Even Big Labor Unions
Drop Support For Obamacare

Health Care Politics: As ObamaCare rolls out, some of its biggest backers from labor to D.C. lawmakers are having second thoughts. It´s a sign that the idea of ending this national nightmare isn´t about to go away. Late last week, the 22,000-member United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers dropped a bombshell on the Obama administration, not only withdrawing its support for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, but also demanding its repeal. The reason: ObamaCare subsidizes low-paid non-union workers in small companies that don´t insure their employees,

The bottom line is that health care is not a "right", it is something you work for, like a car, house, food, clothing, education, etc. The people who are working for their healthcare, and have made the life choices necessary to do so, are all finally waking up to the fact that they are being screwed to pay for healthcare for everyone else.

Glad for the opposition, but I have no sympathy for these creeps. They supported it when they thought it meant "free" stuff for them, now that the tables are turned they finally realize they were played for suckers.

Love it when Union Greed bites them in the posterior. Would be nice if the rank and file would wise up and realize their leaders do NOT act in their best interest. They only deal in their own interest.

You got what you voted for. Deal with it.

As unions peel away, Democrats who voted for "reform" are backing away from ObamaCare, too.

Weren´t a lot of these unions given an opt out by the O Administration right after the bill was passed? If that is so, why are some unions still wanting to get off this trainwreck-in-waiting?

I´m delighted that Nancy Pelosi´s comment "We have to pass the bill so you can see what´s in it" has had the effect it seems to be having. When O´s buddies in the unions don´t even want it, you know it´s in trouble.

Now, it´s up to Congress. But let´s wait a little while longer -- long enough to have more and more groups and unions and businesses call for repeal.

I understand that many Governments (national, state, and local) require contracts at union labor rates. If this is the case the taxpayer again gets hit with the additional costs union shops have to pay.

Has it been decided who will pay the 40% tax on the top insurance policy. I thought the insured were responcible but have heard mentioned that the employer would be better the better choice. IIRC 0bama 1st referred to them as Premium policies, then as Champagne & now as Cadillac policies (free ad for GM?)

So if you´re a City, State or Fed worker & you get a loaded policy that the taxpayer subsidizes in part or most, is the taxpayer also expected to pay the 40% on these policies? Anyone?

It all depends on the meaning of subsidy. If you´re a lofo or illegal your subsidy is free coverage. If you´re a business your subsidy might be a tax credit at the end of the year. The thing is employer provided healthcare is already subsidized as a deduction for business. That and the home mortgage deductions are the two biggest in the tax code.

Nobody knows what kind of subsidies a small business would get under Obamacare, so this union could be barking for nothing or even fishing for their own middle of the night, gift subsidy.

The roofers union ought to be more concerned about illegals taking over their industry.

Hemisphere: Venezuela´s price and currency controls have wrought what they always wreak: monster shortages. And it stinks, literally, with toilet paper, diapers, soap and deodorant joining drugs on the list. That shutoff from global standards is what prevents willing buyers from acquiring goods from abroad, the source of 80% of Venezuela´s consumer staples. No foreign currency, no purchases. Further down the line, price controls have driven more shortages as costs to produce in an economy with a 56% inflation rate have made it impossible to turn a profit.

Geopolitics: So are Vladimir Putin´s actions in Ukraine just self-defense, as he claims, or a sign of a new sort of war with the West? Conclusions of a 19th century contemporary of Alexis de Tocqueville suggest the latter. Back in 1839, around the time political thinker de Tocqueville made his long visit to the U.S. and found an exceptional nation, writing about it in his classic "Democracy in America," another curious Frenchman, the Marquis de Custine, made a similar pilgrimage to Russia. Fully prepared to fall in love with autocratic czarism, de Custine was instead repelled by a harsh tyranny combined with

Staple shortages in Venezuela are exacerbating, as mirrored by restricted sales in many stores across the country. The supply of personal care products fails to meet demand. Only one or two brands of a single item can be found on shelves. Similarly, drugs stocks are running low. In a bid to meet demand, pharmacies have also been limiting the sale of certain drugs to only two items per person. Since April 2012, the Central Bank of Venezuela has been reporting shortage of personal care and home cleaning products, which sales are restricted as well. Shortage stems from the price regulations enforced for more than
