has three co-equal branches of government. To the LoFos in the WH: that means Executive, AND the Legislative and Judicial. Need I stress the "co-equal" part? While I am at it: Hey! Congress! Get some cojones, OK? Wimps. All Wimps. Where have all the heroes gone?
Power Above Everything. Power Above All. It’s becoming more apparent by the day that our governments, from federal all the way down the chain to more and more local ones, are on pursuit to influence not only low-information voters but the highly emotional, soap opera-movie of the week-bleeding heart-ignorance is bliss-crowd as well. It’s the positive side of dumbing down. Say anything. Do anything. All with the ultimate goal of acquiring and retaining more and more of what those governments worship most of all. Power!
Remember Abu Grabhe?? That was a case where the DOD was already doing an internal investigation and holding its members accountable. But the dems and Clinton at the time didn´t think that was enough and made it seem like Bush and DOD was covering up. Scum is too good a word for these sh_t_.
#45 must have checked more than 40 years ago, then. Because the Obaminid in the WH has demonstrated a consistent disregard for constitutional boundaries and the Separation of Powers inherent in the ´3 co-equal branches´ envisioned by the Founding Fathers.
When a President exercises Judicial Review and chooses to treat bills as if they´re enacted whether they´ve passed or not (hell, whether they´ve even been voted on yet or not), the three branches are not ´coequal´.
The Senate immigration bill would add 17 million new potential voters to the U.S. within 25 years, according to a report from the Center for Immigration Studies, released Thursday that argues the influx could have a major effect on American politics. That 17 million is in addition to the 15 million already built in from existing immigration levels through 2036, the researchers said. By comparison, the last four presidential elections were decided by an average of 4.5 million voters. Not all of those 17 million will definitely become citizens. The center’s research looked at those who would be of voting age
I could have built him a broken website for only $633 million. But I have trouble even taking in or believing that number is real. The site itself, which apparently underwent major code renovations over the weekend, still rejects user logins, fails to load drop-down menus and other crucial components for users that successfully gain entrance, and otherwise prevents uninsured Americans in the 36 states it serves from purchasing healthcare at competitive rates – Healthcare.gov’s primary purpose. The reason for this nationwide headache apparently stems from poorly written code, which buckled under the heavy influx of
It has picked up almost universally positive reviews and is being tipped for Oscars glory next year. Now Alfonso Cuaron´s Gravity has begun to pick up praise from a surprising source - Christian critics who say the 3D space spectacular celebrates the presence of God in the universe. Paul Asay of the Christian review blog Plugged In said Gravity showed "the paradoxes of the Christian faith echoed on the screen" and appeared to reference resurrection themes, the concept of a personal interaction with God and of hope in the afterlife. "The film deals with spirituality honestly, not explicitly from a Christian
Does the whole President-meeting-off-the-record-with-journalists-thing bother you? Or is it just me? Earlier this year, President Obama privately sat down with the primetime lineup of MSNBC to talk about selling his tax plan to the American people. Those journalists, or pundits, or hosts, or personalities, or however the hell we define those who host cable news shows these days, weren’t there for an interview, they were there for instructions. And anytime a sitting President enlists those in media to help sell anything via their respective platforms, I don’t hear journalism anymore. I hear ShamWow Guy. On Tuesday, several respected conservative media
As the online rollout of the Affordable Care Act continues to be plagued by glitches, many of the president’s allies and foes are wondering the same thing: how could the most tech-savvy White House in history launch a flawed Web site? There are a few reasons why it’s impossible to translate the technological prowess of Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign into the operation of the federal health-care exchanges. Let’s examine a few of them: 1. Obama’s campaign team – which included a chief technology officer as well as a chief innovation officer and a director of analytics
WASHINGTON — The disapproval comes from angry constituents, baffled party elders and colleagues on the other side of the Capitol. But nowhere have senators found criticism more personal or immediate than right inside their own chamber every morning when the chaplain delivers the opening prayer. “Save us from the madness,” the chaplain, a Seventh-day Adventist, former Navy rear admiral and collector of brightly colored bow ties named Barry C. Black, said one day late last week as he warmed up into what became an epic ministerial scolding.
Thousands of North Carolina residents are facing huge increases in their health care premiums due to new coverage rules imposed by Obamacare. Because the Affordable Care Act mandates certain types of coverage each health care plan must contain, some insurers like Blue Cross are canceling existing plans and requiring customers to purchase new plans. How large are the increases? For some families, the changes will mean tens of thousands of dollars a year, the Charlotte Observer reports: One of them is George Schwab of Charlotte, who pays $228 a month for his family’s $10,000 deductible plan from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of
President Obama has visited the Navy-run presidential retreat Camp David in central Maryland only 32 times, but it is being kept open during the government shutdown for his entertainment and security at the same time the Pentagon is cutting sports coverage to hundreds of thousands of troops around the world. A phone call to the retreat found it open, confirming a TMZ report. Camp David is one of the most highly secure areas in the nation and provides the president with a safe haven. The president has been known to shoot skeet at Camp David, which he most recently used for his
On Tuesday morning, seven National Park Service employees were seen erecting and tending to a barricade around the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. One NPS employee was operating a forklift. There usually aren´t any NPS employees working at the World War II memorial. A couple hours later, when an Honor Flight of World War II veterans arrived, accompanied by Democratic and Republican members of Congress, the fences blocking the memorial were easily moved away, allowing the veterans to enter. But the barriers are still at the memorial, and they´ve been reinforced. This morning, I walked by the memorial and noticed
WASHINGTON — Republican efforts to resolve the fiscal standoff that has closed much of the federal government heated up Thursday, the third day of the shutdown, with new talks over a broad budget deal and an effort by more moderate House members to break the logjam. Representative Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin, chairman of the House Budget Committee, has initiated conversations with senior House Republicans on a broad deficit reduction deal that would allow some increases to federal programs squeezed by the automatic cuts known as sequestration in exchange for long-term changes to programs like Medicare and Social Security. The
Tea party groups, Franklin Graham, Christine O´Donnell, a pro-marriage group. And now Dr. Ben Carson. The list of conservatives targeted by the Internal Revenue Service for audits, tax-exempt reviews or tax privacy breaches keeps growing, raising fresh questions in Washington about whether a scandal the Obama administration has blamed on bureaucratic incompetence and coincidence may in fact involve something more nefarious.
What ails Washington? My list would include hyper-partisan redistricting schemes, pay-to-play corruption, zero-sum-gain ideology, runaway entitlement spending and, finally, the trivializing notion that U.S. politics is a game played by celebrity-politicians. Who broke Washington? No one person, of course, but former GOP strongman Tom DeLay checks every sleazy box. The former GOP House majority leader represented Texas´ 22nd congressional district from 1984 to 2006, when he left amid scandal. Redistricting: The Constitution requires new congressional lines to be drawn every 10 years to reflect the latest census, a process that has always been freighted by politics. Families of fallen military service members usually receive a "death gratuity" of $100,000 for interment and expenses within days, but not during government shutdown. They paid the ultimate price serving their country — but their government can’t spare a cent to cover their funerals. The stooges on Capitol Hill added insult to tragedy Tuesday when it was revealed that the families of four soldiers and a Marine who were killed in Afghanistan have not received a $100,000 “death gratuity” because of the government shutdown....
I was born at the beginning of the Second World War into a family of high school teachers who were members of the Communist Party, and therefore were actually part of a vast conspiracy dedicated to the destruction of this country, although they would never have looked at it that way, and so-called liberals would be the first to deny it. (Snip) It is also an unhappy but hugely important fact that the conspiracy to which my parents belonged has steadily migrated into the heart of the Democratic Party until it now occupies the Oval Office in the person of
From its earliest days, the Obama Administration has operated from a “community organizer” worldview, characterized by an “us” against “them” perspective. The President has repeatedly and in a variety of circumstances said, “Elections have consequences, and I won” as an excuse for yet another executive order, non-Constitutional decision, or “in-your-face” arrogant action. The President goes through the motions of listening to others: he claims to be bipartisan; he hosts White House confabs and talks about the need for compromise, but he always ends up saying, “I won,” and ends any pretense of discussion or negotiation. He explains that, as President,
Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer continued his criticism of Sen. Ted Cruz on Thursday, asking “where is he now?” “How exactly was he going to achieve abolition of Obamacare? Explain that to me. Has he ever explained it? And where is he now?” Krauthammer said on “The Laura Ingraham Show.” Krauthammer, who has previously hit Cruz (R-Texas) on the strategy of shutdown to defund Obamacare, included Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) in his questioning and said the two went home to “have lunch.” “I mean his sidekick, Senator [Mike] Lee said, ‘Oh, we’re past Obamacare. We moved on.’ These are the generals
WASHINGTON — Starting in about a decade, Kingston, Jamaica, will probably be off-the-charts hot — permanently. Other places will soon follow. Singapore in 2028. Mexico City in 2031. Cairo in 2036. Phoenix and Honolulu in 2043. And eventually the whole world in 2047. A new study on global warming pinpoints the probable dates for when cities and ecosystems around the world will regularly experience hotter environments the likes of which they have never seen before. And for dozens of cities, mostly in the tropics, those dates are a generation or less away. "This paper is both innovative and sobering," said
The National Park System has a budget of $2.6 billion, much of it raised by concession and attendance fees. Even if it were entirely taxpayer-funded it would represent only .00068 of every federal dollar in our $3.8 trillion budget. Nonetheless, hardball-playing White House strategists have made it the most conspicuous instrument of pain inflicted by the federal shutdown. The Republican House has tried to fund the park system during the struggle over Obamacare funding, but without success. Even park funding offers by states have been rejected by the feds. Almost every day brings fresh examples of unnecessary annoyances and hardships visited
One of the TV´s priciest daytime experiments soon could be coming to an end. Stations throughout the U.S. are contracted to carry Katie Couric´s syndicated talk show through summer 2014, but the decision on whether Katie will score a third season likely will be made this month -- and renewal seems a long shot. In fall 2012, Disney/ABC TV rolled out the red carpet for Couric, 56, giving her plum time slots on the best stations, fat license fees and loads of promotion. The initial annual budget was $50 million, according to a show source -- including $20 million for Couric
President Obama’s meeting with certain House Republicans, Carney said, would not be a negotiation: “he’s not going to pay ransom to the Tea Party so that the government opens or the government doesn’t default.” Carney blamed divisions among Republicans for the government shutdown, particularly blaming the Tea Party: “The President invited all members of Congress because he believes all of them shoulder the responsibilities…When it comes specifically to the House of Representatives and the House Republican conference, I think the president extended the invitation to all members because we have seen that it is a very diverse and fractious conference…a subsection
The State Department announced Wednesday that it was cutting hundreds of millions in military and other aid to Egypt, and make no mistake: this was not a government shutdown move. This was the President of the United States blackmailing a sovereign state to force it to restore the Muslim Brotherhood government he favors. With the Egyptian economy in crisis and Egypt strongly dependent on this aid, Obama has just effectively cast his vote for the Muslim Brotherhood’s return to power – and his vote outweighs that of millions of Egyptians.
I’m tempted to call it a clown show but that would be insulting to clowns:(Snip for graphic) It ran for one hour and six minutes, with 12 different reporters being called on — although, notably, not Ed Henry of Fox News — and between them they couldn’t muster one question about the catastrophe that is Healthcare.gov or the spectacle of National Park Rangers locking senior-citizen tourists out of war memorials and/or inside their hotels. I admit that, near the end of it, when Twitter was already starting to buzz about the oh-fer on this week’s two unhappy topics, I started
The Obama administration insisted Tuesday it had no choice but to withhold death benefits to relatives of 1st Lt. Jennifer Moreno, a 25-year-old soldier born and raised in San Diego, and four other soldiers killed since the partial government shutdown began Oct. 1. This is ridiculous and perverse. President Barack Obama has used an expansive — and some legal scholars believe extreme — interpretation of his powers to unilaterally rewrite key provisions of the No Child Left Behind law, the sweeping 2002 measure that drastically reshaped federal education policies. In similar fashion, the president has unilaterally rewritten key provisions of
Gov. Jerry Brown of California signed AB 154 on Wednesday, legalizing non-physician abortions in the state. The legislation, which had been pushed vigorously by Planned Parenthood, had been strongly opposed by pro-life groups and some physicians, arguing that it amounted to legalizing back-alley abortions for profit. In a statement, Gov. Brown boasted that AB 154 was one of seven bills signed Tuesday "to support the health and well-being of women in California."
