Anzor Tsarnaev was tough, a championship boxer back home, and he wanted his oldest boy to be tough too. (Snip) But by 2009, Tamerlan´s life abruptly changed course. He told his parents that "the Koran prohibits beating people in the face." He grew a beard, began to pray more than five times a day, dropped out of college and gave up stylish leather pants for sweat pants. He argued with friends over politics, picked a fight at a pizza parlor, shouted at speakers at a mosque. "He gave up drinking and smoking, and he even gave up boxing he loved so much," said his mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva.
Every once in a while the Los Angeles Times´s reporters do a long, in depth article. This is one of them. A family history of the Tsarnaevs.
This is the first I´ve seen that younger brother was disaffected. They expected so much in return for so little effort on their part.
Dzhokhar´s grades reportedly plunged in his sophomore year. He began spending nights with two Kazakh friends in nearby New Bedford. One of them drove a BMW with a provocative vanity license plate: TERRORISTA #1. Both have now been detained on suspicion of immigration law violations.
On social media, Dzhokhar´s postings — usually laced with whimsy about Nutella and cats — took on a darker tone. "A decade in America already, I want out," he tweeted in March 2012.
Terrorist #1 quit boxing because "the Koran prohibits beating people in the face." Well, I´m sure glad he didn´t punch any of the victims in the face.
And what do we know about Bella and Ailina, the sisters Tsarnaeva? If the FBI isn´t watching their every move....Chechen women are notorious for becoming "Black Widows," women who become terrorists to avenge the deaths of their fathers/brothers/sons/uncles/second-cousins-once-removed.
Doesn´t anyone else find it strange that the WaPo, NYT, and LAT are all carrying front-page carbon-copy "family" background spin b.s. this weekend, with the foundational source in each case being uncle Ruslan...what´s his agenda, and who is he connected to and who sponsored his entry and the aunt´s in Canada into the US? He started as a USAID "contractor" as the old Soviet Union was breaking up while the biggest State Department/USAID/OPIC/Ex-Im Bank federal money pimp in those days was George Soros...
A Wal-Mart worker died early Friday after an "out-of-control" mob of frenzied shoppers smashed through the Long Island store´s front doors and trampled him, police said. The Black Friday stampede plunged the Valley Stream outlet into chaos, knocking several employees to the ground and sending others scurrying atop vending machines to avoid the horde. When the madness ended, 34-year-old Jdimytai Damour was dead and four shoppers, including a woman eight months pregnant, were injured.
Vice President Biden promoted local economic development Thursday, and also weighed in on the Senate dispute over filibuster. (Snip)Biden, a Delaware native, visited the new Capriotti´s outpost in downtown Washington, D.C., for a takeout order to be consumed during lunch with Obama at the White House. The vice president paid $56.25 cash for his order. Republicans quickly pointed out that Biden opposed filibuster changes back when Democrats were a minority in the Senate.
Senate Democrats bowled over Republicans on Thursday to win approval for a highly controversial rule change which would limit the GOP´s ability to block nominees. Majority Leader Harry Reid, moving quickly following days of speculation, used the so-called "nuclear option" to pass the change. Typically, major changes like this take 67 votes, but he did it with just a simple majority.(Snip) The late Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., said in 2010 that changing the rules would "destroy the uniqueness of this institution." "In the hands of a tyrannical majority and leadership, that kind of emasculation of the cloture rule would mean that minority
SARASOTA, Fla. — Sarasota police say the husband of former Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris was found dead of an apparent suicide at the couple’s home. Police spokeswoman Genevieve Judge said Tuesday that Harris’ husband, Anders Ebbeson, committed suicide. Officers were called to the home between 7:30 and 8 a.m. Tuesday. During a news conference at the police station, Pastor William Hild of Sarasota First Baptist Church confirmed that Ebbers had taken his own life. Ebbers was a Swedish businessman. Hild, the family’s pastor, says Ebbers suffered from health issues in recent years.
Golf’s governing bodies eliminated penalties for violations detectable only through video evidence such as one that cost Tiger Woods two strokes in a PGA Tour playoff event this year. The rule change, one of several announced today, follows cases where players had been penalized for an infraction only seen when reviewing high-definition replay, often after a television viewer alerted officials. The groups delayed a decision until 2016 regarding the appropriate penalty for instances when a player turns in an incorrect scorecard when unaware that a penalty had occurred. This allows television viewers and others to continue to call in potential penalties they

Indonesia has recalled its ambassador and is reviewing all cooperation with the Australian government, over revelations Australia attempted to listen in to president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono´s phone calls. Documents obtained by the ABC and Guardian Australia show that Australian intelligence attempted to listen in to Mr Yudhoyono´s telephone conversations on at least one occasion, and also targeted the phones of his wife, Ani Yudhoyono, and his inner circle. Spies also tracked activity on Mr Yudhoyono´s mobile phone for 15 days in August 2009, the material - leaked by the US National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower Edward Snowden - reveals.
The scale of Sunday´s deadly storms became clearer this morning: Six people dead in Illinois, hundreds of homes flattened and splintered, 81 tornadoes sighted through the Midwest, 358 reports of damaging winds, 40 reports of large hail. Since 1986, there have been 194 tornado warnings issued in the month of November in Illinois: More than half of them, 101, were issued Sunday, according to the Chicago Weather Center. Hardest hit was Washington, a town of 15,000 people east of Peoria hit by an EF-4 tornado packing winds of 170 to 190 mph. Whole blocks were leveled, prompting the Illinois National Guard to
Jonathan Martin recently received the support of Stanford coach David Shaw, as every aspect of Martin´s career has been put under the microscope during the Miami Dolphins locker room controversy. The former Stanford offensve lineman was seen Saturday night on the sideline during USC ´s 20-17 win, and according to Twitter he enjoyed the game and even did some tailgating. All the amenities of modern medicine are available at a new West Los Angeles hospital. There´s 24-hour emergency care, a team of surgeons, psychology and physical therapy units, MRI and CT machines, one of the top oncologists in the country.(Snip)It is one of only a handful of U.S. animal hospitals that offer such sophisticated procedures as bone-marrow transplants for dogs — at a startling $16,000 — as well as radiation therapy, acupuncture treatment and hydrotherapy pools. "I´ll be honest with you, this is nicer than a lot of human hospitals I´ve been in," said Richard Finn, who drove from his
A veteran undercover cop busted in a motorcycle mob attack has been indicted for gang assault and other serious felonies by a Manhattan grand jury, the Daily News has learned. NYPD Detective Wojciech Braszczok, who faces up to 25 years behind bars if convicted on the top counts, is one of 11 bikers formally charged in a 14-count indictment over the Sept. 29 attack on Range Rover driver Alexian Lien that went viral when footage of the beatdown taken from a helmet-mounted camera was posted online. Braszczok, 32, who was deep undercover during the height of the Occupy Wall Street
I don’t have a dog in this fight. I want that to be very clear. I played offensive tackle for the Miami Dolphins from 2009 until the 2012 preseason, when I was released after tearing ligaments in my foot and injuring my back, both requiring surgery. I have since retired, and I’m happily working in the auto industry and living outside of Miami. I went to college at Nebraska with Richie Incognito, and I consider myself friends with him and Jonathan Martin, but I don’t speak with them regularly and I’m not taking sides. I’m only interested in the truth, which is what I’m going to share,
A Republican strategist is reminding his party that President Reagan is dead. Ford O´Connell, who worked on Sen. John McCain´s (R-Ariz.) 2008 presidential campaign, says if Republicans want to win the White House in 2016, they need to break free of the "obsessive Reagan disorder." Rule #1 of the political analyst´s newly released book, "Hail Mary: The 10-Step Playbook for Republican Recovery," is: "Ronald Reagan is dead. Accept it." Such a sentiment is sure to be tough to digest for a party insistent on using the 40th president´s legacy as a GOP litmus test to prove conservative credentials. "The Reagan fixation is a drag
The hits to President Obama´s popularity, prompted by the botched HealthCare.gov rollout, are simply a natural fluctuation every commander-in-chief faces, Obama told interviewer Barbara Walters in an interview aired Friday. "If you remember, I´ve gone up and down pretty consistently throughout," Obama said in the ABC interview on Friday. "But the good thing about when you´re down is that usually you´ve got nowhere to go but up." "I got re-elected in part because people did think I was trustworthy and they knew I was working on their behalf," Obama said in the network´s exclusive. A CNN Poll of Polls complied
The human species began as the hybrid offspring of a male pig and a female chimpanzee, a leading geneticist has suggested. The startling claim has been made by Eugene McCarthy, of the University of Georgia, who is also one of the worlds leading authorities on hybridisation in animals. He points out that while humans have many features in common with chimps, we also have a large number of distinguishing characteristics not found in any other primates. Dr McCarthy says these divergent characteristics are most likely the result of a hybrid origin at some point far back in human evolutionary history. What´s more, he suggests,
WASHINGTON — As a small coterie of grim-faced advisers shuffled into the Oval Office on the evening of Oct. 15, President Obama’s chief domestic accomplishment was falling apart 24 miles away, at a bustling high-tech data center in suburban Virginia. HealthCare.gov, the $630 million online insurance marketplace, was a disaster after it went live on Oct. 1, with a roster of engineering repairs that would eventually swell to more than 600 items. The private contractors who built it were pointing fingers at one another. And inside the White House, after initially saying too much traffic was to blame, Mr. Obama’s
The Washington Examiner recently reported on an academic study on the 2008 presidential election entitled "The Palin Effect" that examined the effect of then Gov. Palin on the John McCain campaign. Its conclusions run counter to conventional wisdom. The cliché, advanced by the media and the now infamous HBO TV show "Game Change," was that Palin helped to cost McCain the election because of her "controversial" personality. In fact, typical of most vice presidential running mates, Palin had a marginal but largely positive effect on McCain´s standing with the voters. She certainly did not drive away independents and moderates, who along
An education official at a Texas high school is under fire after telling some female students they have been dressing like ‘hoes.’ According to KRIV Fox 26, School Support Officer Dr. Tameca Richardson made the remark to female students at Jack Yates High School in Houston during an assembly on campus. A spokesperson for the Houston Independent School District confirmed the language used by Richardson, the station reported. Some parents expressed anger over Richardson’s terminology, saying the Ph.D.-level educator should have used language that was less offensive. "That was out of line and she should be disciplined for that,"
AUBURN, Ala. — In a season of miracles for Auburn, all it has taken is one mistake to give the Tigers life. No. 1 Alabama made just enough of them Saturday to change the course of history. With no time left on the clock, Auburn cornerback Chris Davis caught a 57-yard field goal attempt by Alabama in the back of the end zone, ran it out down the left sideline and went 109 yards untouched to beat the Crimson Tide, 34-28.
He´s a proud family man already, but President Barack Obama will turn to his children when it comes to life after the White House. Sasha Obama could be the deciding factor in whether the first family stay in Washington once he leaves office in three years. In a taped interview with ABC News, the President said his now 12-year-old daughter ´will have a big vote in where we are´ because she will be a sophomore in high school. When Obama leaves office in January 2017 after two terms, eldest daughter Malia could be off in college. Both girls attend the exclusive Sidwell Friends School
Sen. John McCain is starting to sound like a Tea Party “wacko bird.” In a new fundraising letter for the Republican National Committee released Friday, McCain lashed out at “Barack Obama, Harry Reid and Washington liberals,” who he claimed are destroying the United States. Liberals, he warned, “have taken us down a dark and dangerous path defined by record levels of debt, ever-expanding government, and a lead-from-behind defense strategy. There´s not much time left to turn things around.” McCain’s name carries a lot of weight in fundraising because he was the 2008 GOP nominee and is a leading voice of
President Obama took part in Small Business Saturday by heading over to Politics and Prose, a locally-owned bookstore in Washington, D.C. Wearing a brown leather coat and tan sweater, the president mingled with customers and wished them happy holidays. He brought daughters Malia and Sasha, who occasionally left his side to shop as he chatted with others. At the register, when asked what books he purchased, Obama said, “it is a long list ... books for every age group, from 5 to 52.” In all, Obama purchased 21 titles, including, “All That Is” by James Salter; “Collision Low Crossers:
Former Obama advisor David Plouffe appeared on This Week With George Stephanopoulos Sunday morning and predicted that President Barack Obama’s approval rating would rise over the next few months, following the increasing functionality of the Affordable Care Act. “This has been a tough task,” Plouffe said. “It’s not just health care. The shutdown affected everybody’s confidence in government. But let’s fast-forward to the State of the Union and the months after that. Health care working better, a lot of people signing up. The economy continuing to strengthen. Hopefully no Washington shutdowns.
The time has come to end presidential term limits, because continuing the restrictions on how long one can serve in the country´s highest office is bad for the United States, a university professor argued this week. In an opinion piece published in the Washington Post, Jonathan Zimmerman, a history and education professor at New York University, says deciding whether a president deserves a third, fourth or more terms should be left to the American people, not the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which placed a two-term limit on the position. As background, here´s an excerpt from the amendment, ratified in
