The radicalization of Tamerlan Tsarnaev:
Older ´bomber´ studied Koran for days
at a time and witnessed ´bombings and
shootings´ in Islamic Dagestan capital

Reuters, by Staff

In America, he had been a cocky and charismatic heavyweight boxer who wore fancy pointy leather shoes and slick white shirts down to the gym. In Dagestan, the volatile southern Russian region where he lived for a time as a teen and returned to spend the first half of 2012, he became a quiet young man who spent his days online studying Islam, nursing a growing anger against heretics. Exactly what turned Tamerlan Tsarnaev into the suspect accused of three murders and mass wounding in the Boston Marathon bombings may never be known.

Tamerlan studied the Koran and then returned to Boston to commit terrorist acts against "heretics" with his brother.

White House extends olive branch as

The inauguration of the new president of Iran, Hasan Rouhani, presents "an opportunity" for Tehran to resolve concerns over its nuclear programme and better engage with the West, the Obama administration said on Sunday. In a statement marking the formal handing over of power to the moderate cleric from his hardline predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the White House congratulated the Iranian people for "making their voices heard" and calling for "change". It added that should the new government in Iran move towards meeting its "international obligations", then it would find a "willing partner in the United States".

Congress´s ObamaCare Exemption

To adapt H.L. Mencken, nobody ever went broke underestimating the cynicism and self-dealing of the American political class. Witness their ad-libbed decision, at the 11th hour and on the basis of no legal authority, to create a special exemption for themselves from the ObamaCare health coverage that everybody else is mandated to buy. The Affordable Care Act requires Members of Congress and their staffs to participate in its insurance exchanges, in order to gain first-hand experience with what they´re about to impose on their constituents. Harry Truman enrolled as the first Medicare beneficiary in 1965,

It never fails to amaze me that in almost every random encounter with a Lutheran, I have found that he knows nothing of Martin Luther´s theology. Most glaringly, the Lutheran, as is often the case amongst mainstream Evangelicals, feels perfectly comfortable vilifying John Calvin. Yet when I mention that John Calvin´s and Martin Luther´s views on human depravity, predestination, and the like are practically identical, and that this can be proven by a casual reading of Luther´s The Bondage of the Will and Calvin´s Institutes of the Christian Religion, these Lutherans almost always passionately deny the case,

We can safely say that most of the world does not respect President Obama. His "red lines" are useless. His "threats" are laughed at. We are closing embassies around the world after President Obama told us that the war on terror was as good as over. And he looks so weak when there is a thug like Putin on the other side of the table. For example, the Cold War and USSR is history but Putin is boosting military ties with Cuba.

Even IRS Head Would Keep His

Health Reform: The American people don´t want it, even Democrats think it´s a train wreck, and now members of the agency charged with enforcing it have said it´s hazardous to our health, financial and otherwise. While testifying Thursday on Capitol Hill, Daniel Werfel, acting chief of the Internal Revenue Service, the agency charged with enforcing ObamaCare´s mandates, told a House committee he would rather keep his current health insurance plan than make the switch to one offered by the Affordable Care Act. Perhaps he admitted what most Americans believe because he is only the "acting" director about to be replaced.

Another Agency Goes IRS

One big question raised by IRS political targeting is whether Obama officials or their bureaucratic allies unleashed the power of the administrative state for partisan ends. Now evidence is emerging that officials at another agency, the Federal Election Commission, used their enforcement power as an anti-conservative sword. The House Ways and Means Committee this week released emails showing that, in 2008 and 2009, the FEC´s general counsel staff sought tax information about conservative political groups from Lois Lerner of the IRS. Ms. Lerner is the IRS official who took the Fifth before Congress rather than tell her side of the

A (New) Lost Generation: As the media focus on a slight drop in unemployment, an ugly trend gets ignored: the declining participation of young Americans in the job market. We´ll pay for this for decades to come. We keep hearing the job market is "improving" or even "solid," with 162,000 new positions created in July and unemployment falling to 7.4%, the lowest since 2008. But one group is sitting it out. And it´s the one that most enthusiastically embraced Barack Obama in both of his presidential elections: America´s young.

The Libyan Lie: Dozens more CIA operatives were on the ground in Benghazi than previously acknowledged. Were they running guns to Syrian rebels? And why are they and their families now being intimidated? The only thing "phony" about the Benghazi scandal has been the cacophony of falsehoods and obfuscation pouring out of the Obama administration about the night four Americans, including the personal representative of President Obama, Ambassador Christopher Stevens, were killed. Up to 35 CIA operatives were working in Benghazi the night of the terrorist attack, dozens more than previously reported, raising questions anew of why

In warning about possible al Qaeda attacks against Americans overseas, U.S. officials may have provided too much detail about intercepted chatter and the source of the information, and that may make it more difficult to get such tips next time, former and current intelligence officials say.On Friday, the U.S. State Department issued a worldwide travel alert for Americans, citing an unspecified al Qaeda threat. The bulletin said that the highest threat levels are the Middle East and North Africa, “and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arab Peninsula.”

Common sense tells me that cops don´t need a Taser or a shotgun to subdue a 95-year-old man. When John Wrana was a young man, fit and strong and fighting in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps, did he ever think he´d end this way? Just a few weeks shy of his 96th birthday, in need of a walker to move about, cops coming through the door of his retirement home with a Taser and a shotgun.

You don´t have to be gay or even Russian to feel the wrath of the Russian government´s homophobia. You could go to jail if you are "pro-gay," whatever that means. And that´s under just one of a growing number of hate-infused bills becoming law at a time when, as it happens, Russia is preparing to host the world in the next Winter Olympics. The perverse anti-gay legislation is inflaming an atmosphere of persistent intimidation and at times deadly violence against Russian gays and lesbians. The question now is: What should the rest of the world do?

I have a suggestion. How about an exhibit on Tawana Brawley? If the purpose of the new National Museum of African American History and Culture at the Smithsonian is to remember racial controversies, as the proposed Trayvon exhibit seems to confirm, then how about an honest look at the phenomenon of hate crime hoaxes? Particular attention should be paid to the role of the media in both the Trayvon and Tawana materials. Unquestionably, the media stirred up racial animus, and these incidents both contributed to raising racial tensions.

Several skills that every kid once learned in school are going the way of the dodo in a hurry. Diagramming sentences is practically an extinct art, for example. Cursive handwriting and memorized multiplication tables look to be swiftly headed that way. Apparently, the next thing that kids will no longer need to learn is spelling and grammar. Sugata Mitra, a professor of educational technology at Newcastle University in northeast England, announced that traditional language rules are out of fashion, reports the Daily Mail. Kids don’t need to waste time on those things, see. State-of-the-art computers and mobile phones can make
