President Barack Obama is bringing 11 relatives of those killed in the shooting at Connecticut´s Sandy Hook Elementary School to Washington on Air Force One on Monday so they can personally encourage senators to back gun legislation that faces tough opposition. A nonprofit organization that works with the families, Sandy Hook Promise, said that after Obama´s speech on gun control in Hartford, he is flying with relatives of seven children and one staffer killed during December´s massacre at the school. The White House says Obama is going to argue that lawmakers have an
Comments: Won´t okay White House tours but can pull this stunt...
These families are reminding me of Kristen Breitweiser and the Jersey Girls. Saw them in People Magazine this weekend at the checkout line. I feel sorry for them, but they are letting Obama use their dead children for political gain.
Unfortunately, they don´t see themselves as pawns. In fairness to them, they are trying to make sense of their child´s/relatives death. They can´t see beyond their grief right now. Looking back, they will resent being used.
Ditto #5. But they´re just poor black kids. Obama doesn´t care about them because their deaths don´t make national news. Nothing to exploit there. Besides, their parents will vote for him anyway.
This is truly shameless - but it is typical of the Left, which prefers to appeal to emotion rather than reason. Fear, guilt, shame, anxiety, hatred and suspicion: these are the true wellsprings of Leftism and its fellow-travelers. Legislation should never be rushed or passed in an atmosphere of such negative emotions. There is no school shooting emergency. There is no "gun violence" emergency. There is no need to stampede and do something, anything, before proposals have a thorough public hearing. Leftists always seek to spook the herd and cause panic so they can ram their programs through before Americans have a chance to think about them.
Like #12, I empathized with them on 60 Minutes last night, but they also said that they aren´t going away. So does that mean that they won´t be satisfied if they get the magazine restrictions and manadatory background checks that they´re currently demanding?
I watched 60 minutes last night and it was obscene. How do you communicate/grieve for your children? Those poor people will never be right in their heads or hearts and there is that monster, pelley?, exploiting and using them for his own needs/ends. It was obscene in the truest meaning of that word.
As a taxpayer I strongly resent the Obama using our airplane as a taxi. The people who are allowing themselves to be manipulated are pitiful. They are erasing any sympathy for their loss by politicizing the deaths of their children.
to bad a few people who were saved by concealed carry or just protecting themselves are not in Washington at the same time... We also should have a few drs who work with the Mentally disabled to say a few words on how the correct treatments nd sometimes being in a hospital would save a few lives..
This is Obama´s version of the Bush era Jersey Girls. Exploitation is never pretty, no matter who is doing it. I don´t appreciate them making more target rich environments for terrorists masking as ´gun free zones´.
#23, I saw the 60 Minutes segment too. The threat that "they aren´t going away" was so typical of DEMOCRATS. They don´t care what the rest of the country wants, THEIR wishes will be made law. It´s very creepy the way these horrible personal tragedies become political and that is what I saw last night. Politics. I am sure Obama was smiling.
Why doesn´t he bring his proposed law? I can´t believe he has published a brochure for his attack on the 2nd amendment, but has no one has bothered to write a law. Maybe this like Obamacare will be written by a felon in prison and not read by those who vote for it.
Why aren´t they upset with the person who installed the door buzzer? Wouldn´t a competent contractor insist on replacing the window next to the door with polycarbonate, bullet proof plastic? Why aren´t they upset with the school board who required the ´gun free´ zone sign, but NO means of enforcing the statement? No, instead they are going to contribute to more death, pain and suffering by enabling monsters to disarm innocent civilians and thus making our streets safer for criminals. It takes a simpleton to imagine that outlawing guns will strip criminals of weapons.
The article refers to the eleven as relatives of the children, not family members. They could just be political opportunists hoping for gain like the Jersey wifes after 911. Let´s face it, this is Connecticut, Liberals are quite abundant there.
The victim in an early morning shooting in Walker County has been identified as Ronald Westbrook, a 72-year-old Alzheimer´s patient. Westbrook was shot outside the home of Joe Hendricks on Cottage Crest Court about 4 am. Westbrook lived about two-and-a-half miles from where he was shot and had apparently wandered away from home. Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson said Hendricks has not been charged. However he said the investigation continues and did not rule out the possibility of charges in the future. The sheriff said Hendricks heard a suspicious sound outside the house and called 911.
The sister of a U.S. marine stabbed to death by a British man in Thailand said she hopes ´someone kills him slowly and painfully in prison´ as the killer was today jailed for 25 years. Lee Aldhouse, 30, from Birmingham, known as ´Pitbull´ in Muay Thai kickboxing circles, pleaded guilty to the murder of 23-year-old Dashawn Longfellow in an attempt to avoid execution or life in jail. (Snip) Aldhouse admitted murdering Mr Longfellow, a decorated veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, after a fight in a bar in the seaside resort of Rawai, on southern tip of the island
George Zimmerman was arrested Monday after he cocked and pointed a shotgun at his girlfriend, shattered a glass-top table then pushed her out of the house and barricaded himself inside after she ordered him to move out, according to the Seminole County Sheriff´s Office. He surrendered peacefully a few minutes later and was hauled off to jail, where he was being held without bail on domestic violence and aggravated assault charges. It was the second time in three months that the former Neighborhood Watch volunteer, who was acquitted of murdering 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, was handcuffed after being accused of domestic
A Georgia restaurant owner has been ordered to remove the patriotic flags flying above his eatery, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. Darren Miller, owner of CJ’s Hot Dogs in McDonough, was cited on Friday by a code enforcement officer for flying flags above his restaurant that honor the military. The restaurant, Fox 5 reports, is dedicated to police officers, firefighters and those serving in the military and Miller says it’s his right to pay tribute to each group -- both inside and outside his restaurant. Three months ago, Miller put up the American flag, the Georgia state flag and banners for every
During an interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl for “This Week,” Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker — while offering praise for his GOP colleagues — dismissed Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Rand Paul, Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Paul Ryan as the ideal 2016 Republican presidential nominee. “I think it’s got to be an outsider. I think both the presidential and the vice presidential nominee should either be a former or current governor, people who have done successful things in their states, who have taken on big reforms, who are ready to move America forward,” Walker responded when asked by Karl to
Moscow - A Boeing 737 airliner crashed on landing in the Russian city of Kazan on Sunday, killing all 50 people on board, the Emergencies Ministry said. The flight from Moscow´s Domodedovo airport was making a second attempt to land and exploded when it hit the runway, killing all 44 passengers and six crew on board. The flight was operated by the regional Tatarstan airline, a ministry spokeswoman said. Firefighters extinguished a fire at the scene. The airport in Kazan, the capital of the largely-Muslim region of Tatarstan, was closed, according to reports.
US Secretary of State John Kerry is to visit Israel on Friday to discuss the Iranian nuclear talks and peace with the Palestinians, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. Speaking to his ministers, Netanyahu said he would also discuss the Iran talks with French President Francois Hollande, who arrives in Israel later on Sunday, as well as with Russian President Vladimir Putin when he travels to meet him in Moscow on Wednesday. "We will also do that with the American Secretary of State of State John Kerry, who arrives here on Friday," the Israeli premier said, quoted by his office after
Arab and African foreign ministers met in Kuwait on Sunday hoping to accelerate a strategy to bolster economic cooperation, investment and trade ahead of a summit this week. The Third Africa Arab Summit on Tuesday and Wednesday will be the first meeting of its kind since 2010, when leaders met in Libya prior to the Arab Spring uprisings that toppled longstanding dictatorships there and elsewhere in North Africa and the Middle East. The one-day meeting will adopt the agenda for the summit, where leaders are expected to approve a raft of new measures to upgrade economic ties between the two
French President Francois Hollande swore that his country would stand firm in opposing a deal on Iran´s nuclear program that left the Islamic Republic with the option of producing atomic weapons. Hollande, welcomed at Ben-Gurion Airport on Sunday afternoon with full pomp and ceremony and a great deal of warmth by President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, said France will not surrender to nuclear proliferation and that Paris will stand by its demands – and continue with sanctions – until Iran gives up on a nuclear weapons. Iran, he said, "is a threat to Israel, to the region,
The Mossad is working with Saudi officials on contingency plans for a potential attack on Iran in the event that Tehran´s nuclear program is not sufficiently curbed in the deal that may be concluded between Iran and world powers in Geneva this week, The Sunday Times reported. Both Jerusalem and Riyadh have expressed displeasure at the deal being formulated between Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers that they see as doing little to stop Tehran´s progress toward a nuclear weapon. According to the Times, Riyadh has already given its consent for Israel to use Saudi airspace for a
Israel is working on coordinating plans for a possible military strike with Saudi Arabia, with Riyadh prepared to provide tactical support to Jerusalem, a British newspaper reported early Sunday. The two countries have both united in worry that the West may come to terms with Iran, easing sanctions and allowing the Islamic Republic to continue its nuclear program. According to the Sunday Times, Riyadh has agreed to let Israel use its airspace in a military strike on Iran and cooperate over the use of rescue helicopters, tanker planes and drones. “The Saudis are furious and are willing to give Israel
Business and labor are uniting behind legislation that will repeal one of ObamaCare´s much-maligned taxes. A bill introduced by Reps. Pat Tiberi (R-Ohio) and Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) would end the Affordable Care Act´s (ACA) reinsurance fee. The reinsurance program will tax health plans from 2014 to 2016 and use the funds to help stabilize the individual market as sick patients come on board. (Snip) The reinsurance fee will generate about $25 billion in revenue over three years. In 2014, the program will charge health plans $63 per person on each plan — the plan’s holder along with his or her
Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) said on MSNBC’s “PoliticsNation” Wednesday that when Jesus fed five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish, “he didn’t charge food stamps.” “When Jesus had those five loaves and two fishes, he didn´t charge food stamps. He didn´t ask anybody how much money they had. He fed them because they were hungry, and that´s really where we ought to be,” McDermott said in response to Republican critics of the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). In September, the House approved a plan by Republicans to cut $39 billion in food stamps over the next
The nation’s view of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, colored by the horrific Benghazi assassination of the U.S. ambassador to Libya on her watch, has suddenly turned upside down, with more now holding an unfavorable opinion of the likely 2016 presidential candidate. A new YouGov/Economist poll found Clinton, whose approval ratings have typically been sky high, with an unfavorable rating of 48 percent, more than the 46 percent who have a favorable opinion of her. The YouGov pollsters said that the change in American attitudes toward Clinton "suggests that negative press surrounding the tragic
President Obama will cast growing income inequality and a decline in economic mobility as a “fundamental threat to the American dream” during a speech Wednesday in Washington. The speech will serve as an early preview for next year’s State of the Union address, according to a White House official, who said Obama would focus much of his energy over the next three years on the issue. “The decisions we make over the next few years will determine whether or not our children will grow up in an America where, if you work hard, you can get ahead,” the official said.
Bill Clinton, the cliché goes, was the first black president, no matter his skin color. That being the case, Barack Obama is not the first black president, or the first African-American president, if you prefer, but the first hippie president. Clinton’s southern background and lifestyle were indeed more typically black, just as Obama’s was more typically hippie. And we’re not just talking about the “Choom gang” here, scarfing “Maui Wowie” on the sands of Oahu. We’re talking about all of it, the whole multi-culti-missing-white-mother-vanished-Kenyan-father-anti-imperialist-America-is-always-the-enemy-and-don’t-you-forget-it-nine-yards. And like most hippie culture as I knew and experienced it, it wasn’t about “peace and love.” Not
During a presentation at the White House in which President Barack Obama touted the benefits of the Affordable Care Act, the president declared that his signature health care reform law was not going to be repealed. This assertion led his administration members, his staff, and audience members to rise from their seats and give the president a standing ovation. Obama said that ACA opponents’ alternative to the health care reform law is to champion repeal and going back to the health care delivery system status quo ante. He specifically cited Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who he said was asked directly for
A woman has revealed how difficult it is to eat healthily and stay full when living off an average food stamp budget. Melinda Moulton, from Huntington, Vermont, was one of 200 people to take part in the 3Squares Challenge, which saw her living for a week on just $36 worth of food, or around $1.71 a meal. Opting to try and eat as healthily as possible, Ms Moulton resorted to cheap foods like yogurt for breakfast, two handfuls of peanuts for lunch and lentil stew for dinner, all of which left her unsatisfied.´I don´t know how people do it,´ said
Good stuff from Jonathan Turley at today’s House hearing on executive power, although I regret that I couldn’t find a more user-friendly format for you to watch. There’s no compilation clip; you’ll have to make do with the C-SPAN embed by fast-forwarding to the time cues I give you and being patient while the vid buffers (and buffers, and buffers).(Snip)That brings us to point two: Even if Congress can’t stop Obama, the courts can. The problem there, though, says Turley, is that O and the DOJ have argued successfully in many cases that no one has standing to sue him
Nineteen people stood behind President Obama on stage in the Executive Office Building Tuesday as the president kicked off a new campaign to promote Obamacare. One of those people, a young Florida woman named Monica Weeks, introduced Obama after telling the story of being struck with Crohn´s Disease at age 19 and receiving expensive treatments for several years that were covered by her parents´ health care plan — because Obamacare allowed her to remain on that plan until age 26. Now, Weeks said, she has coverage through a job. "The Affordable Care Act gives young adults who are just starting
CNN host wondered out loud on his show this evening whether the physically unfit Chris Christie could follow the "perfect physical specimen" Barack Obama into the White House: "After the perfect Barack Obama, who´s a perfect physical specimen to many people´s eyes, does it matter?" Morgan asked his guest. "Or is actually somebody very different, someone who´s much more of a regular kind of guy who likes cheeseburgers and beer, but appears to be a straight talker, somebody perhaps more of a straight talker than it appears Barack Obama turned out to be?"
Nobody could accuse the press of ignoring the fiasco-on-a-server that is HealthCare.gov. The Obamacare website’s woes are dominating coverage on the network news, the cable talk shows, the blogs and, of course, high-octane websites like POLITICO. But did the press do a good job of covering the Affordable Care Act before the health care exchanges went online—sort of—on Oct. 1? Were we adequately warned of the troubles that were to come? And now that HealthCare.gov’s problems are headline news, is the coverage of it any better? Sure, one can find a few examples of one news outlet or another warning of impending
MSNBC´s Chris Matthews will interview President Barack Obama this Thursday, the network announced Tuesday. The interview is part of Matthews´ "Hardball College Tour," and will take place at American University in Washington, D.C. According to a news release from MSNBC, Matthews, along with university students, will "discuss a variety of topics with the president including voter suppression, healthcare, the decline of confidence in the government and the overall political dysfunction in Washington." On Monday our colleagues Carrie Budoff Brown and Jonathan Allen reported that the White House is launching a coordinated campaign to return attention to why the Affordable Care Act
MSNBC has announced that Chris Matthews, Barack Obama´s most excitable fan, will be interviewing the President on Thursday´s Hardball. Fawning over the liberal politician is incredibly common among journalists, but Matthews has taken it to a whole new level. According to the network host, Obama is a "perfect," "cool," brilliant figure who is comparable to Jesus, Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. The verbose Matthews has no filter when it comes to the Democrat, even once bizarrely blurting out that an Obama speech made him "forget" that the commander in chief "was black." To prepare you for the likely love-fest
