How Savvy Jenny Sanford Sabotaged
Ex-Husband Mark’s Political Comeback

New York Magazine, by Jason Zengerle

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 4/18/2013 5:15:03 AM

A couple of months ago, when I was reporting a feature on Mark Sanford’s political comeback and the ongoing soap opera between him and his ex-wife Jenny, one of his associates told me: “Clearly Jenny has the ability to determine whether Mark wins or loses this race.” It now seems clear that she’s chosen the latter. Jenny insists that she did not leak to the Associated Press the court filings that revealed that Mark had trespassed at her home in early February. “Those documents the AP has are legit,” she told The Wall Street Journal.

Comments:
I read that his sons met his sweetheart for the first time when she showed up, uninvited, at his campaign victory rally. Awkward!

I think he managed to do that all on his own. Did he truly believe he had a prayer of winning office again? Maybe, just maybe in ten or so years after he kept a low profile, perhaps, but all he´s managed to do thus far is to follow one misstep with another.

(OP, the article says only one of the four sons hadn´t yet met Sanford´s fiance at the time of his victory party. The Sanfords have been divorced for over three years now.)

At last! Someone with far better knowledge and credibility than I has opened the door on Mrs. Sanford´s probable motives and activities over the last few years. I agree with the writer that:

she’s waged a brutally effective passive-aggressive campaign. . . Jenny has done a masterful job of keeping her ex-husband’s past (and not-so-past) transgressions in the news. She has seeded the ground with political land mines, stood back, and waited for Mark to step on one.

Is it coincidence that Mrs. S "happened" to return home at the exact time Sanford was leaving? Was she in her car, waiting for the end of the Superbowl game because she knew one of her land mines had gone off?

The Sanfords have four sons. Why was the 14-year old left alone that particular February Superbowl night, on that dark street with so many unoccupied holiday homes? Why were the exterior lights inoperable so that Sanford had to use his cell-phone as a flashlight? "Bulb burned out"? Trust me, I know the area, it´s dark back there. Only an empty first floor (for flooding), a hedged backyard and the dunes lie before the Atlantic. I ask again, why was there no useable light back there so that Sanford had to use his cell phone as a flashlight? So the missus could "catch" him?

Mrs. Sanford is indeed a highly intelligent woman, also the Skil Tools heiress. Before she married Sanford, she was a Wall Street investment banker.

Most people in the 1st District know there´s more here than meets the eye.

Imagine what any good PI working for a political opponent would be able to turn up about Mark Sanford. They wouldn´t need his ex´s help.

The Dems beat the pants off us with opposition research - first of all because we sometimes allow questionable Republicans to run when we should be more picky with our primary votes.

Apart from anything else--meaning not just Sanford´s character flaws but his weirdly erratic behavior--why hasn´t he married his "soulmate" yet, the woman he publicly described as his first real love? If he wins, does he plan to haul her to Washington and introduce her to his colleagues as his mistress? Main squeeze? Galpal? Domestic partner? Ho? What? He´s been divorced over three years. What´s preventing a marriage? Or is this just another manifestation of the fact that both his oars aren´t in the water?

How about the people of South Carolina?

The former three-term congressman and two-term governor saw his political career sidelined four years ago after the affair emerged.

Before leaving office as governor in 2011, he was censured by the Legislature over state travel expenses he used for the affair.

He was also ordered to pay more than $70,000 in ethics fines - the largest in state history - after Associated Press investigations suggested he had misused state aircraft, including to get a haircut.

Buried beneath the avalanche of recent news reports about the latest Obamacare-mandated funding cuts to the Medicare Advantage (MA) program is a related but far more disturbing story — the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has taken a major step toward rationing medications to the elderly. WASHINGTON — President Obama plans to announce on Tuesday the opening of two new manufacturing institutes in the Chicago and Detroit areas as part of a larger plan to use public-private partnerships to advance his agenda despite opposition from Republicans in Congress. Several federal agencies will join forces with companies and universities to run the institutes, which will be devoted to bridging the gap between applied research and product development, according to an administration official familiar with the plans.
