Misinformation and Anxiety in
Boston Terrorism Investigation

Misinformation rather than enlightenment has been the order of the day in the investigation of Monday’s terrorist bombing of the Boston Marathon. The anxiety stemming from the attack and the stream of inaccurate news about it is further freighted, moreover, by the FBI’s confirmation that two letters addressed to top political officials — President Obama and Senator Richard Wicker (R., MS) — tested positive for ricin, a deadly poison. As noted below, a man identified as Kenneth Curtis of Tupelo, Mississippi, has reportedly been arrested in connection with the mailings. Early this afternoon, massive confusion

hmm, it looks now like the ´confusion´ probably stemmed from the fact that those who elatedly told the news organizations that they had a suspect were subsequently told that that suspect was going to be allowed to go home to Saudi ARabia rather than be arrested here.

What´s happening in Boston is the media crawling over the place like cockroaches making the usual asses of themselves and publicly praying for a white male perp. Ignore them all. If they find the monster who did this we will know in due time.

Remember this is the state that kept teddy kennedy in power for years, same with kerry and barney frank. This is the state where the local and federal authorities colluded with whitey bulger as he committed murder after murder. And this is the state whose local and federal authorities turned a blind eye to the pedophile scandal in the Catholic church. And where the 9/11 terrorists launched their attack. Are you REALLY expecting anything from here?

Of course it´s not ´´normal´´, Andy.
We have an incompetent democrat administration in D.C.
An incompetently run, democrat controlled State government.
And a ridiculously incompetent City admin run by a democrat machine.
All looking to find a way to blame the eeevil right wing or The Sequester, therefore the eeevil Republicans. All with MSM doing their part.

I expect John King of CNN to find out why his arrestee has gone missing....back to Saudi at the behest and intervention of Saudi royalty. Smells real bad

Would Obama interfere with an investigation ?

Of course he would, if it could help politically. Or conversely prevent him from looking the fool if middle-eastern buddies are blowing up Boston.

He lost the gun battle and looks lame. Can he lose the terror debate on the same day ? No wonder he´s angry

Story line on Drudge said a ´person of interest´ has been deported. Deported?! All he has to do is go to Mexico then walk back across. I agree with above poster, there is a massive cover up going on while they look around to find a "white American" to take the fall. Disgusting beyond words.

I wish I had the tinfoil concession where you folks live. All of the confusion is the expected result of "news" organizations trying way too hard to be the first to report something significant. It´s why one should believe none if what one hears, and half of what one reads, for at least a week after an event like this. Chill out people.

King on CNN even said something to the effect of "We don´t want to report this" when he had the report of it being a "dark-skinned" individual. Their narrative of it being white male tea party member blew up in their face and Salon mag even admitted if it was a middle eastern attack it would destroy the left.

Exactly right! Some fool down here in Mississippi is zapped up post haste for his little foray into making history….but then he’s probably White ..and fits the ‘profile.’

Meanwhile, I wish I had the serenity…or maybe the ignorance, to accept everything being blasted at us from the ‘news media’ or ‘government officials as either truth or ‘just mistakes made in the heat of the moment.’ The confidence to laugh at others who question the chain of events, who look for discrepancies which would discredit what is being said.

The phrase ‘tinfoil hat’ used as an attempt to discredit what is uncomfortable to hear could be compared to an attempt to stick ones fingers in the ears and repeat ‘na-na-na-na-na loudly. But that action will not change reality. And there is always the possibility that reality, in some form, just might come from a ‘conspiracy nut.´

To turn Pres. Reagan´s phrase on its head: "chill, but remain cynical". When the public´s trust erodes, how long can a "democratic republic" remain so? The trust is eroding - big time.

How we yearn for someone to simply "tell it like it is" (RIP Howard Cosell) and not try to "protect" anyone from anything. We can handle the truth better than all this misinformation.

Right, #5. Having been born and raised in MA, i know what a stultifyingly vapid bunch of people, a majority of the voters, anyway, live in that corrupt State.

They flatter themselves as smart because some of the best universities are in MA. BUt those institutuions have done nothing but produce masses of arrogant numbskulls: they do not think.

We´ll see if the MA sheeple find out about this, whether the monotone ramblings of the fake Indian, Warren and all the other MA legislators, will lull the sheeple back to sleep, or their doped-up somnambulance, their pompous self-righteousness.

It´s hard to believe that my former fellow Bay Staters would question AND hold accountable the Dems, to whose bottoms they´ve attached their lips for so long.

I have a friend who is somewhat close to the investigation. He has repeatedly told me there are no suspects, no arrests and no one positive identified. This doesn´t mean that they don´t have pix and videos but they don´t know who anyone is. That takes time. The reason there are so many starts/stops is because in Boston, everyone wants to be the perosn who knows more than the next guy. Cops and City officials love to show off what they "know" and the media is starving for this.

He was never allowed a public interview. He was executed faster than anyone in history. His attorney said he had a story to tell but was not allowed that privelege.

Sounds familiar.

The New York Post pictured two Ababic looking men and asked the question: "Are these 2 the bombing suspects?"

They are not. Here´s a story in ABC News about one of them: "Salah Barhoun, 17, said he went to the police yesterday to clear his name after he found himself tagged in pictures online. He had just gone to watch the race, he said, but soon after the explosions, he was singled out by internet sleuths as looking suspicious. Federal authorities passed around images of Barhoun, attempting to learn more information about him, sources told ABC News."

I live in Boston and I am as anxious as anyone to catch´em. And I am somewhat unsettled at the apparent ineptitude, confusion and silence coming from the investigators.

The only reason I can think of for not releasing the photos of the "persons of interest" is that the photos of those persons would have upset Barry´s visit to Boston.

People have to have something to feed the news shark. Maybe they should just "no comment" until they get some real details instead of making a mudhole even more muddy.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said little as federal agents seized and then released cattle last week from the Bundy ranch, but there is little doubt that the highly charged episode was threatening to become a political headache for the Nevada Democrat. The Bureau of Land Management is headed by former longtime Reid aide Neil Kornze, who was confirmed by the Senate as BLM director on Tuesday, just as federal authorities descended on the cattle ranch outside Mesquite, Nev. Mr. Kornze issued a statement Saturday saying that the bureau would return the cattle and withdraw its agents from the ranch

On the defensive about their prospects in the midterm elections this fall, congressional Democrats have spent all of April savaging the Republican budget proposal, decrying the Koch brothers and championing a series of bills meant to ingratiate themselves to struggling middle-class voters. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators. The Obama administration said Friday that it would block Iran’s nominee as ambassador to the United Nations from entering the United States, setting up a new confrontation with Tehran just as relations with the Islamic republic appeared to be improving. The decision to bar entry to the diplomat, who was allegedly involved in the 1979 seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, followed intense political pressure on the administration from Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill. But it also marked a rare instance in which Washington has effectively vetoed another country’s preferred choice as envoy to the United Nations. Iran

Struggling homeowners across the country could face significant new tax bills if they receive mortgage relief from their banks, a prospect that threatens to slow the housing recovery and put further strain on distressed borrowers. The collapse of the housing market and plunging home prices left millions of people stuck owing more on their mortgages than their homes were worth. Some have worked with their banks to reduce the loan amount to avoid foreclosure or enable a sale. In 2007, Congress adopted a law that spared those homeowners from being taxed on the amount of the loan that was forgiven. But

The question of whether Justice will do justice now rests with the Obama administration, in service to which Ms. Lerner organized and oversaw the repression of nonprofit activists under color of IRS authority. There are no signs of either side relinquishing their position. Many onlookers have been informed that this dispute is over protecting the desert tortoise. But it is nothing of the sort. In fact, the reality of the dispute goes far underneath what is being talked about. The more appropriate source of the dispute is ground water as well as surface water -- this is a war over water. Cliven Bundy and his

A Nevada cattle rancher appears to have won his week-long battle with the federal government over a controversial cattle roundup that had led to the arrest of several protesters. Cliven Bundy went head to head with the Bureau of Land Management over the removal of hundreds of his cattle from federal land, where the government said they were grazing illegally. Bundy claims his herd of roughly 900 cattle have grazed on the land along the riverbed near Bunkerville, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, since 1870 and threatened a "range war" against the BLM on the Bundy Ranch website after one of

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) is now accusing the Keystone pipeline of being a cancer risk. Her first point was that the pipeline “will bring 830,000 barrels of dirty tar sands oil into our nation every day.” She then segued to point #2 by asserting that the heavy tar sands oil will put people who live near refineries at risk for cancer: Significantly higher levels of dangerous air pollutants and carcinogens have been documented downwind from tar sands refineries, and in these areas people are suffering higher rates of the types of cancers linked to these toxic chemicals, including leukemia and

Let me obliterate a bit of confusion here: the Obama administration attempted to go to war with a rancher in Nevada. Let me amplify a little bit of truth: They tucked tail and have returned home. And let me add a bit of clarity: they had no choice! As the nation began to become familiar with the plight of the family of Cliven Bundy, many of us harkened back to another standoff in which the Federal government attempted to bully it´s outcome: Waco, Texas and the Branch Davidian massacre. It is telling that in the Nevada case the feds pulled out so

President Obama stood Friday with the Rev. Al Sharpton and accused Republicans of trying to keep millions of Americans from voting, in a fiery speech days after new revelations about Sharpton’s past as an FBI informant. “The right to vote is threatened today in a way that it has not been since the Voting Rights Act became law nearly five decades ago,” Obama told the annual convention of Sharpton’s National Action Network in Manhattan. Obama’s appearance represented a presidential seal of approval of Sharpton’s role as a civil rights activist, amid the new revelations about how Sharpton used a wire to record

They’re both qualified, respectful of each other (shocker!), and represent the vast majority of middle America. So what’s not to like about another Clinton/Bush race for 2016? When you mention the prospect of Clinton vs. Bush 2016 a funny thing happens. First, there is the reflexive response: "Oh no, not again. We don´t need more dynastic politics in this country." But upon further reflection, you realize Jeb Bush vs. Hillary Clinton would be a great race and actually good for the country. Let´s review. QUALIFICATIONS—THEY’VE BOTH GOT THEM. Barack Obama won the presidency because in an election where the premium was on change, it mattered little

A rapid shift to wind and solar power is needed if the world is to avoid catastrophic global warming, the United Nations warns in a crucial report today. Emissions of greenhouse gases need to be cut by up to 70 per cent before 2050 to control climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says. ‘Large-scale changes in energy systems’ are required, with coal power stations to be switched off and replaced by wind and solar. And the transformation needs to be made in the next 15 years or controlling climate change will become increasingly harder and more expensive. The report was published

LAS VEGAS — The Nevada Republican Party stripped opposition to abortion and gay marriage from its platform Saturday as state convention delegates instead focused on judging fellow Republicans on their worthiness to serve in office and adherence to GOP values. The platform, with few changes, was adopted overwhelmingly as the Las Vegas convention stretched late into the evening. The vote mirrors that of the Clark County GOP, which voted earlier to remove platform language defining marriage as between a man and a woman and statements opposing abortion. Many Republicans are re-evaluating their strong stances on conservative social issues as public

Say what you will about Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), but they know a train wreck when they see it. They also know when to separate themselves from the cranks and the losers on the right. Although both supported the shutdown and were heartily supported by tea party groups in their own Senate races, neither one has endorsed Matt Bevin in Kentucky, Milton Wolf in Kansas or Chris McDaniel in Mississippi. In fact, Cruz’s office confirms he hasn’t endorsed anyone in the primaries. He may weigh in after the primaries. Rand Paul has endorsed two very establishment

A brazen flash mob has been caught on camera storming a California store and making off with $20,000 worth of sunglasses. Surveillance footage shows eight women piling into a Sunglass Hut and crowding around display cases. Shielding workers from what they´re doing, they quickly stuff dozens of fashion specs into their bags. A store clerk pleads with them to stop, before running out of the shot to get help and dial 911. The thieves then all bolt outside and escape in a waiting SUV. The incident occurred at the Valencia Town Center mall, in Santa Clarita, at 3 p.m. on

It’s hardly been a secret that in recent years the moderate center of the Democrat party has been driven away and what remains is a conglomeration of disparate blocs which, to date, the party has been able to treat as if there were no conflicting interests between them. As the midterm elections approach and the administration’s incompetence, along with the distaste for the president’s signature ObamaCare legislation, drive the party’s chances down further, the make-believe coalition of opposites may well crumble if the opposition doesn’t blow it. Democrats hope to retain control of the Senate and recapture the House by driving
