Sen. Marco Rubio’s chief of staff Cesar Conda went on a Twitter spree this morning, insisting that the best way to evaluate immigration reform is through “dynamic scoring,” and noting that some “ignore [Jack] Kemp’s teachings” when they cling to static scoring. In other words, Conda is arguing we shouldn’t just look at the costs associated with immigration reform, but also factor in ex ante benefits.Rubio spokesman Alex Conant explained it this way: “This legislation will create millions of new taxpayers,
Comments: I fear Rubio´s time spent with Darth Vader, oops, I mean Chuck Schumer has not been good for conservatives.....or him.
"Dynamic scoring"? The weaker the liberals´ case, the more convoluted their argument. Akin to the Constitution being a "living document". Has the Establishment now "absorbed" Rubio??? Is his ethnicity more important than his country?
More and more evidence that it´s time for a new party. Perhaps DeMint can play a role.
Most Americans believe that everyone should have to get in line to come here and eventually become citizens. We are continually being told that once illegals are here, they cannot be sent back - especially if they have managed to be here for a time, had children, bla, bla, bla....
And you can bet that tomorrow´s illegals, sitting in their Third World countries, are watching this and absorbing every bit. They will be next if this goes the wrong way.
I could not vote for Rubio for dog catcher about now. Just a gut feeling.
For the sake of our Constitutional Republic, Young Rubio and his "Gang Of Eight" comrades need to acquaint themselves with two basic commonsense writings...and fast!: (1) Title 8 Section 1325 of The United States Code and (2) Edward Gibbon´s 18th Century classic, "The History Of The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire."
It is becoming abundantly clear that ALL Politicians are cheats, liars and ready to sell out their constituents no matter what the issue, with the exception of whether it´s an issue they hold dear. Vote no on most things and don´t believe anything.
Dear Mr. Rubio, you have shown your weak spot which will not sit favorably at a time when the insufficiency of jobs and work prospects is at such a low ebbfor American citizens. Now is not the time - be careful or your bright star will flame out.
#2 asks about Rubio: "Is his ethnicity more important than his country?" Of course it is. Did anyone really think otherwise? He´s just another hyphenated American. It is no accident that with hyphenated Americans, the "American" half is always listed second.
There are not enough low skill jobs to go around for American citizens. That´s why the labor force decreases every month. Unemployment ends and they go on disability because the alternative is to starve. So why do we need a "guest" worker program?
American citizen college graduates are living in their parents´ basements because there are no skilled jobs for them. So why do we need an incentive visa program to bring skilled and educated foreigners to America?
Send 11 million illegals back where they came from. Free up work for Americans. Instead of spending money on new visa programs we should be buying 11 million plane tickets. Oh, and they can take their anchor babies with them.
Amusing how the sheeple continually attribute the failings of republican politicians to things like naivete, or being fooled by those much smarter dem politicians.
Are you serious?
They are doing what they are doing, with full knowledge of how their choice will affect everything. There are no moments of surprise when they "realize" they were duped by those nasty dems. They do what they do because that fits with THEIR agenda, period.
The 1880-1910 wave came for opportunity and we didn´t have a welfare state. Are these immigrants coming for the same reason? The only reason to encourage immigration is because it adds economic value to a nation. What value do these immigrants add?
47% of low wage earners pay NO Federal taxes now. Unless the majority of illegals now here are rocket scientists, I doubt if they will pay Federal taxes either. IF this government and this Congress has no intention of deporting illegals, WHY are there laws in the first place? It is not the fault of ordinary law abiding citizens that our border is open, yet WE are paying the price. I demand a "do over" send them back and start all over.
Someone has convinced Rubio that it is better to be very rich than run for President as a Republican--- and that, maybe, down the line a few years when all the old line anti-Castro Cubans have died off, a very rich fellow with a Spanish name might even think about running for President as a Democrat.
The Republican establishment has a history of taking sides against the American people on illegal immigration. They won´t stand up for us. Remember when GW Bush called American citizens trying to defend their border from gangs, drugs, cartels and unneeded workers "vigilantes?" The problem in his mind was AMERICAN citizens.
This bunch is no different. There is NO American interest to be served by legalizing a massive imported underclass. This is all about what is good for politicians. They were willing to sell us out last time McCain pushed amnesty, and this time will be no different. Except Americans may be too lazy this time to defend what´s left of their country.
Probably what politicians from both parties are hoping for.
After reading all these replies I can forecast a defeat for Republicans next year. I thought Lucianne posters were smarter than that. We have a problem to solve that cannot be ignored, and yet everyone here is spouting venom about the problem. Thanks, but no thanks, we don´t need your venom. What we need are solutions, and not stupid, "just send them all home", ones. This is not possible, and if you think it is you are too dumb to post here. Work permits with a crackdown on employers who hire anyone without a permit. The permit will enable the government to collect taxes on their paycheck like all Americans pay. More retired Marines on the border to really close it down.
The vast majority of the 11 to 20 million illegal aliens here now are poor people, who are not highly educated, have large families, and earn low wages. Because of where most illegal aliens are in the US economic pecking order, when they get to the bottom line on their tax returns, they usually have no tax liability, and file tax returns to get a refund of withheld taxes and a variety of tax credits.
The vast majority of illegal aliens work in certain construction, service, and the agricultural industries. Because of their lack of a legal immigration status a lot of the jobs that they do are labor intensive and are low paying. However once legalized, and with human nature being what it is, when they figure out that they have become eligible to participate in US social welfare programs, why should they continue to do those low paying jobs when they could end up with more money by taking advantage of the social welfare programs that will be open to them?
Also once legalized, no doubt a segment of the legalized alien working population will attempt to move up, by competing for jobs against American workers across the entire legal US job market. Since those aliens are known by employers to be happy to work for much less then most American workers can except while attempting to maintain their customary US standard of living, in many cases employers will be happy as clams to hire low wage legalized alien workers instead of American workers. If that happens on a large scale, the wages of a lot of American workers in industries where newly legalized foreign workers can be lawfully hired are going to drop, you can bet on that.
Dorothy Goldstein had just visited her late husband at the cemetery. Now she and her son were hungry for a nice lunch. So, on a beautiful autumn afternoon, they headed for a gas station. At the Exxon station in downtown Olney, they stepped up to the counter of Corned Beef King, where they’d dined before. To their left: a beef jerky display. To their right: keno on TV. All around them: the delish aroma of a New York deli. Goldstein, a retiree in Dolce & Gabbana glasses, ordered pastrami. Her son got the Angry Turkey Racheal. They ate at a
When President Obama and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani ended their historic phone call today -- the first direct contact between U.S. and Iranian presidents since 1979 -- Rouhani signed off with, "Have a nice day." But Obama responded, according to Rouhani´s later recounting of the conversation via Twitter, with the word "khodahafez."Khodahafez is a Persian-language expression that´s used to say goodbye. It´s sometimes written as two words: "khoda hafez" and literally translates as "God be with you."You can practically hear cable news talking heads trying to decide whether they should be outraged by this choice of words, but it´s really
NBC News announced Friday that it will present a special series of programs and reports next week intended to “help Americans get the most out of the Affordable Care Act,” according to a press release. Timed to coincide with the rollout of new insurance exchanges, “Ready or Not, the New Healthcare Law” begins airing Monday, Sept. 30. The series will appear on such network mainstays as “NBC Nightly News” and “Today,” as well as on social media and other digital outlets.
Another issue in the Los Angeles Unified School District´s $1-billion effort to equip every student with an iPad surfaced Wednesday: Are parents liable if their child breaks or loses the tablet? The question emerged after revelations that 300 or so students at Roosevelt High School skirted security measures on the device and visited unauthorized websites. In response, the district suspended all home use of the Apple tablets, which have gone out to about two dozen schools so far. Ultimately, officials want the iPads used at home — that´s considered a key element of their educational value. But their dollar value Headline corrected by Staff. Please proofread.
Sen. Ted Cruz has been speaking on the Senate floor for almost 19 hours, as of this post. The talk is not technically a filibuster -- he can´t actually block the Senate from going about its business -- but symbolically, it´s more or less the same thing. The point is to show one´s opposition to something through a demonstration of physical will. Which is why you can forgive conservatives for being upset with the mainstream media´s coverage of the Cruz affair. When a Democrat like Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis filibusters against abortion restrictions, she is elevated to hero status,
Over the weekend, the New York Times published the worst “Vows” column ever written in the history of the Times or the history of history. “Found, a Soul Mate” is a marriage story about two insufferable yuppie-hippies who fell in love over yoga. It was actually published in the one-time paper of record. These two are your average, yoga-loving Brooklynites, except for that the woman accidentally killed a little girl this one time, a plot point that is explained in just two throwaway sentences that serve to explain her calm presence: “On Aug. 17, 2008, Ms. Halweil was driving on
BERLIN—The elections set to take place here in Germany Sunday are expected to turn largely on the country´s solid economy, Chancellor Angela Merkel´s handling of the European debt crisis and social issues like women´s role in the work force. But add to that plate one more thing: Germans don´t want the government telling them what to eat. In what could be a cautionary tale for First Lady Michelle Obama´s efforts to tweak Americans´ diets, Germans look set to punish the Green Party for urging that public cafeterias go meat-free on a designated "Veggie Day" each week in order to help the
Gov. Jan Brewer ordered her agencies to stop using the term “Common Core’’ when referring to new education standards, in response to hostility from critics over what they see as a federal intrusion. In an executive order, the governor said she was “reaffirming Arizona’s right to set education policy.” Her order spells out “no standards or curriculum shall be imposed on Arizona by the federal government.” But it concedes the standards adopted by the state Board of Education in 2010 already are being implemented. And Brewer herself referred to them as Common Core in her State of the
Barack Obama has still never really sold the American people on anything but himself. For Obama supporters, the question has become frustrating and frequent: how can the man and the team who made a freshman senator the country’s first black president, and kept people with him despite Great Depression-level unemployment, have failed to truly turn public opinion around on a single
Striking a tone of disgust, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi ridicules the GOP as obsessed with its loathing of President Obama and hell-bent on hurting him politically, regardless the cost. She assigns little to no blame to the president (even though Democrats privately say that’s laughable) and instead portrays him as saintly, above reproach and the victim of jealousy or something worse. After 26 years in the House, she says, “I haven’t seen anything like it. I haven’t seen anything like it.”Throughout a 50-minute interview on Thursday in her second-floor Capitol office, where the late Speaker Tip O’Neill used to receive
MSNBC´s Richard Wolffe raised two important points about media bias during a debate with conservative radio host Steve Malzberg on Wednesday: One, Fox News is the number-one cable news channel in the country; two, The Wall Street Journal, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch, is the number-one-selling newspaper in the country. To this, I would add the Rush Limbaugh is the number-one most listened to talk radio host in the country and Drudge Report, the conservative online news aggregator, is the number-one traffic driver for political news sites. So, let´s cycle back through that: The dominant players across all news
In April 2012, the Obama re-election campaign posted a photo of a staff meeting on its Tumblr account. The aides in the picture were young, casually dressed, and enthusiastic — and nearly all white. The campaign took heat on the Internet for a remarkable lack of diversity, particularly since the staff was working to re-elect the first black president in U.S. history. Now, a new book filled with inside information from the campaign reports that top Obama aides were also taking heat from key donors and supporters. In The Message: The Reselling of President Obama, author Richard Wolffe writes that
The federal government lost its checkbook at midnight, and it may not find it for days or weeks. As the zero-hour drew closer on Monday, with other avenues exhausted, the White House´s Office of Management and Budget told federal agencies that they ´should now execute plans for an orderly shutdown due to the absence of appropriations.´ House Republican leaders on the Rules Committee had discussed the procedures for both parties to appoint ´conferees´--negotiating representatives--for a joint House-Senate conference committee empowered to hash out a compromise of the budget battle that has consumed Washington for days. The House GOP scrambled all
Today, more than three and a half years after the Democrats passed Obamacare into law, the overhaul’s exchanges — its East German–like government marketplaces — will finally, sort of, open for business. The Democrats fully expect their fellow Americans to be so excited about buying government-approved insurance through these government-run exchanges that they’re choosing to shut down the government rather than delay the individual mandate for a year. Better to shut down the government, it would seem, than let Americans freely decide — even for a year — whether or not to buy Obamacare-based insurance. Alas, the individual mandate’s penalties
First lady Michelle Obama tweeted on Tuesday afternoon that her Twitter account will see fewer updates due to the government shutdown. Due to Congress’s failure to pass legislation to fund the government, updates to this account will be limited. #Shutdown 12:55 PM - 1 Oct 2013. In 2009, FactCheck.org found that the first lady had a staff of 24 people. It is unclear whether any of the first lady’s staff have been furloughed as a result of the government shutdown.
The White House and the Department of the Interior rejected a request from Rep. Steven Palazzo’s office to have World War II veterans visit the World War II memorial in Washington, the Mississippi Republican told The Daily Caller Tuesday. Palazzo helped the veterans commit an act of civil disobedience against the Park Service Tuesday, when the heroes stormed through barricades around the closed memorial. The veterans were visiting the memorial as part of Honor Flight, a non-profit that provides veterans free transport to the nation’s capital to visit the memorials to the wars they fought in. “We got the heads up
“We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.” — Barack Obama, October 30, 2008 “We are going to have to change our conversation; we’re going to have to change our traditions, our history; we’re going to have to move into a different place as a nation.” — Michelle Obama, May 14, 2008 There certainly is no question that Barack Obama wants to change the United States. And there clearly is no doubt that such fundamental transformation is difficult, given our tripartite system of government — even though Obama entered office with large Democratic majorities in
Ronan Farrow’s ol’ blue eyes may say it all. Farrow, long described as the only biological child of actress Mia Farrow and New York filmmaker Woody Allen, may actually be the son of Frank Sinatra, his mom acknowledged in a bombshell report Wednesday. While Hollywood has whispered about the prospect for years, it was the first time that Mia publicly admitted the possibility. Asked point-blank by Vanity Fair about Sinatra’s possible parentage of Ronan, Mia coyly replied: “Possibly.” The “Rosemary’s Baby’’ actress was married to Ol’ Blue Eyes from 1966 to 1968 but continued to be his lover on and off afterward — including
New York Magazine writer Jonathan Chait spent his government shutdown day mocking WWII veterans who were shut out by the National Park Service (NPS) when they came to visit the National WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. On Tuesday morning, Representative Michelle Bachman (R-MN) and several Republican members of Congress helped tear down the barricades shutting the elderly veterans out of the WWII memorial. After the barricades were removed, dozens of veterans flooded in to conduct their often emotional visits. But, thinking he was being funny, Chait took to Twitter to poke fun at the veterans, joking that the NPS should
If President Obama were really clever, he’d jump at the Republicans’ proposal in the continuing resolution to delay Obamacare for one year. A one-year delay is perhaps the only chance to prevent the Obamacare exchanges from becoming a disaster. Don’t take my word for it. Here’s Kevin Counihan, chief executive of Connecticut’s exchange, Access Health CT: “It is highly complex , it’s unprecedented and it’s not going to be smooth…. This is a two- to three-year implementation we’re doing in 10 months. I wish we had one more year.” The problem is that the test runs have revealed the exchange websites aren’t
On Tuesday evening, left-wing Politico ran a headline story encapsulating the theme of the day: “Government closed, Obamacare falters.” That message marked a massive loss for the Obama administration, which has claimed that Obamacare’s implementation could not be delayed, and used that rationale as an excuse to reject the House’s proposal for a one-year delay in favor of a government shutdown. The narrative began to shift early in the morning on Tuesday, when the Drudge Report ran a lead piece on the Obamacare health exchanges coming up with error messages for users across the country. “OBAMACRASH,” Drudge headlined. He followed
A group of World War II veterans in an Honor Flight group Tuesday knocked over barriers imposed during the government shutdown at the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C., to get inside. As part of the federal government shutdown, national parks are closed. But the group of veterans continued to the monument Tuesday, as reported by Stars and Stripes.
President Barack Obama has called off his trip to Malaysia to tackle the US government shutdown, the office of Malaysia´s PM Najib Razak has said. Secretary of State John Kerry will represent him next week instead, the office said. The US government has partially shut down after the two houses of Congress failed to agree a new budget. More than 700,000 federal employees face unpaid leave, and national parks, museums and many buildings are closed. Mr Obama earlier vowed not to allow Republicans to undermine his signature healthcare legislation as a condition to restart the US government. "They demanded ransom," Mr Obama said.
Twenty years after Vanity Fair special correspondent Maureen Orth reported on the sexual-abuse case involving Woody Allen and Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter Dylan, Orth reconnects with Farrow to discuss her human-rights work, her relationship with Frank Sinatra, the home she created for her 14 adopted and biological children, and the scandal that nearly destroyed it, 20 years ago. For her piece in the November issue, Orth talks to eight of Farrow’s children, including the long-silent Dylan, who speaks on the record for the first time about the alleged incident. Farrow discusses her relationship with Frank Sinatra, telling Orth that Sinatra was
