Ron Johnson’s JCPenney:
Anatomy of a Retail Failure

Yahoo! Finance, by Jeff Macke

Original Article

Posted By:athina, 4/9/2013 9:45:34 AM

In a stunning end to one of the most aggressively unsuccessful tenures in retail history, JCPenney (JCP) last night announced that CEO Ron Johnson would be leaving effective immediately. Myron Ullman, Johnson´s predecessor at JCPenney, takes office as CEO. When Johnson was initially wooed by JCPenney, it was to serve as CEO with Ullman as Chairman. In January 2012, Ullman was unceremoniously removed from the board. Gone with Ullman was any control the Board of Directors had over Ron Johnson and his control of JCPenney resources.

No core customer base? This core customer base left and will not return. Mr. Johnson´s JCP mocked Mother´s Day with an in-your-face, aggressive promotion of lesbianism and hasn´t let up on the theme ever since. Good luck with that, Mr. Ullman.

Thank heavens, at last! he destroyed my favorite store when I had to go for clothes.

In his defense, he did rid the crowded aisles of customers and clerks waiting to help you and check you out tho! s/o

Then I will gladly go back!

Ron Johnson ruined JCPenney; I used to shop there at least once a week; loved their stores; loved their clothes; loved their big sales. I used to get nice flyers in the mail, and then the mailings became this slick all picture arty piece that had no prices, and I just threw it in the trash. I have not been in a Penney´s store for over a year. I hope Ron just leaves and does not get a big severance package, as the man killed JCPenney.

FTA: "Johnson planned to make J. C. Penney a cool place to hang out."

Abandoning Founder James Cash Penney´s "Golden Rule" management philosophy and hiring Ellen DeGeneres as corporate spokesperson were two of the biggest "uncoolest" mistakes ever made in the history of commerce.

Another zombie company, stumbling along, refusing to fall over, completely unaware that it is already dead. Probably dead even before Johnson got there. He just tried to put some alive-looking makeup on it.

And, #5, not only did the "arty" flyers not have prices listed, I couldn´t figure out what item they were trying to sell.

I work for JCP. A lot of good talent was terminated in the past 15 months.
The Martha stuff? The window stuff is nice if you want unlined curtains. The MarthaCelebration stuff is over-priced party decorations. (ie $4 for 8 paper plates)
The half the cash registers are gone. They have been replaced with a mobile check-out for credit/debit purchases. It´s the size of an Iphone(?) but the associate has to go to a register to get the receipt. There are problems with them. It´s easy to make mistakes. They can´t be used for returns, .com/catalog pick-ups, cash purchases or credit card payments. The batteries don´t stay charged for a whole shift.
The time clock conveniently placed in the locker room is not to be used anymore. After we put stuff in our locker, we have to go to another part of the store to clock in and then return to the room next to the locker room to get the stuff we need to start the day.
JCP logic is straight out of ´Alice in Wonderland.´

I think a bulk of the Board should quit their posts too. These idiots let this ´smarty pants´ Apple guy screw up their 100 year store history of what works. Like Obama and idiot democrats destroying healthcare - that worked for the most part. Of course JCP fired or cut back hours on the folks that are JCP - the little indians that knew the customers and made the store the store. Reminds me of the companies that hired ´Chainsaw Al´ and other crooks. Similar to Macy´s trashing all the stores that brought them there - like Foley Brothers.

#11, I enjoy watching the associates use those silly little scanners. Mall prices cannot compete with Kohl´s marketing or target prices.

Really, it has nothing to do with Ellen DeGeneres. I really doubt many people care about them hiring her as a spokesperson. I care about prices, quality and service as I beleive most others do.

#15, don´t be so sure. JCP´s Mad Men´s choice of flamboyantly "gay" spokespersons --a move that was supposed to endear them to "hip" young shoppers-- almost certainly backfired.

Even the more conservative media aren´t reporting this angle of JCP´s failure.

Well, they do report that the "new" strategy (without mentioning the homosexual angle) not only failed to bring in those hip new customers, but it drove away JCP´s older, loyal customers.

I think the read-between-the-lines correlation is clear.

Include me in the group that found the use of homosexual couples in the Mother´s Day and Father´s Day ads to be the last straw.

They used to be a really comfortable, family-oriented store to shop in. I really used to like their men´s clothes, and bought a lot of my clothes there.

But I can´t remember the last time I was actually in a Penneys. It has to be at least 2 or 3 years ago now. I haven´t missed it in the least.

While the whole gay-Father´s Day stuff put off plenty of people, it doesn´t account for this fiasco. If you´ve been in one of the new re-designed stores, you´ll see that the quality and style of clothes for YOUNG PEOPLE is vastly improved. In fact, I bought almost all of the clothing Christmas gifts for young folks at the store. He did good on that part of it, but if you´re over 30,JCPenney evidently no longer wants your business, as there´s almost nothing in the store now that you could or would want to wear. Nothing. As most JCPenneys are in small-town and rural America where there´s few choices, period, they forgot who their shoppers were. Really, really dumb.

After 2-3 minutes of the clerk trying to get the iphone thing to do the checkout, standing next to the register, I suggested he go back to the caveman way of taking my money. He checked me out with the ´ole fashioned cash register in 20 seconds. Luckily it was an even $80.00 so I didn´t have to worry about him making change.

The vote, coming barely a month after the tax went into effect, was spurred by strong condemnation from the public, and by $5.25 million in

There’s a pattern of falsifying statistics throughout the entire Census Bureau. And anyone who attempts to blow the whistle on the fraud is either retaliated against or ignored, according to two new sources who have experienced the process firsthand. As I’ve been writing for more than six months, the Census Bureau office in Philadelphia uncovered a case of fraud in 2010, did nothing about it and allowed the practice to continue. In that instance, a data collector named Julius Buckmon was faking reports that went into the nation’s all-important jobless tally and consumer-inflation survey. Because the Census Bureau’s surveys are scientific — meaning

It may not be tomorrow, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) says "something will happen" to force a Nevada rancher to obey a court order to stop grazing his cattle on federal land and pay his grazing fees. "It´s obvious that you can´t just walk away from this," Reid said in an April 18 interview with a Nevada´s KSNV-TV News 3 program “What’s Your Point?” "You can´t have a law that is -- we´re a nation of laws, not of men and women," he said. Joan Eisenstodt didn´t have a stopwatch when she went to see an ear, nose and throat specialist recently, but she is certain the physician was not in the exam room with her for more than three or four minutes. "He looked up my nose, said it was inflamed, told me to see the nurse for a prescription and was gone," said the 66-year-old Washington, D.C., consultant, who was suffering from an acute sinus infection. When she started protesting the doctor´s choice of medication, "He just cut me off totally," she said. "I´ve never been in and out from a visit faster." These days,

Harry Reid isn’t backing down from his claim that rancher Cliven Bundy’s supporters are “domestic terrorists.” It’s astonishing rhetoric given the White House’s characterization of the mass shooting by a genuine terrorist, Major Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 Americans at the Fort Hood Army base after yelling “Allahu Akbar!” (God is great.) Rather than labeling Hasan’s actions “domestic terrorism,” the Obama administration is prosecuting him for having committed “workplace violence.” Democratic rhetoric is become ever more desperate and overheated as we approach the November midterm elections. Last week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said that GOP positions on immigration were motivated by

Thirty-eight Republican lawmakers, including such unlikely bedfellows as John McCain of Arizona and Ted Cruz of Texas, have joined to support a lawsuit challenging the legality of the Affordable Care Act and accusing the president of repeatedly ignoring the law he signed for political reasons. The lawmakers have signed onto a legal brief in support of a lawsuit filed by Sen. Ron Johnson, the Wisconsin Republican who is asking a federal court to overturn Obamacare’s special treatment for members of Congress and their staffs. “The unlawful executive action at issue in this case is not an isolated incident,” the brief
