Mark Kelly threatens to back
challenger to Flake over gun votes

The Hill [DC], by Daniel Strauss

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 4/16/2013 4:33:26 PM

Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), is threatening to back an election challenge against Sen. Jeff Flake if the Arizona Republican votes against legislation to expand background checks. At a Christian Science Monitor breakfast on Tuesday, Kelly said he would back an opponent to Flake if the "right candidate" was available and if the senator failed to support a background check bill, according to reports. Flake, who is not up for reelection until 2018, has been close to Kelly and Giffords. But Kelly said the issue of control trumped their ties.

Comments:
Sit down, Mr. Kelly.

Some former astronauts are very humble people, based on personal experience. Some are arrogant jerks, VERY impressed with their own import.

For example, Mr. Kelly.

Drop dead, sir, we no longer care one whit what you think.

Nothing that has been made available to the public about Jared Loughner, the Gabby Giffords shooter, suggests that a background check would have prevented the crime. The same is true for the Sandy Hook killer. And, as far as we now know, the same applies to the Aurora movie killer. Not a single one of these killers, based upon what the public knows at present, would have been prevented from accessing their firearm(s) by a background check. There is something deeply irrational at work when gun control advocates propose laws that would not have prevented the crimes they deplore. Mr. Kelly can perhaps be forgiven for not thinking clearly or behaving honestly on this subject since his wife has suffered a terrible, permanent brain injury. But gun control zealots who have no such personal tragedy to distort their thinking are blameworthy when they insist upon measures that infringe the liberties of all Americans while promising to do absolutely nothing to prevent the massacres that allegedly inspire them.

It is simply shameful that politicians and anti-gun zealots are agitating emotions and trying to rush through wide-ranging legislation before Americans even know what happened in the high profile cases that are being exploited to spook the herd and pass gun laws in an atmosphere of panic and fear.

It is equally shameful that public officials continue to refuse to make all of the known facts about the crimes and the killers available to the public. This stubborn silence is causing grave social and political damage. It permits fanatics, ideologues, cranks and camp followers to spin whatever yarns and narratives they please without fear of contradiction by the facts.

Mr. Kelly is only going to influence those who are already anti-gun ownership. He has no credibility regarding this issue other than his marriage to a victim of an insane person who happened to use a firearm. Mr. Kelly´s expertise is in aerospace. He should stay with something he is familiar with. It´s reflective of Sarah Brady parading her husband around for political purposes. Don´t these people think that their approach is not only evident, but despicable?

Kelly seems to enjoy his fame and is not eager to give it up. He keeps saying Gabby says and thinks but whenever she speaks, she does not seem to really grasp what is being talked about. That is sad and I am sorry she was hurt so bad, but for her husband to use her to get attention is even sadder. How dare he think he can intimidate someone into going along with him.

New Sulfur Emissions Rule

WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency plans to unveil a major new regulation on Monday that forces oil refiners to strip out sulfur, a smog-forming pollutant linked to respiratory disease, from American gasoline blends, according to people familiar with the agency’s plans. When burned in gasoline, sulfur blocks pollution-control equipment in vehicle engines, which increases tailpipe emissions linked to lung disease, asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, aggravated heart disease and premature births and deaths. Proponents of the rule say it will be President Obama’s most significant public health achievement in his second term, but opponents, chiefly oil refiners, say it is unnecessarily

The arms control agreements with Moscow; the “deal” with Syria; Obama’s negotiations to disarm Iran of nuclear weapons; the Russian-controlled northern distribution network through which NATO forces in Afghanistan are supplied — every one of these — once counted as glittering achievements, the crown jewels of the

Barack Obama is the second U.S. president in a row to badly misjudge Vladimir Putin. In 2001, after his first meeting with Putin, George W. Bush famously told Colin Powell, his secretary of state, that he thought the Russian leader was religious. “Powell, I looked into Putin’s eyes and I saw his soul.” To which Powell replied: “Mr. President, I looked into President Putin’s eyes and I saw the KGB.” Barack Obama hasn’t made that mistake. But in the wake of Russia’s invasion of the Ukranian region of Crimea, it’s worth remembering that in 2008, Obama ridiculed John McCain for warning

President Obama´s proclaimed strategy to "bypass Congress" — most conspicuously his broad rewriting of the Affordable Care Act — has given unusual prominence to a fairly arcane legal doctrine: standing. Standing is what is preventing a potential blizzard of litigation against the president´s unilateral decrees, and ironically, it´s a doctrine liberal jurists have long decried. To challenge the government in federal court, it isn´t enough to simply believe that the government´s conduct is illegal or even unconstitutional. President Obama spoke for 90 minutes with Russian President Vladimir Putin as the United States, its top European partners and the U.N. Security Council spent the day trying to fashion a response to the rapid escalation of the Ukraine crisis after Russian troops took up positions throughout the autonomous republic of Crimea. Obama expressed “deep concern,” the White House said, and called on Russia to withdraw its forces back to its bases in Crimea and “to refrain from any interference elsewhere in Ukraine.” Putin appeared to have given little ground, according to a readout of the conversation from his office.
